So, /40kg/, why have you not embraced the Primordial Truth?
>>
Are Necrons or Orks good for starting players?

Or should I go Space Marines?
>>
From the last thread
So I have 10 grey hunters and I've just ordered the start collecting box. Then I'll have a wolf lord, 3 two, and 20 grey hunters. What other dudes should I add to my army? I'm planning on playing 1000-1500 point games. Should I get sky laws or bloodclaws? Even more greyhunters? Are we terminators worth it? Should I get drop pods or metal boxes?
>>
>>48131839
Space Marines and Admech are the best factions for starting players, as they're both very forgiving armies that allow you to learn the game at your own pace. Just start with tactical squads and work your way up the complication ladder this way.

>>
>>48131839
Necrons are a very good choice for starting players. Pretty simple rules and easy to paint (although kind of boring if you just pick grey metal with dry brush finish).
They were my first army and I really enjoy them, plus they actually have quite a bit of viable units that's its hard to make a terrible list.

Just starting orks now and all I have to say is you have to come to turns with the fact a lot of your boys are gonna die.

so /tg/, what are your thoughts on commission painted armies? Just curious because I can't paint for shit and I wanted a nice looking army for myself.

I've recently gotten a pair of armies (Tau, and a Tzeentch dedicated Chaos force) painted up by Den of Imagination and curious to know what you guys think of the practice.

Pic related: wip of my Tzeentch army. (ignoring the titan and tyranid)

see >>48131881 first.

Following that, consider Marines, because you have the largest choice of codices, from loyalist chapters to Chaos. Suppose you pick Necrons, drop $100 on them, then realize you don't like how they play. Now you're stuck with them, and there's not much to do about it. Marines don't have this problem, or at least, don't have it as much. The other thing, is that between all of the codex options you have, something will always be viable. You'll never be orks and get stuck with a shit dex for two an edition or two with no good options.

I made a small change to my Centaur HWT. After noticing that the power armoured torso weighed down the front of the model, I decided to attach rubble to the base to raise her up. The two front legs aren't glued to the base, instead I have the rear legs attached to the base with steel rods.
>>
Are there any good, free Epub readers?

But anon, I have no intention of playing BUSTY. My magical fucking Monstergirls in power armour will be tacticool operators, and my adorable lamia snipers will have tactical webbing, combi-lasguns, and actually decent sights for their stalker bolters.

I will say though that I now absolutely fucking hate the Missile Pack, it ruins all of the proportions. Next time I build a character with a missile launcher, it'll be using the standard power pack, or one of the light-packs from Anvil industries.

C&C?
>>
>>48132407
Yep, the plan is to go Imperial Cults and Militia with the Abhuman Helots + Survivors of the Dark Age to represent power armour monstergirls. I'm also going to represent the S5 30" Assault 1 Lasguns with some conversions with the anvil industries stuff.

I might make some cleavage with my recon squads, since they're the only ones not going to be sitting around in power armour. I guess I'll buy actual cheesecake models from some third parties, and cut them up to attach to Reaper Bones lamias and various other snek monsters.
>>
>>48132443

I've never seen fiends make their points, Just like my two exalted chariots, I'd be inclined to agree with you on adding in seekers if I had more points, The alt of this list has very few Psychic powers which frees up 325 points.

I also find that many players underestimate the amount of attacks that daemonettes can pour out, Short of the eldar player I used to play against I've never had many problems weathering the storm to get to combat.

Are Deathwing Command Squads worth the points, and if so what sort of loadout should I look at?

Also, wihch Land Raider is best for dedicated Terminator transport?
>>
>>48132493
Good. I expect results, anon.

>>48132642
Why would they be I2? Aren't Grenadier squads like I4 because of Abhuman Helots? Or does that one reduce initiative by 1?
>>
>>48132702
Yea, Abhuman Helots gives +1 Toughness, and -1 initiative. It also makes me desperate allies with armies of the imperium, and allies of convenience with chaos. Then again, Monstergirl operators is pretty damn close to heretical anyway.

You should come to Utah, there's dozens of game stores nearby and most of them have 40k groups. One of my nearby stores plays nearly every night, with tournies on Saturdays or the first Saturday of each month, not sure.

I'd play more but I work afternoon-overnight, so it's kinda difficult.
>>
>>48132680
The issue is that those Daemonettes aren't going to get across the board alive. 7th edition is extremely biased towards shooting armies. You're going to take fire all the way, you'll take more fire from Overwatch, and because you have no assault grenades, you'll end up striking last. And being only St3, you're almost entirely reliant on getting those rends to deal damage.

