Oh my gosh I just got back from my second day working at a local pet store and we fed this baby corn snake and it was seriously the most adorable thing ever. He was so chill and cute and he just sniffed and sucked down the thawed pinkies we put in his feeding container.

I've never had a snake before, but I have multiple other herps and I'm really heavily considering buying this tiny dude when I get paid.

Can you elaborate? I would like to know from your experience more than from google.
>>
>>2098023
I friend of mine keeps a pair

They are not THAT hard to keep.
But they need a really big enclosure and they are very messy, they smear their poop everywhere, a few snakes do this sometimes, but these suckers do it always.
His two have an enormous feeding response, so you have to watch your hand at feeding time.
The male also bites sometimes out of curiosity (?)

Absolutely stunning and active snakes tho, what I think is also neat is that they shed their tounges sometimes.

They are basically a smaller, non venomous king cobra
I'll get a pair too as soon as I have the space, because I fell in love with these beauties .
>>
>>2098377
I'm sorry? They shed their tongues?
>>
>>2098563
yes, every Drymarchon species does to my knowledge

But at least the eastern indigos do it certainly, the pair my friend has does, I saw the "Tounge-shed" stick to the a wall of the containers a few times myself.

bulbs for heat?
If yes, use the normal spot bulbs from your regular hardware store.
Find the right wattage and you should be fine

I always use the regular spor bulbs
They are exactly the same, are cheaper and usually have a longer lifespan

Just don´t use the extremely cheap ones if you want a long lifespan

They won't have UVAs though so be aware that your snake will notice the seasons more easily if he's close to a window.

I'm actually kind of sad summer is over because I liked seeing snakes out when I went bushwalking every now and then. Australian snakes are just so gorgeous, I just wish they weren't also so goddamn deadly.
Pic related, I got stuck in the house for a while when this guy was lying in front of my front door. I thought it waa a redbelly at first and wasn't super fussed (They're generally not deadly and eat other snakes), but then later found out it was a copperhead, which are extremely deadly instead. Still, gorgeous snake!

I will never understand this stuff. Nature has made many beautiful snakes that no morph can compare to. Most first reactions to morphs is "What is that?" .. there's cheaper snakes that even snake haters will say "Holy shit, that is beautiful" that aren't morphs.

but whatever.

You want pervy? When I first got my BP, I fed her pinkies the first few weeks just to make sure she was situated enough to eat. At first glance, it looked like she had constricted them properly and were dead. However, once she started swallowing, they'd suddenly wake up (guess they can hold their breath or stop their heart or something) and start thrashing. The whole way down.
>>
>>2100237
It's almost as if people have different opinions on what is beautiful.
>>
>>2100237
I posted the super pastel blabla and honestly I find all snakes beautiful to some extent. With that said I'd never pay a snake over 200 dollars but I can totally understand why snake breeders or people that have more money (than me) would pay thousands for such rare morphs.
>>
>>2100237
That is true. Often people get interested a particular species because it's commonly advertised as beginner friendly, but get caught up in morphs looking for specific appearance instead of considering other species that are usually equally easy to care for.

The lenght + width of the tAnk should be a bit longer than the snake itself. A bigger tank is usually always better. I dk much about this particular snake, but you have to use a prob for sexing or you can pop the "penis" out to see if it's a male. You can look it up further on the internet, but I'd recommend the vet should do it.

Call it Claude in the meantime. It can be used for males and females in french.
>>
Maybe one of you guys can help me out a bit while I wait for my vet appointment to roll around. I recently treated my woma python for a case of mites by bathing him and treating his enclosure with Provent-A-Mite. He seemed good for a few days until I noticed him scratching again and decided to repeat the treatment process. I'm seeing no signs of mites, but he's still rubbing against everything and has started quite literally slamming himself headfirst into his substrate throughout the day as if he's on speed or something. Seeing as he's always been very docile outside of feeding I went to pick him up to check on him today and he lost his absolute shit and bolted around the tank before puffing and hissing at me when I finally caught him him up. Is the PAM messing with his brain or something? I followed the instructed and stuck it in a ventilated area while I waited for it to dry, so what the hell? None of my other snakes have been showing any adverse signs after I treated their enclosures to be safe, just the woma. I would like to think that the rubbing is irritation from the mite bites, but the head slamming and erratic movement are cause for concern.
>>
>>2104064

>do not even compare the mantainance of an ETB with a BP

I had 11 adult adult ETBs at one point. I bred them. The difficulty spike is in the setup. Once the infrastructure is good to go, they don't need much help. Eat less than BPs, poop less than BPs, need less floor space than BPs. The machines handle the rest that is more difficult than BPs, except just paying attention to them to look for illness.

