They appealed to the government and in 1978 it was decided that for every appearance of "Umi Da", a mangaka would get the equivalent of ~$50, an anime studio would get ~$1200, a novelist would get ~$20 and live action movies could make ~$2700.
Since then, the "Umi da" has become part of popular culture. The tourism bureau has observed in 1986 that the campaign was much more successful and far-reaching than anybody had hoped. Even after the "Umi Da" benefits ran out in 1988 people would continue adding them into their works of fiction.