Mixed-deity Daemon armies can work pretty well, but mono-Slaanesh is one of the weakest. You've got next to no ranged firepower, no way of shutting down overwatch or getting through cover, no cheap Horrors to hold objectives and summon in new units. Honestly I'd say you're looking at an uphill struggle no matter what you want to use.
>>
>>48132879

Maybe it's just a West coast thing? I can't find anyone who plays 40k, or those that do field unpainted half assembled cheese lists and complain the entire time. Then sell their army.

Idk if I should shelf mine and wait for a new edition or what. The warma hordes guys seem to have tons of people abd get regular games in... might be forced to switch. Shit sucks.
>>
Posted in the wrong thread: >>48133012

Basically, how do I kill centurion devastators if they're cover-hugging as Guard.
>>
>>48132949

In the West Coast you probably have to be in major metropolitan areas to find a playerbase. If you're in the boonies or the middle of nowhere "where is that again?" kind of town even being on the West Coast won't help you.
>>
>>48133034
Plasma. Isn't there an Order that gives a unit Ignores Cover, or at least forces the target to re-roll cover saves? Use that in conjunction with some Veterans kitted out with max Plasma Guns and rapid fire them to death.
>>
>>48133034

Don't IG have built in Ignores Cover via orders? If not, just get ignores cover from a psyker. The only real issue with killing Centurions is if they're invisible.
>>
>>48133094
Alternatively, hit them with a Demolisher cannon. They might get cover saves, but any they fail will be Instant Death.
>>
>>48133080

I'm about 30-40 minutes from two cities so that helps, but I've never seen the player base coalesce or respond to any posts, emails, etc asking if they want to get a (casual) game on.

It's just frustrating. I don't dislike the game, I don't even hate GW, but the player base always acts evasive or sleepy weeb I try to approach playing their Gane in an earnest and honest manner.
>>
>>48133034
Ignores Cover, S10, Wound Spam, really anything that gives Ignores Cover.

Today I got into a debate about balance. The arguments were whetehr comp systems could fix the state of the meta. I argued no; that the books were too far imbalanced to make any comp system short of 'Storm Guardians are the only allowed unit'.

To test this, tomorrow at 4:00 eastern, there will be a 1000 point game. CAD only, no FW, no LoW (those were the restrictions by the comp system that prompted this debate)

On one hand, we have orks, played by not-me (I am an ork player, the other guy plays pretty much everything but orks). This is a list that is supposed to be as hard/strong as possible.

The other list will be necrons, and the first 970 points of it was made by pressing random buttons on battlescribe with my eyes closed until I got a legal list.

Should I do a battle report? should I post the lists?

First up, the necrons.

Illuminator Szeras
10 Warriors
10 Immortals (Night Scythe)
Ghost Ark (in fast attack, curse of the button mashing)
The Nightbringer
Doomsday Ark.

And for Orks- (All squads have a PK/BP nob, with the exception of the Meganobz who for some reason have no bosspole. All Trukks are stock)

Biker Boss with Lucky Stikk, Klaw
10x boyz in a trukk

12x Warbikers
9 lootas
3 Meganobz in a trukk
2 Traktor kannons.

Why not just use codex: space marines then?

They have all the same units so you may as well.
>>
>>48133633
Explicitly stated to be the same as the one from Raven Guard, and Raven Guard got an update. They gained Shrouded instead of stealth, but lost Scout. Which I suppose is a good thing for the current meta, because handing Scout like fucking candy to grav-cannon devastators for free would be broken as fuck. Also they get to add a +1 to night fighting rolls, which can be pretty amusing if I go up against an opponent that lacks searchlights, such as Orks, Necrons, and Eldar. Night Fighting heavily favors me in those cases.

I'd rather not take the more broken as fuck option anyway, so I'm on the mind that raptors use the newer version of the raven guard tactics, just because Scout-Grav Cannons is retarded. Scout+Infiltrate-Grav Cannons is even mroe so, given how easy it is to grab infiltrate on 4 squads with raptors.
>>
>>48133603
Sure, do a battle report tomorrow. I'd be curious to see it.
>>
>>48133725
It says as per the Raven Guard chapter tactics in Codex: Space Marines. Raven Guard were updated in Codex: Adeptes Astartes.

It's hilariously duplicitous to claim to be taking the less powerful option and then revealing that your HQ choice largely negates the loss of Scout and that the defensive upgrade is quite significant.

Realistically though it comes down to a friendly houserule between me and my opponent. This should be a gentlemen's game anyway, where the players agree on how the shit will go down. You gotta ask questions, like, "Hey man, can I use my deredeo as my warlord, and roll a warlord trait for him?"

