Aside from that. I found something ancient, /cyoag/.

Making the Familiar CYOA reminded me of 4-5 years ago, when I was a hopelessly addicted to Ponies. I'm not in that phase anymore, thank god, I moved on a long ass time ago, but I remembered that I actually designed a CYOA that puts you in Equestria. Found it on the old forum I used to browse.

Dare I post it?

Seriously, Ren, what's the place with our wizard academy and our magical girl orphanage like? Big bustling city, or small hamlet? What's the tech level like - do we see clockwork towers and airships, cobblestone castles and full plate, or Renaissance dandies and painted women? Is a wizard going to cause a panic in the world at large, or is it "Oh, it's one of THEM?" GIVE ME MORE INFORMATION!

Also, continuing to beg that you add some degree of conflict. Conflict is the source of all drama, after all, and drama pushes the plot forward. Make it as mediocre or as overly dramatic as you like - just make it something, so we don't hate each other over our conflicting fanwanks.

Well fuck that noise then, I'd rather not get banned. maybe if we asked the mods or janitors politely, but I'd rather play it safe than sorry. And I ain't steppin foot in /mlp/.

ANYWAY.

Finished GMing my session so I got time for Familiars again. Yeah, sorry for pulling you around in a worthless circle with that site, I didn't realise how fucking empty it was. So have a bit of fun, quick lore.

And yes I will make an (optional) page 4 of Familiars that will have fluff and places of conflict.

Xeria is the primary country of the Familiar quest, a once great empire that fell into decline after Xer vanished from the face of the planet. Over the past 200 years, though, the country's been having a rise in prominence.

Befitting being the country where a great Wizard King once ruled the fucking world from, Xeria is THE leading country in magic, magical studies, magical goods, and magical influence. Ambition City stems from Xer's ideals, an ever expanding, great, magical metropolis with impossibly soaring towers and equally deep alleyways. And appropriately is the largest city in all of Catheridge. The city is nestled against the great Silent Lake, from which a wide, calm river flows south until reaching the ocean. Steep foothills and steppes line the northern border of the city, and deciduous, temperate forests are everywhere around it. With farmland dotting the woods out for many miles.

Aw thanks. Anyway. More lore.

The King's Academy and Madame's Orphanage both exist in the city, albeit in totally different environs for it. The King's Academy lies attached to the great Castle Catheridge, upon the soaring buttresses and walkways of the High District (pic sorta related).

Down in the shadowed, cramped alleyways of Ambition City, the Madame's Orphanage lies, well away from, but still uncomfortably close to the King's Academy. The Madame has many housemaids and servants to keep the establishment running, but Circe (with her Mystic Cat familiar) herself handpicks any girls she senses to have potential skill in Spirit Magic.

The technology level in Catheridge is a little schizophrenic. Catheridge has had no less than three world scarring catastrophes abuse the realm, each one stymying and pushing back the technology level by a fair amount. Airships once flew across the realm at the height of Xer's reign, but the Dragon Reckoning pushed the world back into a dark, chaotic age for several hundred years. When the Shadow Witch cursed Ironfar City, it heralded the event known as Light's End, when the Divine Family returned to Catheridge, and Rex began killing the Old Gods. It's now roughly 200 years after Light's End (233 After Light [AL] to be precise). The Divine Family are the prominently worshipped figures across the land, and the Heroes of Old ascended by their hand to fill the necessary gaps and help restore the world.

As a result of these catastrophes, You're as like to see a knight in full armor traipsing down the Ambition streets as you are a musketeer with a frilly hat and pistols at his side.

As for Spellcasters, Xeria has always held wizards in high regard and treated witches with caution at best. Ironic considering Eva, their patron deity, is the most worshiped of the Divine Family. The great northern lands of Fulheim has always distrusted magic and forbade its practices, a custom that's spurred a lot of tension with Xeria.

To the east of Xeria lies the High Pass mountains, the greatest mountain range in Catheridge and border of Eurreach, the Hearthland further east, and the Cold Wastes to the Northeast.

