This is why generals are a stupid idea anyway. This isn't /vg/. If fucking quest threads aren't quarantined to their own board, 40k threads sure as hell shouldn't be shoved into a single general on the board created explicitly to house 40k in addition to other games like M:tG and D&D.

He just got his rulebook and stuff to start the game and is really interested in my Necrons that I am probably going to sell to him. He wanted to practice painting them and came up with the pseudo-Chicago Bears paint job and I gladly let him if it gets me another person to play with.

I have a full reclamation Legion (~50 warriors 2 monoliths 10 Lych then the minimals) the HQs for Orikan Star and an Annihilation Nexus. Really all he would need is a few transports and some wraiths.

Overlord to Obyron were his first to third model.

>Black Legion
I get the logic behind compulsory VotLW, but isn't that why people hate the current Black Legion supplement? The Black Legion recruits from just about anything anyways. Drop making it mandatory and instead consider letting it give a small extra bonus perhaps?

>Word Bearers
Zealot already confers what is functionally the same thing as Fearless, making the benefit of from Mark of Undivided useless. Having one model with Zealot in a unit already grants the buff to the entire unit, making the cost of the Mark an expensive waste of points. Additionally, the only icon units with this mark could take (vengeance) already gives Fearless. I like the idea behind the Dark Councilor, but restricting them to Daemonology with only mastery level 1 seems a tad suicidal (especially since they aren't daemons and any doubles will cause perils). I think you need to step back and retool this Legion's rules in particular. The Word Bearers, fluff wise, make heavy use of cultists and daemons. I think their bonuses could be retooled to reflect that. Perhaps allowing Daemons to deep strike in safely within 6" of an Icon of Vengeance like >>46234908 suggested, or all cultists gaining fearless without needing a Dark Apostle present, or allowing Dark Councilors to only cause perils on two 6's when using Daemonology spells, or something to that effect? Possessed Marines as troops is another idea.

>Alpha Legion
Love it. Sabotage may be a tad bit too strong, but this is probably your most solid Legion.

>Iron Warriors
Havocs as troops needs to be changed. Perhaps allowing Havocs to take an extra heavy weapon instead? I also feel like you should emphasize their use of artillery (like allowing them to bring basilisks) and allow an additional heavy support to be brought if its obliterators.

>Night Lords

>World Eaters
I think you can simplify the rule by saying all units have Hatred: Psykers. I'm a little skeptical of Blood Overfloweth. Maybe lift the restriction on cultists and give them the option to sacrifice a unit of cultists in order to summon a new unit of Bloodletters within 6"? I'd also give Beserkers +1 attack because they currently suck.

>Emperor's Children
I'm fine with this

>Thousand Sons
Straight up make them immune to rolls of Chaos Spawn or taking them at all. Restrict them from taking Possessed Marines and allow them to take cultists (fluff wise Ahriman frequently goes from world to world founding cults). Free spell familiars, Preferred Enemy: Space Wolves, and Mastery 2 Aspiring Sorcerers are great.

>Death Guard
Change the name of the flamer to Bile Spewer and I can dig it.

I'm unfamiliar with the Red Corsairs or minor cults so I'll stop here.

Wanted a quicker and more aggressive army so when I settled on Loyalists and started reading about various chapters I quickly favored the Dark Angels.
Everyone spouts off about muh heresy memes but I prefer the Legion building aspect that isn't usually seen.
Sure everyone has successors but they don't do it like DA do.
Come the end time I hope that the Dark Angels unite under the banner of the First Legion and find themselves being the only ones who were ready for such a thing. They can go either way for all I care though I also prefer to think that Lion was the Heretic and Luther the Loyalist, come at me.

It also makes arguments for my stuff being OP a lot harder to make.

With one particular exception, Guard aren't good because they have some OP special snowflake unit you bring one of and it wrecks everything the enemy has.

