Neapolitan_War.jpg
96 KB, 937x1453
It is 201 years since the Battle of Tolentino, fought near Tolentino, Kingdom of Naples in what is now Marche, Italy. This was the decisive battle of the Neapolitan War, fought by the Napoleonic King of Naples Joachim Murat to keep the throne after the Congress of Vienna. The battle itself shares many parallels with the Battle of Waterloo. Both occurred during the Hundred Days following Napoleon's return from exile and resulted in a decisive victory for the Seventh Coalition leading to the restoration of a Bourbon king.

In 1808, Marshal Joachim Murat was appointed to the throne of Naples by Napoleon Bonaparte. Ruling from afar as he participated in Napoleon's campaigns, Murat deserted the emperor after the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813. Desperate to save his throne, Murat entered into negotiations with the Austrians and concluded a treaty with them in January 1814. Despite Napoleon's defeat and the treaty with the Austrians, Murat's position became increasingly precarious after the Congress of Vienna convened. This was largely due to increasing support to return the former King Ferdinand IV. With this in mind, Murat elected to support Napoleon upon his return to France in early 1815.

Moving quickly, he raised the Kingdom of Naples' army and declared war on Austria on March 15. Advancing north, he won a series of victories over the Austrians and laid siege to Ferrara. On April 8-9, Murat was beaten at Occhiobello and forced to fall back. Retreating, he ended the siege of Ferrara and reconcentrated his forces at Ancona. Believing the situation to be in hand, the Austrian commander in Italy, Baron Frimont, sent two corps south to finish off Murat.

Led by Generals Frederick Bianchi and Adam Albert von Neipperg the Austrian corps marched towards Ancona, with the former moving through Foligno with the goal of getting in Murat's rear. Sensing the danger, Murat sought to defeat Bianchi and Neipperg separately before they could unify their forces.

Sending a blocking force under General Michele Carascosa to stall Neipperg, Murat took the main body of his army to engage Bianchi near Tolentino. His plan was thwarted on April 29 when a unit of Hungarian hussars captured the town. Recognizing what Murat was trying to accomplish, Bianchi began to delay the battle.

Establishing a strong defensive line anchored on the Tower of San Catervo, Rancia Castle, the Church of Maestà, and Saint Joseph, Bianchi awaited Murat's attack. With time running out, Murat was forced to make to first move on May 2. His force numbered 25,588 men, 4,790 horses and 58 guns; the Austrians had 11,938 men, 1,452 horses and 28 guns.

Opening fire on Bianchi's position with artillery, Murat was achieved a minor element of surprise. Attacking near Sforzacosta, his men briefly captured Bianchi necessitating his rescue by Austrian hussars. Concentrating his army near Pollenza, Murat repeatedly attacked the Austrian positions near Rancia Castle.

The fighting raged throughout the day and did not die out until after midnight. Though his men failed to take and hold the castle, Murat's troops had gotten the better of the day's fight. As the sun rose on May 3, a heavy fog delayed action until around 7:00 AM. Pressing forward, the Neapolitans finally captured the castle and the Cantagallo hills, as well as forced the Austrians back into the Chienti Valley. Seeking to exploit this momentum, Murat pushed forward two divisions on his right flank. Anticipating a counterattack by the Austrian cavalry, these divisions advanced in square formation.

But as they neared the enemy lines, no cavalry emerged and the Austrian infantry unleashed a devastating barrage of musket fire on the Neapolitans, tearing through the massed squares. Beaten, the two divisions began falling back. This setback was made worse by the failure of a supporting attack on the left.

With the battle still undecided, Murat was informed that Carascosa had been defeated at Scapezzano and that Neipperg's corps was approaching. This was compounded by rumors that a Sicilian army was landing in southern Italy. Assessing the situation, Murat began breaking off the action and withdrawing south towards Naples.

In the fighting at Tolentino, Murat lost 1,120 killed, 600 wounded, and 2,400 captured. Worse, the battle effectively ended the Neapolitan army's existence as a cohesive fighting unit. Falling back in disarray, they were unable to stop of the Austrian advance through Italy. With the end in sight, Murat fled to Corsica. Austrian troops entered Naples on May 23 and Ferdinand was restored to the throne. Murat was later executed by the king after attempting an insurrection in Calabria with the goal of retaking the kingdom. The victory at Tolentino cost Bianchi around 700 killed and 100 wounded.

This is an obscure but significant battle that offers something different for the Napoleonic gamer - the "Italian Waterloo". The Neapolitan army is one of the most gorgeous of the period, even if its performance was usually poor.

