Does anyone have any experience with bone resonance headphones? I've always hated things in/on my ears, but traveling a lot I don't want everyone else to hear whatever I'm listening to. The technology seems like it'd be an amazing thing for me but reviews are all over the place about audio quality/noise pollution.

is there a way to have both the solid state and tube experience from one amp; I am only aware of Schiit's solution with their 'solid state tubes' is it any good and are there alternatives?

if you want bass get the x2. the 9500 sounds nothing like it. It's basically a bright 598, bass light. and it's not worth it anymore unless you get a deep discount.

Are earbuds allowed? I need some advice

HE-500
Ether
HE-560
HE-6
HD-800
(in order from being closest to the LCD-2 sound to the farthest/brightest)

HE-500 is pretty similar but a little more opened up and neutral, Ether is pretty damn neutral, HE-6 is my favorite among these but juuuust reaches the point of being too bright, HD-800 will probably ear fuck you without EQ.

Headphones don't need amp besides Stax.
Why pick 507 over 009 besides price?

Audeze has Audeze comfort, the lack of it rather. LCD-3 has substandard QC/build, XC has better sensitivity, but is bulky, with a response not better than the cheaper closed alternatives. Might as well get the X or the 2 for open Audeze, or even the laughably priced LCD-4.

W1000x is as peculiar sounding as any AT woodie.

HD800 might be okay (V-shaped), but HD 800 Schwarz is due for imminent release.

How are the X2s?

I primarily listen to rock and hip-hop, do they sound good with those genres?

They are okay as such (got them), but not particularly great value overall. You could get a bunch of Philips or even kinda Takstars or such and arrive with more or less the same...

I don't even have m50s, I was just using them as an example of a cheap someone well known headphone that can make beats sound like trash, and if that idiot winger that got them really wanted something that looked good and had bass and portability he should have traded his shitty beats in for vmoda m100

you've achieved 90% of what the highest-tier headphones are capable of. Improvements from here on out are going to be more subtle. if you're really "into" headphones, it's still worth buying more and spending more, but approach everything as a side-grade and stop thinking about finding the "best". there is no best, only what is close to your preferences, and even then you'll probably end up owning and using multiple headphones. for people who just want to get good headphones and call it a day going beyond $200 is pointless.

Full sized/circumaural. I used to have Logitech G430s (pic related) and the more ear-shaped pads were comfy. I'm currently using SteelSeries Siberia as a backup and the circular ear pads are way too small and uncomfortable.

I do not require a headset marketed to "gamers" or with a mic attached.

>Open or closed
I'd like something that my Blue Yeti mic won't pick up easily, but I also like to be able to hear things around me a bit.

>Comfort level
Comfy as fuk pls

>Preferred music
Chiptune/keygen, indie folk/rock like Fleet Foxes or Modest Mouse, prog rock, some hardcore/punk/metal stuff. In a nutshell, a lot of guitar and vocals, as well as some instrumental things. I will also be using the headset to play some vidya.

>Past headphones
Logitech G430 (Loved these)

Turtle Beach X12s (Weird constant hiss/echo when connected to power. Picked up otherwise undetectable coil whine from inside the PC.)

SteelSeries Siberia USB (Fucking awful)

Thanks anons!

HD600, it does not need an amp.

K612 is good but it does need an amp. Don't let the impedance of the headphone fool you. Sensitivity is what really matters.
>>
>>51724523
The voltage sensitivity difference between K612 and HD 600 is not THAT big but my experience with the full sized Sennheisers is similar. They really don't need an amp if you are going to plug them into your average motherboard directly.

558, do the foam mod. Though the upper-mids response is not that great for electric guitars. raise the upper mids and lower bass a bit with eq. the other good alternative is the xpt-100, but it doesn't have as good soundstage and sense of space as the sennheiser.

Actually, I think it's often the resellers that translate Chinese marketing materials very poorly on their own. No guarantees this is always the case, though.