The Cold Wastes is regarded with fear and respect to the world at large, as it's home to relentless Ice Giants, Evil Fey, and is considered to be the birthplace of Witchcraft (a theory that's never been proven true, or false, but the existence of The North mystery provides many implications). The mountains and northern warriors known as the Garoh are all that keep the evils of the Cold Wastes from spreading south. And the Garoh are very good at their job.

Further East, past Eurreach, lies the great Elimine Forest, homeland of the Fey and where Titania and Oberon rule. Very few travellers enter Elimine, and very few emerge.

alright, but it costs perks to get the extra curse points. If you don't pick up a lot of curses, then it's a waste of perk points. If you do pick up a lot of curses, then you have points coming out of your ears anyway. So in both cases, why would you spend perks on it?

>>47848061
Slime Familiars aren't presently an option, since slimes in the animu sense aren't in the setting. Oozes exist, but I'm pretty sure no one wants to be a small puddle of burning acid as a familiar, and no wizards or witches certainly want one.

>>47848465
I was considering letting you burn 2 perks for a second focus, but thematically that clashes with Elder Wizards/Wizened Hags and their familiars. If a younger mage can get two school focuses, then why the fuck wouldn't an elder one have them or even three?

So my alternative was messing around with the Perk/School distribution depending on your master, with young students having a lot of perks, but no focus, adults having less perks and 1 focus, and elders having 2 perks or so, and 2 focuses. And making it so elders don't start with improved familiars by default.
>>
>>47848587
If the familiar got you to spend a standard action stopping its attack instead of defending or attacking its master then it did its job to be fair

I'll take this CYOA up on that monkey offer and be an urban primate, warping and scurrying about the city. Life as a small animal is bound to be not as fun, but at least I'll have hands. The focus isn't really worth much(other than the fact that I can just be a nice guy and heal some of the likely poor bastards in the slums), but body seems to be the only witch school that'll be able to use some sort of polymorph in the future(and also shotamode isn't that appealing either).

>>47848592
Nobody said anything about extra focuses, just blowing a perk to take your other focus power, so you get more power in one way. Humanize AND Cleanse, Cheer AND Heckle. None of the perks are mutually exclusive.

Also, fuck it, build:
>Waifish Orphan
Incoming magical girl alert.
>Mammal: Raccoon
Yep, it's me. I can climb, run, AND I've got hands? Sign me the fuck up.
>Focus: The Alleys, Urban Whispers
Home and Hearth is actually more or less useless. A respected witch can easily find food and shelter just for being a well-to-do old woman, a travelling witch won't stay in a city long enough to gain the perks, and a waif lives with Madam Circe. Maybe you should change that up a little to make it more useful.
>Perks: Talkative, Vanish, Speedy
Talkative lets me be the snarky reluctant helper I was born to be, Vanish is a useful as fuck tool, and...well, raccoons may be sneaky little shits, but they aren't the fastest out there. Uber powers are for wusses.

Anyway, like I said, Home and Hearth is fairly useless unless either the world is one big city, or you're too old to stay with Madame Circe but you're still homeless. Since option A is not true and option B won't be true for a while, then why do you have it? Sorry, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Ideas for a replacement:
>Home on the Stones
>- You've lived in this city forever - or if you haven't, you may as well. You blend in to the city as if you've been there forever. No matter how strange you are, so long as you don't call attention to yourself, people's eyes will just slide over you. This can extend to your master. It won't let you into someplace you clearly aren't supposed to be, but it'll let you blend in as just another face in the crowd. As an addition, the streets are just as familiar to you as you are to them, and you can practically find your way around by the feel of the cobblestones under your feet and the bricks in the walls.