No, they win because you brought workhorse tanks, well-trained men who follow orders, and lots and lots and lots of guns, and you used them all together like a proper commander.
>>

pic related is when my Ultramarine ally and I 2v1s CSM and I had to leave and then he couldn't handle the CSM by himself and got slaughtered.(even though we started with double the points and I took out a fair amount of shit before I had to go).
The picture is how some of the "fluffier(?)" players write their batreps.

>>46238310
chaos space marines

my more recent models have more in the flavor of renegade marine than chaos marine, in part because I like the narrative of these kinds of warbands and in part because I can get far nicer models to represent them.

My current force are outcasts from a unimportant chapter who've turned to piracy and recruited a sizeable human force to support themselves. Fluff wise, that sort of means most, if not all, of the marines in the warband are on the table every game. I pretend they don't lose as often as they actually do.

IG. In a galaxy with people who could easilyu be mistaken for tanks, their maniacle laughter fueled brothers, gundams, rapist elvs, wizard space elves, robot egyptian terminators, cocky uruk-hai, and locusts that eat entire planets I like the idea of the common man who fights without super powers. He fights for a home and family that he will never see again, for a god that has not been seen in ten thousand years, for a government that he -knows- values him less than the flashlight and cardboard box that he prays will protect him. The common man who dies by the billion. The common man who sleeps in the mud of a million worlds without the praise of the demi-god Marines. The common man who stares into the greatest and most unfathomable horrors in the galaxy and stands his ground. I play the IG because despite the terrible odds that are stacked against this common man HE WINS. You may breath fire, summon demons, move as fast as sound, and come back from the dead but in the end nothing in the galaxy can stand up to good old human intolerance backed by a sufficient number of guns.

Guard are a VERY top-down army. With the exception of the tank commander unit, who's there mostly so you can have tanks without using a heavy support slot, and and ONE beatstick character, their HQ's are flimsy, sub-100 point units whose job is to sit in the back of the army telling everyone else what to do.

They don't flail about in the front of the army getting stuck in and yelling like an idiot. They stand right at the center of the army, where they're supposed to be, giving the men direction and confidence.

Guard is an army with no heroes. They do their job. That's it.

truth be told the average guardsman, as much crap as they get on the tabletop, are actually amazing soldiers

Think about it. They can be marching around and still hit 50% of their shots. They can suffer the most horrifying losses and only fall back about a third of the time. They are tough enough to shrug off hits from small arms. Even the mighty bolter with is .75 caliber explosive shells or whatever will still fail to wound a guardsmen a third of the time.

>>46238613
>Guard is an army with no heroes
I disagree. Guard is an army full of unsung heroes.

Started out with Necrons way back in 3E. I'd been vaguely interested in 40k and then suddenly a kid at school had a Necron Codex, I read it and thought they were fucking cool. The plastic Warrior kits were impressive (this is back when GW were 'competing' with warped and miscast Tamiya kits and shitting all over them in terms of quality, so $50 felt like money well spent) and big square formations of the bastards looked great and protected you against Phase Out (not that anyone really figured out "pick on his Warriors" until well into 4th Ed).

Picked up Chaos when the infamous 3.5 codex came out. Not for OP builds, I was just getting envious of all the cool conversions, then suddenly there's this Codex of bad-guy Marines with ALL the options you could ever dream of. Infiltrating a 5-man squad with two plasmas was my favorite thing (I never went full ham with Havocs, Troops are cheap and disposable and that let me be brash with them).
>>
>>46238528
Chaos was my first army too. They allow for a lot of creativity
>>46238556
That's pretty poetic. These guard players in here are making me want to buy some guardsmen...
>>46238570

>>46238660
My nigga, though I only have a few to supplement my main force.
>>
>>46238685
Yeah that's when I picked up chaos myself as my first army. That 3.5 dex was something else. It just felt so packed and dare I say chaotic in its very layout. It's like every time I read it I found something new or interesting I wanted to try. Now chaos feels like dinobots and I moved on.
>>
I'd rather be playing Skaven. I chose Tau so that I could kitbash Skaven and Admech then call them an auxiliary.
>>

Guard: One of the best Aesthetics and atmosphere in the entire setting. Lots of variety, you can have two squads from two different planets that look amazingly different, while space marines tend to just be color changes for the most part. And Humanity fuck yeah. STORMTROOPERS.