Point being, if you're committed to caring for a pet, have $1000 startup cash, and are over 18, you can easily handle an ETB. If you want a pet you can half-ass and ignore, a tropical snake of any kind is not for you. BP's are for lazy shits that want decoration and edge, and not something they have to actively care for. An ETB alone is already 1/10 the amount of work of a dog. How much easier do you want it?

Pic is one of mine.
>>
Do your snakes stalk you? Mine will watch whoever is in the room for hours, laying down his head on a branch or the substrate.

Sorry for the lat reply, I liked them ever since I saw a picture in the corner of a Florida Habitats book. I've never seen a wild one, but I know they're native north of me. They live in gopher tortoise holes which over time was extensively covered up for several reasons, trapping the sneks inside.

They are also the longest snake species in North America, and they aren't venomous, yet they aren't a constrictor.

So I've never had snakes(or reptiles) before, just cats and dogs. Although I've always been very fascinated by snakes and found them to be exceedingly beautiful. While I do want to get one, I'd naturally like to make sure I can afford it. I'm sorta a poorfag, so I only have like 500 dollars a month, but would that be enough?

I was pretty optimistic on this and it can easily go up a few hundred dollars, bit it's to show you that with motivation you can spend a lot loss.

Oh yeah, if you plan on getting real reptile bulbs, add 100$ for the year, because these things are cheap as fuck. You might also want to get a heat mat and rheostat, but some people say it's not necessary.
Ctrl F bulb in the thread for more options.
>>
>>2105208
>>2105257
Oh neat, that's way cheaper than I thought. I've been looking around and I've found some snakes being basically given away because the owner can't take care of them anymore. I'm a bit suspicious of that though, but I'll have to ponder it some more.
>>
>>2105276
Yeah you could look into that, but if you're willing to spend the extra buck for a juvenile snake from a good breeder, I'd say it's very nice to see them grow. Plus you won't need such a big enclosure for a year or so.

I had an old aquarium at my parent's which I used for my snake. It gave me more time to look up kijiji (similar to craigslist) thoroughly and that's how I found the 80$ 50 gallon.

So i'm a tad concerned about my little corn snake. The past four or five days he's been dull and misty eyed like he's going to shed, but he's been hiding at the back of his viv instead of his usual shedding spot inside the damp hide. The past few sheds where i've had him he's always just done it overnight on the first day or two, and today his eyes are back to normal but he hasn't shed. Should I be a bit worried about this or is he just doing it a little weirdly this time?
>>
>>2105768

Could be any number of things. My BCI has sometimes taken a week to shed after coming out of blue and then other times she's taken 24 hours. Keep an eye on him, but just let him do his thing and if he starts to look ill then take him to a vet.
>>
>>2105775
Alright, is there anything in particular I should keep an eye out for?
>>
>>2105776

The usual signs of disease; leakage from vent, nostrils, mouth, eyes; signs of mouth rot; weight loss, though this is something that happens in the long term not in a few days.
>>
>>2105696
Yes, Steve Sykes of geckosetc.com breeds them.

I haven't got a hoggy from him but i do have one of his leopard geckos. Great breeder. Do recommend.

Hilariously enough, I have a gecko from Steve too. Didn't know he bred hoggies.

Guess it's back to him.

Almost stepped on him last night. Seemed awfully cold, and didn't musk me or react at all when I picked it up.

So I'm giving some worms and see how he's doing. Will release tonight if he keeps eating like a pig.

Lined snake, pretty sure.

I've been feeding her these stupid little feeder fish, but I'm thinking about switching to frozen silversides
Any reccomendations?

