When you know what pain is, and when you have to make a choice, you learn that it is a decision. People think it's a fairytale thing, love and happiness, but you have to work hard. And then - you feel it deeply.

Ah okay. He said it's the katakan for hu which confused me..

It uses mnemonics + drag n drop to teach you, which helped me learn hiragana quick. I like it. I'm almost done with kana then I'm gonna move on from the site anyways

The pronunciation is different from word to word so you'll inevitably look like a fool anyway

It is but the F sound isn't the same as the English F sound. It's a lot softer and kinda like H but sounds like F.

How do I determine whether the らりるれろ sounds are supposed to make something closer to an R or closer to an L? I've noticed that it's more like an L when it's at the beginning of a word.
>>
>>139426266
Just listen to Japanese.
If you've watched enough animu you should know what らりるれろ sounds like so just imitate that.
>>
On Anki, if I import a card with the same front but changes in the back, I thought it would change it. Instead, it seems like it's just not adding them. What can I do to change that?
>>
Whoever gets a Japanese name will be able to learn Japanese, everyone else won't.
>>
>>139426476
I know what it sounds like and my native language has a pretty similar R sound. Just wondering if there is a pattern. It's certainly not one sound that's between L and R, it changes depending on the word.

Your handwriting is fine, don't listen to faggy edgelords on /a/ who couldn't do it themselves anyway
>>
>>139427511
My hand was pretty sore by the last お, so they suffered pretty hard. I'd done 20 each of あいうえ and their katakana equivalents (which I can't figure out how to type on my phone) by then.

So if my earlier ones were good, I'm happy.

My き is coming out worst of all...
>>
>>139427417
Then do it like the nip children do it; get a sheet meant just for writing individual kana.
You know, those squares that are broken into 4 smaller ones to give you a sense o positioning.
>>
>>139427705
>My き is coming out worst of all...
Are you writing your き the same way it shows up in these posts or like the one here >>139427648 ? It`s easier to do it like in that guy`s pic.

By the way, you`re in for one hell of a ride if you intend to write the kanji as well.
>>
>>139427743
What I really need is one that starts out with tracing. I'll have to find/print one like that later.

I think the difficulty of writing kanji is overestimated. You'll get good at it pretty fast.
>>139427969
It's harder to write き like in the font, better switch now so you don't have to change your habits later on.

Kanji seems like this intimidating mountain to beginners, but it's really not all that hard once you get into it. There is only so many different strokes + radicals, just arranged in different ways.

After you're done it's like "the fuck, I thought kanji was supposed to be the hard part" and you realize how foolish you actually were.

Just do things consistently and you'll be fine.

20~50 for most depending on how much time you have. Some do really high numbers for short periods (100+). Breaking the learning into chunks of 10~20 at a time generally helps.

Expect the number of new cards added daily to multiply by 10 in terms of reviews after 2~3 weeks.

Also, remember that keeping up your daily reviews is MORE IMPORTANT than learning x number of cards a day. If you're getting backlogged and struggling to make it through all your reviews, take a day or two off of new cards to keep things under control.
>>
>>139428588
The hard part is being consistent with the size of your hand written kanji. Writing 子 and 難 can be tricky if you want them to occupy roughly the same amount of space.

I'm not sure about normal conversational Japanese but at least in songs it seems like they just use whatever sound they think fits the most. I think there's at least some variation from person to person on the same word too.

It helps to either use the specialized paper for learning kanji (grid divided into 4 smaller squares) or just plain larger graph paper.

I completed memorization of kana today!

Is there any proper order to learn now, or do I just do vocab / grammar / kanji side by side? I've got the core2k/6k anki set up as well as Tae Kim bookmarked. Anything else?
>>
>>139430392

It depends on how good do you want to be.
If you just want to be good enough to read porn, studying via vocab is more efficient.
If you want to truly master the language, studying the kanji individually is better. The road is steep though.
>>
>>139430392
Focus more on kanji for a bit if you find that vocab is becoming too difficult.

