You must respect people and work hard to be in shape. And I used to train very hard. When the others players went to the beach after training, I was there kicking the ball.

TV anywhere is mainly trash aimed at the lowest common denominator and legit humour isn't allowed to be broadcast. It's for the lowest common denominator. The lowest.

Would there be any value in having a database of plaintext files copied down from the text in various manga? (No english translations, just the japanese text)

I was thinking I'd like something like that so I could follow along with it reading the manga in rikaichan.

Just wondering because I might start reading boku no hero academia and thinking about saving all the text or if I shouldn't bother

Doesn't look like it could hurt and there aren't many cards and if they are accurate, why not? Nothing to really lose and there is something to gain. Go for it. It will take less than a week to go through and by then you should have a feeling of whether or not you feel like further reviewing.

>>139117847
>i think mainstream is funny/cool a lot of the time
That is fortunate as there is a lot of it. Consider yourself blessed, man.

Someone went out of there way to spam report the mega accounts linked and a bunch of stuff was removed.

No, it was his own uploads.
>>
>>139117968
i do but shes not around right now
>>
>>139118039
No it wasn't, at least not all of it. I have two of the mega accounts from the older split of accounts and received a bunch of obviously fake DMCA threads from throw away email addressed around 48 hours before getting email from mega explaining that my account was being looked into for fraudulent activity and when I went to log it, it kept screwing up, I had to reset my password and after logging in with the new password, my folders with a collection of light novels were all gone and the account says I have 50GB worth of date left on the cloud.
There is no fucking way I'm going to be using that account anymore.
>>
>read Tae Kim

Shit. I wanted to start core at the same time. I guess it wasn't entirely pointless, learning radicals seems to help and there aren't even that many anyway.

Not really, it scared the shit out of me.
Fortunately everything I have uploaded as been through a tunnelling service. The other account is still up, which has like 10GB of light novel scans.
I've sent an email to the anon who gave me the mega account in the first place, no response.

>>139118267
They both have a stack of different topic boards- try both.
>>
>>139118392
>I've sent an email to the anon who gave me the mega account in the first place, no response.
The guy who distributed those accounts from the "original owner" is the original CoR guy who freaked out in the first place, so I hear. He's trying to destroy it again.
>>
>>139118170

>my uploads are still up and active

Easily replaced, but still. Guess Mega just went after the larger accounts.
>>
Any good podcasts for listening comprehension? There's an abundance on iTunes.
>>

Maybe but I doubt it. Anyway, time will tell.
>>139118503

Have you looked into the Jpod101 collection in the CoR? For listening comprehension lessons it is pretty much generic but all round decent.

for me, sometimes i just google shit i'm interested in and look around a bit. sometimes i end up at a website or blog about something interesting and i try to read that. in the end it's pretty much just up to you to find what you like though. at least finding a manga you like seriously shouldn't be hard though. do you just not like reading at all or something?

psp, ps3, ps4.
ps vita too, however...
because of how the system works, it's a damn pain in the ass to switch between two different-region accounts.
if i remember correctly, it's locked to the actual system, not even the memory card, and the only way to change it is to format the system and redo the initial setup. therefore if you don't want to lose your data, you have to have a spare empty memory card to put in before formatting. plus doing the setup takes a while and even includes something like a 3 minute unskippable video. i just gave up on switching back and forth because it was so annoying to do, especially compared to ps3 and ps4 where it's just a couple button presses.
>>
>>139120147
>it's locked to the actual system, not even the memory card
Nah, now you can swap cards around to play using different accounts.
But you shouldn't be using anything but the Japanese one anyway.
>>
>>139119902
No wonder the thread was so fast
And no, the thread devolved into shitposting

>>139120188

>>
>>139120147
>. therefore if you don't want to lose your data, you have to have a spare empty memory card to put in before formatting
You can back up your data to your PC, so you don't need a second memory card. Having a second memory card is less troublesome though.
If you have ps+ you actually get cloudsave think?
Also you can always just import japanese games physically, you just wont be able to buy DLC
>>
>>139119902
Your posts didn't improve the thread. You flooded the thread with questions that were not a part of the conversation. I realize you think you were unnoticed, but I think it was clear that something strange was happening and that's why people started chasing ghosts. Conversations need to be organic; there can't just be people spamming isolated questions all the time.

