Someone explain the Retcon to me. How did it cause John to free himself from the timeline?

Everyone has a predestined path through the cosmos. Rose can scry parts of these paths, and the dream clouds can also show you bits and pieces. When John accepted the weapon's curse it was implied to sever his link to his timeline and let him exist as his own personal entity from that point on. He wouldn't have a determined future anymore, and he also couldn't go Marty McFly and change his own past to affect himself and change his own present.
John could've gone back and killed his past self as a baby and he still would've continued to exist, and paradox space would've had to just suck up and take the temporal paradox like the bitch he made it.

Caliborn says that after he used it once it changed in nature and he could never use it again, which is why he sealed it away deep within the Furthest Ring with the power of the Ring of Void. See: John being visited by his future self, the pre-retcon characters still existing as ghosts, Terezi remembering pre-retcon events. It's all just the same as when Dave goes back in time to undo a doomed timeline.

It's usually an attempt to avoid sameface (often they still have sameface - it's just a fuck ugly face) and drawing too anime-esque. But they end up with characters with bad designs and colour palettes. They add in extra 'flaws' to the designs until they look ridiculous, but ignore the fact that the original designs had their own flaws (at least this artist bothers to add in buck teeth).
You can draw characters to look different and even racially diverse without making them look diseased (dave looks like he's got an allergic reaction) or 20 years older than they should look.

Note that the picture is an example of a better diverse fanart (in terms of race and character design), since the characters look like teenagers and not 30 year old men, and don't have those nasty washed out skintones that a whole lot of tumblr fanart has.

The way Homestuck irony works is like this:
You start straight up mocking the thing.
Then you like it ironically.
But you get so into the ironic persona it wraps around to you actually liking it.
But it isn't the same as unironically liking the thing. It's a different sort of appreciation altogether. It isn't straight up ironic either. It exists somewhere between those concepts.
Eventually a fourth level is reached where you are aware of the fact that you are way too into irony. Then a fifth where you are aware of this, then a sixth, etc..

It's super hard to get jokes like that reading archival, but serially stuff like that sticks out like a sore thumb, it's everywhere.
Really this comic was always better the earlier you read it, there's a lot of nuance you end up missing otherwise, like most of the alchemy binges happening on Christmas.

The idea that Hussie could imply that Karkat acted like a completely different person until he was back on panel before devolving in to a "vintage Karkat shitfit" shows how weak of a writer he is.
Davepetasprite is probably the worst thing this comic has produced and just show's Hussie's contempt for what his fans want.

Wrong actually. It even has precedent, sort of: The Scratch. Meenah was actually instructed to blew he team up to leave ghost behind just before the Scratch happens, because otherwise they would be erased for good if they reesurecred back just before their Scratch happens. the Scratch has the same whitish energy as the retcon power.
What it means is that if a player a die in a timeline before it is retconned, you'll get to remain a ghost in Paradox Space, because Paradox space don't care about the rules. if you don't die in a timline that get retconned, you get overwrite. Such was the term of Sratch for Meenah, and it probably apply to retcon too. The Scratch is literally retcon that rplace main timeline with an other one, after all.

Except that would have resulted in a timleine where no shit was done at all. Retcon power doesn't not allow to "bring back" people to a pre-retcon timeline. it allow to modify the main timeline. John would have brought everyone to a new timeline with nothing having been done for all those time he had skipped. and the point was to not alter the alpha beyond the necessary to save everyone.

I don't see how it make no sense. Gamzee abused her guilt of killing Vriska and it has nothing to do with retcon.

We have seen their chat on the pad were they are both clearly in relationship, also, anyone who take Davekat seriously need to rmemeber the rebutal Tantrum given by Karkat when John suggested the ship was happening. Davekat isstill not confirmed.

Originally, the package didn't contain a sappy letter. The lack of this allowed John to be rused by Terezi and create Davesprite's timeline. Davesprite them traveled back and changed the birthday letter so it would be more meaningful and convince John to not jump ahead. By itself this might have worked except he got 800k stolen by the guys he hired to make the video game and no actual work was done. This lead to all sorts of stuff like would he have enough money to finish the game anyways, could he settle this in court and how much would he lose if he tried, would he have to change the way the final game looks in order to accommodate so on and so on. Starts posting what work on the comic he did have because he sort of needed to at this point. Gets through all that and decides to modify the original whole comic at once plan by leading the comic right up to the 'end' and posting climax all at once. Start terapause

In a way I'm sort of happy Tavros didn't get fused with another character, because at least he's become a Tavros-shaped abomination instead of getting DAOOTS'd and replaced with some weirdo that share his quirk and memories.

Not to mention his character arc can't be too similar to (Tavros)'s, but I really have no idea what Hussie is going to do with him.
