That first half was bad. Really bad. Nothing but lame and forced exposition. The second half with Ludo was neat but not funny. I didn't actually laugh once during the whole episode. I hope this isn't indicative of the quality of the entire season.

I never really liked the "Toffee will regenerate from the missing finger" theory, but since we've literally seen part of his arm stripped to the bone that's looking more likely.

When I first heard her voice I thought it wasn't cute enough for her looks. But it grew on me hard. It's unique, wacky and kind of makes her seem more strong/mature. Which reflects her character perfectly. I can't imagine Star having another voice anymore.

Stars VA is alright. She has to sound like a hyperactive funny bunny because Star acts like that. When she talks normal, she sounds really good though - and when she talks crazy, that just shows the VAs skill (whether you like it or find it annoying).

Someone once described it as "benign cancer" and for what I saw of it I agree, it is because it doesn't spread.
Surprisingly enough of all the cancerous generals the Star VS fans contained themselves, limiting threads to weekends for example and not really spamming their content all over the board.
All generals are cancer but I give points to the Star VS guys for at least knowing how to keep themselves in check and contained.

I think it's one of those odd scenarios on /co/ at present, in that the quality of posts in general threads just seems to fall apart much quicker now/ Particularly when there's long delays between the injection of new content of the cartoon/comic in question. Star vs. would really benefit from 2 episodes a week in my mind, there's just not enough beneath the surface to sustain threads for very long, even with the rather small posting numbers.
Although it could just be a slow time for /co/ as a whole at present, perhaps when summer really sets in and shows come back of hiatus there'll be an injection of posters to keep things moving. That or posters are just getting way too efficient at burning through discussion in the first few days of a new injection of content.

Well so far his goals beyond his opposition to the Butterfly family are pretty vague, but I think its safe to say that everything that's happened thus far has gone according to his plans. What really strike me as odd is that both wands seem corrupted in a big way at this point. Ludo's wand is clearly "grown" from Toffee's arm while the little italian unicorn in Star's wand has been possessed and I think taken on some of Toffee's traits (bipedal movement, buff bod, fangs). Glossaryck as much as said that the "Cleaving" of the wand in addition to being a physical division of the wand also means that the wand has been fused with some outside influence, I'm guessing Toffee. As for his motivation Lobsterclaws showed us that the wand is fairly fickle in nature and easily influenced by the emotions of whoever is currently holding it. Even if the monsters were to take the wand by force all Star would need to do is take it back. However by becoming a part of the wand Toffee has, possibly irreversibly, secured its power for monsterkind or perhaps only for himself.

The first half was REALLY good. Glossaryck was spot-on, Star breaking down to call her Mom (which she would have NEVER done before she broke the wand), that spot of existential horror when Marco found that...thing...in the closet, the revelation that Star writes about Marco in her journal, and the bigger revelation that she would INSTANTLY tap her inner power to keep that a secret.
That little bop on the nose she gave him.
Perfection.
And then the second half aired, and it wasn't just better, it was...perfection better.
Like Samurai Jack, only accessible.
And it wasn't even the hero, it was the VILLAIN. Star showing up as Ludo's spirit animal, and leading him to the Toffee wand!
How surreal, how incredible!
If that doesn't get nominated for (and win) awards, it will be a crime.

I think it wasn't just that but also how he'd made an effort to fight it off and escape from it, then sort of indirectly led to it falling through its own web. But yeah it wasn't done perfectly.
It was a good episode and I like that they're not afraid to deviate from the Star and Marco stuff, but it seems to be getting kind of overpraised. The beginning especially was a little weak.

One thing I really liked about the first two episodes is that they basically re-introduced central characters. Highlighting differences like Star's brashness, and Marco's organization, but also showing that they're both goofy in their own ways. (pic possibly related)
Have to give props to Ludo's voice actor for those pitiful groans and whimpers during the starting parts of that episode. It was actually endearing to see him harden and adapt to his new circumstances.He's still pretty selfish, but it feels like his command carries more weight than a child's whining now.

The most likely scenario is that he'll go after Mewnie, either to draw out Star or just for vengeance's sake. That could have been a part of Toffee's plan, given the wand shard wand seems to be constructed around his discarded arm bone. We'll have to wait and see though, given the next few episodes are likely set on earth.

They used it as they had to separate the two of them, whilst still setting up their shared continuity from the season finale. It's not a particularly clever solution, but it did the job. We know where Star and Marco are at after their ordeal in the finale and Star has a clear direction going forward, similar to her initial goal of learning to master her wand but now it's made more pressing given the creepy influences the cleaving has had on the wand.
Marco is still just Marco; I suppose you could argue him digging through her secrets is meant to show the potential rift that could appear between the two, but I don't think it was done very well if that was a goal of the episode.