Or, "Hey, let's not use any superheavies today,"

Or more recently from orkbro, "Hey raptors anon, bring your knight, I want my gorkanauts to have a duel with them now that they're superheavies. ^_^"

I hardly even use Lias Issodon these days anyway, most people balk at the ridiculous shit he brings. Like, "Oh, he's a bitch in melee that dies like a limp dick with no invuln saves of any kind", isn't enough of a weakness really to justify the sheer strategic force multiplier he puts on the board. He pretty much only comes out for tournaments, when I'm actually expected to be using the 3 grav-devastator squads with infiltrate list(Which again, tournament only because I hate waacfagging with a burning passion).

Nowadays I just arbitrarily pick a character out of my box from the list of various people I've made over the years. Like Captain Isaac, and Galahad. Lately it's been Captain Valentine and his enquerry, Techmarine Marius. Marius hangs around Valentine, and is basically the guy that makes sure valentine is still alive, while doing all of the captainly paperwork you would normally expect a captain to do.. Since valentine has 4 20 foot long cannons instead of arms.
>>
>>
>>48131977
I don't see a point in commissioned armies unless you're really desperate to jump right into the tabletop tourney scene.

It's not your baby.
>>
>>48134435
I can't stress this enough either. An army that you send off to another painter will never truly be yours. It doesn't matter if all you can manage is 3-colour tabletop quality, you still should at some point experience having some models that "YOU" made, and "YOU" painted, and "YOU" field.

Valentine is my baby, and he's still my work in progress. I sit down every day and try some new techniques on him, and after every day I get to know a little more of all his nooks and crannies. >There is art of non-Termie Deathwings.
And they have "company" veterans, but since 3e or 4e, their fluff says they don't have non-terminator marines in their first company. At least as far as I know.

As for why they don't have centurions, I'm not sure what the fluff is for that. I know Centurions are supposed to be rather new in the setting, having only recently been discovered. I suppose the reason is that the Dark Angels, Blood Angels, and Space Wolves just haven't adopted them yet. It apparently took awhile for the Land Raider Crusader and Predator Annihilator to see widespread use because the Astartes are incredibly conservative about new shit. Even the more outgoing chapters are slow to change or use new stuff.
Mark VIII power armour is several thousand years old, but hasn't even come close to replacing MK VII armour despite being objectively superior.
>>
>>48135757
>>48135621

>>
>>48135803
Not so much on "cheap." Grav tech is incredibly rare and hard to maintain/use in the Imperium (though grav cars do pop up in the novels from time to time).
The main reason they don't have a land speeder designed to transport power-armoured marines has nothing to do with the fluff.
GW doesn't want them to have one.

Necrons ignore everything already. They're easily the most annoying and frustrating army to play against because nothing dies ever.

Honestly the only time I've ever seen necrons die much was when my Ork-bro(playing the space 0din dex), brought 60 lootas. This was before the nerf to d33 for lootas weapons, so they were still rolling d3+1(cap3), which meant orkbro was pumping a retarded number of shots into everything at AP4. So it became a game of point & click with orkbro picking a necron unit and deleting it from the board every turn. Necron player was sweating bullets as he only had 6 units on the board. 6 really, really big units.

Deciding to turn my old, shitty CSM units into a Daemonkin army. No one in my area plays them, so I can't ask anyone for tips. Help me, please, /tg/.

I've already got:
-2 squads of berserkers
-2 squads of marines
-2 rhinos
-2 daemon princes
-1 helbrute

To actually make it usable, I'm thinking of making:
-1 forge/maulerfiend (I already have an unassembled kit. Which one, though? I'm pretty impartial; they're both awesome looking)
-2 squads of bikes with meltas
-2 packs of warhounds (proxy for flesh hounds)

I know a bloodthirster should be on that list, but I'm not ready to shell out $100 for a single (badass looking) model.

>>
>>48136746
forgefiends are shit, maulerfiends are perfect for a assault army rushing into your opponent's face as target saturation
>>
>>48136723
>His methods would have been acceptable during the Great Crusade.
Which occurred 10,000 years ago.

The start of the war wasn't really his fault, but trying to build up a legion-sized mass of marines is about as heretical as one can get. The whole point of limiting marines to chapters roughly 1000 strong is to prevent one person from having that much destructive power. Black Templars barely get away with it because they're so spread out each crusade more or less operates as an independent mini-chapter, but Huron was actively trying to make a legion.
It doesn't matter what his motives are, the Imperium cannot allow that shit to go down.

