It is 157 years since the the Battle of Solferino, where the allied French Army under Napoleon III and Sardinian Army under Victor Emmanuel II (together known as the Franco-Sardinian Alliance) defeated the Austrian Army under Emperor Franz Joseph I. It was the last major battle in world history where all the armies were under the personal command of their monarchs, and the largest since the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. There were about 130,000 Austrian troops and a combined total of 140,000 French and allied Piedmontese troops. After the battle, the Austrian Emperor refrained from further direct command of the army.

The battle was a decisive engagement in the Second Italian War of Independence, a crucial step in the Italian Risorgimento. The war's geopolitical context was the nationalist struggle to unify Italy, which had long been divided among France, Austria, Spain and numerous independent Italian states. The battle took place near the villages of Solferino and San Martino, Italy, south of Lake Garda between Milan and Verona.

The confrontation was between the Austrians, on one side, and the French and Piedmontese forces, who opposed their advance. In the morning of 23 June, after the arrival of Emperor Franz Joseph, the Austrian army changed direction to counterattack along the river Chiese. At the same time, Napoleon III ordered his troops to advance, causing the battle to occur in an unpredicted location. While the Piedmontese fought the Austrian right wing near San Martino, the French battled to the south of them near Solferino against the main Austrian corps.

The Austrian forces were personally led by their militarily inexperienced 29-year-old emperor, Franz Joseph, and were divided into two field armies: 1st Army, containing three corps (III, IX and XI), under Franz von Wimpffen and 2nd Army, containing four corps (I, V, VII and VIII) under Franz von Schlick.
>>
>>47924785
The French army at Solferino, personally led by Napoleon III, was divided in four Corps plus the Imperial Guard. Many of its men and generals were veterans of the French conquest of Algeria and the Crimean War, but its commander-in-chief had no military experience of note. The Sardinian army had four divisions on the field.

According to the allied battle plan formulated on 24 June, the Franco-Sardinian army moved east to deploy along the right river banks of the Mincio. The French were to occupy the villages of Solferino, Cavriana, Guidizzolo and Medole with, respectively, the 1st Corps (Baraguey d'Hilliers), 2nd Corps (Mac-Mahon), 3rd Corps (Canrobert), and 4th Corps (Niel). The four Sardinian divisions were to take Pozzolengo. After marching a few kilometers, the allies came into contact with the Austrian troops, who had entrenched themselves in those villages. In the absence of a fixed battle plan, the fighting which took place was uncoordinated, which is why so many casualties occurred, and it fell into three separate engagements, at Medole (south), Solferino (centre) and San Martino (north).

The battle started at Medole around 4 am. Marching towards Guidizzolo, the 4th Corps encountered an Austrian infantry regiment of the Austrian 1st Army. General Niel immediately decided to engage the enemy and deployed his forces east of Medole. This move prevented the three corps of the Austrian 1st Army from aiding their comrades of the 2nd Army near Solferino, where the main French attacks took place.

The French forces were numerically inferior to the Austrians'. The 4th Corps contained three infantry divisions under de Luzy, Vinoy and Failly and a cavalry brigade. Niel, holding a thin line of 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) in length, was able to stop the Austrian assaults on his position by ably warding off attacks and counterattacking at opportune moments. After 15 hours of combat the Austrians retreated, both sides having lost in total nearly 15,000 men.

Around 4:30 am the advance guard of the 1st Corps (three infantry divisions under Forey, de Ladmirault, and Bazaine, and a cavalry division under Desvaux) came into contact with the Austrian V Corps under Stadion near Castiglione delle Stiviere. Around 5 am 2nd Corps under Mac-Mahon (two infantry divisions and a cavalry brigade under La Motterouge, Decaen and Gaudin) encountered Hungarian units posted near Ca’Morino (Medole). The Austrian forces were three corps strong (I, V and VII) and positioned on the towns of Solferino, Cavriana and Volta Mantovana. The Austrians were able to hold these positions all day against repeated French attacks.

Near 3 pm the French reserves, formed by Canrobert’s 3rd Corps and the Imperial Guard under Regnaud, attacked Cavriana, which was defended by the Austrian I Corps under Clam-Gallas, finally occupying it at 6 pm and thereby breaking through the Austrian center. This breakthrough forced a general retreat of both Austrian armies.