Well, to give a concrete example, Xiaomi's own website is definitely okay to good (Pistons 3 here: http://www.mi.com/en/headphones3/ ) - unlike many of the reseller translations.

the k612 and k7xx are both better than the old audiophile darlings k701/702. well I guess most things sound like niggerbass coming from the k702, which was always a flawed audiophile scam. complaining about "poorfags" is a typical audiophile response when they realize their overpriced headphones have been bested by something cheaper.
>>
>>51725169
K612 has no niggerbass, if anything it's rolled off in the bass just like K702. K702 is more colored in the upper mids and highs compared to K612. K7xx is a K702 with a bit better upper mids and generally more balanced FR. K712 is the most colored of the lot and the one that could be considered as niggerbass. It's a warm sounding headphone with a rollercoaster FR from mids to highs.

damn, my soundblaster z has 22.11ohm output impedance according to goldenears. that makes me sad... but exactly how does it work? does that affect higher or lower impedance headphones more, or does that not correlate at all?
>>
>>51725948
That's a pretty standard spec for line outputs from computer gear. Not exactly bad but not great. It affects low impedance headphones. The idea is that you should have your input impedance(headphones) eight times as high as the source impedance to avoid poor damping and coloration caused by the output impedance.

thank you, this is exactly the info i was looking for. one question, when you say "eight times," do you mean you should literally try for it to be exactly eight times the amount, or at LEAST 8 times? because from how i understand it, the latter would make more sense
>>
>>51726063
Eight times or more. Pic related is a nominal 300 Ohm headphone with a large impedance spike around 100Hz driven from difference source impedance. Deviation from neutral response is there but it's nowhere near as big as that on the UE Super.fi.
>>
>>51726062
It's not even bump limit, retard.
>>
>>51713126
Just shorten it to nobass and nigger bass.
>>
>>51726125
right. thanks a lot man, it seems this is quite important. right now my x2s with an impedance of only 30 ohms are being colored a decent amount then, by an output impedance of 22.11. i imagine my integrated output impedance would be even higher?
>>
>>51726159
we only need one thread so it isn't spamming the catalog so it doesn't matter
>>
>>51713181
Yeah that's a good deal. They used to be around $55 or maybe less but then they started getting pushed by reviewers now they inflated the price to $90-100.
>>
>>51726233
Integrated varies from 2 Ohms to near 100 Ohms. It's never specced by the motherboard manufacturers. And given how smooth the impedance to frequency response of those X2s is, you might not be coloring them much at all. Different headphones react differently to source impedance. Even if you are not getting a frequency response deviation, poor damping can still cause headphones to sound like they are lacking detail. Especially the bass tends to suffer from poor damping making it sound loose.

Look at it this way:

-Voltage in a circuit, such as headphone plugged into computer, is distributed proportionate to the impedance of each part.
-Headphone impedance is generally not flat with frequency, it goes up and down. Exceptions are planar magnetics and single dynamic driver in-ears, flat impedance across hearing.
-If the impedance of the output is too high in proportion to the headphone, voltage is wasted on the electronics before getting to the headphone
-If the headphone has an overwhelming impedance compared to the output, the voltage is basically constant at all frequencies, and the headphone gets equal voltage at all frequencies

If we take a typical electrodynamic headphone, it will have rising impedance in the midbass and highs to a lesser extent. Therefore, if you start adding constant impedance before it, less voltage gets to everything else besides the bass. This would make a headphone sound midbassy,

Phase and impedance - how familiar are you with trigonometry?
>>
>>51726566
well, a lot of the complaints about the x2 is mud, so it sounds like it would help. as an owner of them, i sort of agree, but ive heard a lot worse. but my setup is far less than perfect. id be willing to bet a proper amp/dac would be helpful at least a little to me.

trig? no sir. but again, thank you, i am learning a good amount. i also did not know that planar magnetics would be an acception to this. this kind of goes against how people say that planars are usually quite power hungry. or rather, it probably makes sense if you understand the whole thing fully. what makes them exceptions to this varying impedance?
>>

>planar magnetics would be an acception to this. this kind of goes against how people say that planars are usually quite power hungry
Impedance (Z) is made of part resistance (R) and reactance (j), which in turn can be broken into inductance and capacitance. Inductors are the little coils on a circuit board, and capacitors are made by a bunch of metal plates that are insulated from each other.
Resistors/resistance is constant across frequency, reactive parts are not - they go up and down.

