That's pretty vague. What kind of sound do you like? Warm and lush? Clear? Airy? Quick? Bassy? Aggressive? Buying headphones is all about sonic signatures.

The HD650 is bassy and fairly aggressive but it also has a really lush sound that might just put you to sleep. LCD-2s are one of my favorites but it doesn't have the powerful kick of the 650s, rather a liquid and flowing signature. Its bass is amazing though.
>>
>>51695913
Does anyone know if Takstar 80s have built-in crossfeed?

I have mine and they sound great, but I hear one channel quietly in the other, and this is tested on multiple sources.
>>
>>51696080
Ether is more balanced, closer to neutral. The LCD2 is dark, with more pronounced bass and less upper mids/highs. So the Audeze will give you a more colored, bassier sound that is more forgiving and less clear. The Ether has a very even, clear sound and is not bassy. The Ether also wins out in comfort by far. You could probably try both at the right shop.
>>

Ether isn't very bassy, for $1500 try to get something that meets all/most of your reqs

HE 6 or LCD 2 (possibly LCD 3 instead?) in that list by far, but it depends on what kind of sound you want. HE 560 is okay but still just a worse HE 6. LCD-X tries to reach a weird middle ground, I think it sounds unnatural but maybe you'll like it. I have a soft spot for the HD 600 as the first headphones I really loved but it doesn't belong on an endgame list.

Cross out 560 from that list
HE-6 is similar to the HD-800. Both are airy, quick and technical. The Sennheisers have superior imaging and soundstage and slightly better detail retrieval but to my ears the HE-6 sounds more pleasant.
LCD-X is kind of odd, it has a lot of the Audeze sound and IMO they tried to force a neutral sound into it rather than integrate it naturally. Then again a lot of people seem to like it and I listened to it only briefly. Try to audition them if you can!

I'd demo the LCD, the HE-6 and the HD-800 and see which you like the most.
>>
>>51696341
I have the LCD-X, I really like it BECAUSE it has both Audeze characteristics and an open, neutral sound. I agree that it's a bit unnatural though, plus I think the LCD-2s are better at what they do. The X is a jack of all trades

I have a pair of grado sr60s

how do you ensure that the cord connecting each pad (I don't know what the right term is) to the little Y shaped piece that leads each one to the main cord

just looking at them I can't tell if they have become twisted or have just warped and ended up strangely shaped/pulling in certain directions
>>
>>51696404

W-well their value as earmuffs wasnt really on my mind when I got them...

The standard Sony pads are shockingly poor quality, completely flakey after about a year of occasional usage. Every time I wore them I'd get little pleather flakes on/in/around my ears which was pretty fucking annoying.

The beyers do make them sound a good deal less metallic though so cooked ears is a good compromise.

HD800 and EQ it to your preferd tone balance. You can improve the FR but try doing that with imaging and soundstage.

Seriously, how can a heapdhone sound better than this? Are more expensive headphones just sidegrades to this one or, even worse, placebo? I can't honestly imagine how a music recording/movie can sound livelier and more real than what these headphones make it sound...

You're lucky that you can be so satisfied with them though. Don't try high end headphones unless you want to be disillusioned.

No problem. Regardless of impedance rate, the sensitivity still good. But could be quiet if your source is not powerful enough. DT250: 100/dB SPL DT880/990: 96/dB SPL

Since you prefer an natural total balance, but ready for a V-shaped type. And an open/semi headphone. Try hunting down a good deal on the DT880/990 250ohms. Or maybe even the K553 pro(closed), AD900x, etc.

None of them?

Comfort on the LCDs and HE-6 is just okay. If I were forced to I can wear them for long enough, but I'd rather not, the weight distribution on them stock is not great. You can buy all sorts of alternate earpads, aftermarket headbands, and support straps from the manufacturers to alleviate this.
HD800 and 560 are better at the comfort thing overall, but I can still think of many potential issues you can have with them.

I can't say I like the sound of any of them stock either, I have issues with all of them. They stop sounding as different once you apply EQ, never mind more advanced signal processing. So do what you want, demo them, take them home, and all that stuff, but bring an parametric EQ and make good use of it.

We can sit here and talk about the FR for days otherwise, this is most what head-fi talks about with headphones quality anyway. LCD bass is roughly flat and quite recessed in upper mid and treble, X just happens to add some peaks, and we can call peaky treble too neutral or revealing or ruthless or something.
HD800 is somewhat v-shaped, the bass has a bump, it has the treble peak that shitposters love to talk about, and a drop around 1kHz.
HE560 and HE6 certainly try to be flatter, but they have all these wiggles and peaks scattered in the treble and such.
>>
>>51698333

>>
>>51698285
Yeah I know, its FR isn't linear, it's noth high fidelity, blac blah blah...
Who cares? Fidelio really makes me feel like I'm assisting a live performance and every time I listen to a track I know very well I almost feel like I never listened to the track before. Personally I couldn't ask for more. When I listened to the Beatles for like the 1000th time yesterday, I almost felt like Ringo, John, Paul and George were all there singing for me.
>>
>>51698385
>two sounds at the same frequency and volume can sound very different on different headphones
Two tones won't. Instruments will, because there are multiple tones not matched in level.
Magnitude response dictates the level of the tones.

Timbre is perception of fundamental and harmonics, autocorrelation in the brain takes in later sounds that are similar to the initial impulse (reflected sound) and uses it to add information about the signal.

>>
>>51698822
So what headphones would you recommend then?
>>
>>51698760
No. But there are a lot of snake oil dacs, just like snake oil amps and power cords and shit.

A DAC needs three main things: a good chip, a well designed circuit, and a really nice power supply.

Pretty much all modern chips are good. Circuits are a toss up. And you can't cram a really good power supply into any tiny palm top unless it's a battery. And fuck battery circuits.

Most of this doesn't matter much below the $300 headphone line. Amps are more placebo than DAC's though. They are much easier to design with far smaller power requirements outside stat amps.
>>

I don't know about purely, but overwhelmingly so. EQ helps to eliminate that if you are careful not to make errors in adjustment.

Other things, leak, resonance have effects on the magnitude and are not so easy, if even possible, to separate out. Magnitude response always comes with phase which also comes with a time response and impulse function. The magnitude that you see isn't

Digital domain gives you tremendous freedom to manipulate the signal however you like, and more freedom to mess up signals in a subjectively bad way. Mechanical systems don't have quite that much freedom to do silly things like piecewise jumps, brickwall filters, and pre-ring.

Okay, so just bought some Phillips SHB3165 wireless headphones, as all my other headphones have died from wire-related injuries, and found that I'm needing a bluetooth adapter for it to work with my PC
Yes, I know, dumb move should've researched ahead, assumed it would come with an adapter
Should I send it back for something different, or should I just grab an ASUS USB Bluetooth adapter?

How can you suggest EQ to other people when you can't do it yourself?
>>
Just removed the foam on my piston v3 because they can sound like shit if wax gets stuck under/to the side if/in it. At first I just removed it with a needle but that stopped working, and removing it made fixed it again. Did it on just the left bud which sounds noticeably better now (more vivid mids-high mids I'd say) so I might do it on the right one too

Any drawbacks to removing it, aka how likely is it that they can break by removing the foam?
>>
So I bought Beyer DT 770 a little while back.

Im having one problem with them, and its that after i've used them for a period of time. They get quite heavy on the head, almost like they don't have enough padding on the headband.

Any one that's had the same problem and a nice fix for it?