Overcome (x2)

And now, the news at 11.
Earlier this week it was discovered that a young homeless boy had metamorphosed into a psionic space creature overnight. The cause of this is unknown, but what is known is the damages. Several millions have been tabulated in property damages as this anomaly of nature attempts to maintain his weekly gradeschool routine. Suspected parents of the child refused to comment on the matter, save for the supposed father stating "I ain't payin that shit, bill my ex wife's cosmic side man". The local fishman tribes were interviewed on the matter, but their chanting "Ia! Ia!" gave little insight. Currently researchers of all fields, both truly scientific and paranormal, have come from across the globe to study the miracle monster child, with one woman, a one Julie Slater stating "Eat it monkeys I fucking told you they were real!" Back to you, Tom.

It's called critique. The guy wasn't even overly insulting to you. You're getting offended that someone has an opinion and a criticism and they simply expressed it. You're the one that needs to grow up here, because you sound like a teenage deviantard.

There are plenty of sociopaths in modern societies who live relatively normal lives. They don't really give a fuck about others, but they can be normal, productive members of society. Do you know nothing of the world outside?

>>47849225
Not the guy you're arguing with, but I think you're exaggerating a little. Let's go through them all in order:
>Emotion Link
Dangerous, but not lethal depending on how hard your powers respond.
>Rage
You're right about this one, it'll fuck you over.
>Unsettling
Bad, creepy, but not actually crippling, especially because you have allies.
>The Voices
Yeah, you're definitely fucked.
>Phobia
Fairly fucked. Probably not as bad as some, but pretty fucked anyway.
>Migraine
Nasty stuff, and just might be crippling. Non-lethal, but still nasty.
>Sleepwalker
Unless you're living in a tent in the middle of nowhere, you're fucked as soon as you accidentally kill someone.
>Drained
Tolerable. Not good, but tolerable.
>Empathy
You are definitely, entirely fucked. Humans are, by definition, social creatures, and dumping that is a one-way ticket to go fuck yourself.
>Ego
Dangerous, but not deadly.
>Inhuman
Same as Empathy.
>Night Person
Not bad, not bad at all. There's still danger, but there's no real harm to long clothes and sunglasses if you just claim you have a skin condition. It's not a lie, either.
>Eyesight
Problem, sure, but not overmuch. Unless you pick Blind. Don't pick Blind.
>Muted
Yet another one-way ticket to Fucksville.
>Deafness
You underestimate how much we rely on our sense of hearing. This is a bad one.
>Weakness
You're fighting supernatural monsters. Do not.
>Cowardly
Ew. Not crippling, but ew.
>Asexual
The most harmless curse out there.
>Cycles
That's definitely going to sting, especially because Murphy dictates everything comes at you at your weakest. Could be bad.
>Bound
This is the equivalent of being a tactical suicide boss in vidya. Don't do it. Your friend doesn't have supernatural powers to defend themselves with.
>Animal Foes
As it says, inconvenient in an urban area, but dangerous in the wild. Inadvisable.
>Sickly
Again, you're fighting a load of monsters. Don't do this.

You get the point. Bad, yes; instant death, no.
>>
>>47849281
Sabotage what? People are complaining that there are no easymode drawbacks for free points, when there are, so long as you're actually creative, as exemplified by the fact that 3/4 of the builds posted do use the drawbacks. The drawbacks are in need of no change, and these guys who cant figure out how to thematically work in how the drawbacks presented could correspond to their powers don't really have good justification for demanding change.

I mean, unless you were implying they were sabotaging the CYOA. Then I could almost see where you're coming from, but to say that the complainers have that much influence is a bit of a stretch IMO.

>>
>>47849471

Ah, I see how you mean. And Home and Hearth is good for Witches that aren't the little girl. Wandering Mistress is certainly going to visit many cities... but also has her own wagon to sleep in, and Wizened Hag... Has a coven... and...

...

Yeah, it's shit. I'll change it in the next version I make.

Anway, general question for the /cyoag/ thread concerning Familiars. Do you guys like bars? Like a changing scale that represents some general fact. I was thinking about reformatting the master choices and adding some bars to represent what living with them would be like. Namely

>DANGER
The overall threat and risk of injury of the life your master lives. Lower is safer while higher is, well, not.
>POWER
The magical capabilities of your master. The higher this is, the more power and influence they command at your time of becoming their familiar.
>COMPASSION
How much your master initially and will overall care for you. The higher this is, the more likely you two will get along. Being friendly and dutiful helps, of course.
>SOLITUDE
How lonely your life is going to be, initially. The higher this is, the less of other mages and familiars you'll see.