>>
>>139119274
I like reading english novels, so I assume I'd like LNs or Japanese novels, but they are pretty difficult. I don't know why but I always got bored and lost interest with manga and VNs. I don't think I've ever gotten past 2 volumes of any one manga.

I like to talk to people and watch anime, both of which aren't really going to help my reading. Maybe I'll try another LN
>>
>>139119792

hmm. i might suggest to look for short-story kinds of manga. i really don't know many at all to be honest, but you know, little self-contained stuff like most of junji ito's.
since those kinds are really short, it would perhaps feel like less of an investment to slowly read through and probably won't become as boring or tiresome. have you tried reading stuff like that?

Does the "new cards per day" actually give you new words, or does that include the review? It doesn't seem like I'm actually getting the number of new cards that I put in.
>>
>>139121961
It gives you new cards, yes.

I assume the どこをどう is kind of like a where and how but why the を? I feel like I'm missing something.
>>
>>139122419
well i'm sure it's normal to an extent, but i've never had it happen on this level.
i'd continually forget the same card within 10 seconds like 5 times in a row. near the end it was cycling through like 5 cards every one of which i'd forget each time it came around. that's definitely an exaggeration but it sort of felt like that. my mind just felt comparatively hella blank during my reps today.
>>
Do you guys mine vocab into its own deck? I just push the Core cards to the top (except when the word isn't on the deck for whatever reason).

I have a Japanese main deck and the Core and mined vocab subdecks under that. This is because I needed to be able to have different options for each deck such as different new cards per day when I was still doing core.

it pretty much is in this case. を makes it basically exactly like saying "where" in english and indicates that you ran somewhere while keeping it as vague as simply saying "where"

it kind of is because you sound kinda awkwardly distant saying みたい
>>
>>139123478
i've been paranoid too, recently. in certain contexts it sometimes becomes legitimately difficult to tell shitposts from non-shitposts

i find certain parallels between english and japanese kind of interesting, many of them are metaphors that i just wouldn't imagine being pretty so similar in japanese.
a similar thing i was wondering about
おかしい means both humorous and strange. we can say "funny" in english in the same way, meaning either funny "ha-ha" or funny like "this soup tastes funny..."
but does the japanese word prefer one meaning or have different sort of connotations from its english parallel? it's a pretty basic word but i'm inexperienced in seeing it in the wild

I'd say forget about the ones with 御 in front as long as you know it's just the kanji for the honorific お or ご that comes in front of some words (like ご飯 can also be written 御飯)

so then it's just down to お腹 or お中, and I'm sure お腹 is more common. I've never seen the other one used as stomach before, and rikai usually puts the most common one at the top.

The thing is anon, you have no idea which posts they were and you would have never anything if I didn't post that.

What you don't know is that I've been doing this since Feb, on and off and almost every thread I didn't run this little experiment, they had a couple of arguments that took up 100s of posts. It was somewhat shockly how predictably the threads would be reduced to huge spanning off topic arguments on the days I refrained from posting. It is certainly something to think about, even if you may not want to accept it.

So, what I've learned in 1.5 months as a beginner:
Pre-WW2 kana.
Modern kana.
25 simplified Kanji.
My question is if I should continue with the simplified characters or move on to the traditional ones? I don't really want to read any 1000 year old book at this point, so would it be wiser to go with simplified?

>>139126643
I realize these are just examples, but japanese doesn't work on a simplified-traditional system like chinese. Both 龍 and 竜 are in use and have slightly different meanings, they aren't different versions of each other. And 礻 isn't actually a kanji.
>>
>>139126643
Are they shortened so you can fit more of them on a single bone?
>>
>>139126643
Nah man. Learn grammar, kanji and vocab at the same time.
>>
>>139126643
Huh, well again you shouldn't separate kanji into two categories. For each kanji, there is only one form that you should normally use and thus need to learn. Like you should know 示, but 礻 is useless, it it never used as a kanji, it's just a radical. And 龍 is very rarely used, you only need 竜 until you get to expert level.

