Like most shows you need something to make up an episode (in this case murders) but the overall plot never gets sidetracked because they arent like 22-24 episode seasons and that plot has steadily done its job. A psyhic procedual is just zany antics that lead the odd thinking main character a few steps ahead of the police and most dont go further than that.

All beautiful, witty, successful people... how can you not notice this? I'm not saying actors should be ugly, but this should clue you in to the target audience of this show... Even if you take out that ONE character who's currently out of a job, you have to consider he's depicted as the perfect guy who happens to be down on his luck. But for the sake of argument let's give you that one character who's ONLY young, beautiful, charming, and witty, and doesn't have a high-skill job.
Having a main plotline is nice, but the show is 90% about the procedural and the love life of the young and the restless (and lost of monologues by the main character about her deep insights on human nature)

Protip: If you are unsure if you will like a show or not, watch episode 3 first. Episode 1 and 2 tend to be boring set up. Episode 3 tends to be where the show is in it's natural rhythm.

Only the last few episodes of season 1 get into the "mytharc" or the overarching story of the series... and the series still suck because it's almost entirely a procedural cop show.

The bad ones, yes. This show is a procedural cop show combined with Beverly Hills 90210 an vampires that eat brains instead of suck blood.
The actors are good.
The direction and cinematography is good.
Even the overarching plot is good (except for the finale of season 2 that creates an entirely implausible villain, even in a world where zombie vampiers receive memories from the brains they eat)
But the characters themselves are a teenage girl's idea of perfect people (rich beautiful yuppies), they have relationship issues like a fucking small-town highschool on steroids, everything in the procedural aspect is resolved really tidily all the time,
Basically the "mytharc" of the show is good, but it's watered down by teenage drama bullshit, and the fact that everyone's a too-witty too-beautiful too-successful bikini supermodel astrophysicist is super grating. But that's the show's schtick - smart pretty people who come up with a witty rejoiner all the time as they fight crime.
Which sucks.
So yeah, this show could have been vastly improved with copious sex scenes.