Ah, there you are. I kinda like the concept, but you might want to include some measure for Influence - what people think of your master, whether good, ill, or they don't give a shit.

Also, here's another idea for a perk replacement, because I should have been in bed half an hour ago but I'm busy shitposting:
>Friendly Face
>- Some people are wallflowers, keeping their heads down and going about their business while talking to as few people as possible. You and your mistress are not like them. People naturally like you because you like them. You're a common face around the city, and people will expect to see you and your mistress wandering around. They'll be more likely to offer help, share gossip, or give headpats.

>>
>>47847914
>Waifish Orphan
Always start young, they can grow up to be something later.

I assume a familiar's lifespan is tied to its master's, provided that it isn't killed first.

>Avian: Crow
Or raven as the CYOA mentions, there's no actual distinction between the categories. It's appropriate, and common enough to blend in completely.

Interestingly, Crows are naturally capable of speech like parrots (probably better, they are much smarter). I'm going to assume for the purposes of this CYOA that I CAN use this without purchasing "talkative", but that learning to do so is extremely difficult and will never be perfect, compared to automatically being able to speak fluently.

>Focus: The Spirit
The other reason why Crow is so thematically appropriate. Ghostwalk effectively supersedes the "freedom" perk (except on cooldown rather than permanent). I'm going to assume that it is just as effective letting me pass through living matter (eg hands, claws etc) as it is through inanimate objects, but ineffective against purely magical attacks.

Spirit's call is what essentially gives us our purpose in magic, as well as providing an essential ace in the hole.

>Speedy
No need to pick a fast bird of prey, since I'll be faster with this no matter my species

>Sturdy
"Living bullet" sounds useful when subtlety and magic both fail.

>Guide
Won't be useful NOW, but witches being what they are a settled life isn't very likely, so this is sure to come in handy eventually.

I was tempted to take Pickpocket, but I don't want to cause MORE trouble.

Nice build. You're effectively right with your assumptions. Don't worry too much about needing or not needing Talkative, because I'm still thinking about removing it entirely and making it so Familiars can speak freely by default.

Ghostwalk does indeed let you pass through living things. Magic will still pose a problem, but it poses a problem to the familiars with Freedom as well.

>Therapy Pet: You're calming to be around. Something about stroking your fur, feathers, or scales just takes the edge off any stress your master might be feeling. Not combat-strength, but just nice.
>>
>>47850193
That sounds like it could be lumped into Charming, desu.
>>
>>47850257
Uh...I mean, maybe? I was thinking Charming basically gave people diabetes by looking at me, and this basically just made me into a security blanket - a source of courage, calm, serenity, and hope, no matter what I'm really like.
>>
>>47850042
I don't really NEED to talk to mundanes anyway, except maybe to shout at them for some stupid thing. I didn't pick a crow for that, I just thought it was an interesting bonus.

I was out and about yesterday. I'll finish grammatical corrections for page 2 and start 3. As always, change what you see fit.

THE NEW ORDER DEFLECTOR
>Compact defense, the red...
"Compact armor that provides a stellar defense and a high rate of mobility due to the lightweight materials used to make it. Comes with a free red paint job after several violent interactions."

>armor had built in...
"Capable of emitting a deflector shield that will redirect most any projectile. The shield is not nearly as strong as the nano shield, but is able to last for a longer duration. Requires resources to use and maintain."

>If the deflector...
This part's perfect, minus the space between 'penetrated' and the comma.

HEAVY MOBILITY SUIT

>superior defense
"Grants superior defense. The armor is incredibly durable, able to withstand standard infantry firepower without sustaining damage; however, the armor is tremendously heavy."

>jetpack can't make...
"The built-in jetpack allows for quick bursts of speed in the direction your body is facing. You will not be able to sustain flight, but you can blitz enemies head-on."

