I'd like to try painting a 40k knight with a similar dark armor to pic, what two colors would folks recommend I get to get a similar effect?

I've gotta paint the inside of a dude's mouth. Pic related is the miniature.

What colours can I use to make it look natural and not too red?

Should I go with white for the teeth or would that be too much of a model smile on a dude like this? What would be a better alternative?

I'd say something like Pallid Wych Flesh from citadel is good for slightly off white teeth color, just put that on, then a very thin wash of something like agrax earthshade, then put a little of of why fleh on the tips of the teeth, maybe mix in a little pure white if it's not looking bright enough, and for the mouth itself, you could always mix a little purple into the red to bring the tone down a bit

>>
>>46438315
Sweet. Thanks dude. Any ideas on what sort of red or purple would work? I'm just starting out and shit at colour theory. I'm scared to death of picking the wrong colours.

>>46438547
I'm a new player also! My list focuses on strong firing lines and displacement into the firing range of those firing lines. Though I'm worried it'll probably be too static when it comes down to play. Gonna have fun playing it though. I'd go more indepth but as much as I'm jonesing for Malifaux discussion, I don't wanna ramble on about offtopic stuff.

As far as posting progress: I'd love to! But the paints I need are on their way to me currently and I'm still unsure what I'm going to paint other bits. Also I'm not that good. I've only painted one model before. So if you're looking for a good guide or anything, perhaps look elsewhere? I can post stuff when I start painting him. Was going to do it for critique and advice anyways.

>>

I've used some of the tips here (http://www.bushido-thegame.com/articles/painting-tattoo) to good effect. Mixing your flesh base color with the tattoo color(s) works great.

Aside: where's a good place to start reading up on techniques to get better? I've just cruised along at my skill level for many years, but I want to try to start getting better so when I get those cool minis I want to treat right, I can. I just do lazy ass painting usually like prime -> basecoat -> wash -> highlight -> highlight. Wet blending if I really want to make something look good.
>>
>>46438379

Do it. Painting minis is fun, and Bones is cheap as shit. Can't get better if you don't paint anything.

Very, very gradual blending anon.

I like to go in thirds. So, in increasing brightness A-> B -> C -> D, apply two layers of each:

A
2/3rd A 1/3rd B
1/3rd A 2/3rd B
B
2/3rd B 1/3rd C
1/3rd B 2/3rd C
C
2/3rd C 1/3rd D
1/3rd C 2/3rd D
D

Pic related is some fur done like this, although I only used three colors and probably could've used a fourth to make it more gradual. I also only did one layer each, which led to some weird wave crest effects where each layer is sharpest on the edges.

Hi, >>46439481 here
The thing with power swords is how to vary them from a regular weapon - while it's perfectly valid changing to shades of purple as you have, a key element is to place your highlighting and arcing energy in specific places.
For instance, as I did in this picture (only power sword within reach), I did dark blue on one side of the sword toward the hilt, while on the other side it was toward the point. Blending is also really key. So invest in a wet pallette if you can.

Made glazes with medium and the "wrong" paints.. used what i had that was close. Altdorf guard blue, warlock purple, mephiston red, wild rider red and averland sunset, then did a semi wet drybrushing of leadbelcher back up to the tip to clean it up a bit. Quite pleased with the result. Id imagine it will look even better with a wash and some weathering around the area

Use one of the countless methods of getting paint off (Simple Green etc). If the primer is black, remember that you can actually scrub all of the primer off and the model still look like it has it on, because it tends to stain miniatures even when stripped.
>>
>>46443993
It was Army Painter Dragon Red, I believe, and after ~2 days of a Simple Green bath, there has only been VERY slight chipping of the paint.

I'll leave it in for a full week and see if that changes but I'm not very hopeful.

