repost as I missed the new thread:

As someone who has a pretty encyclopaedic knowledge of Star Wars I have to say my favourite part of TFA was all the shit that I had no idea what it was. I'm almost holding off diving into the visual dictionary books because right now I how I was when I was 8. There is the alien that looks like a goat thing or the droid that has a microphone face. I don't know their rich lore or names or anything and there's a purity to that.

That said I wouldn't mind a few more familiar aliens as set dressing in the other films but it really hammered home that the universe is fucking huge.

I like the idea behind this landing ship.

It's for when you need as many viable field command posts landed as quickly as possible. It functions as a command post all on its own and carries one of these http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/PX-4_Mobile_Command_Baseplus two Chariot LAVs and 12 speederbikes plus troops as escort.

Is Captain Phasma the best gril from the new movie?
>>
Ya know what I never got as a Star Wars fan? Why everyone shits in the tie fighter.

>muh hyperdrive
Yeah, well it still clearly can fly around a solar system. Doctrinally this makes sense, the empire doesn't need ties to go to hyperspace- if they need to go to hyperspace they can just bring a Gozanti, or if it's something you are trying to ambush, bring a damn star destroyer and see how that fight goes. It's not like the empire has to do guerilla hit and runs, and clearly they can deploy fighters fast, so it's not like these are big issues that mandate a hyperdrive.

>muh air
Yeah, I would rather not trust my like to there not being a hull breach somewhere, especially in a combat fighter. Cockpit breach on an Xwing? Guess what, you're done. Cracked glass on tie? Fighter is fine, just send it to maintenance.

>muh torpedoes
This is valid, but you very rarely see AA missiles in Star Wars anyway.

>muh shields
We have seen plenty of starfighter battles, shields rarely seem to help significantly unless the plot commands it (see ANH R2D2 getting trashed, vs that one guy who takes a glancing hit and crashed). Star Wars weapons are extremely dangerous, though examples are inconsistent. Even in Star Wars rebels we see larger ships get regularly getting severe damage from small ships, so I don't think the shields argument is actually a strong one.

Idk my autism is hitting with the booze, I just think the tie fighter has an ill-deserved reputation. Doctrinally it makes sense for an army to have a fighter that needs a base or carrier, imagine if the Americans made an F-35 fighter that could fly around the world. That would be expensive and stupid, no need for that when they can deploy them from any number of bases or carriers.

Craig was an Imperial officer, but I didn't see him. If I had to hazard a guess, he was the one Lieutenant yelling at the general as he started to run away.

It's why I like the shield system in FFG, it feels like it represents what you actually see in star wars media.

First time coming to this general, and I know you guys probably get this question a billion times so I apologize in advance. What system would be best for running a SW game that incorporates a mix of Jedi, smugglers, Sith, and troopers as player options?

I'm basically the resident "rules guy" in our group so they asked to me to find a good system for a SW game they want to start. From what I can see, the Fantasy Flight games all use the same system and can probably just be mashed together, but I'm not sure how the balance works out when you mix stuff like Force and Destiny with Edge of the Empire. People seem to want to play a mix of things, so not everyone wants to be a Jedi, or a smuggler, or a soldier, etc.

I've literally never touched SW RPGs before so I have no idea what I'm getting in to. Our group has only played D&D, Shadowrun, Mouse Guard, and Call of Cthulhu.

If I were to go with "Trooper Focused" Daala as a reason for her lack of admiralling skill should she have been closer to Rom Mohc than Tarkin?
>>
>>44294591

Running a mixed game right now, in mechanical terms, the game roughly balances.

Yeah, sure, if your FS PC dumps all his XP into move, he can try and juggle star destroyers in orbit - but that means he dumped all his XP in it, and everybody is on the same XP curve, so the other PCs will easily been able to sink XP into their careers and skills, so they can do stuff like shoot the wings off a space-fly or out-fly TIE Fighters in tub-of-junk tramp freighters, etc. Due to the nature of the Force, FS characters top out probably more powerful, but again, they have to spread their XP around a lot to do it.

My experience with Mouse Guard is limited, but you'll probably find FFG's system most like that, with a drop of say standard RPG qualities from shit like DnD we all have. It's a dice pool (using unique dice) which tends to have narrative consequences to success and failure so you rarely roll a binary state. But instead of static opposition, you roll vs negative quality dice appropriate to the task. It'll take a while to wrap your head around the results (and the book isn't always helpful in that regard) but it runs pretty well once you have it.

