I run my website and FTP from this 12 year old entry-level SPARC server and manage it with a 15 year old subnotebook. My bedroom TV is also 58 years old, but it's got power problems at the moment.
I get my internet thru a Motorola SB5100 (2002) modem and a D-Link DI-524 router (2005). I can't even change the wireless security settings on the router cus D-Link forgot to define some JavaScript shit on the form and you cannot click "apply" to submit the form. I'm stuck with 128bit WEP at best

>>51851816
I don't know, it's just a weird dream I have that I'd like to follow through with. I have most of the stuff I'd need to make it work, just gotta get a vga to rca converter. Honestly, what better use for an old 12~14 inch TV than to play SNES games and watch 90s anime and junk?
>>51851789
I'd recommend something a little larger than mine (9"), like a 12" or 15" for close range, and 19"+ for sitting back a ways.
Also, if you're in the US, old TVs will only have an RF input which means using an RF modulator for input. You'll find composite if it's not quite *that* old, but even that's still pretty bad for video from a computer. I don't think modern computers/GPUs even support composite video output, so you may need a converter (or an old PCI GPU) just to get to that point.
An RF input or even a composite input on an old TV will not get you much in the way of resolution, but I'd say it's fine for watching old 4:3 TV shows or playing old console games.
My Trinitron also picks up a *lot* of noise when connected to a computer. Some that I tried were worse than others, but it was always there. It might just be due to the filter caps being degraded, but it doesn't really show any noise when connected to other sources. I don't know if that's typical for old TVs or what.
You can see all the noise in this picture here. The TV was connected to a ThinkPad T42, and it was actually relatively noise-free except for when playing a game. I guess the GPU or the computer in general was creating a lot more electrical noise when under heavy load versus light load. I don't know, it's not really my area of expertise.
Not Mine but same unit.
Realistic Amplifier and Tuner. (SM-1000 and TM-1000)
I have both, but only use the Amp for extra PC speakers.
Recently had to take em apart for cleaning. Pots had wear and tear, contact cleaner did the trick.
>>51851960
Yeah, I have a specific TV in mind that I already own, it's probably 12 inches, not sure if I plan to get an rf modulator, if I have an rf modulator, or if I should get a vcr with rca in and rf out. It might not turn out perfect, but at the most I'll have spent 20$, which isn't a huge loss in my book.
>>51852085
Is it a Trinitron or something else?
The RF output of a VCR is essentially an RF modulator, and if it's a decent VCR it's probably as good or better than a typical standalone unit. If it works well enough there's really no reason to buy another.
The main issue will be the output from the computer. If the VCR only accepts composite, you might need a VGA to composite converter at the least in order to connect it to a modern computer. That, unfortunately, can cause further degradation, especially if not a high quality unit.
I happened to find a pretty decent VGA to composite converter new old stock at Goodwill, and I've used it with pretty good results with my old Trinitron.
Maybe one of these days I'll try hooking it up to my MacBook Air and seeing how it works. Maybe the MBA wouldn't cause so much video noise.

>>51853874
My Fire V100 that I'm currently running eats around 60-70 W under load, the slightly beefier V120 probably around 100 W.
Not sure what a T1000 would need, they run 300 W PSUs and I'm willing to bet they probably eat half of that, especially the 4-core variants.
In other words, it's obviously not as efficient as a home server as grabbing an old laptop or a single-board computer, but if you're really interested in exploring Solaris and SPARC chips I don't think it would totally break your wallet to do so.

