Didn't see one up. Someone come along to fill in gaps.

My problem: My laptop died on Saturday so I had to look at my friend's old Thinkpads as replacements. Only one of them worked - his X201 Tablet. I was really excited to use it, but on boot it only gives "Fan error" and shuts. The fan would boot up but then would immediately turn off. I replaced the fan as told by nearly every forum on the internet only to find this one also spins up for a few seconds, then shuts down resulting in "Fan error" again. The actual grate on the heatsink is clean (part that points outward) but the fan still does not stay spinning. I tried blowing on it to keep it going, I tried flicking it with my fingers... Nothing is working.

>tl;dr new fan still results in "fan error" on Thinkpad X201 - wat do???
>>
I had this problem. I replaced the cpu heat sink by one I bought off ebay. If you plan on doing this, make sure you have some thermal paste as well.
>>
>X201
>old
underageb& detected

just press escape when it says fan error
>>
>>47738200
I do press escape but it still shows "Fan error". And among the other Thinkpads, the lot was old. He had the X201 which I claimed as soon as I saw it.

He also had two T61s with Centrino Duos in them and W95.

>>47738185
So it's not the fan, it's the heatsink that needs replacing?
>>
>>47738238
i'd make sure the heatsink is actually touching the cpu, some tp use a shitty thick thermal pad in place of thermal grease. Worse case you buy another heatsink/fan assembly or motherboard for $50
>>
>>47738340
Okay. I'll go check it out here soon. My fiancee's grandpa who used to work with IBM said I may also need to check the assembly for dust.

Worst scenario is I need to buy a new assembly for $30.
>>
I bought an x220 for a hundred bucks today with dock. Did I do good /g/?
>>
>>47738238
>W95

They shipped with Vista, newfag.
>>
>>47738438
If it's in good condition, I think so. I wish mine was $100...
>>
>>47738463

>>

If so, niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.
>>
>>47738470
I got it from my brother he used the thing for a total of like 2 weeks.
>>
Any of the current gen thinkpads that is passable ?
>>
>>47738495
Damn. Really good score then.
>>
>>47738512
XX50's seem better than XX40's, mainly because they brought the Trackpoint buttons back.

They're probably solid, but I'm biased against new laptops in general because I think they're overpriced and trying too hard to be like a MacBook.
>>
>>47738512
Define passable

>>47738560
You can put physical buttons on the X40 line now.
>>
>>47738512
No, you know what? I'm going to change my stance.

>T450
>No physical volume buttons
>Function layer bullshit
>Print Screen where context menu should be
>Internal battery
>Inferior MacBook style screen hinge

Not worth, in my opinion.

>>47738630
Yeah derped and forgot about it, but it sucks that you have to mod a brand new laptop if you do this. Plus it still suffers from the issues I outlined above.
>>
>>47738630
>Define passable

/g/ approved in other words
>>
>>47738681
Any T/W/X series with physical buttons, and if it's a more modern one at least a FHD panel.
>>
>>47738680
>T450
>No physical volume buttons
I agree.

>Function layer bullshit
You can turn that off.

>Print Screen where context menu should be
Menu key is gone from most modern business laptops like Latitudes/Precisions and EliteBooks

>Internal battery
One internal, one external.
Personally I'd take a internal battery that I can still replace that would give me 10 hours of battery life rather than a external one that would give me 8 hours.

>Inferior MacBook style screen hinge
What's wrong with dropped hinges if they still perform like old hinges?
>>
Alright faggots. Should I just sell my x240 and buy the t450s or just upgrade my x240 trackpoint? Is the keyboard bigger?
>>
>>47738734
Forgot to mention that I prefer the old hinges as you can have ports on the rear of the laptop.

Power and ethernet should *always* be at the back of the laptop.
>>
>>47738734
>You can turn that off.
Yes but it makes no physical volume buttons more of an issue. Of course this isn't a deal breaker it's just a dumb design decision.

>Menu key is gone
True, but it doesn't make much sense to put Print Screen there either. Just weird.

I agree with you on battery, it just makes it less convenient to replace. Do the new TP's actually get 10 hour battery life though?

>What's wrong with dropped hinges if they still perform like old hinges?
They can't open as far, and they prevent any ports from being on the rear of the laptop
>>
>>47738761
T450s is quite expensive now, and wouldn't be much of an improvement over your x240.That being said, i'm assuming you have the IPS panel.

Just do the trackpad swap and enjoy.

>>47738770
>this

so much

I love that the Ethernet&powerplug are the back of my T420, i just plug it in easily from a discrete hole in the desk and i don't have to see them (I have 3 chargers anyways)

You know Alt+Print screen takes a screen shot of the current active window right?

Makes sense to put them next to each other for ease of use.

>They can't open as far
What?

Yeah, I agree with the ports, forgot to mention that: >>47738770

>>47738863
Sadly Dell are the only ones that have sane port placement...Lenovo on the slim models have gone full retard.
>>
>>47738884
I agree with you, my next laptop is either going to be one of the slim precision models, or a rather petite latitude.

Unless Dell go full retard like lenovo.
>>
>>47738863
So going from x to t isn't much of a difference when it comes to keyboard size?
>>
>>47738884
What the fuck?! They do this? Props to Lenovo for making drop hinges functional, but having the screen now go slightly under the body of the laptop seems dumb to me. Can you rotate it to this position while it's sitting flat on a desk?