Also, if you're in for Starfighters, the combat is a bit tchy, you might want to consider looking at some of the house rules.
>>
>>44294591
FFG should work for exactly what you want. Nobody is able to outshine anybody else at what they do. There's no pesky Use The Force role to take over the pilot's job, for example.

You might want to make a few houserules if you're going to have Sith in the party, because I think low Morality takes control of the character away or something, but other than that go nuts, dude.
>inb4 you can't have Jedi and Sith working together this isn't D&D
>>44294601
Isn't Mohc more focused on SUPERSCIENCE than actual troops? But if you want to, sure.
You could also do General Veers
>>
>>44294751

Technically I don't think Morality forces loss of control of a PC, just a Dark Side PC will suffer lower strain threshold and give the GM more Dark Side Destiny to work with. That, and the nature of morality penalties means that in general you'll probably trend to pull down the rest of your party - gives them motivation to try and redeem you.

Or just shank you and move on with their lives, depends who you ride with.
>>
>>44294822
Ah, see I haven't played around with Force and Destiny so I don't know from mechanics much.
I thought it would kind of work like what I hear the old d6 Star Wars does where if you fall you lose the character by RAW.
>>
>>44294734
That's good to know, our group doesn't really have a problem with "power" gaps between PCs, quite often someone ends up playing a complete non-combat support character. I just want to make sure no one gets outshined in their own role by someone else. Starship combat is something I'm personally really interested in, so I'll definitely do some research on the rules and potential house rules.

>>44294751
I don't think we were planning on doing Jedi and Sith in the same party, but we'd like the potential for a "evil" party to be there or maybe a "secretly Sith" party member. The guy who is going to be running the game is pretty hardcore into Star Wars, so I doubt he'll let any big inconsistencies fly.
>>
>>44294751
Mohc Was SUPERSCIENCE enough to get her assigned to the Maw.

But he was also the Senator Armstrong of Star Wars.

COMBAT EXOSKELETONS SON.

HE PUNCHED BATTLE DROIDS FOR FUN.
>>
>>44294862

Support characters actually work really well (especially in starship combat) in this system, though obviously carrying a gun or a baton just in case doesn't hurt.

The FFG system really tries to emulate a lot of the OT, and also now leaning a little toward the Rebels show feel. One medium freighter vs some TIEs and the like works pretty good, has some cinema to it, but not likely to kill the PCs (that's what Scum Y-Wings are for). Medium ships on medium ships plays okay, and generally, playing as fighters vs a single capital target also seems to work okay. I haven't gotten my own group up to capital on capital ship combat yet. But RAW, dogfighting is real hairy, it's very easy to get blown out of the sky in a single strike - which while it kind of lends itself to how the OT looks doesn't always make it a fun distinction for a PC. Especially given that in say, AoR you can start play working out of Y-Wings.

The problem with FFG dogfighting is that a top ace doesn't have a noticing difference in dodge chances VS a green rookie; the simplist fix would be to add pilot skill as black/purple dice to attack rolls.
Otherwise, it's feasibility lethal. It's issue is that it doesn't account for pilot skill

It's not really fair to say that the Rebels cartoon gives access to the B-Wing 5 BBY. It's just the singular (flawed) prototype at that stage, which then they ship off to Slayn & Korpil to mass produce.

In Legends, the "Spearhead" was rolling around years before Endor to fill the A-Wing role in vidya (and the Rebels A-Wings have slightly different design aesthetics), and the X-Wing wasn't introduced until 1 BBY at Turkana.

>>
>>44296163
True that 1 prototype doesn't equal rolling around everywhere, but it is fully researched by 5 BBY, or at least very nearly done. Only questions left is when the X-wing and the A-wing falls on that timeline.
>>
>>44296163
>>44296043

Also, NuCanon A-Wings are a Kuat Systems Engineering project, apparently. Which, retroactively makes sense, looking at the various Jedi fighters, so I'd guess we'll probably end up with a "This was Kuat's attempt to win the TIE contract, which went to Sienar. Or maybe it was going to be the design, but then Seinar scooped those engineers.

And A-Wings canonically hold concussion missiles, but the Phoenix Squadron pilots have never once attempted a missile attack.

