I don't think we face the kind of ordeals most of the characters do. When Nami is crying because she has been a slave to her mother's murderer for most of her life, just lost most of her life's work in a few minutes, and the inhabitants of her hometown are about to throw away their lives in a suicide attack, I think a few tears are warranted.
That's an example of course, but for the most part, they are facing actual trauma and not just crying because mom took their chicken tendies away.
