I really like this second season but the whole lore just seems like some silly playground rules.

Alright, you should probably watch it again since you've got a few things wrong. Mirai, Mika, Yuu, Yoichi, etc.. all have Seraphs in them from experiments as a child. Yuu (but not Mirai) also has a demon bonded to him with his sword. Yuu has a demon and is an angel, Mirai is an angel, and has no demon. Mirai being called a demon is figurative. The lore isn't too bad, though still mysterious, might want to give it a reread/rewatch,

Season 1 was a plain shonen with teammate melodrama, but the art was nice.
Season 2 used has those same characters actually playing off each other in interesting ways and generally being a really loveable team, but their superiors keep being cunts and ruining everything.
Logically the next step is to have them making decisions for themselves. I seriously just OVAs them scavenging around for those 4 months and having adventures. My favourite scenes this season were at the beginning when everyone was cooking and training. I'd love to see them scavenging for clothes, or running into other human survivors. A lot of anime tease the "everyone teams up and is best friends" climax, but flop pretty hard. There's a chance to do it right here.

That was the studio's fault for starting in the middle and ending on a cliffhanger. There is actually a ton more to adapt for LOLH they just chose not to. The novels were getting translated for a bit but they were super slow and I don't know if they continued.