Reposting this from the Weekend Quest Discussion Thread,

I've been kicking around the idea of a Star Wars quest featuring high adventure with no Force-sensitive main characters that follows six crewmates on a freighter (pic related), with the catch being that the players can, at any time, switch between any member of the crew and the primary perspective would then change to that character. They could work multiple angles of a job/mission by switching to these characters, and each would feature a distinct personality, class and species with differing skills, equipment and experience.

What do you think?

Building off this, perhaps have it as a modified CYOA? Like work out how each character thinks or values or whatever and then present choices in situations that fit that. This should help to curb any tendency to play every character the same.
Or not, I dunno. I don't know how much work that would be.
>>
>>44296544
>>44296586

I would be very adament about establishing the individual character's personality and would reward actively playing to that character's motivations and personality traits. Each character would also be written slightly different from their perspective. The droid, for example, would be a very dry and methodically-written kind of view and his options would be presented as such, whereas a more naive character would be written in a more bubbly style and would have options that would differ from other characters if they were in the same situation.

That's what I would really try hard for, anyway.

here's the problem: /tgq/ group knows how to play one character at the absolute limit, and that's snarkbub the waifu hunter. multiple characters will do nothing to attenuate this; let them do it and you will get multiple characters who cannot do any damn thing but waifu whatever female/feminine characters are handy; more than one "PC" will inevitably lead to them going for more than one FNPC for waifu time without the typical /tg/ quest waifu wars

I couldn't tell my fiancee this after we saw TFA, but I had to really concentrate on not crying when I learned R2 just got depressed and shutdown for 15 years after Luke left, I honestly felt something in my heart.
>>
>>44296627

Well, I have a current quest that has managed to mostly, not perfectly avoid constant waifu-warring. I think I could pull it off. But I've been in a big Star Wars mood these last few months and I've been thinking about running a quest with the character-switch mechanic.

did you have one obvious waifu at the start so that the /tgq/ group would "BEST GIRL TO THE DEATH" over her?
or are you running a quest that's 2edgy4waifus?
>>
>>44296654
It's actually strange, because Luke takes his friend everywhere, even to the swamps of Dagobah.
Unless, of course, Luke did eventually want to be found.
Though why did he leave part of the map in the Imperial Archives what the hell, maybe he's baiting Kylo and Snoke?
>>
>>44296700

No, I've run my quest with no obvious waifus. Whenever a woman character appears, I write her as true to the character I envision for her as I can, and I've never written anyone who started with a complete crush on the main character or existed purely as waifu bait. At least, I don't think so. One of the things I've been complimented on is that the quest doesn't focus on the women or waifus, it's very story-driven and any romance the players has built up for the main character is more organic and directly based on their choices.

That's what I would want for my Star Wars quest, to not have any overt waifu-bait characters, but romance can spring if it is a natural progression for the characters involved.

So my Edge of the Empire group shaped up to be a meaner, ruder version of the New Hope gang: we've got a whiskey-drinking smuggler and his bloodthirsty Trandoshan bodyguard transporting a Force-sensitive who uses her powers for stealth and stealing.

Now they've found an abandoned Imperial R5 who is being hunted by the Empire because he has a secret which will be a plot hook later. However, the droid also has an addiction obligation. He is addicted to modifying himself and the party's YT-1300. What are some good ways to express this? What are some useful, interesting or unexpected mods for an astromech? The droid was able to bait them into removing his restraining bolt and they never put a new one on.

Imperial Archives? is that mentioned in a book I haven't read because I don't recall that from the film
>>
>>44296906

It was mentioned in the film. The First Order got thier half of the mapdata from the Imperial Archives, and R2 had it as well. Both needed the map info in BB8's chip.
>>
>>44296906
I'm pretty sure it was mentioned..... maybe I'm wrong, but I think Snoke brought it up.
The fact that they know a map exists at all is weird if they hadn't found some reference to it beforehand.
>>
>>44296807
Damage threshold is the same number as the con defense. If damage done to a character goes above their damage threshold, they move down the condition track, which is more or less a 5 step version of bloodied and starts dealing penalties.

Some good ideas might include purely cosmetic changes, voice-box replacement, switching out modes of movement (wheels, treads, dozens of tiny little feet, one big jumping leg, etc), language randomization, adding or removing nonsensical protocols or system restrictions that may interfere in its daily duties (Sorry, I can't touch yellow things sir!), replacing useful tools with useless ones and vice versa, incorporating weapons into themselves, removing all weapons from themselves, makeshift weapons that only occasionally work, replacing perfectly good parts with recently found ones regardless of their quality, and adding buttons to their exterior casing that do things but are not labeled in the slightest.