>where can I get one and which ones?
You can pay up the ass for a 1970's marantz/pioneer/sansui/whatever but you ought to just hunt around garage sales and thrift stores. When you find one in person, google "audiokarma [receiver name]" to find what all the old baby boomers think about it and what long term usage problems (if any) it has
>>51853549
>also would they sound as good as current receivers?
High end receivers the 1970's and 1980's sound as good as, and in many cases better than, midrange receivers from this decade. The largest issue with receivers from the late 1980's onward is that manufacturers shifted from improving audio quality to adding lots of extra features (Bluetooth, internet radio streaming, HDMI passthrough, a million useless equalizers), so even though audio technology has improved a lot, low and mid tier receivers are getting shittier
>has audio technology progressed much?
Yeah somewhat, it's gotten smaller and speakers and headphones have improved a great deal. Low and midrange receivers aren't improving as fast as you'd expect for the reasons stated above

I clean this thing every 6 months because I want it to last for the rest of my life. No ancient hairballs in this thing! I've had this forever but I see listings for them on ebay all the time. That, or stop by a Goodwill and you might be able to pick one up for 10 dollars. Make sure you don't get a terminal keyboard, though; there's no way to use them on modern computers anymore. Google the part number on the bottom before you buy it to make sure!
Repaired this Kenwood last winter and it hasn't caught on fire yet. Entire left amp was shorted and so I replaced all the burned resistors, BJT's, etc. up to the finals. Then replaced the finals on the other side to match. Sounds alright.
Still need to replace the pre-amp board, though. Probably just etch a new board to support multiple line level inputs and handle pre-amp externally.

Does it do composite? I've got a friend with a portable trinitron (huge battery pack and everything) that does colour and composite. I just want it for the teeny screen.
I use Kenwood KA-5700 - it's an ok amp, I've heard better amps from the same era, VU meters are cool but if I may say something about sound, sure vocals are warm and highs sound sweet even too sweet for me but sound is light and it took some effort to give it some weight and now it sounds ok, some bass is still at the back but well it can punch mostly in electronic music and funky music but still it is lacking something, I've heard it has passive preamp so maybe thats it.
And Yamaha A-960II- some people that Yamaha is at HI-END level can't say for sure only that it's the best amp that I heard even among new ones... Quite neutral but it has a lot of bass and dynamics and it has a lot of setting so you can achive some warmer sound and it can play ENYTHING at really good level.

Mine has RF input only. It's really only a "semi-portable" model because it's small enough to move around but only runs on AC power and has to be plugged in.
Consumer TVs really did not have composite inputs until sometime in the 1980s, but the AC/DC portable model Trinitrons had composite inputs long before the AC-only TV models, because they were often used as field monitors for broadcasters.
If you like teeny screens, Sony offered Trinitrons as small as 4".

I counted the aperture grille stripes on my KV-9200 and got ~300 (300 each of red, green, and blue), which actually seems quite good for a 9" CRT from 1974.
By my calculators that would give it a stripe pitch of ~.46mm, about twice that of a modern fine pitch Trinitron computer monitor. It's definitely course, and I can easily see the stripes up close with my naked eyes, but it doesn't seem too bad at normal viewing distance which still has to be fairly close for such a small screen.
I've always been curious as to how many aperture grille stripes the different models/sizes of Trinitron TVs had over the years, but that information is basically non-existent outside of later models and monitors.
Of course if you really want a Trinitron with a fine grille pitch, the Super Fine Pitch video monitors or computer monitors are where it's at.

Yes it's a streamlined K4. I can't recall ever seeing any antique tinplate models of the S1 or T1, unfortunately. They really are works of art.

I know, I was momentarily very impressed ;-)
I have some old Lionel tinplate stuff, but it's in bad shape. Mostly my own fault from when I was a little kid. Too bad :-(

>I have some old Lionel tinplate stuff, but it's in bad shape. Mostly my own fault from when I was a little kid. Too bad :-(
Could still be worth something, depending on models and how bad of shape. They were meant to be played with by kids, anyway, and a little wear just adds character and shows that it didn't just sit around its whole life.
Plus most of the antique stuff is relatively simple and easy to repair/restore, with a surprising amount of parts still readily available for cheap.
My set (not even really a set, the 1688 was never sold with those passenger cars, even though they match nicely in style and scale) was all repainted at some point by previous owners, and it's fairly common stuff to begin with, so it's not worth much and I can just enjoy running it without worrying.