So, despite not really being at fault for the Badab War at the time it occurred, his actions would have resulted in it happening anyway. If anything, the Imperium was lucky to start things off early when they only had 3000. If he had managed to build up 10,000, or 20,000, or more, the war would have been much, much worse.
>>

also you should just magnetize your fiends so that you can swap out between mauler/forgefiend with different loadouts whenever you feel like it. while the forgefiend costs too much, it is a bit of a unique unit since as a walker it can move around for better LoS, and on average it will hit with 4 S8 shots. combined with daemonforge, it will practically guarantee you first blood if you opponent has any light vehicles, DP means it doesn't care much about crew stunned/shaken, and it has 5++ and IWND. it's a fun unit when it doesn't die first turn before firing. really wish they had AV13 at least, and WS4.

Just kidding, they don't get Divination, but DO harvest WC's on a 3+ when using Telepathy or Daemonology. Also Daemon units gain the Daemon of Tzeentch.

This. Expanded my Tzeentch Daemons to a playable army and haven't played with my CSM since early sixth. BL reprint killed my hopes for the next codex.

I like the Ocean world idea. Partially because disease has a hard time spreading in areas with low amounts of organics (AKA deserts).

Think about that floating pile of trash out in the Pacific that's the size of Texas. Now crash the Exxon Valdez loaded with AIDSoil into it. Now make it a planet. Focus more on the Decay aspect of Nurgle rather than disease.

I'd recommend scraping them off while they're still on sprue rather than later, and make sure you do it for helmets, armor, and lasguns as well. Or you can also cover it up with greenstuff straps, which is what I did on a few times when I forgot to scrape them off.

I am, to some extent. I envision my guards home-world as Arackis from dune from before the books start. Where during the Dark age of Technology a asteroid carrying the beginnings of the great spice worms landed on the southern continent. So now that the planet is in the imperium, the planets ecosystems are failing.

The remaining water is land locked in the north and in the poles.

The north is controlled by a hive-city controlled by a group of noble knight houses.

In the equatorial regions which is mostly desert tundra the main population (gypsy) lives on large railway caravans that move from munatorium junkyard to junkyard trying to piece together broken imperial guard equipment for a living.

To the extreme south is the free desert peoples. Seemingly nomadic peoples that for thousands of years have only been subdued by the sisters of battle even after repeated attacks from the knight houses because the mechanicus continuously wants to know where the Freemen find precious minerals in the south. However they cant just land in the sand and find out due to the ecclesiarchy and the munatorium claim the south of the planet in their protection so long as the tithes are paid, which stops foreign intervention.

So how is that for a roughly 1.6 biome world, anon?
>>
What's the best way of magnetizing knight arms? It seems like the only thing holding me back from swapping arms out is the shoulder plates?

Tzeentch used to give a 5++ base, and it was shit then.

Any reason why you haven't given Tzeentch/CSM Divination?
>>
>>48138309
This fan codex is just ridiculous. The wording alone is terrible; it's supposed to be "any X may exchange/take..." not "every X may exchange/take"
If you say "every" then that means every single one on the army.

And the fanboy shit is just bonkers.
>>
>>48138739

>Tzeentch used to give a 5++ base, and it was shit then.
>5++
>shit

Okay.

>Any reason why you haven't given Tzeentch/CSM Divination?

Thousand Sons and one other Warband gets it stock. Scourged didn't get it because their whole shtick is being able to read minds and know every falsehood as it gets spoken, so I buffed their ability to use Telepathy instead.

There are also a ton of other army-wide buffs in the supplement that make the whole army just overall better.

It really looks like something a vidya game would have as the final boss. Unlike the Dies Irae no one knows if the Abominatus has been destroyed yet.

5++ for free (or cheaper) would be one thing. 5++ on overpriced MEQ's? You can get as good or better of a save by hiding in some trees, and it does nothing to save you from weight of fire.
>>
>>48138767
>And the fanboy shit is just bonkers.

What specifically is "bonkers" about it? Seeing as how 95% of it is "fanboy shit," that's not exactly helpful criticism.

there is a rotary cuff joint where the gun elbow attaches to the shoulder. take a pair of N45H or N52 grade 5/16 x 1/16" disc magnets, build the shoulderpiece as instructed, but DO NOT clamp the cuff around the peg, instead trim the peg off, and build the elbow piece.

use superglue to stick a magnet where the peg was, use a piece of plasitcard to cover the magnet, and put the second magnet on the other side to ensure correct polarity.

apply superglue to the inner rim of the elbow joint socket, and then pop the second magnet into the hole, it should fit perfectly and form a snug fit giving the superglue an exceptionally strong bond.

for the thermal cannon/RFBC, use 3/16 x 3/16 cylinder magnets bedded in with greenstuff.

the shoulder plates can be magnetized using 1/8x1/8x1/16 block magnets edge-on, using one of the 3 spots where the ribbing on the shoulder plate is flush with the underside of the attahment rail. the rest of the molding should hold it in place just fine.

give me about 3-7 minutes and I should be able to post pics of my WIP knight.

