While they certainly gain quality between each release, I feel like something's... missing from the later releases. Especially the Movie release, it oftentimes feels too ornate, too fancy. Is this just me?

TV version is the best one. The abstract scenery makes it kinda surreal and perfectly matches the minimalistic character design.
The movies' backgrounds feel just like an agglomeration of stock assets. They could at least have hired actual background artist if they wanted to have detailed locations.

So I was watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit recently and the thought occurred to me:
Why hasn't anyone in the Japanese film industry tried to make a Roger Rabbit inspired movie/TV series with anime characters?
What would the plot be then? The cartoons in Roger Rabbit all come from an era where comedy shorts were big. None of them actually had back stories or a developed world they came from. Their whole point is to participate in a short show about 3-7 minutes long.
How would anime actually fit in a setting like that? Most anime have developed characters and worlds. It would be weird to have them through that away and have them know they are anime characters.

WFRR was about a detective investigating the murder of the owner of town populated by cartoons, which leads him to an insidious plot to destroy the town completely. Maybe the antagonist in this movie can be an otaku distraught over his waifu being impure or something.

Probably the same reason why actors in a play exaggerate, but for a slightly different reason.
Acting in plays is often exaggerated, because it's difficult for people who sit far away to see small movements of the body and face.
The same is probably true for anime. With a low budget it's difficult to animate everything that a normal human body does while interacting, so they exaggerate a lot to compensate.
How do you guys feel about absurdly high quality Bluray remasters of old shows? What interesting series have undergone this process?