On the northern side of the battlefield the Sardinians, 4 divisions strong, encountered the Austrians around 7 am. A long battle erupted over control of Pozzolengo, San Martino and Madonna della Scoperta. Although the Austrian VIII Corps under Benedek was numerically inferior, they were able to ward off all Sardinian attacks until the entire Austrian army retired from the field at the end of day.

The battle was a particularly gruelling one, lasting over nine hours and resulting in over 2,386 Austrian troops killed with 10,807 wounded and 8,638 missing or captured. The Allied armies also suffered a total of 2,492 killed, 12,512 wounded and 2,922 captured or missing. Reports of wounded and dying soldiers being shot or bayonetted on both sides added to the horror. In the end, the Austrian forces were forced to yield their positions, and the Allied French-Piedmontese armies won a tactical, but costly, victory.

Napoleon III was moved by the losses, as he had argued back in 1852 "the French Empire is peace", and for reasons including the Prussian threat and domestic protests by the Roman Catholics, he decided to put an end to the war with the Armistice of Villafranca (12 July 1859). The Piedmontese won Lombardy but not Venetia. Camillo Benso, conte di Cavour, resigned. The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861.

This battle would have a long-term effect on the future conduct of military actions. Jean-Henri Dunant, who witnessed the aftermath of the battle in person, was motivated by the horrific suffering of wounded soldiers left on the battlefield to begin a campaign that would eventually result in the Geneva Conventions and the establishment of the International Red Cross.

Solferino is an epic, one of the biggest battles in 19th-century Europe, and gives wargamers a chance to command on a grand scale. It was fought over a sprawling area by a wide variety of colorful troops in heated battle, and had a direct impact on historical events, making it a worthy subject for wargaming.

For Saga, why shouldn't I just get one of the GBP boxes of viking hirdmen instead of the 25 point starter boxes to start off? Do the starter boxes contain anything special that would make them a better idea?
>>
>>47926229
afaik they include mixed sprues of armored and unarmored dudes while the box has only one kind.
>>
>>47926229
Because the Hirdmen contain only bodies in chainmail (generally reserved for hearthguards), and more fo those than you really need. Meanwhile, the starter boxes contain a mix of hirdmen in chainmail and warriors without (that you can give helmeted heads from the hirdmen sprues)

Hard to get people to cooperate without a framework, and something at stake.

Shared currency (or, at least, explicitly tied economies) and something that passes for a central government are pretty much a given. You really don't want your military collaborating without some form of government oversight, and you need a reason to go defend those [adjacent ancient enemies] and not just let them get fucked over.
>>
>>47937788
You're talking about a concept that's distinct from the EU. Perhaps one day it'll exist. After all, the League of Nations failed at first. Maybe European leaders will learn from the mistakes of the EU and forge a stronger, more effective, and more palatable union in the future.

The League and its successor, the UN, are really just places to talk out differences and fix minor problems in poorer nations. They aren't really cohesive entities - they're just mechanisms for diplomacy.

Well, it does it for me for platoon level gaming. Lots of cheap and easily accessible stuff, so it's fine by me. If I had to switch scales, I'd go prolly 15mm and use Team Yankee stuff.

June 25th marks the 140th anniversary of the Battle of Little Big Horn, known to history as Custer's Last Stand. You could fill a library with the literature published on the subject, not to mention all the TV and movies (and a certain notorious vidya). Basically it boils down to: Custer done fucked up. It's been a popular subject for wargaming for many years (Foundry did a whole bunch of minis from their Western line for it). A more intelligent, less vainglorious US Cavalry commander could reverse the historical result. On the other hand a careful Indian player could double the carnage and wipe out the whole unit, not just Custer's force.

Well, a rather straightforward, enjoyable and quick build, can be completed in about half an hour if really needed. The .50cal is a bit fiddly, and prolly breaks easily, so I'd recommend replacing it with a metal one or a more sturdy one from a WW2 set like the M3 halftracks from PSC, but it's a detailed piece. The handle wasn't formed on the sprue correctly, so I just left it off.

A great value for money, as you can get the box for around 12 Euros+postage from China. PE and transfers included, but I'll probably leave the former off.

