Is the onboard audio of the "MSI Z170A KRAIT GAMING "good or should i get a soundcard?
>>
>>52109596
I have the older Z97 version and I can say that the sound quality is something that only an audiophile could find a problem with.
>>
>>52109630
Okay thanks bro
>>
>>52109641
No problem.
>>
>>52109596
Only reason to buy a sound card is for specialty purposes like " I want a headphone amp for specific sound quality in production" or "I need 2 independent cards for media output to different systems" (only two people I installed cards in). Onboard audio is fantastic on this generations boards, but they will have some noise that only higher end systems and people with tunes ears will hear. Don't buy a soundblaster when you could put your money into better components.

Whenever I close a resource heavy program(like a game or something). My computer pretty much locks up for a while.

What would be the main case for this?
I assume it's either the RAM or the HDD freaking out.

Would more RAM(I only have 4gb's) help alleviate the issue?

I mean. It's not a major pain since I don't use that many resource heavy things. But it's fairly annoying being unable to use my computer for a minute or two after closing an application.
>>
>>52109674
Okay, thank you.
If it has good bass / clear sound, im happy so yeah
>>
>>52109715
For sure! In computers, bass is entirely on the speaker/headphones since they do the amplifying. Clarity will be solid though!
>>
>>52109712
RAM may help but I bet you CPU is the bottleneck. Think of RAM more as the table to a worker (CPU). A huge table with all your work on it doesn't help a slow person work faster. Check you CPU usage when you close those programs. You can find it in task manager in the performance section.
>>
>>52109823
I will. Thanks.

Granted my HDD is usually working overtime listening from the sound of it. Is that a factor?
>>
Is there a way to set a default view across all directories in the Windows file browser?

A lot of my directories default to "Large Icons" and I'd prefer everything be "Details".
>>
Hey guys I have an old computer and I need it just for some office programs, browsing and playing an old game.
I have a broken GeForce 7600 GT 256mb and I would like to know if this number (256mb) uses my ram or if this is it's own ram. So would it be better to buy a card with 512mb? I have only 1,5gb ram
>>
>>52109892
Try holding the control key and using the scroll wheel on you mouse (two finder on a laptop) till you find what you like. I've found it usually applies to all folders afterwards. The only ones that will be different are the 4 folders Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music as they are user specified.
>>
I've got about 390$ saved in my "blow on unneeded things" fund. Should I wait until nvidia announces their new cards? I was thinking about jumping for a 980ti but then I'd also need a new monitor. Using a shit zalman monitor now, 60hz 5ms, graphics card radeon 7870 oc edition.
>>
>>52109853
You can check that in task manager too, if disk usage if above 50℅, the computer may be having indexing issues which is Windows related, or may be failing SMART, a hardware check. See if your computer or hard drive manufactur has diagnostic utilities for that. Dells and HP's have it built in.
>>
When I start my computer, my audio is really fucking distorted. If I unplug my audio interface and immediately plug it back in (usb by the way), it works fine until I reboot. What the fuck? I have the latest drivers for the audio interface, I also didn't have this problem before I upgraded to windows 10.
>>
>>52109957
That is the onboard RAM listed alongside the card. Usually, you can't find a card these days with less than 512mb, which is OK! I would suggest buying a Geforce 210 as a cheap replacement! It's most likely to be compatible.

Is this monitor good enough for gaming?
>>
>>52109520
What's the cheapest monitor I can find with HDMI input and that's larger than 10"?
>>
>>52110040
Sorry, by onboard, I mean on the graphics card if that wasn't clear.
>>
>>52110049
Yeah, just be sure your graphics card can handle the resolution for the games you wanna play.
>>
>>52110054
Your better off checking with retailer websites. Just use a filter to check for HDMI input on BBY.com, newegg, amazon, and the like.
>>
>>52110000
How is it being distorted?
Check to see if there's any audio software that starts on startup and disable it. You could also try re-installing the audio drivers in compatibility mode.
>>
>>52109712
Probably RAM is the issue. Chances are because you have so little RAM, when you're playing the game stuff is being stored on the swap space in your hard drive, then when you shut it down it's freeing the swap memory
>>

>>
>>52109999
I'll look into it then. Thanks.