Simple green is too mild for primer. You will either have to leave it in there for longer or use a stronger compund (with risk of softening the plastic )

As I said, I don't really consider myself a professional yet, so I'm not really sure on what advice I can give. I got into 40k in the summer of 2013, intending to build an Ork army, as kustomised as possible. I started slow, with simple conversions, swaps and a bit of plasticard here and there and just kept expanding experimenting. Tried simple casting, then greenstuff, etc. eventually making more and more complex stuff.

I guess you should just start small with simple things and small additions to existing minis and go from there. Once you get comfortable with something, try to push yourself to try something new on the next model. Hell, my first greenstuff was just gap filling and then some simple straps.

Also reposting the trukk. And 4chan still breaks my colours.

I did some looking and it turns out their heads and gasmask tubes are all part of the model rather than separate bits, so that might be problematic. But hey, if push comes to shove I'll just grab some helmeted heads, bog-standard/Cadian IG and some greenstuff.

>>46446158
Well, i know it would a be a troublesome method of doing it, you could get some recast steel legion figures and use their heads+ a small bit of greenstuff to make a bigger rim and making the ... arch thingy along the top

Hi guys, working on the first of hopefully not to many knights for my admech/mechanicum force. He's and ex freeblade from a dead knight house that took up the mantle of the mechanicum whilst keeping his identity. I wanted to have a heraldry that stands out in comparison to the soon to stand out purple.

Your heraldry on the tilting shield would benefit from using masking tape to get a clean line, and from thinning your paint to avoid visible brushmarks.

Very nice.

I need to work on taking it slowly like this. I get very impatient and rush ahead.

Like today, I actually managed to do a good base coat for once and I ruined it by rushing right into the layer paints.

If we're going all-out with the Le Poilu aesthetic, having a couple of Steel Legion for flavor would be fine, but they French didn't often not have their coats buttoned back. It's one of the trademarks. Obviously you could probably saw the coats up a bit and slap some greenstuff on there to combat that issue, but I think it might be a bit too much work.

The heads would work fairly well for it, though. Goggles notwithstanding.

Well i was talking about just using the heads from the steel legion, and putting them on death korps bodies.
And of course, shave off the goggles and aquilas.
>>
>>46446763
Wouldn't it be way easier to just use historical miniature heads?
>>
>>46446763

Oh, well! The heads are the easy part. West Wind sells Adrian helmeted, gasmask wearing heads that should fit Death Korps bodies, and I can find non-masked heads as well should I want those. My reservation mostly comes from the fact that you have to saw their heads off as well as their gasmask tubing; so really it's just me concerned I'd absolutely fuckin' botch it and cleave through their collars and torsos.

That being said, I like the idea more and more. Might have to go searching around for some cheap-ish Death Korps to decapitate to try it out.
>>
>>46441932
Always add dags, anon. Make some little similar sized triangles and glue them on in rows on the more bare patches. Rivets are a necessity, but a model still looks bare with just them them.
>>
>>46439830
What I do for my power weapons is I paint it with my silver/steel color than I use a wash paint over it to give it the tint of the color I wanted. For example I want the sword to look like it's got a blue glow to it I use Guilliman Blue from the GW paints, and I like how it looks.

I know there are way better ways to do it that look much better but this is simple enough that I can't fuck it up and it looks okay.

This Captcha picture choosing shit is literally digital cancer. I was once stuck on it for a minute because he tried to tell me that there were, in fact, only four squares with a street sign in it.

Anyway, back on topic; I wouldn't want to give them -too- many gasmasks, so it wouldn't be all-out "Mort Corps of Guerre". Well. It -would-, but they have to have beards mixed in there, or they simply aren't Le Poilu, are they? Gasmasks are great and all but they don't really let you show off that 'barbu', yo'. Could go with Gripping Beast's French heads, but I'm not sure how many have beards as opposed to mustaches the size of Belgium.

So, uh. Anyone have a tutorial on greenstuffing beards?

Done except for basing (obviously), but that can be tomorrow's thing.

