Yeah the Bartalottis are really good. My grandmother's still got one of the first ever metal ones. I used to play with it when I was a kid but she bought me a new electronic one because she didn't want me playing with such an old collector's item.

A finger box all though it may seem to be a relatively simple device, it is not on the contrary of being simple a finger box is more than a box with a hole in it, it is a massively complex device containing more than a thousand separate components per box, usually with nine boxes per set that makes over nine thousand separate components, but the device will work limitedly with just one box.

There aren't a lot of Bartalottis around anymore, honestly. Production halted in the 1930s, and up until then they'd been a family business. The nin-box sets were based fairly strongly on the original sets, and took quite some time to build.

It's a niche thing as a result, not well known enough to be sold individually for much except by unaware yard-salers. But if you can get a full set and find a proper collector you can make decent bank. I hear there's some guy in Switzerland who's been hoarding what few full sets he can find.

While I'd not deny the new Chinese designs, in paricular "Hun-Sun", are a bit unorthodox, they're moving with the time - they're using carbon fibre, revolutionary new production techniques.

Sure they might not have the classic charm, but then again nothing else does. You can't deny the modern Chinese designs are putting the fingerbox back into the hands of the common man. Economies of scale are magnificent.

here's what you need:

particle board: from the local hardware chain. it's incredibly cheap, like $2 will get you enough to make a dozen boxes.

boxcutter knife: necessary for cutting particle board.

steel ruler: necessary for cutting straight lines.

PVA wood glue: holds that shit together.

foam rubber: from any local swimming pool supplies place.

metal grommet: i got a pack of a hundred from a place that sells material and sewing supplies.

sandpaper: makes sure the edges are nice and smooth.

if you can't visualize a box's six sides, then perhaps amateur carpentry isn't for you.