By the way I would personally recommend studying grammar and general language instead of just focusing kanji exclusively for so long. Especially since you don't really seem to understand what kanji you even need or not.
>>
>>139126691

It's bait.
>>
>>139126931
But even if I understand the grammar, if I don't know the Kanji used it won't make any sense. Yeah, maybe with children's work in hiragana/katana it might work, but I want to read deeper stuff than that. I don't mean that as an insult to Japanese culture, just saying that I don't like reading things aimed at kids.
>>
>>139126998
did you start learning English with Shakespeare?
>>
>>139126853
>Why do I need grammar if I can't read? I really can't quite understand this concept of focusing on grammar without learning the alphabet.

You encounter a sentence, and if it contains any words you don't know, you just look it up, and that's how you learn new words. Then when you know all the words in the sentence, you apply the grammar and understand the meaning. Rinse and repeat.

I kind of understand where you are coming from, but you cannot apply the logic of english to japanese. You don't need to learn the entire collection of kanji before you start reading. In fact it is impossible. There is not a single person in the world that knows all the kanji there is. Even just learning the jouyou kanji is a huge undertaking, much less in addition to the obscure ones you mention. Expecting to master that before even learning any of the actual language like grammar and words, is like expecting to become a master of chess without ever playing a match. You learn the language by trying to reading and understand stuff you don't know, just like you learn chess by playing matches, even if you are sure to lose in the beginning.
>>
>>139127019
No, I didn't learn English.

>>139127106

I think what he means is that it would be more efficient to learn grammar and start reading CUMPELLING CONTENT because you can learn more Kanjis^TM per sentence and at the same time get a feel for the language and how it works.
>>
>>139127106
>I think I can devote a year just to learning as many Kanji as I can
I'm going through a similar path, but I'm learning just 2000 to begin studying grammar, because I want to use what I'm learning before I start forgetting it.

I'm currently at 1900 words, 5 days to go, dokidoki suru.
>>
>>139127106
Just treat kanji like words rather than letters, because that's a more fitting comparison.

If you were learning english, would you first memorize the entire dictionary before you started actually reading stuff? Of course not. No way in hell you would be able to memorize the entire dictionary without reading stuff, because it is precisely by reading stuff you are able to memorize the dictionary. Except if you are savant maybe. And even if you somehow were able to, it would be EXTREMELY inefficient and frankly ridiculous.

>With full knowledge of Kanji it would be much easier to learn the grammar, wouldn't it?
No, kanji has nothing to do with grammar.
>I think I can devote a year just to learning as many Kanji as I can and then starting grammar/vocab. Is it that bad of an idea?
Yes, that is a bad idea.
After you do that you'll realize that you learned absolutely nothing worthwhile because learning kanji completely separately is completely pointless when you don't know anything about vocab or grammar.

Long term.
>>
>>139127687
Because Kanji are NOT the alphabet. Kana are. Kanji are more of vocab than they are an alphabet.
>>
>>139127658
Well I'm already doing that but if I have to wait multiple days to review them it takes me ages to consistently remember them I feel like. Sure I can just concentrate more while first learning them and I'm doing that to the best of my ability, but wouldn't brute forcing be more efficient?
>>
>>139127742
you would be right, but only if we were all having a japanese exam in two weeks.

long term retention only happens by repetition and this doesnt men "20 times a day" but "20 times over the course of three months".

its a lot of work, yeah, but no one said this was going to be easy. you can try to "brute-force" 300 kanjis today, but you will have forgotten them all in a month.

Hanahira. Flyable Hearts. Dies Irae.
>>
>>139131962
Instead, remember it as that one complex kanji with that particular radical
>>
>>139132097
Just do Hanahira or Flyable Heart. Compelling content is important, but the first thing you're going to read you're most likely going to ruin and misunderstand enough that if it has anything resembling a plot you're not going to be able to follow it anyways. Plus Flyable Heart's is actually good when you get to the routes, so the common route is prefect as a throwaway to get used to reading.

