It would be exactly the same thing. There's no reason to think of consciousness as anything other than a particular set of cognitive abilities. A sense of identity, the ability to think about thoughts, the ability to develop mental tools and adapt them to new problems, etc. These are things that either you have or you don't, and once you have them, it doesn't matter -how- you have them even a little bit. Computers will achieve these things is ways that are very different from how we achieve them, but the result, which is consciousness, will be the same.

Do you realize that AI is probably the most dangerous existential risk humanity is going to have to deal with in the next few decades? Once we achieve general level intelligence (something about as smart as a human, able to reason and "understand", etc...) we're more than likely fucked.

Imagine we had a human level AI that could intelligently and efficiently process information 1000x faster than we could. Imagine someone told that AI to create an even smarter AI. Then imagine the smarter AI is told to make an even smarter AI. Now imagine this goes through a million iterations over the course of a year. The resulting super intelligence would basically be a god to us. Or rather, it would have the intelligence of a god. It would have the know how to accomplish anything a god could accomplish given the resources available to it.

Super intelligent AI like this still wouldn't be sentient, it would just be incredibly capable of accomplishing whatever tasks we gave it. We could use it to cure cancer or reverse aging. Humanity could be elevated to whole new levels. But it could just as easily wipe out the human race if someone tells it to, or if we give it confusing instructions. The classic example being some kind of a maximizer. Imagine someone puts this AI to work managing a paperclip factory, and gives it the task of "maximizing the paperclip output". The AI then proceeds to wipe out humanity, because A) humans still have the ability to shut it off, and if they do then the paperclip output won't be maximized and B) humans are made out of valuable atoms that it will need to turn into paperclips eventually once it uses up all the other resources.

People like you are dangerous to the human race, because you keep perpetuating the idea that computer programs are somehow human. They are literally machines that do everything they can to fulfill their prime directive, and nothing else.