>>
>>47056931
The tactics in those days were between large units. The 800+ man pike unit was popular, as it gave good defense against cavalry. They usually surrounded these with 800 - 1000 musketeers, for some fire defense or attack.
Muskets in those days were terribly inaccurate, and you needed 100 or more men firing in a volley to actually do any damage at range.

While I suppose skirmishes still took place, it seems kind of an odd period for skirmish warfare, seeing as the real interest lies in different units facing off, cavalry vs pikes vs musketeers vs artillery.

Most games from the period tend to cut down on the number of models needed, sometimes representing the ~800 man pike unit with only 4 or 5 miniatures.

A system like D&D would probably work for skirmishes, it has rules for muskets and horses and all the weapons of the period.

Watch "the Last Valley" it has some great inspiration for Thirty Years War games and the feeling of the time

I'm not that versed on Ottoman forces of the era, but I'm sure you could use that army for any conflict up until the Janissaries were abolished in 1826. Osprey seem to place the turning point around 1775. The Ottomans fought a lot of wars against Austria and Russia during the 18thC, and of course were involved in the Napoleonic conflicts as well.

They dropped it sometime around the 1770s I'd say, which seems to be the point when the Ottomans started inviting Western advisors in to change things, and you get stuff like the Nizam-i Djedid.

Murat's always had a bit of a bad rap as "the Dandy King", with a lot of emphasis placed on his foppish obsession for costume and general party-boy antics. He was very much a light cavalryman, although not quite as extravagant as Lasalle. Being married to one of Napoleon's sisters made him an important part of the inner circle, but it seems no-one ever has a good word to say about Caroline. The Neapolitan forces he commanded were famous for their gorgeous uniforms, and Murat was constantly redesigning and tweaking them. However they were equally famous as being the worst army in the Wars. Supposedly Napoleon refused to give them Eagles because "these troops are no better than none at all." Apparently the best regiment in the force was the all-black 7th "Royal African", which performed very well in the 1812-13 campaigns.

Murat was, however, immensely brave and a competent leader (although certainly not in the upper tiers of Napoleonic commanders). After an inspired but cynical attempt to take up the cause of Italian unification (if only to preserve his throne) he was captured and executed, and died very bravely.

>When the fatal moment arrived, Murat walked with a firm step to the place of execution, as calm, as unmoved, as if he had been going to an ordinary review. He would not accept a chair, nor suffer his eyes to be bound. "I have braved death (said he) too often to fear it." He stood upright, proudly and undauntedly, with his countenance towards the soldiers; and when all was ready, he kissed a cameo on which the head of his wife was engraved, and gave the word — thus: "Soldiers! Do your duty! Straight to the heart but spare the face. Fire!"

Question to keep the thread bumped during off-peak:

If you were able to travel in time and join any military formation from ancient to recent past, who would you choose and why? The catch however, is that the unit has to be one that was eventually destroyed, and you have to be present for its final battle. Who do you chose and how will you go out in style?

Played a quick battle earlier this afternoon. Pitted a Venetian nobleman (retainer), his personal bodyguard (retainer) and four household servants (levies) against some hired assassins (1 retainer, 6 levies).

The Venetians were armed with rapiers and main-gauches or Italian falchoins and sword breakers, plus a couple of wheellock pistols.

The assassins had cudgels, stilettos, curved daggers and a crossbow. They'd chosen to ambush the Nobleman and his household as they left the Unicorn, a renowned brothel in one of the seedier parts of Venice.

The battle descended into a series of bloody one-on-one duels. The highlights include the duke's bodyguard fending off three different assassins on a bridge before being tackled to the ground and butchered. the duke himself tossing an assassin into the canal before being mortally wounded by a crossbow bolt.

In the end, the Venetians were forced to retreat in the face of such perfidy, but not before littering the streets with the bodies of their assassins.

It was a shit-tonne of fun to play. Chevauchee excels at modelling "little wars" between a few combatants aside, and a bit of gang warfare in some really fucking narrow streets really helped bring that out.

Also being able to strike first is pretty powerful. The rapier-armed householders out-classed the knife-wielding assassins in a straight up fight. Unfortunately not so much in the grapple. Being tackled and shanked by a stiletto is a pretty bad way to go.

Going off of that, what besides the gear and weapons would make a skirmish ruleset show that it was designed around the Thirty Year's War instead of, say the Hundred's Year War in your opinion?
I knew people would mention GW, but I was just going off the top of my head there with a skirmish ruleset I could remember somewhat close to the time period. However I do know of a free sixteenth century one here http://perfectcaptain.50megs.com/SpanishMain.html

So I was skimming through Sharpe Practice 2 today, and decided to check out the army lists. Was surprused to see very few lists for the Napoleonic Wars. No Russia, no Austria, no Prussia. Do we expect these to show up later? I know Black Powder also has no Austrian list available, which sucks.