Well it comes back to the themes of the show, Star was supposed to be a girl with delusions of magic initially, the show revolving around this girl with magical adventures in the normal world that are all in her head. This obviously changed to be real magic, given the initial atmosphere of Star was somewhat depressing, but I think the real world element is still intact so the viewer can connect with the setting more easily. As such, I can't imagine that karate masters in the show would have any special powers, their normal skill would just be played up in a comedic manner as Marco's abilities already are, given he's just a green belt at present.

Toffee's suit could be made of something special, considering the only thing that survived the explosion at the end of season 1 is his suit and the super duper indestructible magic cage that he trapped Marco in.
Toffee has had access to advanced technology (or magitech?) before. He had a spy drone and a special item that could teleport the wand right to Ludo in Mewnipendance Day, as well as a wand-tracking radar device in Marco Grows a Beard.

I think he'll try to amass some more creatures in his army. In a preview, you see him getting thrown out of a tavern of monsters, and you see a rat and his old fly monster in addition to his spider and eagle. I'm guessing he'll try to get new soldiers right away, or try to fight Star (overconfident because he has the wand shard) get beaten and then realize he needs more muscle.
I think for the season finale, he'll successfully steal Star's wand and somehow manage to cleave it back together giving him all the power and his big boy body (which is why they introduced the ability for Star to cast wandless magic this season.)
I don't know how Ludo would manage to cleave it back together, I think it's going to be more complicated than just shoving the shard into the wand, and character development aside, Ludo still isn't exactly a genius. Maybe Toffee will show up by then and pull some shenanigans.

As you suggested, I'd imagine Toffee would play a part in that. Perhaps he was setting Ludo up behind the scenes to ascend from his previous, inadequate self and genuinely become a threat for Mewnie. There's an obvious issue here, in that, Ludo is so incompetent he seems like a poor choice for an elaborate plan like this. But who knows what Toffee is planning, perhaps he knows more than he puts on; that would help to explain his actions in the S1 finale in that he could have just taken the wand.
Another possibility is that his primary plan was focused on Star's side of the wand, the seeming corruption acting as a 'threat from the inside' type deal, Star is reckless enough to not be cautious with how she treats the wand even with the obvious damage. Again Toffee would have to have some pretty advanced knowledge of the workings of both the wand and Mewnie for such a scheme to come together, but given we've been shown him doing research and having an astute knowledge of reading others and manipulating them it's a possibility in my mind. I just hope that, if this sort of plan is the reality, the more able members of Mewnie in the form of the Queen, King and Glossaryck figure out the scheme/issue but by then it's too late.
I also thought about a possible recreation of the monster massacre being Toffee's overall goal, building Ludo up to play that role but evening the odds this time. But there's a pretty big stretch there, given the monsters could just lose an even battle and it depends on Ludo who only just sorted his shit out.

The manipulation angle makes sense, but my concern is with the 'eggs in one basket' issue that Toffee's focus on Ludo seems to suggest. Though if Toffee is as old as many of us have theorized about, given his reaction to the monster massacre mention, it could be a sufficient enough solution to that dilemma. It allowd him to have tried this sort of thing in the past and failed, or just spent his time in this shadows making sure everything was perfect for the one time he does it, which would coincide well with the idea that he's going to manipulate Ludo the whole way.
I personally like to think he saw some potential in Ludo, even if he is incompetent most of the time. Ludo seemed more intelligent than the other monsters initially, but steadily got less intelligent as the season went on. A common issue for a lot of villains, but hey hopefully with his experience in the wild he'll be much more capable on his own this time around.

I would describe Clarence as having a little something for everyone—we put in a ton of film/pop-culture references for people who like that stuff and we satirize a lot of ideas and social concepts. If you like grounded, down-to-earth stories, we have that. If you like weird, experimental narrative, we have that, too. There's lots of different animation styles, lots of comedy, and hopefully unexpected storytelling. People who like the character development in other shows will notice that we do it as well but in subtle ways—it rewards you for watching the show in order like Arrested Development. Clarence has lots of Easter eggs and callbacks to earlier episodes, and lots of running gags. Hopefully people will give Clarence a chance and see it's more than a "dumb chubby kid show."

People always saying shit like "Tom shouldn't be redeemed," "I want Tom to be a true villain," etc. are so confusing to me. For the most part all he did was act pissy around Star, and though he would've attacked Marco that was taken care of in about .5 seconds. Blood Moon soulbinding thing could be seen as sketchy but episode shows Star was aware of it and that he wasn't trying to trick/force her into it so much as he wanted the two of them to be "chosen" by the moon itself.
And while all of the above would definitely be annoying, it doesn't really come off as villainous. Well, I could see him being evil in a school-shooter kinda way if something pushes him over the edge, but that's not happening on a Disney cartoon.
