Opinions? I'll probably try to do some more details, but I'm not confident in my abilities to pain anything smaller than what I already did
>>

I like the purple, but you need some other color on the suit itself to break it up.
>>

yeah, i was thinking that. Probably a darker purple, maybe black. I'll have to go buy it.

Smooth the red a bit on that round area, and add a second color. Black seems like a good choice to break up the monotony of the purple wash look. Clean up the grey on the railrifle itself, it looks really messy and rushed. You should highlight most of the model from the top down so that it accents the hard angles of the battlesuits overall form. Black would be a good secondary for the circle on the rifle, it would direct a lot of attention to the weapon itself and make it look more deadly.

The wash on the armour is good, but unimpressive because it has no focal point. you should take time to paint your models maturely and base them because it makes them stand out. They're part of a squad, an army and ultimately overall aesthetic. >>46406377 is right in that the color needs breaks and points of rest on the model.

>>46406425
Eldar looks good with minor highlights. Especially when the overall visual is clean and unified. You've a good clean look but a highlight is needed to drive the point look home. Its good, but it could be better, especially on the highlights of the pilots seat. It looks sort of inconsistent on the higher line of the chair because you're rushing. I would suggest using same attention to textural consistency to the paint to details, that will make your models a lot better.

It's April Fools.

So, I'm going to buy myself and possibly my baby sister, who's interested in the painting aspect of the game, and the fact that she'd be able to play something with her big brother, the Start Collecting! Necrons boxes.

These will be my first foray into the game, and I'll be buying the Codex as well as the Rulebook. I do have them as pdfs on my phone, but I'd like to have the physical books anyways.

She's thinking of maybe doing the paint scheme on the tutorial videos that Duncan did, but I want to try something else.

I'm thinking maybe something along the lines of a deep, dark purple as a secondary or tertiary color, most likely as an accent on my Overlord, but I don't know what I want to do as my other colors as I don't want to do the basic metal for their bodies.

Could you help me out? I'd like to know what citadel paints I'd need, and what colors would go well with eachother.

I am still doing the standard greens and black for the weapons.

I'd like to know what purple(s) this is, as this is what I'd like to use for my accent color. I'd probably replace the gold with this purple on my Necrons.
>>
>>46407154
Looks like genestealer purple, with some white mixed in for the most extreme edge highlights.

those look like they've been painted as gems, though, so the bulk of the tabard's bits are black or something close to it.
>>
>>46407422
You seem to be right. I think I'll make the bodies black, and use the purple as a highlight color.

But that leaves me wondering what colors to use as my Dynasty colors, say for the shoulders, and what to use for the Overlords crown and cape and such.

What goes well with black and purple, other than green, which I will use as the standard paint scheme uses it, do you know?

Honestly, I think I'll just use an inverted Sautekh(?) color scheme, with the gold/copper for the body, and the silver for the rest. Greens go as normal.

That way I'll save money on paints.
>>
>>46400501
Looks good! Smart buys.. I would make a wet pallet by cutting up a sponge (can be dishwasher type) and snug fitting it in a container. Add some toilet paper on top and then a final baking paper layer which you put the paint on so you can mix and properly thin your paint. You can swap the baking paper when it's full. For orks I would go for 3 models per paint street. Expect about 3 drop of green Vallejo and then dip your brush in water and make a small pool about 1 water drop size next to the green.. Then mix it together. Do yourself a favor and paint 3 orks only
green then do a wash and post pics here so we can tell u if you need to thin further.

If it's wet, you can dab it off with a paper towel. If not, you can cover it with another layer of paint.

If you fuck up immensely, you can use paint stripper, but that's a whole process

I've just bought a bunch of Seraphim from ebay and I want to fix their horrible fucking bases. I'm currently considering either chopping up a bunch of the small transparent flying sticks and replacing the metal bit with them or making rocks and shit out of cork and attaching one foot to those.
My main worry with the transparent sticks is that I'd have to pin them to get a decent join and that you'd be able to see the pin through the sticks themselves, while I'm afraid that the rock idea would make them look excessively dynamic and goofy.

What would you guys recommend?

Yeah, that's bad enough as a space wolf player. Chaos stuff can only add to the problem.

I kind of wish that there were some more plain bits in the space wolf pack to balance things out.

With my Blood Claws, I purposely used mostly space marine bodies and chainswords so make them look more boring as they are the new recruits and wouldn't have had a chance to smother themselves in glue and jump into the trinket vault in The Fang yet.

