It looks more like the now-canon Rakata Prime to me (minus the wrecks everywhere), plus Tython is/was in the Core and the location on the movie map was in the Unknown Regions.
>>
Question, /swg/. If I wanted to learn more about the lore behind starfighters, starships, pilots, etc., what material should I pick up and read?

Essential guides. There's an ultimate dictionary out there as well.

Or you could consult the wook...
>>
>>44303351
You'll want to dig up both the older guides and the "new essential guide to X"; there's some non-overlapping content and the old guides have some errors
>>
If I plan to play Empire, should I buy the original or the TFA X-Wing core set?
>>
>>44303419
General advice in these parts is to get both, but you'll need the TFA for sure if only for the updated damage deck.
>>
>>44303419
One of both might be the ideal.
>>
>>44302641
It makes sense.
If you have a weapon type that requires a massive superstructure, moon-sized, and the problem is that your enemy keeps nailing it with small fighters you don't mount it on a Star Destroyer or leave it floating with no protection because that just makes it worse.

You do the cheapest route; just set the weapon into an existing planet. Its the TIE/LN of Death Stars.

The reason you keep building them?
They work.
You don't stop building aircraft carriers because some enemy fighters blow up the ones you have.

The first Death Star had a massive design flaw. The second didn't, but Sheev decided the only time it would ever be vulnurable would be the time to use it as bait.

Starkiller was extremely powerful, cheaper, forced the highly effective Rebel/Resustance fleet to rely on q ground assault (without natives or a terrain advantage), and in the end accomplished its main goal (blow up the Republic government) first.

They're never going to make any Legends content canon in its entirety again. What's likely is that we'll get references like we have already that puts certain things together in a similar light to what happened in Legends, but isn't completely the same.

So apparently the headquarters of the Resistance is on the other side of the galaxy from the Starkiller base, which is presumably the center of the First Order activities. You'd need to cross through the Republic space to get from one to the other.

Also, Takodana is like 1/4 galactic diameter from Hosnian Prime, partially obscured by the galactic core, yet the explosion is instantly visible on Takodana sky during the day.

So, what was the long term plan with Starkiller base? It feeds on the sun and their second charging sequence clearly shows that they used up all of the sun. So assuming it wasn't destroyed by the Resistance, what was next? Is their weapon now useless? Do they have to go to a new sun some how?

No prob m8.
We don't know, not likely given that JJ said flat-out "The Sith are extinct".
Meaning this is a new Darkside group being built from the ground up although possibly with uncovered teachings (explaining Kylo's knowledge of the old saber design), or an extension of a previous one like the Sisters.

On an unrelated note, some people are theorizing Snoke is tiny like an evil Yoda for pottery reasons.

My money was on a Palpy clone like the novels until I remembered JJ's statement.

Clearly you haven't studied the finger enough yet if you are questioning it, anon.

>We don't know, not likely given that JJ said flat-out "The Sith are extinct".
Anon, that actually has dual possible meanings. The Sith were actually a species in the EU. They went extinct due to interbreeding with human dark jedi and the blood eventually running thin.
>>
>>44304276
So do you think its the sith emperor?

>>

I doubt that's what he meant considering he was answering a question on whether Kylo is a Sith Inquisitor.

JJ relies on gag orders, not wordplay or outright misdirection.
>>
>>44304237
I like Snoke being tiny, it makes his big Wizard of Oz hologram fitting.

I want to see a character who lived through all the current eras of Star Wars canon. You know, blasting droids during Clone Wars at young age, slaugthering Imperials in his adulthood and finally fighting the First Order at old age. Maybe some crossover comic? Something like that

Or better yet, a ultra loyal clone who fought in Clone Wars, Galactic Civil War and the First Order conflict because he's that much of a badass
>>
So somehow, in my utter ignorance I only recently learned that the Visual Dictionary is a thing. Obviously I'm going to get the one for VII, along with the ship cross section book, but I also want to eventually get the dictionaries for the prequels, too.

So I want to come up with a trio of dark jedi/sith that embody Yoda's little speech. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFnFr-DOPf8.

each one embody a different aspect of the dark side (fear, anger, hate) and they'd each get a special force power/gimmick that embodies their aspect and it would also make them corrupted miserable suffering wretches. (bold new territory I know)

I pretty much like the idea of Chronicle of the Gatekeeper's Suljo Warde and his precognition but only the worst outcome ability and how it makes him paranoid and fatalistic to be the fear guy.

Force and Destiny - Chronicles of the Gatekeeper (SWF23).pdf
http://www47.zippyshare.com/v/uiEMYZ6a/file.html

What would be some good ideas for dark side powers with a double edge that would be an apt metaphor for the self destructive qualities of anger and hate?