Some parts I'm happy with, some I'm not. Gotta keep practicing freehand, and I think I'll pick up some more brassy paints as the copper on the bolter isn't that different to the gold- there's a difference, but it's probably too subtle.

Happy with the cingulum (crotch-danglers), the various gold wings, and the laurel wreath.

isopropyl alcohol removes paint but not primer in less than 5 minutes without harming plastic. You can get in it your grocery store near the medical supplies.

so be very careful to make sure the primer goes on good

then paint

then give it a bath

then paint again, and bathe again

until you are satisfied

just gotta git gud at it. Spray from further in multiple coats. Always start the spray away from the miniature and sweep.
>>
>>46448056
shake the can a lot, spray about 12" away, make sure it isn't too hot, too cold, too windy, or too humid. Make sure to spray from multiple angles and two thin sprays is better than one thick one.

GW spray primer is really particular about its usage for some reason.

If using brush on primer just make sure coat evenly and not too thick. Also don't miss spots or it will be very visible.

If you keep at it, it shouldn't take long: I only picked up a brush again after about 7 years out of the hobby this January.
This is just a not-a-total-moron painter taking their time on a model.
Fine-tipped brushes, thinned paints and a lot of time are the tips I can give you, although I also watched a crap-ton of painting videos on YouTube.
I particularly enjoy Doctor Faust's Painting Clinic.

That said, my Sternguard are all still on their sprues.
I'm going to give them all character-level attention and they're going helmetless (one will have Sicarius' head), so I foresee those five marines taking quite a while.

I can't entirely recommend >>46448023 - I, at least, have a ton of models that need painting, and when I'm not trying to get something painted so I can field it I try to make each mini better than the one I did before it. Painting something, then stripping it, then painting it again would destroy me, given the time investment per model.

>>46448056
Get better with spray primer.

I mount each subassembly on a stick, and make sure to do very quick passes with the spray.
>Start spraying
>Quickly pass spray over mini once

what I usually do is coat the base in superglue, then sprinkle baking soda on it

the glue hardens really fast after coming into contact with the baking soda. By tilting the base while sprinkling you can create some interesting ripple effects.

also note that it may dry slightly clear, but you'll paint it of course

I've been looking at ghost flames for my death marshals. The paint for that is on it's way also. I've been looking at tutorials so maybe this will be helpful to you also?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T86-A0aSbI

There's also one for doing green flames on this. I think the effect is nice but it's really bright, I may add in a darker blue for the tips though I'm unsure. My dusters and hats are all Spanish inquisition red, don't want it to be too loud. Though the darker tips may help with that? I guess I'll find out.

I'd like to hear how your experiments go, if you'd like to share.
>>
>>46453976
Additionally- did you read the photo guide in the OP? This photo makes it really hard to even see the texture.
And what are you taking photos with, a webcam?

For further tips, I don't know why you're skipping around between colours- it looks like you did the red on one area, then the gold on that area, without finishing the red on other parts of the mini.
For a mini like that, I reckon you'd be best doing all the skin (obviously you stopped to ask about washes), then all the red, all the gold, and after that you can skip around between paints to do the details.

Do you have a pic?

For white walls I'd look at drybrushing Celestra Grey into Ulthuan- they're cool greys, and Ulthuan is very close to white. Actual white should probably be saved for any details you really want to stand out.

If you're going to wash, I'd thin Nuln Oil with some medium and get a big old brush.
Dependent on how textured the walls are, you might get some splotches on large flat areas, but drybrushing over that should blend it in so it's just a bit of colour variation.

can anyone tell me how to fix up his eye? i had it a nice red before i did my washes, but theyve dulled it, and i'm scared of trying to dab a new layer of paint in there.
>>
>>46455590

Ok senpai

next time
>>
>>46455660
Get small brush.

Repaint eye.
>>
>>46453505

Front parts are a plasma pistol with the very tip cut off, back is from a bolter. Copious greenstuff. It needs a bit more work to tie it all together a bit better.