Avoid black powder anyway, as far as I'm concerned there are plenty of games which do Napoleonics better, although ymmv I suppose.

It's not that popular, pretty much every recommendation is couched with a 'but' or equivalent.
And there's plenty of complaints about things like book layouts being full of padding in both distracting extras and rambling text. And the systems feeling pretty/incredibly generic is a very common comment.

warlord has it's ups and downs the main black powder and pike and shotte rule-books are very much more suitable for a larger group/club with eclectic collections that want to make up their own lists.

The supplements solve the generic problem and add in some great additional rules as well as having army lists to cover the forces.

If you are concentrating on one period it may be cheaper to just buy a dedicated rule set

Being devoured by dragons. Turns out that huge-size creatures are pretty badass in Chevauchee.

Re-worked my initial monster hunt to give the humans a bit more of an advantage. Somewhere under the blue skies of the Mongolian steppe, a monstrous fire-breather stalks the nomadic tribes, devouring the sheep and oxen necessary for the tribe's continued existence.

The youthful Temujin, soon to be crowned Genghis Khan, lord of all those who dwell in felt tents, dispatches his finest warriors to slay the beast, promising to reward the successful hunters with their own weight in gold and precious stones.

The hunters track the beast for many leagues, eventually bringing it to battle over the charred ruins of a Mongol camp.

A few shell-shocked peasants lay whimpering amidst the blackened shells of their gers. The dragon prowls the ruins, snacking on the corpses of barbecued horses.

While the extra mobility granted by Mongol ponies gave the hunters more of a chance than their Western counterparts, they still ended up as dragon food. The force consisted of two mounted retainers with lances and short bows and light armour, three mounted levies with short bows and hand weapons.

They managed to knock the dragon down to one wound, but then a blast of fiery breath put two of them to flight and the last retainer died charging the dragon with his lance lowered.

The combo of skirmish and tank combat kinda limits things.

I wouldn't recommend Bolt Action if you want good tank combat at least; it's armour rules are pretty abstract and limited and it's very much an infantry game.

I haven't tried the vehicle rules in Five Men at Kursk, but they look pretty comprehensive so it'll probably work.

While it isn't skirmish, Schwere kompanie feels for me like a very good balance between tanks and infantry. Infantry is either a fireteam or a squad, and tanks are individual vehicles.

Disposable Heroes has serviceable (dare i say good?) tank combat. The weak spot is the Spotting phase and the Penetrating hits being cumulative for all the areas of the tank, but it can be easily houseruled.

I'm feeling a bit unsure about the shield with the wyvern on it, it doesn't look bad from a distance but I'm really sure if I should bother re-doing it or leave it as is.

What type of crossbow was typically used by European nations for formation shooting, non-siege? Lever, or windlass?

lolpoof
>>
>>47132788
Depends on time and place.
>>
>>47132788
The crossbows that were used during sieges were probably the same ones that were used in formation shooting, because soldiers had to carry around their own gear and soldiers are known to throw away anything they find unnecessary.

You can't find D6 in your local area? Where do you live, some isolated farmstead in Siberia? Literally take them from your monopoly set.

You want Space:1889 by Frank Chadwick/GDW. The wargame rules it uses (in the Soldier's Companion) are considered one of the better Victorian sets.

Oh hey, this is a legit good game even for straight historicals. The Soldier's Companion book is a standalone game, and there's a reasonably priced POD available on Amazon that's good quality, if you want it in hardcopy.

Damn straight. Chadwick's one of the great wargame designers. Can't go wrong with the guy who created Traveller, Third World War, Twilight 2000, etc etc. By any chance are you the anon who actually fought a few games with that book and posted the AARs here? It was a while ago. They seemed to be having a great time.

Nope, that's not me, but they sound rad. I mostly use the rules with brits and kroot askari and don't pay too much attention to the canon setting, but I do love some of the ships. Aphid <3

I made one ages ago by writing the numbers on paper squares, then PVA glue-ing them to the dice. Worked really well, and the dice is solid as fuck, didn't fray off or anything.

Used it for the Russo-Japanese naval game that we fooled around with back in the /tg/ naval thread days. The average dice generated how many command points you got at the start of each turn

I'm looking for a specific set of Strategy and Tactis magazines + games and can't find them in the archive. Live in Japan so English wargames aren't exactly plentiful and the few shops that carry them don't have the ones I'm looking for either. Anyways if anyone knows where to find scans of these it will be greatly appreciated.