Eldar: Non-tabletop friend shilled them to me so I got over my Xeno hate and gave them a try, they ended up being pretty fun, and not all of the craftworlds were super snobby. Lots of options for pretty female models without breaking fluff, though can do this with Guard too and just mix out male and female units and ones you can't tell cause of helmets. Able to be more colorful with them without triggering my autism and just appreciate giving them absolutely flamboyant colors like prismatic boba-fett capes on each infantry unit and lots of glowy light effects painted onto the models and soul gems. Pretty good aesthetic of their own, but some units need heavy modifications to not be shit to me. Their psyker powers are fun too and not many armies top them in that area, and you just have to make sure you're not using shit like Telepathy in friendly games. So the army's really grown on me where I used to hate the faction with a passion with lots of cool units.

Tzeentch: Just as Keikaku, spam demons, RNG, colors, ability to go crazy on their art and modeling without worrying about hurting the lore too much. Sadly I probably won't ever actually play them just because they seem a little too much for my friends to want to play against so I don't think we'd have a good time. Maybe that'll change at some point and their codexes get updated and buffed a lot.

with all this talk of armies I may ask well speak again about the two concepts I've considered for a second army

>Inquisitor + Scions
I fear it would actually play too similar to my current army unless I use a lot of transports and larger squad sizes, which are not really what Scions do well at. Also even though I love inquisitors, modelling them and all their warband is rough. That said I've written a bit of a backstory for an inquisitor and have started converting one, regardless of whether I field them or not.

>Crash Dummy Tau
The general idea was to get just boxes of tau and a lot of drones, then paint them orange with black and white checkered patterns and lots of weathering. Maybe convert the ethereal a bit.

Narrative wise I have no idea about this army, but it would play extremely different and something about it is very appealing. I am actually a bit scared at how easy and inexpensive it is to assemble a frightening Tau list

Hmm, maybe it's just me, but if I was some up and coming Shas'ui or Shas'vre I'd spend more time studying Puretide's teachings, or reading up on the cracked imperial codex than learning their ugly, guttural language.

We are each a specific cog in the machine of the Empire. I would no more expect a rifle to act as a scalpel, then I would a Fire Warrior to design a waste management facility.

Quick question, i'm playing my first ever game against my friend this afternoon, 600 points. He's fielding chaos sm and i'm fielding black templars, what the hell do i bring?

i'm thinking either:

hq: chaplain power armour + melta bombs 125

elites: Hammernators 225 pts

troops:

crusader squad: 1 sword brother with powersword and melta bombs, 4 initiates with boltgun + chainsword + 5 initiates with bolters.

crusader squad: 3 initiates with bolters, 1 with power axe and boltgun, 1 with plasma gun and chainsword

Thats 595 or 600 pts i think. Now, should i replace a crusader squad with a venerable dreadnought?

Much obliged and i apologise for the mess

Earth probably. While many are menial builders, the bright ones become engineers and scientists, which is a similar path mentally to becoming a doctor.

So I'm thinking of going ahead and buying some SoB proxies from Raging Heroes.

What do you guys think of this, as far as an army list goes?

2x 5 Battle Sisters (Maybe go for a third or 4th here since the squad size is kind of small)
1x 5 Battle Sisters Command (Sororitas Command Squad)
1x 5 Davidians (Sisters Repentia)
1x Sister Ardanna (Canoness)
1x War Pulpit (Penitent Engine
1x Ascended Sister Erzebel (Living Saint)
1x 5 Icariates (Seraphims)
1x 5 Knights of the Chalice Command (Celestians)
2x Sister Trematta Field Resurectrix (Hospitaliar)

I don't really have much experience with the sister's but I've always wanted to get into them. Can someone who knows what they're talking about tip me off as to if any of their units aren't particularly good? I've heard retributors are kind of a waste compared to Exorcists

you can be a dick and use a lord, overlord, orikan the diviner and lychguard for a squad with 3+/3++ (lychguard)/4++ for characters, 4+ RP all rerolling 1 failed saves death star. Shit is cash and cheesy as fuck.

