Would there be any value in having a database of plaintext files copied down from the text in various manga? (No english translations, just the japanese text)

I was thinking I'd like something like that so I could follow along with it reading the manga in rikaichan.

Doesn't look like it could hurt and there aren't many cards and if they are accurate, why not? Nothing to really lose and there is something to gain. Go for it. It will take less than a week to go through and by then you should have a feeling of whether or not you feel like further reviewing.

>>
>>139118039
No it wasn't, at least not all of it. I have two of the mega accounts from the older split of accounts and received a bunch of obviously fake DMCA threads from throw away email addressed around 48 hours before getting email from mega explaining that my account was being looked into for fraudulent activity and when I went to log it, it kept screwing up, I had to reset my password and after logging in with the new password, my folders with a collection of light novels were all gone and the account says I have 50GB worth of date left on the cloud.
There is no fucking way I'm going to be using that account anymore.

>I've sent an email to the anon who gave me the mega account in the first place, no response.
The guy who distributed those accounts from the "original owner" is the original CoR guy who freaked out in the first place, so I hear. He's trying to destroy it again.

psp, ps3, ps4.
ps vita too, however...
because of how the system works, it's a damn pain in the ass to switch between two different-region accounts.
if i remember correctly, it's locked to the actual system, not even the memory card, and the only way to change it is to format the system and redo the initial setup. therefore if you don't want to lose your data, you have to have a spare empty memory card to put in before formatting. plus doing the setup takes a while and even includes something like a 3 minute unskippable video. i just gave up on switching back and forth because it was so annoying to do, especially compared to ps3 and ps4 where it's just a couple button presses.
>>
>>139120147
>it's locked to the actual system, not even the memory card
Nah, now you can swap cards around to play using different accounts.
But you shouldn't be using anything but the Japanese one anyway.

>. therefore if you don't want to lose your data, you have to have a spare empty memory card to put in before formatting
You can back up your data to your PC, so you don't need a second memory card. Having a second memory card is less troublesome though.
If you have ps+ you actually get cloudsave think?
Also you can always just import japanese games physically, you just wont be able to buy DLC
>>
>>139119902
Your posts didn't improve the thread. You flooded the thread with questions that were not a part of the conversation. I realize you think you were unnoticed, but I think it was clear that something strange was happening and that's why people started chasing ghosts. Conversations need to be organic; there can't just be people spamming isolated questions all the time.

I like reading english novels, so I assume I'd like LNs or Japanese novels, but they are pretty difficult. I don't know why but I always got bored and lost interest with manga and VNs. I don't think I've ever gotten past 2 volumes of any one manga.

I like to talk to people and watch anime, both of which aren't really going to help my reading. Maybe I'll try another LN

hmm. i might suggest to look for short-story kinds of manga. i really don't know many at all to be honest, but you know, little self-contained stuff like most of junji ito's.
since those kinds are really short, it would perhaps feel like less of an investment to slowly read through and probably won't become as boring or tiresome. have you tried reading stuff like that?

well i'm sure it's normal to an extent, but i've never had it happen on this level.
i'd continually forget the same card within 10 seconds like 5 times in a row. near the end it was cycling through like 5 cards every one of which i'd forget each time it came around. that's definitely an exaggeration but it sort of felt like that. my mind just felt comparatively hella blank during my reps today.

i find certain parallels between english and japanese kind of interesting, many of them are metaphors that i just wouldn't imagine being pretty so similar in japanese.
a similar thing i was wondering about
おかしい means both humorous and strange. we can say "funny" in english in the same way, meaning either funny "ha-ha" or funny like "this soup tastes funny..."
but does the japanese word prefer one meaning or have different sort of connotations from its english parallel? it's a pretty basic word but i'm inexperienced in seeing it in the wild

I'd say forget about the ones with 御 in front as long as you know it's just the kanji for the honorific お or ご that comes in front of some words (like ご飯 can also be written 御飯)

What you don't know is that I've been doing this since Feb, on and off and almost every thread I didn't run this little experiment, they had a couple of arguments that took up 100s of posts. So, what I've learned in 1.5 months as a beginner:
Pre-WW2 kana.
Modern kana.
25 simplified Kanji.
My question is if I should continue with the simplified characters or move on to the traditional ones? I don't really want to read any 1000 year old book at this point, so would it be wiser to go with simplified?

Just learn the pronunciation and bear in mind it has to do with go down/decrease, don't memorize the specific meaning.

It's more useful to learn it later with context.