>>52110136
That's what I was thinking as well. Is there anything you can do to "optimize" the swap? Right now it's around 4gb's I think. Isn't 2 usually the recommended one for 4gb?

>>
>>52110155
My opinion on this is pretty bias as I work primarily outside of linux, but I'll try to break it down Barney style. Linux has very little overhead so computers tend to run faster on it. It also doesn't suffer from nearly as many update hiccups or viruses because its not a big market share BUT their viruses tend to be much more aggressive.

>he doesn't know about the fundamental freedoms as spoken by our lord and savor Stallman

The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).
The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

Is it possible to use my phone as a screen through the USB port?

I have a raspberry pi 0 and I don't want to spend more on a screen than I spent on the computer.
>>
>>52110408
I mean yes, I just don't recommend RAID ever as it sucks to recover if it goes bad (its hella expensive). Plus three drives in RAID 1? Your mirroring all 3 for 6 toral or just 1 drive twice? RAID 1 should only be used in divisions of 2, RAID 5 can utilize 3 drives.
>>
>>52110570
All right, linux is typically lighter than windows and very easy to rice. Vidya support is getting better.
Also, no botnet
>>
>>52110589
You could set your phone and pi up on team viewer. It's a remote connection software. Otherwise no, not unless your phone somehow supports MHL input which I don't think any do.

620w psu enough for 6600k and r9 390?
>>
>>52110364
it'll likely be slower than the samsung one, but otherwise it should be safe

you should research how batteries/chargers work. the phone tells the charger how much power to give it, so as long as its capable of delivering that power it wont ever "overcharge"

>>
>>52110629
I would say no. Technically on paper it could but all things get more inefficient over time and your other peripherals may take more wattage. Just get setup on a 750w. Don't be cheap on your PSU, as it both gives power to your components and could kill them all if if fails.

zfs man
seems like I know more about this than you
well this is flt, so
Raidz1 = Zfs equivalent of raid 5
(but without the write hole problem)
Zfs is a copy on write filesystem

>>

>>
>>52110742
RAID is hardware level based on a comtroller. If your using software to emulate it (ei your file system or os),the performance gain is taken away. Obviously you don't understand RAID.

talk me out of buying this, /g/
>>
>>52110946
what do you plan on using it for?
>>
>>52110880
Because you asked and I'm trying to make you understand why software RAID is pointless. If you really desire mirrored drives for failure purposes (AKA raid 1) and really want to use zfs, you need a parity drive for each physical drive. That's why 3 drives doesn't make sense. How much space do you want to be able to access? All 6tb?
>>
>>52110976
Raspi0. See >>52110054.
>>
>>52110880
And, by hardware/software RAID, if you want a RAID, its one or the other. ZFS as a file system will emulate raid, therefore making it software based. There are controllers you can get for a NAS that will allow hardware RAID configurations too.

Ill backtrack on my own fault here. I mistook you I initial question as a typo desiring actual RAID 1 not RAIDz1. Yes you should be fine with that as a setup. However, a hardware based RAID 5 will have better performance over RAIDz1 even with the advances. It will deal with SATA on an IO level instead of through a CPU making the writing and routing faster.

-Will it work with any amd processor? I'm still not sure what kind will work and what won't.
-Can I triple boot with no errors? Will OSX work with grub well?

>>
>>52113052
>why is C called C and not A, B, D... Y or Z?
A and B already existed, so they named it C.
D is also a real thing, as is E I believe. There's also R but who knows why it's called that.

>Why is the OS installed on the C: drive?
A very long time ago, the only method of permanent storage that computers had was floppy disks. Because of this, the floppy disk drive was assigned A: by DOS. Eventually most computers started to have more than one floppy drive, so the system reserved A: for floppy drive 1 (usually the OS) and B: for floppy drive 2 (usually a program you wanted to run). When hard disks came around, they were thus the third type of disk installed, so they received the drive letter C:. It was only much, MUCH later that operating systems started to get installed onto hard disks. The precedent stuck.