>this armor rely...
"This armor relies heavily on the jetpack for a high mobility rate. Without it, the armor is very cumbersome. Naturally, you will have an easier time moving if you are Buff or took Strong."

ULTIMATE BULLDOZER ARMOR

>Extreme Defense...
Extreme Defense -> Extremely defensible; "combat-assistant".

>capable of...
"Highly effective for close-quarter encounters. Capable of rending flesh and piercing think armor with vibranium [we are making things up now] claws."

>require battery...
"Requires battery to function. When prolonged exposure to conflict is foreseeable, be sure to bring an extra battery to charge the suit."

Jonah's setup is simple in effect: he never is physically present if he can help it. Though the name is a riff on the sailors' superstition, Jonah is a boon to his allies. He projects himself astrally to interfere in events with mechanically precise telekinesis and blessings/curses. If the lights go out at just the right moment to give you cover, thank Jonah. If one of your enemies suddenly clutches his head right before turning his gun on his comrades, thank Jonah. If a monster that was about to eat you suddenly explodes after being hit with tons of invisible force, definitely thank Jonah.

His nigh-permanent invisibility renders concealment effortless; Jonah's allies have no idea that the mysterious force aiding them is actually an unkempt youth sleeping in an alcove beneath a bridge, possessing passersby to bring him food and money. Communicating with telekinesis or through the occasional possessed pawn renders the mute Curse irrelevant, and though people definitely find his actions and the way he always seems to know what you're thinking unsettling, he's never around to suffer the physical consequences of his meddling. Should anyone stumble upon his physical body, he flees with teleportation.

Shit I'm only supposed to pick ONE of the two focus abilities. >>47850042 You are supposed to call me out on that shit.

I suppose I just take Ghostwalk. Makes things rather boring, without "spirit's call" there's not really anything explicit for us to DO and all of my perks are basically focused around simply exisiting, but ghostwalk is by far the more functional.

>>47848592
Really IMO they should just grant both anyway (by default, not a choice). This sets your theme and purpose, everything else is just survival.
>>
>>47851133
ANNIHILATOR needs a secondary weapon. at least a heavy MG, otherwise it's only weapon leaves it very vulnerable if you fuck up a shot. What do I do if I need to kill something that isn't a small country?
>>
>>47851266
Stomp.
>>
>>47851266
I considered that when revising, which is why I worded the change the way I did; "eliminates the need for a primary weapon." As far as interpretations go, a secondary weapon is still available.

1. Dependent - Yandere who can't live without, and needs you to be her support.
2. Monopolizing - Yandere who will go to the extreme to hog you to herself, and lock you away if she has to.
3. Eliminating - Yandere who kills those who get in the way of her, and her love.
4. Attack - Yandere who will get you physically to fall in line. It can be rape or he physically beating you.
5. Stalker - Yandere who stalks their love and knows everything about them.
6. Harmless - Yandere who does everything to see their beloved happy, but quietly hurts themselves.
7. Worshipping - Yandere who worships their beloved and will do anything for them.
8. Delusional - Yandere who makes up stories and heavy ass revisionism to make the world perfect for her, and her beloved.
9. Isolating - Yandere who makes you rely on her as she ruins your life secretly or openly.

A girl having a boyish build doesn't mean without tits, it means a general lack of figure. Such as not having notable hips or lacking a narrowing of the waist. As for just about any girl saying they have a boyish build, it almost always means their body isn't as clearly feminine as they would like.

That's fine NORMALLY, but quiet wants to make that impossible. Everything is a curveball, everything is worse than it appears, and the only one who knows how fucked you really are is him.

In a normal CYOA you are given some details and expected to fill in the blanks, but those blanks are supposed to logically follow from what you are given, not be massive unknowable twists.
>>
>>47852689
That's not how CYOAs work. If the author doesn't put something in, then it doesn't exist. If the author goes and adds or changes something, then you can just change your build too.

It's doomed to failure.