There are still variants like 降る 降ろす.

I realize these are just examples, but japanese doesn't work on a simplified-traditional system like chinese. Both 龍 and 竜 are in use and have slightly different meanings, they aren't different versions of each other. And 礻 isn't actually a kanji.
>>
>>139126643
Are they shortened so you can fit more of them on a single bone?
>>
>>139126643
Nah man. Learn grammar, kanji and vocab at the same time.
>>
>>139126643
Huh, well again you shouldn't separate kanji into two categories. For each kanji, there is only one form that you should normally use and thus need to learn. Like you should know 示, but 礻 is useless, it it never used as a kanji, it's just a radical. And 龍 is very rarely used, you only need 竜 until you get to expert level.

By the way I would personally recommend studying grammar and general language instead of just focusing kanji exclusively for so long. Especially since you don't really seem to understand what kanji you even need or not.
>>
>>139126691

It's bait.
>>
>>139126931
But even if I understand the grammar, if I don't know the Kanji used it won't make any sense. Yeah, maybe with children's work in hiragana/katana it might work, but I want to read deeper stuff than that. I don't mean that as an insult to Japanese culture, just saying that I don't like reading things aimed at kids.
>>
>>139126998
did you start learning English with Shakespeare?
>>
>>139126853
>Why do I need grammar if I can't read? I really can't quite understand this concept of focusing on grammar without learning the alphabet.

You encounter a sentence, and if it contains any words you don't know, you just look it up, and that's how you learn new words. Then when you know all the words in the sentence, you apply the grammar and understand the meaning. Rinse and repeat.

I kind of understand where you are coming from, but you cannot apply the logic of english to japanese. You don't need to learn the entire collection of kanji before you start reading. In fact it is impossible. There is not a single person in the world that knows all the kanji there is. Even just learning the jouyou kanji is a huge undertaking, much less in addition to the obscure ones you mention. Expecting to master that before even learning any of the actual language like grammar and words, is like expecting to become a master of chess without ever playing a match. You learn the language by trying to reading and understand stuff you don't know, just like you learn chess by playing matches, even if you are sure to lose in the beginning.
>>
>>139127019
No, I didn't learn English.
>>139127020
But I'm not learning the language, I'm learning the building blocks of Japanese - Kanji. With full knowledge of Kanji it would be much easier to learn the grammar, wouldn't it? I think I can devote a year just to learning as many Kanji as I can and then starting grammar/vocab. Is it that bad of an idea?

I think what he means is that it would be more efficient to learn grammar and start reading CUMPELLING CONTENT because you can learn more Kanjis^TM per sentence and at the same time get a feel for the language and how it works.
>>
>>139127106

I'm going through a similar path, but I'm learning just 2000 to begin studying grammar, because I want to use what I'm learning before I start forgetting it.

I'm currently at 1900 words, 5 days to go, dokidoki suru.
>>
>>139127106
Just treat kanji like words rather than letters, because that's a more fitting comparison.

If you were learning english, would you first memorize the entire dictionary before you started actually reading stuff? Of course not. No way in hell you would be able to memorize the entire dictionary without reading stuff, because it is precisely by reading stuff you are able to memorize the dictionary. Except if you are savant maybe. And even if you somehow were able to, it would be EXTREMELY inefficient and frankly ridiculous.

But to answer your questions:

>With full knowledge of Kanji it would be much easier to learn the grammar, wouldn't it?
No, kanji has nothing to do with grammar.
>I think I can devote a year just to learning as many Kanji as I can and then starting grammar/vocab. Is it that bad of an idea?
Yes, that is a bad idea.
After you do that you'll realize that you learned absolutely nothing worthwhile because learning kanji completely separately is completely pointless when you don't know anything about vocab or grammar.

Long term.
>>
>>139127687
Because Kanji are NOT the alphabet. Kana are. Kanji are more of vocab than they are an alphabet.
>>
>>139127658
Well I'm already doing that but if I have to wait multiple days to review them it takes me ages to consistently remember them I feel like. Sure I can just concentrate more while first learning them and I'm doing that to the best of my ability, but wouldn't brute forcing be more efficient?
>>
>>139127742
you would be right, but only if we were all having a japanese exam in two weeks.

long term retention only happens by repetition and this doesnt men "20 times a day" but "20 times over the course of three months".

its a lot of work, yeah, but no one said this was going to be easy. you can try to "brute-force" 300 kanjis today, but you will have forgotten them all in a month.