Komodo seems very interesting since I hope to expand from HTML once I understand the gist of it, will I be fine with the free version? I suppose I could buy the 99 dollar version... eventually.
>>
>>52113195
Nah the paid version isn't really worth it. You can pirate it if you want to, but you'll quickly realize that the extra features just aren't as useful as you'd think.

I mean really, why do you want an editor in the first place? There's two big reasons I can think of:
1: Syntax highlighting
2: Built in launch support

If you're going to pay for an HTML IDE, there's only one worthwhile product: Adobe Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is a WYSIWYG ide with some gnarly features (such as automatic uploading of code to your web server). It's expensive though. If you want a fancy text editor, Komodo is your best bet.

It's basically just some extra ventilation and potentially more dust. The only issue could be if there isn't a fan at the front of the case. If you open the top without a fan in front there might not be a lot of air passing over the drives.

Received a PSLX300 Turntable for Xmas, not anything great but thought I'd try it out. Bought a couple records and all the newest pressings (Baroness - Purple, American Football - self titled) work fine and play correctly, but my Remaster of Can - Ege Bamyasi and Ellitott Smith - Either/Or both sound slightly sped up and higher pitched. What gives?

My phone is a Note3 that has a bad micro usb socket that needs resoldering on the micro usb port and it's glitchy.

If I can't get another phone why can't I just fix my own phone? It literally cost her nothing since I was going to sent the phone in with my Samsung tablet. Both are experiencing the same glitching and bad soldering on the micro usb ports.

The best Linux drivers are for firepro or quadro GPUs and that's because a premium is charged for thosr specific cards.

Yep. PS4 can display at a max resolution of 1080p. Trying to play it on a 1440p monitor means you're going to basically see a 1080p display area with a large black border around it. If you try to stretch out the image (assuming your monitor supports that) it's gonna be blurry and shitty looking. Just play it on your 1080p TV.

Managed to smash my phone screen over Christmas, 6 months left on my 24 month contract.

Figured I might as well get it repaired (couple of reasons; would cost me 140 quid to buy out my of my current contract, and the LG G5 isn't out until March so the G4 is still quite expensive. Plus, repairing this will give me a back up in the future)

Screen is cracked and I can't do any touch input, so it's pretty much fucked until I get it repaired. I'd ask the price, but it's subjective depending on how much the indian in the repair shop is going to fuck me over. I hope it's not over £80-100, though.

Anyway, should I wipe my data through the android device manager? I know I 'should', but is it mandatory? I don't have any important information, I delete my photos and messages routinely or back them up on the cloud. I set a long password through the device manager, and it'd be a massive pain in the backside to set everything up again (as I can't back it up atm due to a broken screen).

Pic unrelated.

Question(s) about case fans with shit diagram.
Case is a Lian Li PC 9F.
There is a CM Hyper 212 EVO cooling the CPU.
Main source of heat is an AMD R9 290.

1. The two 120 mm intake fans have that front cover and individual dust filters in the way of the air intake.
If I'm getting new case fans, should I look into static pressure or air flow fans?

2. I have the optional 140 mm fan installed up top.
Is that even necessary to keep good airflow?
Does it just hamper the airflow?

3. Any highly recommended brands for fans?
I just always rock whatever the case manufacture provides.
Got some holiday money to blow.

>>52114856
Yes, it's a frame rate cap. A use for it would be playing old games/non-demanding games that would otherwise run at 100's of fps, causing unnecessary strain on the GPU (and other potential issues).

My brother is really big into vintage computers despite being born in 1997. He recently found an IBM PC 5150 on the local classifieds for $300 Canadabux ($215 freedom dollars) and negotiated the guy down to $250 CAD (or $180 USD). The system comes with a monitor, a bunch of software, dual 5.25" floppy drives and several versions of MS-DOS. It looks like it's in pretty good shape, too.

