Nico did think about making friends, then her drama was shoehorned into the show at the last moment and wow it's love themed as well, overshadowing nakamashit completely. Maki has a legit backstory and that was also about the dangers of love. Yuta is her bitchboy, his dieting problems got 5 seconds of screentime, the rest of it is spent on pursuing Maki hopelessly.

The last few minutes of this episode actually made me tear up. Anime doesn't usually get me emotional, but just seeing how Katsuhira finally got to meet his past friends only to find out they're practically vegetables while simultaneously remembering who they were during his childhood and then remembering how bright Sonozaki was and how much she loved him, only for her to end up having to shoulder everyone's literal pain and having to take drugs to numb herself and then attempting to kill herself so she can save her friends - all this suffering just fucking sucks and it hurts.

What she wanted was unreasonable and impossible, and katsuhira is not at fault for being unable to reciprocate her feelings.

This show has both great and terrible characters.
When it focuses on the great characters, it's a solid show
When it focuses on the terrible ones, it's barely watchable
Unfortunately, the terrible characters seem to be Okada's favourites, and the ones she puts the most effort into. Fortunately, for once a director seems to actually be challenging her for creative control rather than letting her control the scenario entirely, so the not-terrible characters actually get some relevance and attention. If this was the typical Okada show, characters like MC and Nico wouldn't have actually spoken a line in 6 episodes and instead the entire plot of the show would have been overtaken by Maki's melodrama, which would have been extended into an 11-episode arc followed by a single, rushed trainwreck of a finale that wraps up nothing and is barely coherent.