Try to get through basic grammar faster rather than slower as well, so you can start reading interesting stuff (likely yotsuba& at first) rather than just grind vocab forever.
>>
>>139430392

Remove the review limit on anki, ignore anon's altered anki statistics, set up a text hooker for VNs and start reading VNs or manga as soon as you want

>>
>>139431122
For info on kanji check the guide under
Learning Japanese > Benefits & Drawbacks of Learning Kanji
It's up to you if you want to focus on kanji or not, but it's generally helpful if you're confusing similar looking ones or having trouble learning new vocab.

>>139431262
Some people change the Steps (in minutes) to 1 1 10 20 or 1 1 10 30
This just means that anki will show you new cards additional times, the repetition helps some with initial learning of vocab.
>>
>>139430392
Do vocab and grammar side by side, but prioritise grammar. Fuck studying kanji individually.
>>

What LNs are you looking forward to? Just curious.

Are LNs generally harder than VNs? Or are they the same? I'm thinking VN might be a bit easier with voices and all.

I played Demons Souls in Japanese. Wasn't particularly worth it. Localized dialogue was actually superior to the original dialogue.

I did play DS1 ~2 years ago because DS2 was then coming out soon. I thought it was a fucking masterpiece, easily one of the best games ever made. Then DS2 was very disappointing. I look forward to DS3 based on your impressions of it, although I may need to upgrade my computer first.

I listen to music in japanese, fap to works written in japanese, read japanese comics, do japanese flashcards every day and unconsciously review phrases in my head. On top of that I read something that's above my level for at least an hour a day. I don't think playing one game in english will make me 'fail' to learn japanese, especially when some might even consider me to have already passed the point of being able to 'fail' learning Japanese.

Nobody above intermediate is going to spend a significant amount of their time in this shithole. You can tell by the recent threads. When anyone posts a question that's even remotely hard, it gets little to no replies. It used to be that imouto would give an answer to these questions but you fuckfaces have chased him off too.

And now look at this thread. Someone posts some hiragana or some shit and everyone fucking replies to it because that's the only Japanese they know. If that doesn't tell you how shit this general has become, I don't know what does.

The only reason why I'm still here is because I love eating shit, but I don't see myself staying any just to be lectured on my learning methods by some self-important shitter who's just started his Japanese course.

I was thinking about why it was hard for me to get into watching anime/tv as practice and it finally hit me that I was hesitant to start reading as well until I realized that there's no need to worry about ruining/misunderstanding dumb nukige. Similarly, there's no need to worry about misunderstanding dumb harem anime! So, has anyone watched some genuinely bad harem anime lately that would be good practice (as opposed to good ones like Inou Battle and Bakemono)? All I can think of is something like Highschool DxD that I read the LN for.

>望むことは、即ち得ることだった。- in this context, does this mean "what was desired, was acquired"?

>唯一興奮することは、支配域を奪うことだが、何世代も前に、すべての力は完全に拮抗していた。何の変化もない日常というやつだ - I understand from the first part of this sentence that "the only thing that excited (us) was taking (someone else's) territory" but what does
"何世代も前に、すべての力は完全に拮抗していた。"? Countless generations before (we) perfectly rivaled power?

Yeah, 拮抗 can be "力に優劣がなく互いに張り合うこと" which fits this idea of "perfect rivalry" well, so I agree that it's probably something like "(Even) countless generations ago, all (our) power was perfectly balanced in opposition."

(If you meant "It was countless generations before our power became perfectly balanced," that would be すべての力が完全に拮抗してきたまでは何世代も経った or something, I think)

If you know your kanji at all, that's really not true. Besides whether you do core or mine the amount of time you spend studying new words doesn't change at all since you'll have to learn those words no matter what the source.

At least mined words are more likely to be relevant to the kind of material you prefer to read.

Very easy if you've got a texthooker and the necessary mindset not to mindlessly keep using it when you don't know a kanji right away. The grammar is basic as fuck once you get used to the ちょ可愛い!!! crap.

tfw I'm considering Japanese classes because all attempts to teach myself have failed
>>
>>139463125
If you can't learn by yourself, you can't learn in class, because even classes depend on self-study on the side. Sorry, Phil.
>>
>>139463125
The only way you can fail is if you lack the discipline to be consistent with your studies, which will be an issue in a class as well to an extent. Setting that aside, classes are slow enough that even if you stopped doing anki and just read and supplemented it with some anime, you'd still be going at a much much faster pace than a class would take you as long as you're doing it every day / doing enough of it.
>>
>>139463125
Just watch anime for a few years and you will learn Japanese
>>
>>139463125
All a class can do is give you a tae kim's worth of grammar material and some pointless talking practice, which is fuck all.
The only kind of class study that works is language schools in Japan, which have you learning full time for 5 days a week, and only rich kids can afford that luxury.