Hey, I need your suggestions and opinions folks!
Long time ago I painted my Slann in pic related scheme. However I find the scheme too simple and flat looking. So I was thinking on cleaning it and painting it on a different scheme to resemble Abe Sapien from Hellboy or the Na'vi from James Cameron's avatar.

My lizardmen arm it's a host of tepok so their colors are blue and purple.

Please, suggest me and give me your opinions. The old ones will give you blessings for you to paint better if you do so.
>>

I like the scheme it's clean, has good contrast and your brushwork looks pretty darn good. Tried giving purple pepe some tattoos for dramatic effect?
If you really dislike the scheme and are set on changing it look up the azure poison dart frog. It's a crowd pleaser.

Dwalin so far, to be honest, i'm not massively impressed with my paintjob thus far. The skirt and chest armour seems off.

Using only washes to paint them works too. Some people like to paint their horde armies like that.

For example you start with a yellow/brown basecoat with orks, wash the skin green, paint the metals and then just wash the rest with a few browns and blacks.

i tend to use the gems method and just apply that to the shape, so if it was a more square area it'll be the same look, instead going along the bottom and left (or right depending on which direction you want the light to be coming from) side with the lighter highlighting and the white reflection mark in the dark corner

first time painter here

Is it easier/better to assemble then paint or paint then assemble? I have a feeling with my inexperienced hands this is going to be exceptionally difficult having been assembled already.

pic related
>>
>>46419046
I typically assemble the body and legs first, and perhaps attach the head as well. But I tend to leave off the arms, packs, etc so that they don't block my ability to paint.
>>
>>46414183
Well the GK terminator model is a good base. Add in a different head and some inqusitioral icons and your done.
>>
>>46419046

If you're looking for super high quality on all your parts, you should paint then assemble. You can assemble some parts together (torso/head for example, are usually okay) if they don't obstruct each other that much. Assembling it all first usually means there's a couple of areas you just can't reach to paint well. So while you can get away with it if you're not being picky and just want tabletop quality, it's not recommended.
>>
>>46419046
Depends entirely on the model and your preference, some people can deal with knowing certain hard to see parts arent painted.

I cant, I know its there, because I didnt paint it and it drives me up the wall.

I prefer to assemble most of the body and leave the arms for example.

Best to remove mold lines, dry-fit and then glue pieces that wont keep you from panting other parts of the model.

Just make sure so keep paint and primer of the place's you're going to glue as it weaken the bond a lot.

Is there any point in buying model glue or can I just go to a grocery store and get some super glue
>>
>>46420153
it's the same, chemically, and i use loctite gel for models, since it's way better and easier to control
>>
>>46420153
super glue is fine for metal and resin.
for plastic i'd use a plastic cement.
>>
>>46420153

You can use super glue. You HAVE to use super glue if you have metal or resin parts.
>>
>>46420153
Super-glue is in some ways a little more brittle, plastic glue (what you mean with model glue I imagine), literally fuses the plastic pieces together, it's quite a sturdy bond, though it takes longer to set.

However, if you're working with anything that isn't hard plastic (ie. resin, metal), then super-glue is your best option.
>>
>>46420354
>Super-glue is in some ways a little more brittle

You can buy certain gels with dots inside it like Gorilla Super Glue that solve the brittle problem. They are more flexible and also resistant to low and high temperatures for people needing to glue things in cold or hot places. But this also eliminates the freezer trick.

It still won't be as concrete as plastic glue though, which is perfectly fine by me.

Superglue brand superglue gel.

You'll thank me later.

Plastic cement has a more permanent bond since it melts the plastic together, but that also means if you fuck up you cannot retry without damaging things or slowly and carefully sawing the part off.

Superglue brand superglue gel is a great balance of strength, controlability, cleanliness, and ease. It's also very inexpensive and comes in packages of several smaller tubes instead of a single larger one, making application easier to control. Just be sure to gently squeeze, since it's a tube and thus will "well" if there's pressure.

Also it doesn't fucking dry up in the nozzle, unlike many other superglues. So if you DO have welling you can just quickly wipe the nozzle and put a lid on it, and it will not be a problem to open later. (Unlike GW and zapagap bottles, which caps do not actually seal the nozzle.)

>>46422375
>I need to get some paint thinner I reckon, doing it with water just makes it go all weird and pooley, unless im overdoing it

That's water thinning allright.