A couple years back the Wall Street Journal had an article which unfortunately I can't find now which was talking about sports TV programming and said that casual fans are OK with just football, baseball, basketball et cetera whereas the demand for coverage of obscure sports (say curling or odd non-standard leagues etc) is driven by a minority of hardcore fans. Thus a broadcaster doesn't lose much total marketshare by ignoring the people who would want to watch Canadian Football. Essentially the more interested in the subject, the more likely you are to delve in obscure arcane corners of the topic.
Wargames are probably similar where most people who play any kind of historicals are perfectly happy playing "Saving Private Ryan" in Bolt Action rather than having any interest in attempting a simulation of the Slovak–Hungarian War.

I can't even hold a grudge against BA, I mean it practically saved the club after everyone not already playing something else got utterly fed up with warhammer/40k, BA gave them something easy, cheap and filled the same easy-access, no knowledge required gaming with a theme that's easy to grasp and get behind.

Doesn't help though that half my gaming buddies who do actually play other things all decided to go and spawn more to remove what free time they had. Now that's just inconsiderate.

British Redcoat vs French Fusilier: North America 1755-1763 (Osprey Combat 17)

Providing a unique glimpse into the experiences of regular British and French infantry during the French and Indian War, Stuart Reid reveals what it was like to fight in three battles at the height of the struggle for Canada: La Belle-Famille, the Plains of Abraham and Sainte-Foy. In 1755, Britain and France both decided to escalate a low intensity frontier war that had started the previous year by dispatching regular troops to their respective colonies in North America. Far from home, both sides' equipment and tactics were initially more suited to the European theatre. As the war ground on, however, combat doctrine evolved as both armies learned lessons that would be utilized by succeeding generations of soldiers. Packed with first-hand accounts, dramatic illustrations and a technical analysis of the changing nature of warfare on the American continent, this book puts readers in the shoes of the combatants who played a pivotal role in shaping the future of North America.

US Army Rangers 1989-2015: Panama to Afghanistan (Osprey Elite 212)

Written by an expert on modern Special Forces units and the operations they undertake, this book explains the evolution of the Rangers' missions in Panama, the first Gulf War, Somalia and the post 9/11 invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. It reveals the training and organizational changes that the unit has undergone and investigates in particular how their doctrine and tactics have changed during the 14-year war in Afghanistan. At the beginning of the war the Rangers were an elite light infantry unit of picked men tasked with short duration recon raids and securing ground behind enemy lines in support of Special Forces; they have since evolved into a special-mission unit themselves - on the cusp of being assigned to the Joint Special Operations Command.

Had a game of BA today in 3000 points, Soviets against Germans, with a single T-34/76 being the MVP of the Soviet team by taking fire from two Panthers and a King Tiger for three turns and refusing to die.

Sadly we still lost by two points. Scenario was Envelopment (I think), each destroyed unit was worth 1 point, and we had overall 4 more units as the Soviets. It was fun tho, and took the four of us entertained the whole day.

In real life if either of those tanks even thought about targeting a T-34/76, It would be nothing but a crater in the ground.

King tiger has a Long barrel 88 for cripes sake. Thats the same gun that makes the T-34 Explode in that classic "88s in action" webm always posted here. T-34s stand no chance against that kind of weapon, and germans dont really miss, unless someone let Volkssturm into the tanks, which doesn't really make sense

Interesting. Usually once a tank goes on fire, the crew bails out and the thing is wrecked. I've never heard of a crew putting out a fire. Usually if a fire starts they either bail out, or all burn to death.

I guess this is a problem with games, they dont always reflect reality (although by the sounds of it the penetration roll should be 2+ instead of 3+. 88s and long 75s really didn't have any trouble punching through 45mm of armor. The only explanation would be a complete miss (say if the T-34 was on the move), and total glancing shot at something like 80 degrees from vertical, or if the T-34 was dug in (or behind cover) and the shot hit the dirt instead of the tank.

>>47959719
Just a "real"aboo. Done too much research into WW2 to let things like T-34s not being instantly destroyed by 88s and long 75s fly.