>Protip

Once you get around N3+ level, you should stop stressing about every little grammar point you don't know or recognize. If you understand what the sentence is about and all of the words (through memory of context), you should just move on.

Even in English we let words and grammar points "roll off" when we don't understand them (you literally do this everyday). Just keep going, and if its a common enough grammar point, that you can't understand from context THEN look it up.

>Bottom line
If you have a question that is non-beginner, you should have at least 3 examples of that pattern to warrant an answer that is not できない

I don't understand why anyone would want to stay in texthooker hell forever.

I remember my earliest reading days. If I were to describe them, I'd say imagine going on a camping trip and getting drunk off your ass to the point where you pass out. You wake up alone in the middle of the foggy forest about three hours later with a map, a compass, a mission to reach civilization, a massive fucking headache, and the miserable leftovers of your drunkenness. You are now navigating the foggy forest with the world's worst hangover. It's so bad that you can never get a good grasp on your surroundings.

Every bit of Japanese that you learn clears the fog and cures more of the hangover. Eventually, you're left with a nice, casual, relaxing stroll through the forest.

Why would you want to brag about getting used to being disoriented in the foggy forest with a hangover when the above option exists? If you're taking camping trips every week, it would be less work in the long run to just learn the skills necessary to navigate the forest of Japanese media.

Or just read off the VN and only use the texthooker to look up words when you would otherwise be looking them up in a dictionary anyways. That's why the Firefox+Rikai+ITHVNR+Furigana/Clipboard Inserter combo is good. No grammar parsing and furigana to hold your hand, just plain text and a dictionary. Any issues created beyond that compared to not using a texthooker is just a lack of willpower.

Texthookers are only a problem when you relying on them too much.
>>
>>139465994

I'm not trying to argue that texthookers aren't useful learning tools.

Go to EOP VN threads.

Some people in those brag about using texthooker being a skill, and how good they are at it. Yet, they never just take the extra step and use it to learn Japanese.
>>
>>139466121
Oh, alright, given the thread we're in I thought you were implying using a texthooker is inherently a bad thing for learning or something dumb like that or acting like everyone who uses a texthooker has all of the parsing/translating shit on rather than just using it as a dictionary.

Yeah, I don't really get why EOPs machine translate everything and are satisfied with it. If they spent half that time studying they'd probably be able to actually read that stuff in Japanese, but that requires actual effort so I guess that's unreasonable to expect from them.

>>139465747

>>
>>139466121
So what you really have an issue with is machine translators and parsers, not text hookers.
>>
>>139467300
And it really makes no sense to hate parsers, all they do is make looking up words quicker. Rikai itself has its own parser, it's just slightly more of a pain since you have to mouse over the start of the word specifically for it to work. As long as you don't have the bright coloured parser like Chiitrans and are just reading off it instead of the VN, there's really nothing wrong with them.
>>
>>139467300
i thought he hated the gaijins who read endlessly deep and well written ero games machine translated and then go to sleep later 100% content with their life while in the meantime hes stuck lamenting his existence while pressing the again button on anki

>An all-star tag-team of Japan's greatest scholars, scientists, magicians, and the odd novelist or three square off against Imperial Japanese Army officer/evil wizard Yasunori Katō as he seeks repeatedly to destroy Tokyo, the titular Imperial Capital, and lay to rest the vengeful spirit of 10th century warlord Taira no Masakado. Their epic combat spans 90 years of fictionalized history over 12 volumes, and pulls in cameo appearances from pretty much everyone you've heard of (and more you probably haven't) from a 20th century Japanese history class. The movie adaptation, in its day one of the most expensive Japanese movies put to film, is a lickety-split adaptation of the first several volumes and a minor schlock tokusatsu masterpiece in its own right; its version of Katō is the primary inspiration for M. Bison from Street Fighter. Extremely nerdy and highly recommended.

Holy shit