>>46453527

That's what I'm going for, so I'm mightily heartened to hear that it comes across. I got most of the way done, and then got distracted painting a contemptor. I need to get better at finishing projects off before I start the next one.
>>
>>46455660
that's the problem with washes, it's hard to fix up anything around it since any mistake is a pain to hide

you could try masking the area around the eye with masking tape or a thin piece of blu-tak and repainting it?

WIP terrain. Supposed to be a kind of war memorial.

Thinking black marble for the pillar, white marble on the skull, with brass or copper details.

How would you describe your process while working on this?

Gives me a John Blanche vibe, interested to see how it turns out.

Stupid question of the day:
What do you use for pins? Just a bent paper clip or wire coat hanger?
>>
>>46456682
>Got old floppy drive holder from friend, use as stairs for Necromunda.
>Found big skull in friend's bitbox
>Figure it would be a cool monument
>Figure it would look cooler on top of huge stairwell
>Figure it would also be useful to have stairs themselves too
>Cut up piece of old plastic piping and pad with GS
>Get plasticard for base
>Found flags to make it look more like an actual monument
>Glue the "stairs" open
>Smash together
>???
>Profit?

Didn't even notice the satanic numbers, heh.

>Just a bent paper clip or wire coat hanger?

Paper clips are about the right size for man (or Space Marine) sized models at 28mm scale.
>>
>>46455274

Yep, >>46455310 has it right. It's from the Paladin Retributors set; a friend of mine had a spare, since he was building them as the ones with the sword-stave things instead. The skull and square-spiral detailing is Green Stuff, and the cable is a short length of guitar wire bent into shape.
>>
>>46456813

Also, forgot to mention, the white plate on the top with the monument comes of, to just give you a long stairwell.

Paper clips. I can imagine a situation when you would need coat hanger for something couple centimeters in size, but it's not a nice picture.

Is it worth learning to paint with an airbrush asap or should I learn how to get the effects I want with a hand brush first?
I want those gradients and metallic sheens but I'm still relatively new to painting
>>
>>46457144
You're not going to get airbrush effects out of a normal brush.

That said, you have a lot of training ahead of you to get good with the normal brush, and you need that to ever be good.

A decent airbrush setup ain't cheap either.

>>
>>46456660
remove the banners. they are too stiff on the stairs and yet still look as if they were blowing in the wind standing straight.
You'd be better served scultping your own banners with green stuff so you can drap them over the steps.
Looking great otherwise!
>>
>>46456799
wire coat hanger? lol, what are you pinning, small children?
>>
>>46457831
I've used similar gauge for pinning dreads and stuff to bases, but yeah, for regular use that's total overkill.

First thing I thought of when he said coat hanger was this beast. I've never actually seen the sprues, though, so I don't know how necessary pinning would even be.

... and then there's Citadel's old "Chicken Dragon".

The banners are supposed to go on the plinths on the top. I've just got to drill holes so they're flush, so they're not supposed to be draped across the stairs.

Heyho begginner here again, meant to post this a while ago but forgot about it, this is my progress so far, i know its pretty scrubby but yeah still my first mini in ever.

also thanks to the guys who told me to contact GW at my problem with the leadbelcher paint, i got them to send me a new pot for free that should arrive in the next days
>>
>>46458140
Try to avoid getting tiny bits of hair on your mini, it looks super nasty.

I'd paint the bottom of the shoulderpads gold as well as the rim.
>>
>>46458113
Presumably it's a FW airbrush paint.

>>46458140
That's pretty good for a beginner. The paint is a bit thick, there seems to be some paint where it shouldn't be on the shoulder trim and the whole thing needs some depths with highlights and shades, but it's not bad for a beginner. Some more colours, a few washes, some nice edge highlights and you're golden.

Try to keep hair away from the mini though.