>Makes sense to put them next to each other for ease of use.
Okay, but it makes more sense to put them someplace more similar to every 87 or 104 key desktop keyboard on the planet.
>>
>>47738963
More like no difference
>>
>>47738937
Just to let you know, the M3800 is basically a rebadged XPS 15 with fancy drivers, so if you want a M3800 buy a XPS 15 and save the money.

The E6540 quad core has throttling issues, I had to send mine back.

>>47738975
Yes, as far as I am aware these are the only usable drop hinges on a laptop and you can do this flat on the desk.

The bezel has to go under the chassis otherwise you couldn't have such a wide angle in the first place.
>>
>>47738963
Literally the same keyboard.

>>47738997
I'm aware about the E6450 issue, i was more thinking in the line of either the E7450 or the E7250.

But my purchase is only in quite a few years to come. I still got a hefty army service after i finish studying.
>>
>>47738997
Right. That's the reason that I didn't think this was possible, and why I still don't like the idea of drop hinges doing it. Thanks for the info though.
>>
>>47739024
Broadwell 7000 series has removed the dedicated volume controls, I'm fucking pissed at Dell for doing that, there's 0 reason to do so.

I'm thinking about buying a new thinkpad Yoga 15". I need it for mainly for work (programming), office and internet, so I would take the i7, 16GB and the 256GB SSD.
What do you guys think? Good idea, bad idea?

I heard the low voltage CPU is pretty shitty. Can anyone confirm?
>>
>>47739024
False. x240 is smaller. Some of the symbol keys are smaller on the right.

Yes, you can rotate to this without scraping the desk

Should have checked the catalog before I made a thread a few minutes ago. Might as well post it here.

>Sorry, I know you guys hate repair threads, but I'm not about to ask fucking Yahoo Answers. I just got a $350 refurbished Think Pad, and the first time I tried to turn it on, I got a fan error and it shut off. I took off the keyboard, blew on and manually turned the fan a bunch of times, hoping to dislodge any dust or crums or whatever the fuck might be clogging it. I turned it on and the fan briefly made the sound fans are supposed to make, but it lasted 2 seconds and it was really choppy, then it stopped moving. But the computer turned on successfully, and I'm using it right now. Did the fan just turn off because it isn't needed at the moment? Will it turn on as necessary later, or should I be worried about this?

Sup /g/. Got my x220 in, not sure if I got it for a decent price.

Okay so I bought it for $220 on ebay. I bought it because it had an IPS screen, which to me, seemed like a decent investment, since I would only have to upgrade RAM + add a SSD down the line.

So now my concerns are this
1) There are I guess how I should say "White spots" on my screen. I opted for buying one with the IPS in it because I was hoping to AVOID the charades with finding a solid IPS panel I'll try and get a decent picture to go with it, but any idea what they are? Don't seem like dead pixels, but don't appear when the screen is off or dimmed either.

2) The screen seeems slightly loose in the left side. It flexes at the little crack on the back of the lid and I can see the inside. Not sure if that is reattachedable.

Other than that, body is in okay condition, little scuffed, etc. Other than that, probalby need a new battery.

What do you think? Sell it and try again? Give it a little love?
>>
>>47740959
Okay I just touched the processor guard and it's hot as fuck. Should I worry now?
>>
>>47740983
make sure to get your oily fingers all over the pins and socket.
don't use it until you've replaced the fan. it is literally a 3 dollar part.

>>47740959
OP here having same problem.

Someone earlier said to first replace fan and if that does not work, replace entire heatsink.

I just didn't want to deal with finding a reseller that has IPS panels without dead pixels, but oh well

Cheers, anon

Can someone tell me why I shouldn't get a new chrome book instead of an old thinkpad? I'm really not seeing the point here.
>>
>>47742852
The reason is pretty much because you can get more bang for your buck if you get a rather recent one. If you put a lightweight linux distro on some older ones, you can have a very usable and durable computer for cheap.

Chromebooks are okay if you can get a GNU/linux distro on them, but there are many where you can't do that on.
>>
>>47742852
A $250 ThinkPad would get you an i5-2520m. 320GB HDD and 4GB RAM. And the Hard drive and RAM can easily be upgraded, unlike that Chromebook. And the Sandy Bridge i5 would have much better performance too.

Uh, no. it's from scratches on the waveguide from tiny amounts of grit working their way in. Only the approximately sealed tablet screens are mostly immune.

I just did this a few days ago to my old T61 I picked up a few months ago for like $30 that had a buzzing fan/overheating issue.

I should have taken pics cause that thing was chock full of dust. Took out the fan, disassembled the fan, re-lubed, re-installed, re-pasted, re-assembled, now the temps never go over the 60s.
>>
>>47745856

How hard/necessary is it to actually disassemble the fan instead of just cleaning it out?
>>
>>47745875
Not hard at all, just cut some tape, bend back some small tabs, the fan comes right out of the heatsink.

As for the plastic impeller fan it-self, it can be pulled right out of the assembly with little to no effort.

How necessary? Well it depends, how old is your Thinkpad?

If its newer, something like an T230 or whatever, you may not need to disassemble just yet, unless you work in a really dusty/dirty place. But something closer in age to a T61-T400, you may want to go and give it a good clean/lube.
>>
>>47745975
It's a t420 but I'm dropping a quad core in it so I'd like it to be in tip top shape. So just pull it apart, clean it out, and lube it?
>>
>>47746022
Pretty much just that. I imagine the design of the T420's heatsink isn't too far off from the T61, so the process should be fairly simple.