>>47959599
The 7.5cm KwK 42 (what the panther uses) can penetrate 138mm at 100m and still up to 99mm at 1500m.
If its using decent ammunition, it can penetrate 194mm at 100m and 127mm at 1500m.
There isn't a T-34/76 in the world that can take that kind of punishment. Only 45mm of armor :)

8.8cm KwK 43 on the other hand can penetrate 203mm at 100m and 148mm at 1500m.

They really are the kind of gun that will shoot through 45mm and keep going through the back 45mm of the tank as well, and then probably penetrate the tank behind! the only excuse for not annihilating in 1 shot would be cover, entrenchment, or the T-34 moving pretty quickly and the gunner having a bad day.

>although by the sounds of it the penetration roll should be 2+ instead of 3+
Well, both the King Tiger and the Panther is armed with a "super heavy anti-tank gun" in terms of Bolt Action with a penetration value of +7. The T-34/76 has an armor value of 9+, so the German played neered basically a 2+ - in which case he rolls for superficial damage (D6-3 on the damage chart), and he didn't roll too high on that either. It's certainly a situation it's kind of hard to believe (and we've made a number of theories how it could have happen - the T-34 was just a big, solid block of steel with no actual interior that was just placed on the battlefield, or in the end, Günther from the King Tiger opened the hatch, dismounted his tank, went to the Soviet tank, knocked on the T-34, and when the commander opened his hatch, he shouted "FUCK YOU", and walked back to his own lines), but Lady Luck is a whore. Tank crew got the Hero of the Soviet Union badge for what its worth.

>Usually once a tank goes on fire, the crew bails out and the thing is wrecked. I've never heard of a crew putting out a fire.

Are you talking about Bolt Action or about reality/WW2?

Here is a report about the actions from the last days of ww2.
The 502nd equipped with only 2 remaining Tiger 2s tries to break through the soviet lines.

Ernst Streng, a tank commander who got wounded earlier writes in his diary on May 1st (1945).
>Plötzlich ein metallisches Bersten in der hinteren Wannenseite: Wir haben einen schweren Treffer erhalten. Der Panzer brennt. Verwundete werden durch die Luken ins Freie gezerrt. Nur weg vom Panzer!

>Suddenly, a metal crack in the back of the hull. A heavy hit. The tank is burning. Wounded are dragged out through the hatches. Just away from the tank

>Dann aber springen beherzte zu, reissen die Decken aus den Kisten, schaufeln Erde in einen Eimer, reissen die Feuerlöscher aus den Halterungen und löschen noch einmal den Brand.

>But then some brave (men) jump towards it. Take the fire blankets out of the boxes, shovel dirt/earth into a bucket and get the fire extinguishers to take out the fire once again

later:

>Zwei wuchtige Schläge treffen unser Heck. Unser Panzer ruckt noch ein Stück vor, dann steht er still. Eine Stichflamme. Der Benzintank ist getroffen. Wider werden die verwundeten hinausgezerrt. Nun ist unser Panzer nicht mehr zu retten.

>Two heavy hits on our back. Our tank rocks a little and then stands still. A jet of flame. Fuel tank is hit. Again we drag the wounded out. Now we can't save our tank.
http://www.zweiter-weltkrieg-lexikon.de/waffen-ss/95-ss-panzer-abteilungen/598-schwere-ss-panzer-abteilung-502

Their last tank went out of fuel later that day, but they actually made it through the lines of the Soviets towards the Americans.

While certainly a rare case, putting out a fire on a tank was possible and it happened.

That sounds about right. There's a fire, and the crew bail out. Yes they are able to put out the fires later, but they still bail out instantly. No one stays inside the tank when a fire starts, and from my knowledge WW2 tanks didn't have fire extinguishers in them.

Also thats a Tiger, we expect it to be fairly resilient against most Allied guns save the 17pdr and maybe the 90mm on a pershing (should any have seen combat) A T-34 by comparison would just explode if hit.

I believe fires were put out, but usually after the battle, when the winner goes back and salvages the burnt out wrecks to be refitted.

I'd be interested to know how many Soviet tanks these guys were able to destroy during these days. Essentially they could destroy them as fast as they could fire, provided there was always a target in sight.
>>
>>47969660
The link provides numbers actually.

Right after they put out the flames they destroyed 3 T-34 before getting hit again.

