They actually seem to synchronize better when they're mentally healthy (relatively speaking). Asuka had better results with Unit 02 before she started falling apart and after she realized mama was a robot.

The more abused and broken Shinji is, the more pissed off Yui is at Gendo and the harder she murders Angels.
But really the pilots were fucked in the head to keep them from getting too hard to manipulate potentially derailing the plan.
This anime is a life changer. It's really hard to describe using words. There's really nothing like it. You have to experience it for yourself to understand the feelings and emotions. So much passion in the scenes. I don't know what inspired the writer of this anime to write something like Clannad, but that son of a gun is my hero.
I feel like the writer poured their heart and soul into every sentence, word, letter, etc. This anime is a masterpiece. It is one of the first ones I watched, and forever will be my favourite. I will never ever forget this anime as long as I live. You cannot watch this anime without crying. It's literally impossible.