Consider having the R5 modify its designation each time it modifies itself, perhaps with something like X####, with X standing for Experimental and the #### replaced with how many changes it's been through in total. For extra and totally unnecessary groan-inducing roleplay, have it only respond to its name when the whole number chain is listed, unless the situation is an emergency. "Who is this R5-X0126? My designation is R5-X0128! You must have me confused for some other, more primitive, less awesome robot!"

I hope that helps!

How come In TPM people say human reflexes aren't good enough to participate in Pod racing yet the best fighter pilot in the universe is allways a human? Force powered or not

Pod racer controls have lag, the cockpit swings around on the back being in different locations from where the engines are. This means you need to calculate a lot of extra shit which you wouldn't if you were in a properly designed vehicle.

That explains why humans aren't good at podracing.

But instead we got "THE FORCE! HAYAAAA!" and just tanked him instead.

The character's you assign to them.

>>44298723
Blast. I was hoping to be able to use the new X-wing figure for things just because it's blue. Oh well. Thanks!
>>
So my group's using Mongoose Traveller, I tweaked the career term lengths and starting ages (3 years and 14) to make the characters feel more competent at a younger age.

My party's bounty hunter went from a concept of a struggling force sensitive grunt to a mercenary commander who can see days into the future, is looking to buy a Corellian corvette, and has enough resources left over to buy and man a squadron of X-wings.

I never expected the players to have this much power and am now scrambling to figure out their impact on the galaxy leading up to TFA.
>>
>>44299081
I liked him a lot. He's actually an interesting person. A troubled kid playing pretend at being Darth Vader and barely holding it together.
>>
>>44299081
I found him entertaining due to how pathetic he ended up coming off as. His powerful presence in the Freud was endlessly amusing. Plus I swear pic related is going to be his reveal.
>>
>>44299044
A surprising amount of stuff in X-Wing is apparently re-canonized, like the Tie Defender and Phantom. As X-Wing remains popular, maybe its even been the inspiration for using those things.

As for the new canon themselves, it's full of some great ships. The T-70 was a great chance to update the far too vanilla standard X-Wing. The ship the game was named after sadly stood as one of the weakest ships, only held up by it's ace abilities up til now. F/O Ties are also a similar update, though more of a side-grade than an upgrade. And it's including my waifu from new canon, so I can't argue there.
>>
>>44299110
He already knows that Snoke is just using him so he must have a plan to betray or something.
>>
>>44298809
>That moment when you realize that your options will be T-65 or T-70 and you'll probably never get to fly anything from the XJ series.

Frak.
>>
>>44298911
But Wedge could probably outfly Poe still! I bet they just didn't want him hogging the spotlight.

>>44298820
Finn was very likable, and had good chemistry with Rey, BB-8, and Han.

But man, Kylo Ren just sucked. I feel like he might've been even worse than Hayden Christensen, to be honest.
>>
>>44298809
Same here. I love flying a triple threat of T-65s. Maybe it's just me wanting to put my Rebel Transport pack to use, but I keep finding new fun stuff to do with all those weird pilots. Got 3 T-70 expansions so I could run the whole crews with integrated astromechs. Plus Hobbie and targeting astromech is a pretty sweet combo. Free U-Turn plus target lock plus action (most likely focus)
>>
>>44299152
>he might've been even worse than Hayden Christensen
Hold your tongue nigga. Adam Driver might not have been that great but at least give him another movie before damning him like that.
>>
>>44299176
I'm basing it solely off the first movie. He has a chance to redeem himself but considering the groupthink hate against Hayden, I think making an initial opinion is more than fair.
>>
>>44299152
I wouldn't go anywhere near saying THAT. They might've gone a bit far portraying him as a very flawed villain, but I liked his characterization. I just wish they didn't down play his threat level so badly having Rey so easily beat him after zero training.
>>
>>44299199
>Rey so easily beat him after zero training
Didn't she grow up having to fend off things herself? I wouldn't say it's far fetched that her training in combat is comparable to Kylo.
>>
>>44299152
>Kylo Ren just sucked

Are you kidding? His humor was on point, his rage was believable and he came across as a spoiled, self-centered child who was used to getting everything his own way.

