can i learn to only read japanese?
i'm not really interested in understanding it spoken or being able to speak (spoken may be useful for untranslated shows, but it's not a big deal to me), but i'd like to be able to read and by extension type. especially since any speaking exercise or whatever would involve making sound, which i don't like doing because i'm living with parents.
i spend all day on the computer so i just want to read and maybe at some stage type. (i'm assuming writing may also come into it, i have no need to write in english let alone japanese but if it helps for exercises etc i can always do that too.)
but my impression is that most guides are probably oriented to people who want a rounded understanding of the language instead of someone basically wanting to be deaf.
it's a stupid question i know.

DJT mostly focuses on reading / listening / massive amounts of input before doing output, so yeah, should be fine. Doing the other stuff just helps strengthen your knowledge. Should probably at least echo when doing vocab alone or something so your gaijin pronunciation isn't as bad when you do eventually want to start speaking.

Is there a decent guide to setting up IMEs? I just learned that alt+shift switches the languages and alt+Caps Lock switches input modes but when I looked at the properties it feels like I'm learning runes all over again

Yes, the purest reason to use SRS flashcards is to not forget things you already learned, and they're the very least time consuming thing for doing so.

Grammar now. Immediately. You can do radicals if you want, they don't take long. Kanji study is something you have to seriously consider for yourself because it can go either way. Eventually you want to start memorizing words and reading (at the same time). You should know the very most common 50-100 words as a result of taking your grammar guide.

I feel pretty lucky. In 8th grade those of us who didn't pay money for a field trip were gathered into one classroom and had to wait the whole day. The supervising teacher handed out a worksheet on passive voice and to this day that remains my only formal education on passive structures in language. Feels good to know missing out on a field trip benefited me years later.

So in english grammar there's this concept called the subject
You might know about it, it's the noun that's responsible for having the verb attached to it
"The car turns on"
The car is the subject and it's directly experiencing the action "turn on"
With a transitive verb the subject performs an action on something else called the "direct object"
"The engine makes noise"
The engine is the subject, but it's performing the complicated action "make noise". In "make noise", "noise" is the direct object of "make".
Passive happens when what is normally the direct object is placed in the position of subject. English uses adjectival nouns, "be", and optionally "by" to form the passive.
"The food was eaten"
The food is the subject and "eaten" is the passive verb.

Need some help with tricky (to me) grammar, from the prologue to the first LOGH novel. The context is historical exposition, starting with a description of a kind of golden age and moving on to describe its flaws.

It's not a priority to spend his time now stressing over his katakana if he doesn't get it, he should go over it and if he forgets along the way, he shouldn't worry to much about going back to it because it'll come naturally as he progresses his grammar, whereas the inverse is not true.

There is not a scenario where someone saves enough time by skipping katakana that their grammar improves a noticeable amount.
Furthermore, at that point grammar would be even less of an issue than the simple fact that they won't know any words.
Furthermore x 2, at that level it will be extremely difficult to understand what other people are saying so a conversation in the first place is out of the question.

Katakana and grammar are not of equal importance. I know you're just trying to say katakana is also important, but it's not necessary to the extent everything else is.

Again, again, the time saved by skipping katakana isn't significant by any measure. They are of equal import precisely because Katakana takes a fraction of the time that grammar does. Obviously if there's a choice between fluency in grammar and knowing katakana, the former is preferably because it's much loftier and takes more time, but that's not the situation at all.
Furthermore katakana comes in strings of words. It makes no sense to read VNs and then everytime a katakana word comes up to use realkana to look up all 5-6 katakana because you don't know them. Learning them all before hand is far more logical and efficient. And not nearly as time consuming!

I wouldn't call Anki a game. It's merely a tool, or a framework. Even if you were to call SRS-based learning a game, Anki would merely be a tool to help you play. Like a chess application where you manually move pieces and designate them as captured.
Memrise would be a better example of a game - you get scored, you get incentives based on the score and the application actually enforces the rules on your actions. But unlike a dumb kana memorization game, a game like Memrise actually adapts to your learning and does not bombard you with dozens of kana you already know.

There's something more than semantics here.
Anki is an application with no gamification but a very good method. It makes efficient use of your time, without doing much to keep you motivated.
Those kana recognition games and their friends may have good gamification, but the method sucks. You might be tempted to keep at them for a long time, but it would be a waste.
The point being, whether or not you require gamification is up to you, but you shouldn't compromise on method. So if you can't hack it out on Anki, at least get on Memrise or something similar to make better progress.

Does anyone use a monolingual anki deck? I've been considering mining words using sanseido to get used to reading the definition and recognizing the word from there.

If anyone's interested I can upload the tsv. It's every word in the entire LOGH series that appears between 2 and 100 times (i.e. not once and not 101+ times) for a total of 15,000 cards. I'm using it as "filler" for when I don't have enough mined words but still want to progress with vocabulary. This has been a real problem since its hard to maintain 40 words per day as an intermediate unless one reads a good deal of non-compelling material (in my case anyway). I didn't want to use a frequency list of all words because it's likely I'll know the most frequent words anyway and I'd like to target my biggest weak point by far, sci-fi.

I don't know who that is but all translations from Japanese to English are slight rewrites. An author may prefer an English version of his work because English can flow better than Japanese but if you want to read an English book there are already thousands to choose from on project guthenburg

I'll explain in detail for anyone curious. All simple stuff but hey explanations are good.
1) Run through a file containing Japanese text with the Japanese Text Analysis Tool. It outputs a plaintext file with frequency data for every unique word which appeared in the novel.
2) Use Notepad++'s "replace all" feature (ctrl H or find in menu) to remove numbers individually. this neatly gets rid of the frequency data (which fucks up Epwing 2 Anki) but preserves the unique words (or do >>139495513 if you're smart). Then change the encoding to Shift JIS (also in menu) so that Epwing 2 Anki can interpret it. Normal notepad can't change encoding this easily as far as I know.
3) Go through Epwing 2 Anki, choosing options as you like. Select the text file you just fiddled with in the final options.
4) Create a new deck and be sure to change the card type to match the fields you included in the epwing 2 anki process. Import the .tsv file Epwing produced and be sure to check allow HTML. Done!

I can read stuff like Ayakashibito, Semiramisu, just about any nukige/moege, etc etc without any problems. So I've been doing the core 6k/2k on anki and the pronunciation of the speakers has sort of been confusing me. They almost always seems to pronounce g kana with a ng sound, like 中学 gets pronounced something like chuungaku. It also seems to happen with ん sometimes even when the following consonant isn't k or g. As far as I can remember I've only very rarely heard this pronunciation from other Japanese speakers. It's a license that allows you to read native material. With N5 you can read little stories made for children like 装甲悪鬼村正. With N1 you get access to all Classical Japanese Literature like 化物語 and are able to read it basically.

I'm trying to have it both ways, alternating between LOGH and casual manga. The LOGH words go to a LOGH deck, and the manga words go to a general deck.
When one deck or the other runs out of new cards, it's a sign that I've been neglecting it and I start building it up with new material. This system balances itself out.
If you're seeking a balance more in favor of normal Japanese, you can achieve it by tweaking the new card rates of both decks, so that normal deck consumes more new cards each day, and thus requires more attention.