I really don't know much about these things at all. The oldest computer I own is a Macintosh Quadra 605, which despite being ancient is still a full decade newer than the IBM and infinitely more advanced. Are the PC 5150s generally regarded as reliable (or better still, near-unkillable)? Is the price decent all things considered? I've seen some ridiculous BINs on eBay but as usual I take those listings with a grain of salt.

overclocking my qnix monitor to 120 hz forces my gpu to clock up from 324 mhz / 875 mv to 692 mhz / 925 mv on regular desktop usage. is the uptick in wattage minimal, or would continual usage add up over time to not justify 120 hz? at 110 hz the gpu doesn't tick up and stays at its default setting

Unless he's very, very dedicated to starting and deeply appreciating a collection of vintage PC hardware, he shouldn't bite.
If it's software and games he wants, just tell him to emulate.
I personally don't think it's worth buying the hardware unless you already have that nostalgia attachment to it. From my personal experience, any PC he buys for that vintage craving he has now will eventually end up sitting in a closet.

Your airflow is currently -20, you want it to either be positive or neutral. Having a negative airflow means you'll get air sucked in through the cracks in the vent to make up for the difference, meaning you'll get dust build up.

Positive pressure means there'll be air being pushed out of those gaps, meaning less dust.

Would there be any noticeable benefit from installing a game like Fallout 4 on my SSD instead of my HDD? I was curious whether the speed of the storage drive is typically the bottleneck when a game moves content like textures and models from storage into memory, as opposed to the CPU/GPU.

FO4 won't really benefit. There isn't much texture streaming. Unless you're constantly going in and out of buildings and the loading times are too long for you, I wouldn't bother. My loading times seemed fine on my HDD, I very rarely install games on my SSD unless it's something I'm hyped as fuck for and I'm marathoning it (like I did with TW3, but agian, with that being an open world with very few loading times, it did'nt make a difference)
>>
>>52115071
I think he's mainly doing it for the hardware. At the moment he's got an Amiga 500, a Commodore 64 (both of which were picked up from a yard sale for $20 a piece), a Powerbook 180c ($80 off Kijiji) and one of the original Bondi Blue iMacs (a trash find). But this is by far going to be his most expensive acquisition, and I'm just wondering if it really is worth it.
>>
>>52115263

>>

They're pretty bad in 4, worse than 3 and NV from what I remember.
>>
>>52115295
It's been a while since New Vegas, but I feel like they were substantially better.

Not only that, lots of the interiors of buildings aren't instanced, which means no loading times (kind of like how TW3 had no loading times once you entered the game, ever building was accessible without a loading time). Ofcourse, some do require loading times, but the loading is significantly shorter (I feel).

So I got a good deal on a Sprint phone, I've called Sprint and verified the ESN is clean (NOT reported lost/stolen, NOT tied to any account)

Now I can't activate it with any MVNOs running on Sprint's network because of something called "Financial Eligibility Check" which is basically a lock put on phones that weren't paid in full OR weren't active on their network for 12 continuous months. I'm convinced my phone is the latter, because Sprint's system doesn't have it tied to their account.

What are my options as far as getting cheap service for this device?

I've heard some people have had success by complaining to the FCC and having Sprint remove this hold so they can use it on an MVNO. Should I try to talk to MVNOs to see if they can talk Sprint into allowing it to activate (they do this for iPhone customers) or go straight to the FCC? Cut my loses and sell the phone?

It's easier to pirate on a kobo.
With kindle you have to fuck about with the file before uploading it to the device since the device only supports .mobi.

Kobo supports almost everything natively, while kindle is like 'lol nope mobi only enjoy the botnet'

I'm interested in mount a home server from laptop parts, mostly a motherboard, but I want to use and power almost two or three large hard drives, desktop form.
Considering I can swap the PCIe wifi card an got one with two sata ports, how I can power the hard drives? Can I try to fit a desktop PSU and power the drives from there or try to power the drives with two chink PSU for hard drives?
I know that in both cases I don't have any way to use the laptop battery as a some kind of UPS.

How much room does a PCI-E network adapter take? I'm using a Netgear WNA3100 and it's the biggest piece of shit I've ever purchased. Constant disconnects, and constantly having to unplug and replug it.