He was better than Harrison Ford phoning in Han.
>>
>>44299152
jesus, rewatch the prequels stat
>>
>>44299224
You're the one kidding here, buddy. Harrison Ford displayed a perfect aged Han. Every scene with him was amazing and had those pause a screen moments.
>>
>>44299189
>groupthink hate against Hayden

The guy put in terrible fucking acting all through those films. It's not group think as much it is universally evident that it is no good.
>>
Its amazing how many people don't realise they dislike the guy because the film did it right.

He was MEANT to be inferior to Vader and to hate himself for that fact. He was meant to be confused and immature. And it was handled far better than the prequels handled Anakin.
>>
>>44293752
So, I'm getting conflicting memes here.
Is his name Tray Tor or Marauder Shields?
>>
>>44299260
He was barely there. I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one who suggested having Han get killed. He clearly didn't want to be in the movie and did fuck all of an attempt to get something believable out of his performance.
>>
>>44299285
it shouldn't be Tray Tor since he is extremely loyal. If anything Finn should be Tray Tor
>>
>>44299199
>zero training.
Kylo's due to go back to Snook for extra training, because he is a filthy scrub.
In terms of Rey, she's not a 1st time combatant- tarred the fucking shit out of two guys in the scavenger camp that are after BB8. Those cunts got fucking wrecked.
(Plus- I think she's a Padawan that got dropped off on that planet after the Knights of Ren thing)

Sort of think of it as someone who's been formally trained in fencing vs someone who's spent a great deal of their life looking after themselves in a hostile environment and actually does know how to fight.
>>
>>44299285

He's just TR-8R.
>>
>>44299285

Judging by the post you replied to, we could refer to him as ST-166. Problem is that he's neither tame nor a racing pilot.

>zero training

Why do people keep repeating this nonsense. I see no issue with a competent fighter beating a heavily wounded guy with incomplete training.
>>
>>44299199

Dude. She kicked his ass after he got shot by Chewies boltcaster - which we saw throw Storm Troopers across fucking hallways.

The fact that he was still standing and punching the fucking wound was a surprise. I actually expected Finn to wreck him.
>>
>>44299260
>>44299224
Guys lets not do this. Ren and Solo in the film were both well done. Just let it be.
>>
>>44299285
His name is not important.
What's important is his message.
>>
>>44299321

Yeah, unfortunately as shown by the Riot Trooper...Finn's kinda shit in a brawl.

Great marksman, shitty infighter.
>>
>>44297082
So what you're saying is the truth, from a certain point of view....

Who else is excited for the comic book run about Luke's hand and Saber questing across the galaxy before retiring at Maz's bar?

B-wing mounted death star cannon for x-wing when?
>>
>>44299341
I'm really excited to see where his character goes. Rey is quite the mechanic and such but also likely going to end up the Jedi type.

Meanwhile Finn isn't a natural fighter, hell it's the reason he washed out of the First Order so quickly.
>>
>>44299293
Hmm. I guess performance is subjective, but could you agree that Han was pretty decently written? His Alzheimers, losing his edge in negotiations, having ended up in bumfuck no-where massively in debt, it really helped hammer in how much losing his son broke him.

He seems more tactical than she is though. He put together a lot of the info needed to win.

I imagine, as a former sanitation worker, the gangster scene and getting as far as he could with the resistance ruse he's going to be a bit of a sneaky bastard/tunnel rat. At least that's what I'm hoping for.
>>
>>44299349
I'm hoping the Rebel Veterans pack includes B-Wing again with Hera as a pilot and Blade Wing as a title. We know the E-Wing is basically a sure thing, but what else they include is up in the air. Probably not the B-Wing, but a man can dream.
>>
>>44299381
Oh, definitely. I have no issue with how the character was written.

>>44299341
True, but until that point we'd never really seen Kylo as a good saber fighter. Just a guy with a sword who spazzed out from time to time.

Finn, shitty fighter aside, at least had his head on straight and didn't devolve in chucking tantrums.
>>
>>44299341
>Great marksman, shitty infighter.
Anyone can shoot guns really with enough training on how a weapon works.
Actually shooting other people is a different sort of training I guess, you override that inner revulsion to 'kill' other human beings... then there's hand to hand combat- which is basically a mix of massive amounts of aggression, training and actually having no problems killing anything!

There is literally 1000's of people in military forces around the world full of those people that don't have any inclination to kill anyone, do their basic, learn to shoot their gun, maybe stab a bag with a bayonet and that's it. They don't want to and probably ultimately, will avoid at considerable cost- killing anything.