>06.03.45
Lieferung von 31 Tiger II.
>delivery of 31 Tiger 2.

Further below in the article are the days in April 45 listed:

>16.04.45
11 tanks

>17.04.45
repelling an attack together with a Flak unit.

>21.04.45
several tanks were left behind after they had no ammo left and the running gear was damaged

>22.04.45
16 enemy tanks destroyed, several tigers without fuel were destroyed by their crews.
One tiger was hit by AT gun and abanndoned

>23.04.45
15 enemy tanks destroyed near Demnitz-Steinhövel

>25.04.45
One tiger gets destroyed by its crew after it got hit earlier

>26.04.45
One Tiger burns out entirely after its automatic fire extinguishers malfunctioned (>>47969628
I'm not sure about this, but here its stated that they actually had a fire extinguishing system)

27.04.45
1 tiger gets hit by enemy, another one hits a wheeled vehicle by accident while driving reverse and its hot exhaust pipes set off dripping fuel and it starts burning

>28.04.45
1 tiger lost due to enemy at-infantry
2 more abandoned and destroyed by their crew later that day
The whole equipment of the repair/maintenance company was gathered and destroyed i a forest so the soviets won't get it

>29.04.45
1 tank left behind because of water in the fuel tank
1 tank destroyed by the own crew because of a ripped off final drive (?)

>30.04.45
attack on Hennickendorf, march through Wittbrietzen - Rieben - Zauchwitz

>01.05.45
1 Tiger 2 remaining, loaded fully with wounded, no crew member without wound
Shortly before reaching the lines of the 12. army it was hit by a panzerfaust and burned and exploded (thats what i translated above).
Then their last tank (apparently not a Tiger 2) went out of fuel but they made it to the 12th army lines.

70 tanks were destroyed in these days.
Schwere Panzerabteilung 502 was reduced to 0 operational tanks.
>>
>>47969848
>70 tanks were destroyed in these days.
oh yeah, thats the goods, Thanks anon. Interesting to see a fire extinguishing system, but I guess this is one of the later german tanks of the war, and germans are always ahead on tech like that, so I'm thinking it would be one of the few tanks to have this kind of system. Very interesting though, thanks for the write up.

The part about accidentally backing into a light vehicle and exhaust pipes setting off the fuel is hilarious! One of those things you can't really have rules for in a wargame
>>
>>47944605
I'm sorry you feel that way, but it won't stop me from wining the LPL again.

>First time posting here,, "newfag", I believe that's the correct term. 17 year old
Next time, replace all this with "newfag here".

Aside from that, your post isn't terrible. Try to keep to proper grammar (ie, lose the spaces in front of your question marks) and keep your paragraphs short.

As to your question, Bolt Action tends to be best around 1000-1500pts which usually involves a few vehicles and a few dozen men on each side, smaller skirmishes are possible but aren't very interesting as the rules of BA are kept simple to allow larger games to flow more quickly.

Sadly my club only plays BA, but someone else here will undoubtedly suggest a squad level game. If you want to look for yourself, this link in the OP is where you want to start:

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/z8a13ampzzs88/World_War_Two
>>
>>47970080
BA could work on squad level, but you could try the Battlegroup games too. BA will be easier to get people into.

Aaaand the ever-popular Fivecore rules are there too.
>>
Hey, do we have Craig Woodfield's / Osprey's En Garde! skirmish rules in the database?
I didn't see it under Horse & Musket, but it might be elsewhere.
>>
>>47970080
If you paint up a third squad each to finish the platoon, take a look at Chain of Command.
You'll want vehicles as well, but everyone wants vehicles for WW2.
>>
>>47970080
Check out 5 men in normandy from one of the links in the OP. Its a skirmish game.

Bolt Action can work too, but its more fun with a bit bigger forces. Its far more popular though.

Besides that, post some pics
>>
>>47970080
you "could" buy a couple of boxes cheap (one each side?), then paint and use as proxies in a random system like THWs Nuts! (probably in the trove, but check http://www.twohourwargames.com/nufive.html)

Other rules are available that model WW2 better probably.