You don't like it, make your own. Just saying, "it's bad," doesn't clarify WHY it is bad. If you don't tell me why it's bad, I do not know how to fix it, because I do not know what specific problem you're talking about.
>>
>>48138952
>You don't like it, make your own.

That's fucking retarded. Why should anyone make their own fandex? The reason people call you stupid is because nobody plays fandexes to begin with, so telling someone to go make a different fandex is just the epitome of retardation. Not as if we needed you to confirm your idiocy to begin with.

>Why should anyone make their own fandex?

Because their army wasn't polished when it came out 4 years ago and was designed to work in a completely different edition?

>The reason people call you stupid is because nobody plays fandexes to begin with

Been playing quite a few games at the LGS with a group of guys helping playtest some of these. Most of the reactions have been positive.

I'm a little confused why you're getting so personally offended about something that doesn't even affect you, anon.

you can see on the reaper how it sits flus with the joint, meaning the arms will be slightly longer in the end by 1/16, but its really easy to do

the large 1/2" disc magnets on the midsection really make it much more solid and durable than the balljoint+peg plus gravity.

Yeah, don't listen to the shitposter. The Imperial world predominant terrain categorizing is just simplified and he's a mong. Neat sounding planet though! I like armies with fully fluffed out planets and always thought I was nutters for writing up a whole solar system for my three different armies.

(not him)

oh please faggot, it's not that bad. I think the trouble in seeking quality criticism on the internet is due to one of two problems:

1) either the community is like reddit, full of well-meaning sycophants who suck each others' dicks so hard it's difficult to get honest feedback due to a social aversion to negative criticism
2) or the polar opposite, typically in the image board sphere, where pessimism is part of "board culture" to the point where it becomes ludicrously obnoxious and people post LMAO UR A FUCKTARD HOLY SHIT END UR LIFE HERE ARE TEN REASONS WHY YOU SUCK JUST DIE ALREADY, HOW COULD YOU EVER THINK THIS IS GOOD ACCORDING TO ME t. PROFESSIONAL because being an anonymous shitposter with a superiority complex has no consequences and strokes childish egos. this criticism is so exaggerated and typically uninformed/baseless that it becomes useless.

I can't really think of anywhere that maintains a happy medium between the two.

Not him, but I think the biggest issue is that you're trying to fix a gunshot wound with Band-Aids. You need to fix the codexes core issues before mucking about with a bazillion warband tactics.

I've wanted to start them, but my struggle is what's worth taking. I don't want to blow 400£ on Dragoons and Ruststalker just to see them die. What are the most solid units to take, in both Cult and Skitarii?
>>
>>48139139
pretty much correct, proven out over the last several generals with a couple different anons seeking feedback on projects and getting shat on just for daring to try something different.

guess people are happy for GW to spoonfeed them everything instead of taking the same spirit that drives good model conversions to the actual rulebook (try it, see what works, what doesn't, and you always have the original to return to)
>>
>>48139139
Here, of course.
>>
>>48137086
Remember that the people who made the game no longer work there. The best designers have moved on, the original writers are gone. Many who work there now don't get it.
>>
>>48139179
Vangards/Rangers, Dominus, and Onagers from what I know, though I don't play them. You can keep asking around as well as check their 1d4chan tactics page though if you want.
>>
>>48138862
There's nothing "minor" about semantic errors in a game like this. Poor wording of rules is the cause of nearly all arguments during games. That's where RAW v RAI conflict comes from.
Precision and clarity in wording is one of the major concerns of game design, and if someone can't be arsed to do it right then why should I even bother paying attention to their material?

Downplaying the importance of wording is bad.

It's a shame Forgeworld is so often guilty of this.
>>
How playable is 40k if I don't order any of the online only things from games workshop? It seems like all the unique characters are online only.
>>
>>48139158
Thank you, yes. This is the problem I meant, though I'm not sure I could have done a worse job of saying it in my first post.
It just throws a bunch of rules at a broken codex, making it more complicated without addressing what makes the army not work.

The attempt to add flavour is admirable, but adding spice to dog shit isn't going to make it a good meal.
At this point, the only way to save the chaos marines is to start over from scratch.