But yes, put them in a night scythe, they are too slow and everything important my just run away

Mirrorcodex is taboo if you're a citizen of the Tau Empire, since Farsight turned "traitor."
>>
>>46243284
Rules-wise, there's no restriction on anything like that (unless you're playing 30k).

Generally, the amount you should spend on troops depends on your army, to be honest. Some have awful troops so shouldn't waste too many points on them, some have good troops units that it's worth building a decent percentage of the army out of. So, what army do you play/plan on playing?

I wouldn't go too mad on upgrades at 1000 points, you want a decent number of dudes on the field. Especially shitkicker melee HQs, they're normally too expensive at 1000 points.

I know there's no rule on it, I was just looking for best practices. I'm the SoB poster, my current roster looks like this with no upgrades

Most likely going to add an Exorcist as well

Tau education involves implanting didactic modules (microchips containing databases of factual information) into the brains of Tau infants and children, and these include language data. Therefore, almost all Tau can understand and speak languages they might be expected to encounter, including Imperial Gothic. However, while those modules can give information, they cannot impart actual skill, which still requires practice (Water Caste).

Other Castes usually pretend to not understand Imperial Gothic with the hope that the Gue'la et their guard down and say something that the Water Caste could use later on.

The gaz supplement in the op never got updated, probably becase no one wants to pay for the same book with 2 more pages and the green tide removed. White dwarf has the looted wagon, the 2 sanctus reach books have a few formations but not many of them are good.
It's mostly just core codex for us. Some of the gaz formations are still good by themselves though. Bullyboyz plus blitz brigade is a meme army thats pretty good.

Also here's the looted wagon pdf

Chaos: Saw the Dark Vengeance Chosen and loved the idea of highly detailed, customizable champions with their own histories and agendas reflected on armor.

Grey Knights: Loved terminators and the idea of a valiant few psychic guys sacrificing their humanity and personality to protect everyone else.

Skitarii: Spindly little metal men with lots of cool-looking guns and spider tanks were the faction I've been waiting for, didn't much care for the Cult Mechanicus guys.

They look like Sisters who work for Eldar.
>>
>>46243653
How do you figure? I can maybe see that for the daughters of the crucible, who are wearing actual habits, but the regular troops look like power armor nuns to me

Also I have to whore out my personal favorite formation for orks, Mogroks boss boys in the red waagh. 3 big meks, 1 warboss, and a wierdboy. ally in a CAD led by a pain boy and that's a lot of awesome characters with a lot of flexibility. and outflanking a truck full of burnas or tankbustas will ruin a gunlines day.
It is like 500 point after upgrades though.

Dark red and silver detailing for my Chaos marine warband, yellow and red detailing for my Imperial Fists.

>>46243489
My feeling would be some rhinos/immolaters, and flamers/meltaguns, would go a long way. There's plenty of bolters in there, but not a lot else.
>>
>>46243687
Their power armor is sleeker than anything in the Imperium, their helmets are practically pointy, and the wings look like futurey grav tech instead of archaic grav tech.
>>
>>46243578
>>46243689
Much obliged. I know Orks are shitty, it's part of why I stopped playing, but I love the green bastards.
>>
>>46243769
Yep, that's what I was planning on going for, just gotta buy some immolators.

>>46243781
Fair enough, but it's better than paying $80 for 10 sisters.
>>
>>46243781
only the command squad has pointy helmets, the regular sisters have hoods
>>
>>46243808
>Fair enough, but it's better than paying $80 for 10 sisters.
That's true for sure. With the hoods they're fine, but I'd still try to find some kitbash if you decide to go helmets or seraphims/saints.

It was almost cheating against a blood angels army.

Trukk is 30 points

11 front and 11 side means +1 to armour facing is 3.5 points.

Ergo, 37 points.