Sansui 9090 with ML-1 speakers
I inherited them from my father before he passed on when I was in 2nd grade.
I never thought much of the receiver or speakers till I started hearing music out of them and noticed how much better it sounded compared to the same music being played out of modern "consumer" grade audio amps and speakers.
I treasure them not only because they sounds wonderful for pretty much everything(music, games, movies, radio), but because it reminds me of my father.
You can get better audio equipment these days, but its very pricey(think 1000+ for speakers and 2000+ for a receiver)

My grandfather offered to give me a pair of Marantz Hd 660 speakers, are they worth fixing up?
I believe they've just been sitting in a garage for 20 or so years.
Anything I should look out for if I do decide to fix them up?

There's a good chance the woofers had a foam surround which is probably deteriorating if not completely gone by now. They can be re-foamed or replaced.
They're a bit too "80s" for my taste but probably decent speakers, and if you have room for them and don't already have a good pair of large speakers, they're definitely worth checking out and probably even worth re-foaming or re-woofering if necessary.
>>51848766
The laptop under the table with the printer is so I can stream animus.

Oldest piece of tech? Probably this, date of production is sometime in 1964. Runs nicely and keeps good time.

Sansui 3000A made in 1968, one of their first solid state receivers
When I got it one channel was dead and the other super fuzzy but after replacing all the electrolytic caps and a couple dead diodes it sounds good as new
The power switch has since failed but I basically never turn it off so whatever

Hey guys! Can I get some help. I have pair of Pioneer CS-A700 speakers, and I really like them but the bass isn't really there. The receiver I'm using is a Sony STR-VX250. How would I go about getting the best sound out of these? Alot of people still love them so I don't want to just get rid of them and give em a fair shot.

My Zenith X940, dated around 1967.

not quite as good as your Trinitron, but it can do A/V(Mono) input, and runs off of batteries (I was running a Raspberry Pi Model B off of it, with RetroPie and OSMC, but now that it's in my kitchen, I'll probably just run OSMC off of it now with some plugins like Popcorn Time etc.

1982 Zenith Space Command. made in the US and purchased at a place called Rays ca. 1983. Used by my great grandmother until her passing in 1990. I used it to play my SNES I got when I turned 6, and the old orange Nick toons VHSs. Still works.

I've been thinking about other PDAs, but I've been rather set on a Newton since I've already got an eMate 300 and a few 68k Macs, and iirc I've still got a StyleWriter II somewhere I can pull out.
Also all of the Newtons have either 1 or 2 PCMCIA slots
>>51892250
I've never messed with Newtons, I have an eMate 300 but it has a broken internal monitor cable.
Are there still sites where you can find applications for them? If you know of any, I'd be interested so I can archive them.
>>51853549
As far as stereo receivers go, old receivers from my experience tend to have a higher noise floor, but also a warmer sound. Parts also go bad on them occasionally so keep that in mind.
Newer receivers can do fancy stuff that older ones simply can't do, however, like accepting digital inputs, and supporting stuff like surround sound if you're into that.

where I work we often burn appraisal documents to CDs because god damn near everyone has a drive and it's easier for dealing with old people who don't have email accounts
also lots of people still buy software on physical media and use it for years, my room mate has a brand new ultrabook but still uses Office 2k3.
>>51892614
In addition to the "cool factor," it would actually be pretty useful, as there were a number of great clock programs for Palm.
My favorite was BigClock. It was so customizable. You had two tabs along the top, each with four tabs along the bottom, for a total of eight "pages." Each "page" had two panels, top and bottom, that you could customize with local time, calendar, alternate time zones, alarms, or timers (count up or countdown). I especially like the ability to set a target date/time to count down to; I've never seen a watch able to do that, and even my phone can't do that.