So, a quirky miniboss squad consisting of The Fear, The Anger and The Hate? Sounds good to me.
Maybe the Fear has some sort of empathic terror projection? Makes everyone around him feel his fear, only he's sort-of used to it and they aren't?
The Hate needs to use lightning, of course.
Maybe The Anger uses the force to enhance his strength and speed and berserker fights barehanded?

Y-Wing isn't too good on its own, it needs other upgrades. Like from the Most Wanted pack for example.

TIE Bomber is better, especially for Captain Jonus. But he buffs other ships with secondary weapons, like the Shuttle or other Bombers. Durable, decent ship regardless and gets better when you expand your collection.

Not bad. Its a collection start rather than optimized minimal purchases though.

Starter ships are great. Nothing wrong with them.

>>44304787
These are pretty great. Is it something you just whipped up or is it based on a character you made for something.
>>
>>44306031
Its not bad, but the factions aren't exactly the same so balanced purchases don't work well.

Rebel ships tend to eat points, and are designed to get a lot of upgrades. That means planned purchases for upgrades you need and ships that compliment each other. They also run on named characters.

Imperial ships cost less points and tend towards numerical superiority. They tend to only need one core named character to lead them, with the rest being scrubs. Upgrades are used much less, and only serve to give you something inportant to your strategy.

The Empire player is probably the one at a disadvantage, while the Rebel player needs more purchases to match what the Empire player will become with only one or two more good ships.

My recommendation: either the regular original trilogy TIE Fighter and/or new movie TIE/fo single ship pack for extra TIE and badass pilots, then a Shuttle. Alternatively, either a TIE Punisher, Defender, or second Bomber. Or you can go with Imperial Aces, but that won't get your Bomber any love.

For Rebel, a single pack original trilogy X-Wing. Then Rebel Aces, Outrider, or Moldy Crow.

So two purchases each to reach a viable 100 point game. One little ship, then either a big ship, a two-ship pack, or a second little ship.

I recommend the TIE/fo Fighter and TIE Defender, and the X-Wing with Rebel Aces.
>>

So TFA for the First Order TIEs, a regular Defender, and Imperial Vets should give me some good stuff overall right?

I love my Y-fus but a TIE swarm just seems fun to play.

Neat. I wouldn't mind a "continuing adventures of the kel dor detective". Hell, if you write well and suck the proper dicks you might even get published.
>>
>>44306698
Yep, that sounds about right.

Defender is actually okay on its own right now (or at least Vessery is due to superb action economy if you can cheerlead TLs), Imp Vets will make it a beast.

Y-wings are a little trickier to get the right upgrades for. Ion Turrets are fine but kind of low damage, BTL-A4 title fixes that but you can only get it in Most Wanted, which is basically the Scum equivalent of a core set (no templates/dice, though). TLT is only on the K-Wing, and the most useful droid, R3-A2, is only in the Rebel Transport

TIE Defenders love to fly off on their own and go with anything, there's not enough info about the new Bomber yet.

Sibgle pack Bomber pilot Captain Jonus should buff both though, he goes with anyone using a lot of Secondary Weapon attacks.

Both starters will just give you some redshirt TIE Fighters, which most Imperial players need regardless of anything else. So you can't go wrong with either but they aren't a massive synergy thing unless building a tught swarm around either Howlrunner or the pilot who's name I forgot that both come in the single TIE packs.

Imperial Aces gives you two souped up TIE Interceptors. They mostly replace the need for regular TIE Fighters. They cost more points bit fly better. I personally don't use them, but almost all Imperial players take them or a regular TIE Fighter swarm. Consider them the alternative to the starter and single pack TIE. You could run both for a swarm and a mini swarm, but then you're not using your Bomber since there's no way you can get all of them into a standard sized game.

Yeah I honestly think the movie could have benefitted from more time, which isn't something I usually say about movies.

Lowest number of ships bought, highest number of purchases used.

I dislike the idea of buying a ship for a card strongly. I know most people do as well.

So I recommend purchases with cards that fit into what you'd play in the same match, or can be rotated out for variety.

I also recommend purchases with the maximum number of cards to support each other. TIE Punisher has great upgrade cards, but needs a lot of support and a lot of people don't like fielding it so I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to actually use it. By contrast the TIE Defender is a great ship with great upgrade cards.

Sure, Punisher gives you better cards and the Phantom is a better ship, but Defender is a good ship with cards to make most of your other ships regardless of choice better. So I recommend it higher.
>>
>>44306881
You mean like they cut a lot of content from Age of Ultron and it STILL feels long and crowded?
>>
>>44306865
Unhinged costs 1 less, which adds up surprisingly fast. Also it's always fun to see enemies react to y-wings behaving like a much faster craft, especially if you give them engine upgrades, you absolute madman.
>>
>>44306895
>room for two and a hyperdrive

yea that was a bit confusing, though it might previously have been cost issues as opposed to space issues.