There's 3 sorts of thinning.

Medium which thins the colour, making it more translucent, but as thick as normal.

Flow enhancer which makes it flow better making for thinner layers.

Water does both, but when surface tension reaches critical mass it goes from a good thing to a fucking mess.
>>
>>46422337
I think it looks pretty good, mate

my suggestions?
paint the studs silver (the ones on his leg, arm, helmet)
give his chest orb the same red as the spheres on his gun
ditch the eye OSL, it muddies up what should be a focal point

Your edge highlighting is on point. Grunts being kinda bland is honestly not a bad thing, since it means you can add extra spot colours to make your veterans stand out.

Blue lenses don't really stand out against the surrounding silver and purple.'
Black doesn't add to the model, just acts as dead space.
Backpack looks rather messy, like you droppes a blob of purple paint on it, though the image is somewhat out of focus as well.
Metal pats could use a wash for some added depth, looks flat as it.
With the gun barrel i can't tell if's it an attempt a a wash, sloppy work or if the gold paint is seperating

Also, 5 huge pictures with only 15% being the model is a waste of bandwith even with unlimited data.
Crop, resize and collage, make the effort.

I've heard a few anons mention brake fluid, which will break down plastic if you leave it soaking too long apparently. I've also heard good things about (pic related).

I use Simple Green but...

I'm just going back to Chaos Black, fuck it.

>hey, these really look like Kromlech's style
>check their store
>they're right there

Shit man, didn't expect a professional sculptor to post in /wip/.
Have you made anything else for Kromlech? I couldn't help but recognize that style of checker pattern, damage on the edges etc.

I'm just about finished with this model now, it's certainly not the best thing i've ever painted but it was fun to work on.
I've got another two of these guys to paint up and i'll probably try some different colours on the next one.

The color isn't bad at all, you just need rust in the recessed areas, and probably want to go over the model again as a whole with a brown / burnt umber wash to bring out more of the recessed areas. Otherwise - Cheetos on bro-ham! ;)

True story: In college a guy in one of my art classes used Gesso (acrylic paint without colored pigment) and painted over a couple of raw eggs to create an interesting 3D surface to paint on. During the showing at the gallery, someone looking at the painting got curious and poked the 'egg' to see if it was real. 3 week old black putrefied egg-goo began leaking out of the face of the painting. The smell was horrific - it cleared the gallery in seconds. The place still smelled of rotten eggs almost 2 weeks later. Food mixed into 'long term' artwork is never a good idea...

Personally, I've found Simple Green superior to both brake fluid and acetone.

Castrol Super Clean (auto parts degreaser) works great and won't harm metal or plastic even if left soaking in the stuff for weeks. Put the minis in a glass jar, soak, and then rinse. You might need to scrub the minis with an old toothbrush while rinsing them. Wear rubber gloves, the degreaser will dry out your skin.

Dot 3 Brake Fluid is NASTY SHIT! It should only be used as a last resort when other methods have failed, and with a great deal of care. Hell, just reading the label on Brake Fluid can damn near give you cancer.

I like it. It's hard to high-light something like that without over doing it. It's definitely a creepy looking critter.

Do I have no choice but to rip the sentinel off and prime the base white to get both bases looking the same after painting?

Have a blog or something to document the progress? Just getting into Malifaux and would be very interested in seeing your journey

get a primer that can be brushed on?
>>
Thinned paints seem to be critical for maintaining detail of miniatures and control of paint.
So, what are the pigment rich paints which enable this? I've heard Reaper has suspender automatically included which can be inconvenient, that GW is low pigment, haven't heard anything about P3 or army painter, Vallejo is spoken of all well, but is it coasting on the reputation of past quality?
Speaking of past glory days, has w&n kept up it's quality? Some posts I've read mentioned significant increases in fraying in late 2000s.
Abby help wound be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, either brush it or use tape to mask the thing off.

Looks good.

If you want more contrast the best thing would be to lighten up the fleshy tabbard, and do a secondary brighter edge highlight on some of the sharper edges.

Finally making progress on my stormsurge today after letting it sit around for months while I decided what to do with it. Lots of work left to do with filling gaps and trying to relocate the rest of the weapons. Also, still trying to decide if I want to buy another pair of legs to give it quad-legs and go full Armored Core.

Do you think the antenna on the top of the head is too much? I was trying to make it look similar to the old metal commander head.