The impedance of a planar dynamic is flat because the physical arrangement minimizes reactive parts, it is resistive and constant across all of hearing.
The planar design is inherently not well optimized to sensitivity, so it needs lots of magnets and/or power to compensate. What the flat impedance means is that the voltage loss is not frequency dependent. You are still wasting voltage at the amp, but it is the same at all frequencies.

The phase refers to how much reactive part there is compared to the resistive part (as in the legs of a right triangle), but it is low enough most of the time (non-electrostatic) that you can cut it out to get a rough estimate.

With 1 Volt, output Z of 1 Ohm, headphone impedance of 9, the headphone gets 0.9 Volts. Change the headphone to 4 Ohms, headphone now gets 0.8 Volts. Hopefully you get the idea.

>Schiits are shit hiss monsters

just like probably half of you faggots here I got the 598s on black friday, but I'm still in the market for a dac/amp. been looking at the magni/modi as they seem to be the most recommended for that ~$200 mark.

if apparently they are literally shit then what alternatives would you guys recommend? i know the o2/odac is often recommended as an alternative despite apparently sounding identical, for more dollars.
>>
>>51727843
You realize this is a shitposting compilation right?
Magni 2 noise floor is lower than Magni, and it wasn't a problem for 598 anyway, more so IEMs.

>acception
wow i did type acception, hahaha. maybe im tired.
thats a lot to take in though senpai. im trying very hard.

but if im understanding, that means planars should be better if youre worried about coloration from a shitty amp affecting dynamic transducers.

which means that you would want those if you cant also get a dac/amp, if your current ones suck. volume will be lower, but it wont color any frequencies.

very interesting.
>>
>>51728019
what do you mean your source is computer speakers? youre going to be plugging the headphones into some port they have?
>>

>thats a lot to take in though senpai. im trying very hard.
I think I went overboard on the explanation again.

>but if im understanding, that means planars should be better if youre worried about coloration from a shitty amp affecting dynamic transducers.
>which means that you would want those if you cant also get a dac/amp, if your current ones suck. volume will be lower, but it wont color any frequencies.
That sums it up.
As a note, not all planar magnetics are low sensitivity, but they have to make use of more clever tricks and trade-offs to get them to be moderately sensitive like a normal dynamic. Heavy Neo magnets were one of them.

If you want to know the difference in dB from the different voltages it goes something like:

20 log (V1/V2) = dB
20 log (0.9/0.8)
1.0 dB
>>
>>51728118
Yeah, they have a regular headphone jack.

Sorry if that was confusing,
>>
>>51728429
>I think I went overboard on the explanation again.
no, i dont think so! you have a lot to explain if someone is going to understand. thats why theres so much literature for this stuff. its also why perfect devices for these applications dont exist, because the subjectivity part of it makes learning the objective parts more difficult, at least if you take a non structured chaotic learning approach like self learning through the internet.

anyway, i pretty much get it now. i appreciate the planar magnetic technology more. not that i was doubting them, but... this is very nice.
>>
>>51728588
Ok, more stuff then.

Impedance can be said to be the ratio of current needed to get a certain voltage. Less impedance means more current for the same voltage, and the reverse for high impedance. Voltage from an amplifier determines loudness from the headphone, but the amplifier also needs to create current.
Current demands are often a limiting factor with electronics, this applies to the output straight from your computer/phone/DAC/whatever. Audio amplifiers have a very, very high input impedance so that they take nearly all voltage, no matter what other things happened along the way, and then they take the current demand off the other electronics.

You will find out that loudspeakers with 1 ohm impedance are almost impossible to use. Besides the voltage division calculation I showed before, the current demand with such a speaker would be ridiculous.

So the /hpg/ meme advice is sansa clip+ with portable DAC/AMP. Which one DAC/Amp?
