I think the abruptness of the cliffhanger is just a byproduct of how the episodes are built.
Many episodes are explicit multiparters that abruptly end for the next one to pick up immediately where they left off.
Because of the half-season nature and uneven number of episodes, that split just happened to cut off in the middle of a multipart.
Those who have seen only Shin need not apply.

I think Keith is characterized well enough, but he does need a bit more screen time to really show him off well. He's standoffish and a bit of a loner; he's the first to leave when they were waiting around during the haunted episode. He's headstrong to the point of being a bit hotblooded. And he's pretty self righteous and takes his job as a paladin pretty seriously.
He also definitely looks up to Shiro and defers to him a lot; he's the first to go to his aid when he gets hurt and they seem to already know each other based on the conversation he had together after he rescued him. Their relationship would need to be explained.

Sokka's character arc is obviously realizing that he's the weakest link and coming to terms with that and what he can do.
Fatlus' character arc will be him having to get the others to trust Keith when we learn he's a halfie, since his current character arc shows a lack of being able to trust, which is what the point of the space bandits episode was.
Emiya's character arc will be becoming a HERO by making a hot deal with a space goddess so he can make infinite swords for Golion.

Ignoring for a moment that they don't all have a very good mentality compatible with stealthy behavior, or the risks of modifying a machines whose technology is beyond what they are aware of and whose full capabilities and energy usage requirements they do not know, there is the actual point of that statement which is simply that not all of Pidge's improvements are for the best. She can make mistakes or perform ill-advised alterations.
In other words they would be hesitant to let her tinker around with their own lions, but she's free to screw around with her lion as much as she wants. Presumably it won't complain, although it could if it wanted through the link they share. It is also possible that the lion is helping guild her with it's own improvements, but she lacks such a link to the other lions.

My personal theory is that he was a designer baby made to pilot the red lion by the Galrans, and they threw in some Altean DNA because why not. Something something lab explosion, he lands on earth as a baby and unknowingly changes into a human because of his latent Altean shapeshifting abilities.
