Michigander here. Raked up this little fella while doing some yard work. Pretty sure its a fox snake but im no speciliast. Anyway I think im going to keep him. Itt Opinions, species, care, snake general.
That snek looks poisonous.

Doubt it. I think there's maybe one poisonous smaller in michigan
Snake*
If you found it near water, its probably a Northern Water Snake (Nerodia sipedon).
South eastern here, assuming its a eastern fox
There is already a snake general >>>2097283

snake general usually just turns into an argument and regular people are ignored
>>2108952
any general does.
Keeping a wild snake is probably a bad idea. Just let him go and get your own

Best way to see if it's venomous is to check for fangs. If not, it looks like it could be a black rat snake or eastern milk snake. Could also be a corn. It's head pattern reminds me of my corn. Of course corns, rat snakes, milk snakes are close in the gene pool.
Doesn't look like a fox snake. Aren't fox snakes yellow/orange?

Post a close up pic of the side of its head. Post pic of belly pattern. Lighting is dark in this pic. It would be best to pic it up using sticks in case it's a Rattlesnake. Doubt it though, looking at the rail.

OP said this was a snake general, so I don't get your point. Also, I've always been answered in these thread before. More population=more chance to get an answer or to be argued with.
Got him checked out, turns out fox snakes are illegal to own, also turns out its a northern water snake!
Fellow Michigander here. If you don't let it go I will find you and I will kill you.
>>2109451
I could just kill him...

Why not keep a wild snake as a pet? Isn't that how all of our common pet snakes have started? Op could actually breed water snakes if he/she wanted to and create morphs. You know the palmetto corn? Beautiful snake. It's a fairly new morph and was caught wild. Same as the sunset ball python. These two wild caught snakes produced viable morphs with verified genes and each are worth thousands of dollars.

Sorry for the shit quality, here's a better pic. Same picture.
Don't keep a water in water like that. A normal temperate colubrid setup with a slightly larger water dish is where it's at. Good luck getting it to eat.

You're making a bunch of really dumb assumptions. Op can't breed watersnakes. Nobody would want the offspring anyway. Op can't tell a fox from a water or their ass from a hole in the ground, no new morph would be recognized.

On 4chan??? Surely, you jest.
As for keeping it, I recommend letting it go. Keep the wild in the wild. You can get a ball python or something for free any day of the week on Craig's List.

Also he swims around regularly, back and forth from basking to swimming, whether theres food in the water or not.
Annnnnndddd finally, thats just a quick setup i through together until i get to the store. I also asked about disifecting certain things and dnr said it wasnt necessary because hes a wild snake hes likely immune to most of what captive snakes inherit.