After your first VN (or after the common route in the case of Flyable Heart) is when the fun starts, unless you have shit enough taste to unironically love the common route or Hanahira.

>魑魅魍魎

It's great that you don't have to learn any of the kanji for this and can just remember the whole thing as an easy chunk
>>
>>139131962
That is an useful technique for learning vocabulary when there is another kanji.

Lots of formerly complex kanji became pretty elementary after I learned new stuff, so when I come across it again, I finally understand it.

For instance, 授業 (jugyou) was totally alien to me, and it showed up very early. I just shrugged and accepted it as "that complex word that sounds like Yu-gi-oh!" to get it past the reviews.

But a month later I learned lots of _業 words. The "gyou" ending was thus memorized.

A month later, 授業 shows up for review. I had forgot about it being a "complex kanji" word, but I immediately recognized the second kanji. "Hey, that first kanji isn't any of the _業 words I've learned...".
So I couldn't get this review right, but the answer "jugyou" was now totally easy to remember.

It's been another month later and I've learned a couple words using 授, which also helps.

Anybody got any tips for listening practice?
I've been listening to radio on and off for about 2 years and I still have trouble picking up words or particles whilst still following along with the sentences.
e.g.
>I know that word, what was it?
>3-4 words go by
>Got it
>Missed too much
>Lose concentration because I don't know the context or which part they're talking about
>>
>>139134814
Rewind, listen to it again, and again, then play it normal until you get to more words you are unsure of, then rewind etc. Repetition is best. Of course that won't work with live radio.
>>

I started watching drama of anime/manga I've read. More visual help than anime, already know the plot, and it's crap enough that I don't really mind missing anything.

There are downsides to anki too.
In my opinion the difference is not important enough for you to be losing sleep over it when you're just starting to learn vocab.
I think trying to get perfect anki scores is the same error people make who spend way too much time in grammar books trying to perfect their encyclopedic knowledge.

起 is お in all those examples, so even if you mix them up now who cares? The goal is to get to the point where you can read without a dictionary as fast as possible. Then you'll have all the context you need to separate them.

It's easy m8. Take なる for example. We conjugate it to its masu-stem: なり. Then we attach て: なりて. Then we go through a few centuries worth of phonetic change: なって. Easy!

Labeling added to example sentences and images of the notes/related expressions sections were added to the bottom of the cards. And some controversial styling and two card layouts.

What do the Japanese call visual novles? As in, for us, both all ages games and 18+ are VNs, but doesn't eroge only apply to 18+ games? Is there a wider category that encompasses both or is the eroge label used with that meaning regardless of whether h-scenes are present?
>>
>>139153573
They don't call anything "visual novels"

ADV/adventure game would be the more general term for visual novels. If it is something like Rance or Kamidori that has a lot of gameplay, they just call it by the genre of game (SLG)
>>
>>139153710
Yeah, I know they don't, the question was what do they call the things we call visual novels.
But thank you for answering So they generally just call it ADV then? I actually thought that stood for the type of text display as per the vndb tag's definition.

Supposedly the ideal is getting about 80% overall and 90%+ on your mature cards. If you're getting low retention rates you might want to do fewer new cards a day, or be more lenient about hitting hard over again. But any at any retention rate you're still learning something.

>or be more lenient about hitting hard over again

I often feel that I do well, remembering cards fairly often, but then near the end when I'm on the last like 20 cards for the day I can't remember shit and I end up stuck on cards for 30+ minutes to the point where Anki will show me a card, I'll fail it, it shows me another card, I fail it, then it shows me them straight away again trying really hard to just get me to press Good and move on with my life.

Does this happen to anyone else? I do fine for a lot of it then get stuck in a nearly endless loop of bad bad bad bad bad good good bad bad bad
>>
>>139156770
Yes, except it happens at the last 150~100 words.
>>
>>139156770
The reason that happens is because the cards you're left with at the end are the ones you've already pressed "again" on earlier.