TIE/ln's are supposed to be super cheap and I thought party of the reason they didn't have a hyperdrive is so people couldn't run off with them.

What's with the "unexplored regions"?

I thought that the whole galaxy was more-or-less explored

>>
>>44307003

Needed some throw-away lines like Phasma commenting on Jakku being where the Empire died and the First Order was born from the treaty, or Leia remarking on the Chaos that will come from the loss of the senate on that planet. Or Poe telling Finn or Rey that's all the forces they have since the New Republic relies on every system having their own Resistance militia to protect their peoples. Or Han finishing a humorous anecdote to Rey about Luke's Jedi mind trick to give her knowledge OF that to try. Or the yellow chick mentioning her base is old Jedi ruins, explaining the Cave thing from her touchibg the lightsaber.

Not too much exposition, just a few quick lines. Too much relied on you reading the books and comics. Leave those for in-deprh explanations.
>>
>>44307003
Not even close.

Blind lightspeed jumps are actually really dangerous, and sublight exploration is too damned slow.

So the 'known galaxy' is actually mostly just a series of relay stations between known safe routes.

There's big money in exploratory astrogation, but it's also really dangerous, because if you don't know your shit and you fuck up your calculations, a manual jump can easily dump your ass into the center of a star or have you hit a planet at FTL speeds which is an unmitigated disaster.
>>
>>44307003
The galaxy is basically collections of big long trade lanes, the boonies near the trade lanes, and beyond that spots on the map that read HERE THERE BE KRAYT DRAGONS.

On the one hand I think the Empire has cooler small ships but the Rebels have cooler big ships. The YT-2400 being my shipfu, how often would it come into play if I went reb? Are larger ships like the Firespray or Decimator required for Imperials?

Single Interceptor pack is okay and has the best Interceptor pilot Soontir Fel, but its cards really only work great for it. Imperial Aces has better Interceptors, but again the upgrades are mostly just for other Interceptors.

If you're like me and prefer basic TIE then there's not much there to consider. Both are great, and Interceptors are usually the preference of the championship players. But they aren't better overall, just a second flavor.

Like I said, Imp Aces and a single Interceptor are probably your alternative to Starter TIE Fighter and a single TIE. Single Interceptor is great too, but the Phantom is probably the better badass ship. Which also only really upgrades itself and goes out hunting by itself.
>>
>>44307144
The Super Dash gives Dash push the limit, an engine upgrade, an Outrider Title, and cannon and crew to flavor. It gives you an extremely maneuverable large, hard to shoot ship that can dodge out of arcs via boosting and barrel rolling across asteroids while dealing up to 4 dice of damage at long range. Probably the most fun large based ship to fly.

Typically he pairs with a couple of mooks or one other named ship that's also been upgraded. I've seen Corran Horn in his E-wing and Jan Ors in her HWK both work-Corran is aggressive, jousting with the enemy as they try to deal with Dash's donut while Jan gives Dash not 4 but 5 dice at long range. I've also had fun cutting down on some of Dash's upgrades and pairing him with two ion y-wings to help keep my health up and enemy's mobility low.

Firespray isn't very good for Imps, its not bad though. Scum & Villainy are the best use of one although if you intend to play both then it minimizes you purchasing.
Decimator is great, not mandatory by any means. Just a bulky and super durable big ship that loves to take Crew upgrades.
Don't sell the Shuttle short, its a fucking heavy gunship and trrop transport that Palpy and Annie used as a limo in the movies.

Hell, nothing is mandatory or useless really, there's just things that are better than others. The way you fly matters much more than your list, not that the list is a complete faceroll mind you.

Depending on your chosen pilot, the Outrider can fly different ways but Dash Rendar is arguablt the best and basically just does donuts through asteroids all over the map and lets the turret do the talking. He does his own thing, so you'll want the rest of your list to stick together as group 2.

Seriously, check the 1d4chan page in OP. Unlike most, its actually a really good guide. Also check Cardboard Dungeon ship reviews on Youtube, they have good insights.

Shuttles are pretty cheap in-universe and in the game, built far more durable than their price has any right making them, and can be armed to the teeth.

They're slow as fuck and turn poorly, but they can perform a complete stop as a maneuver. If you plan your asteroids well and maybe take the card that givex guarenteed damage to any ship that hits them, you can really punish a pursuer. Just remember that the bad maneuvering means you gotta be three turns ahead in planning. Gotta be Sheev.

You're absolutely right, I'm just theorizing that the sf would have such harsh downward arcs to the sides, the enemy fighter would have to be fairly directly below them. I don't think it could be represented with a 360 arc the same way the gun on top of the falcon could.