Should I?

I don't like milk snakes. They barely look like an animal. Snakes have awesome faces but theirs has evolve to look like a butt.

Corns don't sit still when you hold them. They like to move around a lot.

You got the wrong snake for that. Corns never stop moving.

Looking to get a ball python, but I'm kind of worried about being bitten. How often do you guys get bitten? Do they latch on or just nick you?

Ball pythons are shitty first snakes

The only time I've ever come close to getting bitten was when I was handfeeding my 2 balls for a few months because I lost my tongs. They are generally super docile imo.

>Anyone here have experience with water snakes, or more specifically Nerodia Rhombifer?

I would most definitely not recommend them for a first time snake owner with no experience. Not because they're hard to keep alive, but because they can have major attitude issues.

I had one, along with a banded watersnake. They were named Bitey and Bastard, respectively.

Even after a couple of years, they never really took well to being handled. The musking was pretty bad too. I just gave up on it unless it was really necessary.

I fed them everything: frogs/toads I found outside, baitfish, salamanders, crawfish, etc. Very aggressive and voracious feeders.

And given that they like lots of wet food, their feces is similarly runny and messy.

Other than that, I liked them. Very active snakes, and I liked being able to have them on hand when trying to illustrate the difference between a watersnake and a cottonmouth/moccasin/copperhead.

In fact, I caught both at work after coworkers alerted me to the "copperheads" that had shown up with the recent rains.
>>
>>2106301
>>2106304

I would also recommend a king/corn snake. Ball pythons are probably the easiest exotics to own, but even for someone new, they can have their quirks. And they're nocturnal and low energy snakes that are fond of hiding.

I'm not a big fan of exotics in general. The only reason I have a couple of ball pythons is because an old guy my wife works with was giving them away, along with some other happy coincidences.

Generally how snappy are your hots? I'd never own them personally but from the few wild ones I've messed with they all seem to have bigger tempers compared to non venomous species except for water snakes the non venomous ones seem to be more of an asshole than cotton mouths.
>>
>>2106334
Depends on the actual animal honestly. Most of my Cobras are cbb and my breeders so they don't really have an attitude. I do have a mangrove viper that is a complete fucking asshole though
>>
>>2106316
I feel you. They are very fun coulbrids
So far she's eating very well off of guppies, and she's only musked me twice, but that was a few weeks ago when I first got her.
How big of a tank would you recommend? I was looking into a 75 gallon for when she gets bigger
>>
>>2106589

Mine did perfectly fine in 30-40 gallons. Contrary to popular belief, they really don't need that much water. A dish big enough to wallow around in is ideal. I also had a smaller "food dish" that I'd put their fish into.

I'd also suggest a variety of foods. Feeding them nothing but fish (especially one kind of fish) isn't very good for them.

Alright so I gave in and got the little corn snake. I named him Harvey. He actually ate two thawed pinkies when I got home, I gave them to him because he was actually trying to eat the rounded sides of the tote I put him in. He was also super thirsty, after he ate and drank up, he went to his warm side, burrowed down and curled up. He's a real sweetheart and I think he's just about the cutest damn thing I've ever seen.

Did you ever keep a wild snake for years? Is it true that they all have parasites to some extent and is it that bad to take care of?

I had a wild garter snake for 3 years before my mom found it when I was 14-17 and let it go while I was at school.

I caught it pretty young though in our garden it was always pretty chilled out and never struck at me, did get musked once or twice though in the first month.

How to convince roomy that snake is good? It's not like he's even gonna see the thing, and they don't smell or make noise. It will also be the one animal I won't be asking them to feed and take care of while I'm gone at work.

He owns the place. And we're good friends, so I'm not going to start a fight over an animal that I don't even have. It's just a goal sense I could be living here for another year or more.
>>
>>2108767
Why is he against it? Is he afraid?
>>
>>2108981
I'm not sure honestly. We haven't had a serious chat about it yet, it just kind of came up in conversation and he laughingly said 'oh, I don't think a snake is a go, might have to say no to that one'.

I'll probably wait till he's not so stressed from work and have an actual conversation with him.
