I am trying to understand my battery predicament here /g/

I bought my used X200 some time ago and had a Lenovo standard 6cell. After about two months it shit itself with the yellow blinking light on the ultrabase. I decided to purchase a used official 9cell and a new Anker 6 cell. The Anker has been working fine for close to a year now but the official 9cell gave out after only three months.

I charge both batteries daily on the Ultrabase of my X200 and can not understand for the hell of me why lenovo batteries can not last me more than a few months.

Last night I popped the X200 on its ultrabase and the battery was charging fine. I wake up this morning to a flashing yellow light. Might it be the ultrabase that is at fault?

I understand that there is some IC that locks up if a battery gets undervolted/overvolted but I can not see why it keeps happening in my situation as I am a careful user.

Any tips to repair my broken cells or things that I might be doing wrong? I would appreciate some advice.

sup /tpg/. My laptop's motherboard died today and I'm planning on upgrading to a Thinkpad (before I was using a shitty Samsung laptop). Here's what I need:

Something under $800 (or 900 at most, if there was a Thinkpad that's wildly better for a bit more I would consider it)
8GB RAM
Great mobile CPU. The only thing I really need the laptop for is Android development and running Android Emulator, so CPU is the big problem.

Doesn't need to have a SSD as I have one that can be installed in the laptop already; it would be a plus though. Weight doesn't matter much either as it's mostly a workstation for me, but 5+ pounds is pushing it. Screen size does not matter but it's a plus.

What would you all recommend? Thank you based /tpg/.
>>
>>47754445
Problematic. You seem to have the carrying capabilities of a frail old man but oh well.

You could get a T430 with a quadcore chipset, and all the specs you stated for less then 800$. Weighs about 2,3KG so within limits.

I'd honestly recommend you to get a W520 or T530 with a quadcore chipset since they got a much more efficient cooling and have better screen panels.
>>
>>47754521
Well weight isn't super important; it's just nice to have something lighter because I will be carrying it every day in a backpack while travelling. I'll look into the W520 and T530, thanks. Any other models I should be considering?
>>
>>47754568
W530 should be hard to come by, but if you can score one then it's all good.

>>

>>
>>47749200
I don't think Lenovo has been manufacturing new batteries for the X200 for a couple years now so everything you can buy will be old stock. And lithium batteries have a shelf life of only a few years.

You could try replacing all the cells in the battery with new 18650s but that might confuse the power management chips in the battery (some of them need to be continuously hooked up to power while you do the swap).

>>47754568
You could actually afford a new T450 using the Barnes and Noble Gold affiliate site.

I'd recommend the x220t

First gen mobile core i7's are trash

the i5 on the x220t is about 50% faster than the X201t's and you won't have your computer fan running loudly during normal tasks

also it has Sata III i believe, so if you update to an SSD you'll get better performance

Why do my used Lenovo batteries keep failing after a few months of use?
Has anyone had problems with their batteries not lasting? Is it simply because of age?
Both a used 6 cell and a used 9cell have died on my X200 after only ~3months.
Is this just the shit luck on the account of buying used batteries?
I bought a new 6cell Anker and it has lasted e the longest time.... I regret not getting two of them when they were cheap

>>
Holy shit /g/ I'm livid. I just got my t420 a week or two ago and somebody managed to crack the screen while I was at work. Please tell me that it's a cheap fix, pic related.
>>
>>47756853

it's kind of weird, my first X220t battery died about 2 years in, during it's final months however I had it a few nights up rendering stuff at full cpu power, and then it died

I began reading about batteries and to make them last longer:

-Avoid high temperatures, this might have damaged mine, it was plugged it while I did the heavy render stuff, but it might have been affected by the heat

-Don't let the battery drain completely, letting the battery drain too much damages it faster, you should recharge it when it goes 40-30%, the lower it gets the more damage it does

-Don't charge it all the way, some programs allow you to not charge the battery entirely, but only 90%~, This improves the battery lifespan I believe

now with a second battery, I've followed those steps and so far I've hadn't had any issues yet, almost 2 years with it as well
>>
>>47756853
Fuck man, I wish there was a T420 compatible Anker battery. From what I've seen they have the best ratings when it comes to replacement batts.
>>
>>47756880
Buy a new screen, get the WXGA+ panel and the needed cable.
>>
>>47756259

we bought a Y50 for our office, Changing the display is actually easier than finding the display itself

takes 5~ min with no special tools other than a screwdriver

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BqVuCKew1E

you can search on the internet for panels that fit it, they are usually sold through ebay, a good IPS one from LG costs around $90-110 which is the one we got, and boy with that panel it becomes a great laptop
>>
>>47756957
Cash is really tight, how much do you think that'd cost me?
>>
>>47756955
>-Don't let the battery drain completely, letting the battery drain too much damages it faster, you should recharge it when it goes 40-30%, the lower it gets the more damage it does
Easier said than done. I burned through 15 cells daily at work and tried not to use it after each battery hit 10% or lower. By the time I get home I just plop both batteries onto my ultrabase and leave them charging until the next morning. Maybe, I just wan't treating them carefully.
>>47756956
Anker, from my experience, is probably the best aftermarket battery seller. I have had a 15000 mAh powerbank that's been working flawlessly and the 6 cell for my X200 is still going strong as well.
Long story short: don't buy OEM for your chinkpad when they havent been manufacturing them in years. You're only going to get screwed.
>>
>>47756990

https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/IBM-Lenovo/THINKPAD~T420~4177/

the 1366x768 panel is around $50-60

the 1600x900 higher resolution ones go for about the same but if you currently have a 1366*768 you need an extra $10~ cable
>>
What are the reputable third party battery sellers?
I only know of Anker.

>>
>>47757103
Fug, there went the money I was saving to use on a new battery and SSD.
>>
>>47756853
worn cell with lots of cycles when you got it
shitty sanyo cells
letting it discharge to 0% and keeping it that way

That's the three that i can come up with, my 9cell for my x200 is still at 90% if it's original capacity after 2 years of usage.
>>
How do I set my think pad x201 on Zulu to to stop charging the battery at 90%

I am looking to buy a tiny kawaii-pad, but am not sure which one would be better.

I am looking at either the x200 or the x60. I am only thinking of screen size, in which the x60 wins by having a taller screen. Still, I see I can get the x200 with far better specs for the same price.

Thoughts?

>The only thing I really need the laptop for is Android development and running Android Emulator, so CPU is the big problem.

Save yourself, don't emulate.

Physical devices are dirt cheap and allow you to test hardware capabilities that the emulator can't - you will hate yourself if you ever need to test camera-related functionality.

Android Studio can currently preview layouts for any API level at any screen format nearly instantly, without creating any virtual devices.

The ARM emulator will never be fast/usable regardless of your system specs, the x86 Atom emulator with HAXM is blazing fast and usable but buggy and doesn't catch architecture-related use cases (e.g., native code will act differently).

If you need black-box experience testing, Google Chrome can now run Android apps natively (see Google ARC) and they will run faster than most production devices.
