I think you're supposed to dislike Light though, at least near the end of Death Note. Unless you're intelligent, nihilistic and have a wicked sense of humor you're not supposed to empathize with late series Light, and even early series Light is a grey area.

Yugi spent years in the same head as Atem. He knew how his brain worked and how to counter his overall strategies. The Will of the Pharoah wasn't THAT great since in the game, it essentially just gave Atem the power to pull any card from his deck next and Yugi built his shit around fucking over Atem's deck. Atem underestimated Yugi as a duellist and didn't realise that he was still better than Joey despite Joey being 2nd and 3rd place in every WORLD class tournament and beat people like Bandit Keith and even legitimately beat Marik if he hadn't bitched out and fell on his face.
Kaiba won through money and resources,
Joey won through ballsy moves and unpredictability.
Marik and Pegasus won through mind fuckery.
Atem won through straight up reality manipulation.
Yugi was just THAT good at the game but couldnt hack it in Shadow Games. His lack of games just weighed in his favour since noone knew how good he was and what shit he did. He was literally the joker card of the group and the only implication of him being good at the game was that Joey never beat him which says pretty much everything.