From what I hear, PCI-E is a more stable connection. My problem is, what's in my case barely fits in my case as it stands. There's literally less than 1cm of room between my CPU cooler and removable panel, if that tells you anything. If PCI-E might be too big, any USB wireless adapters you'd recommend?
>>
>>52117282
laser and optical are almost the same exact thing. it really doesn't matter.

Razer makes really nice mice, but you definitely pay for the quality. Logitech is damn good too

I think your problem is that its overheating.

If a Wireless PCI-E card overheats it tends to drop the connection.

im trying to install a kernel on mint. when i got ./configure it unpacks and i run into something that says

C complier does not work

i googled and found some shit to enter into the terminal and sure enough it fucking worked and a ton of stuff unpacks essentially checking the environment then i run into these problems

configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 gudev-1.0) were not met:

No package 'glib-2.0' found
No package 'gudev-1.0' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables GLIB_CFLAGS
and GLIB_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

i have no idea what glib or gudev are but these drivers are supposed to work straight out of the extraction so my thought it to avoid those and use the set environment variables option. i just have no fucking idea where to start

                            $orderForEmbaID = 0;
if(isset($resSelOrderForEmba) && $resSelOrderForEmba <> ""){

$RowRow = mysql_fetch_array($resSelOrderForEmba);

$orderForEmbaID = $RowRow['id'];

}
$returnValue = $returnValue."<orderForEmbaID>$orderForEmbaID</orderForEmbaID>";

the $orderForEmbaID variable is always empty. Checked the query that gets read and it works. but even so I would at least expect a 0 in the return, but it always is just empty..
Anyone ever encountered something similar and can help?

I'm trying to make a build that is a bit future proof. Somewhat for gaming, but primarily for utilities and image/video editing. http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/ There was my tentative build, but I really don't know what I'm doing. The last time I built a PC was five years ago, and I've completely forgotten how to even judge hardware. What I need is some kind of primer on which specs are important, how to ensure compatibility, etc.

So the fan for my CPU cooler died and I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet.

The thing is my temps are around 35°C normally and they don't change to more then 40 - 45ish even during heavy usage like if I played a game or something.

Is it worth replacing my cooler's fan then if my temps aren't bad without them?

Highly recommended. Modern processors can get permanently damaged in less than 15 secs without a heat sink. You've still got it but no fan, and I wouldn't taje that risk when fans are $15.

H is cheaper, usually only handles one graphic card, no oc, probably a bit worse in connectors (3pin fans vs 4pin). Just compare the particular model and if it fits your needs go for it. Asrock H97 anniversary is on sale I think for $65 right now, I got it since I fried my $200 mobo.

how much would my computer be worth?

Looking to sell my computer to fund a very nice laptop to connect to my monitors and use instead of a dedicated desktop, so this is a two parter question.

The specs of my desktop at the moment is as follows:

Xeon e5-2650v3
Asus x99 e-ws
8gb samsung ecc ddr4 ram 1x8gb dimm
750w fractal design gold powersupply
fractal design define r2 xl case
240gb ocz evo100 ssd
asus strix 960 2gb gpu
be quiet dark rock pro 3 cpu cooler.

if I was to sell this rig what would I be able to get for it? would I make more if I was to sell all the parts individually or as a single set?

I also have two tn 1080p panels I would be willing to add in as a "freebie" was going to sell them seperatly but wouldnt get more than £100 for them both.

Also, would like a laptop that is able to get a large amount of batterylife, graphics power is not required as gaming isnt something I do.

just enough to power 3x 3440x1440 monitors along with the built in monitor on the laptop, while getting 10+ hours of use.

would i be best off getting a custom build laptop or a specific model?

That CPU could go for $800 easily. The mobo is worth about $100, $50 for the stick of RAM, $50 for the PSU, $80 for the SSD, and $250 for the GPU. The CPU cooler isn't really valuable, maybe $25.

Individually would make you more money but the chances of you selling everything are extremely low. Itr would be better if you packaged everything for like $1250. That's like 850 in yuropoor dollaroos

The monitors I would keep separate