Well, I just got completely fucked in an Imperial Assault game. I'm the Imperial player and a friend of mine is playing all four rebels (Fenn, Diala, Jyn and Gaarkhan). We were playing the A New Threat story mission, after I won Brushfire by the skin of my teeth.

So, he has Jyn go first. She's got the DL-44 already and Quick as a Whip for a class card. She heads south to attack the Probe Droid there and destroys it in one hit. I use my other Probe Droid to try and attack her, but she uses Quick Draw and destroys it in one hit as well. I'd held off using my Prey Upon Doubt card because I'd worked out the odds of her doing that much damage and they were fairly high, so I didn't expect her to do it twice.

So I've lost two droids and an activation already and it's his turn again. He goes with Gaarkhan and Charges north to attack the elite Probe Droid. He has the Extended Haft on his Vibro-Ax so he can do it without even straining to move. He attacks twice and destroys it.

I manage to save my other Probe Droid, but only by taking pot shots and retreating, but I'm stuck in a corner so I can't do shit.

And that was the beginning of the end for me. My elite Nexu lived for a couple of rounds, but Diala got lucky with the first crate and got a C-1 Commlink. Guess which card was exhausted at the start of round 2.

So yeah, I've never seen such a one sided fight before. Even when I brought the reinforcements into play and some Royal Guards deployed from the Open Groups I didn't stand a chance. My only saving grace is that he dallied about for a round and finished on round 5 instead of round 4, so I got an extra bonus at the mission end.

Then why do they still wear those clunky suits?
>>
>>44309879

I forgot about Kylo's shuttle. I suppose they could do a half-wave with that and Leia's transport.

>>44309911

If the command section isn't ridiculously exposed, is it really an Imperial ship?
>>
>>44309911
D-Day landing craft had their helmsmen kind of raised and exposed and Star Wars is WW2 turned up to 11. Also, landing craft would be shot at from the ground if everything is going the way it should

Yeah, I agree it's stupid but these might be reasons

Because it looks like the pilot's position on the old landing craft from WWII.
Closest I can find is the LCM 3, which was a vehicle lander.
Still, I have to ask why there a gunner's position isn't on the bottom of the craft, since the thing is generally going to approach from above.

>>44309911
Like a TIE pilot would give a shit. They get off on being imperiled.
>>
>>44309941
So if something goes wrong they can still breathe? Also the Tarkin Doctrine if that's still cannon.
>>
Everyone talks about their favorite ships, but what's the worst ship ever?
>>
>>44309941
Because they're smarter than the Rebels/Resistance. If the fighter springs a leak, the TIE pilot will be fine. A X-Wing leaks, your totally awesome ace is going to die.
>>
>>44309941
So they aren't instantly fucked if they get shot? Sealed suit + backup air supply means that you can get picked up assuming you ejected before fireballing.

Don't think the movies ever really touch on the issue, though I certainly remember it coming up in ye olde X-wing games, it was their way of not game-overing you if you died (though depending on the mission you could end up picked up by the opposing faction)

The normal first order TIE fighters are just the old ones but slightly better, its the two seater version that has life support and a hyperdrive.

I think I read somewhere in a something from the new canon - maybe Ultimate Star Wars but I don't know - that said they wear suits because their ships don't have shields so they're more likely to spring a leak.

Granted, the shields on Rebel ships don't really help them survive more than your average TIE so they should technically wear suits in the Rebellion as well; yet they don't because ultimately it comes to a stylistic choice by the moviemakers. Faceless evil drones versus heroic face-visible freedom fighters.

In X-Wing, is a YT-1300 ever a match for four TIE/ln, or can it at least survive six rounds evading them?

I ask because I was talking about replacing the clunky EotE ship combat rules with a game of X-Wing, but my players say it would be way too hard for their YT-1300 to survive.

K-wing is pretty fuckin bad
>>
>>44310203
Depends greatly on upgrades chosen and player skill on both sides.

But yes, its very feasible.
>>
>>44310201
Standard TIE's, yes, are still without shields.
The two-seaters are a Special Forces variant that does have shields, life-support and a hyperdrive in addition to extra armament in the form of the turreted lasers and missiles/torpedoes.
Still, there's a reason real pilots who fly near the edges of space wear full enclosed and protected suits: shit happens. It's best to be prepared.

I like this ship a lot. Shame there's no hyperdrive.

I did get that vibe when i watched them at the movie, but at least i would have made it so the pilot could sit to decrease the height of that cockpit.

Nonetheless, excluding the cockpit issue, i like the design.

Just take any of the FFG systems, file the serial numbers of the ships and you're good to go.