>>47968891
Could you make your own fancy Saga dice by removing pips from regular dice with fine sandpaper and scratching the proper runes on? Or are the runes too complicated?
>>
>>47970719

Much easier solution, buy a handful of blank dice from here:
http://blankdice.co.uk/

Then print out the dice symbols on label paper, and viola, SAGA dice. It's what I did.
>>
>>47970719
If we're talking Viking dice, you could definetely carve the runes yourself (runes are reasonably simple to carve, since that was how they were written)
>>
>>47968891
So 4 groups of hearthguard then?
I just have the hirdmen box and want to get a hang of the game before investing more into my force.
I like the Dane-axes though so I'll switch.
>>
>>47969958
i just looked at this link with the help of google translate:

>Verluste: 107 (losses)
>>
>>47971347
That works, especially for Jomsvikings.
>>
>>47970771

How did you glue the paper onto the dice? Does it stick/look properly?

Newfag from earlier, thanks for all the help. Is it normal my first post has dissapeared? Anyway, after reading a bit, I think i'll stick to either "Nuts!" or "5 men in Normandy". For those interested, here is my first Brit squad all painted up. The second one is about 1/3 complete but is in a bit of a bad shape after being dropped by my mother. All figures are from Airfix. Done a bit more than half of the first Afrika Korps squad this afternoon, fotos will come eventually if there's interrest for that type of thing.
>>
>>47972958
Guess it was because of the age-thing.

Airfix? Good choice, and they look fine - be sure to protect your paintjob so the paint won't crack. If you plan to do more, consider investing into a Plastidip spray.
>>
>>47972958
They look very good for 1/72. I would struggle to pull that kind of paintjob off

i'm about to create an auction on ebay to sell off some tanks in 1/56 and 1/48 and figured i might ask you guys first if you are interested.

I got a Tiger 1 and a Puma for Bolt Action as well as a M4, Sdkfz251, Hetzer, Panzer 4J, Panzer 4H and Pz 38(t) in 1/48 by Tamiya. I also got some 1/48 Hmmvws.

All kits are new and untouched. The Bolt Action kits have no box though, but the sprues are still sealed in.

I'm based in Germany, so keep that in mind.

What about games that are pulp in thst they don't have monsters and magic, and all the models are more or less historically accurate, but the system focuses more on adventure than realism (like Pulp Alley)? Because that's the kind of stuff I'm into at the moment.
>>
>>47975363
Given that Bolt Action stuff is always present, the 'realism' of a game system clearly isn't a problem.
>>
>>47975305
Just fill the gaps with putty.
>>
>>47974269
Mine are super glued to 2 pence pieces and then based with polyfilla.

The super glue seems to be fine, but I certainly wouldn't want them to be jarred at all, I'm sure it wouldn't take much to separate a few of them from their base.
>>

Retardedly complex RPG.

Haven't played Final Combat >>47967272 but I think it's similarly complex, but more of a wargame than an RPG
>>
>>47976122
It's not as complex as everyone loves to state. For the most part, the tables do the work. It's just a matter of remembering how said tables work.

Not that it isn't one of the most complicated RPGs out there, but it isn't too far past something like Twilight 2000.
>>
>>47976122
How wuld a Phoenix command wargame even work? Like 5 guys vs 5 guys 54mm?
>>
>>47974269
I use washers with superglue and the guys seem to stay put just fine. Since washers have less texture than coins, I scratch up the surface with a carbide scriber to give the glue something to grip onto but you could probably skip that step.

For contouring the edge of the base, I like the Vallejo pumice paste. Fill and texture in 1 step.
>>
>>47974730
That's my feeling. As long as it's not too far into the steampunk wankery I'm OK with it.

The old Tremorden Reddering website was great and while it only rarely had truly fantastical elements like steam tanks, it at no point pretended to be realistic either.

Mammalian Mayhem, and there's a dinosaur themed one too. I'll repost them tomorrow when I'm with my files. This actually got asked here some time ago when someone posted some neolithic style minis.
>>
>>47979714
They're directed charges that explode outwards when hit with sufficient force. The explosion outwards will in theory nullify the incoming projectile by decreasing velocity/destroying it/preventing EFP from functioning. They also sort of function as gapped armour. They're good for ATGMs and things with an explosive component, less good for APFSDS and tandem warhead weapons.
