Houtarou Oreki falls in love with Chitanda Eru.
Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the rich girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to Chitanda, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, Oreki deduces that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the wannabe detective's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of CURIOSITY.

Handa's a great character as he is, and the dynamic he has with people works because he's not a generic pervert MC. Both series would literally be ruined if he was sexually attracted to the kids in Barakamon or the girls he thinks hates him.

It works the opposite too you know? There's clearly romantic vibes throughout the series but them entirely being played for laughs is something a kissless virgin would like. Nobody wants him to be a pervert, but it's fucking depressing that he's not had any romantic/sexual life whatsoever despite being a grown ass man.
Those 2 things are vital aspects of human sociological interaction and completely deleting them from the content of your series is extremely jarring. People who think that actually improves it are fucking pitiful.

It would be weird and depressing in real life, but the way the stories are written render a romance subplot unnecessary. Barakamon fills the emotional void with friendship, and Handa kun is reliant on his distance to people for jokes.

So, this show is meant to be a joke right? A parody of some kind with its heavy handed, blatant soundtrack, pretty visuals, one dimensional characters with nothing but gag comedy, and explanation via exposition and direct telling? None of this is supposed to actually be considered good, right? It's poking fun at MMO stereotypes right?
