please don't be dead man

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you've been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, wonder if Jangle's Thrift Tourney ever existed (spooky), listen to homeless communists scream, and just let the good times flow.

Lads, I'm going to make an attempt to improve my writing """skills""" and """review""" some of my favorites. The thing is, I'd like some help in picking albums to write about. So please pick some stuff (preferably from my favorites but it's fine if they're not) for me to write about.

>>
>>66440876
It's easier and funner to write about albums you don't like than it is to write about something that you like should it come down to an 800-1000 word review

Join your student magazine, write reviews for them, they have editors who can help you, I'll send you three of the reviews I wrote on rym

>>66440937
Sure.

Also, keep in mind that you guys can add as much stuff as you want to the list.
>>
>>66440993
student magazines are generally not a serious environment, everyone does it voluntarily, out of the love of their own voice... nah but everyone's pretty chill, if you have a good one as well then you could get opportunities out of it, talk to people, don't be intimidated, you could make friends
>>
>>66440993
>Add it to the list, man.
Oh, I did not realize I could add to the list. I am goof. Will add in a second.

>>66440990
Oh dear. Oh well, his perogative, I guess.

>>66440929
I have it the opposite. I really enjoy writing about music I like. I would rather share my opinion on music I like and hear other peoples opinions on what they like, rather than what they did not like.

I will agree that it is easier to condemn something, though. Much easier.
>>
>>66441041
I find both very appealing, music I like and are excited about and music that I fucking hate
>>
>>66441059
>music that I fucking hate
I can see the appeal in it but I just do not see the point. I am not stopping anybody, though.

Also, Beats, Noise, and Life is really good so far. Thanks, Mark!
>>
>>66441022
I'll think about that then. A comfy group of writers does sound nice.
>>66441041
Like I said earlier, keep in mind that you can add as much stuff you like.
>>
>>66441082
>I can see the appeal in it but I just do not see the point.
The point is the appeal
>>
>>66440990
ah yes. I read through that in the archives the other day
>>
>>66441093
But what does it accomplish? You hate this certain collection of connected songs or you hate this specific track, now what? You are not going to spend more time with it, you are not going to suggest other people do it, it just seems such a waste of time to me to write in long and eloquent fashion why something is bad. If you hate this or this, you want to spend as little of your time on it, yes?

Of course you need to actively listen to something first before you figure out whether you like or dislike it, granted, but afterwards, why would you spend more time with something that you do not enjoy? Where is the sense in that?

I guess the appeal is to get a kick out of your frustrations of having wasted that time spent, sort of a "getting back" at the artist but otherwise, I do not get it.

I still have some doubts about the rating of Another Thought, since it seemed a bit sparse and too poppy for its own good. The low-key moments were, anyway, great. Surely a better album than the Natsume one, which was a bit tiring and more-of-the-same-y. Some brass passages were really interesting, though.

To answer your question: his student films are skippable. The steamroller and the violin is the most remarkable one but even then there's a big gap in quality from his feature ones. I'd say if science fiction attracts you start with either solaris or stalker. Otherwise Ivan's childhood is a good starting point, it was his first feature film.

Don Cherry - Complete Communion (1966)
>avant-garde jazz

Despite my unabashed love for "mu" First Part, this is actually the only Don Cherry release I've heard besides "mu". It doesn't reach up to the unreachable heights of that album, but it's certainly very good in it's own right. The main issue is that it doesn't really have it's own sound. The major thing that sets it apart is how each instrument has it's own incredibly important part in the compositions, and I think that's a major facet of Cherry's compositions as a whole. But despite that, there's nothing really indistinguishable about this compared to other avant-jazz releases of the time period. Still, a really nice listen.

Serge Gainsbourg - History de la Melody Nelson (or something like that)
really cool, fucking nice bass, surprisingly psychedelic in this smooth kind of sleeze way
Some of the textures here are great, especially in the last track, where the bass player goes slint on you

Are you giving popular indie albums like Bonny Bear and The Boxer by Simon & Garfunkel by The National edgy scores because you REALLY hate them that much or are you very much influenced by their popularity in deciding a score for them?

Bon Iver was fucking pretentious, I did somewhat enjoy Skinny Love and the song that followed it, but the rest of the album was so piss poor and laser targeted towards a very specific demographic in a pandering sort of way that it made me sick in a pejorative use of the phrase... Probably uber-panned him unfairly but the score stands, just because he uses a Steel Guitar doesn't make him god

The National was boring, very very boring, slow and boring

I loved Tender Prey, liked Your Funeral, My Trial and Let Love In and thought No More Shall We Part and The Good son were ok
overall I think that the main problem I have is that it begins to fade into itself after a while, I'll put him on the shelf for a while and revisit it

>>
>>66445428
If you liked at least one or two songs then a 1/10 does seem weirdly low, yeah :{|}

Henry's Dream is one of Cave's weaker albums desu yeah, I kinda feared you were one of those people who doesn't like Nick Cave at all, though. Seems like you're mostly into his dark gothic stuff and not so much into his softer ballad-focused stuff so in that case you'd do well to listen to his first two albums. Murder Ballads might be something for you, as well.

>>66445782
For all I care shamepai is dead desu. I mean, if he isn't, our best course of action is to collectively ignore him for doing something as low and despicable as faking his own suicide, and if he is, well, we won't hear of him again anyway. Idk the truth though, he is mentally unstable enough to legitimately kill himself and he's also mentally unstable enough to fake it for attention.

the Flea, Josh and John trio also had a Joy Division cover band a while back. pretty cool stuff.

Thanks for that info you left for that drone album I was listening to. While it definitely doesn't make like it any more, I can respect it

>Magnog - Magnog
It's really cool how this band manages to make their music sound so massive with only three people. This album was interesting because while the guitar was focused on playing super fuzzy and reverb heavy lines that were barely moving; the bass was actually playing more melodic stuff to keep the songs moving. My favorite track was Learning Forgetfulness until out of nowhere there is an awful spoken word poetry thing that is kindof hilarious. The slow moving progression on the good songs is so satisfying, its just that some of them didn't seem to go anywhere. Will have to give this a relisten when i'm in a spacey mood. blue triangle/10

>he's still trying to detach himself from the situation and as if he didn't care in the first place

if you didn't care, you wouldn't have power-tripped.

now that we have a clearer picture of what kind of person you really are, it's very hypocritical of you to call people attention whores when you clearly love to be noticed, (as evidenced by >>66445782) and therefore this whole skirting around the conversation stunt after opening your mouth about shit you don't know anything about and trying terribly to blend yourself back into this cute little niche environment you most likely pigeonholed yourself into in the first place, are both embarrassing shams, and you should be ashamed of yourself tbqh.

Show me what you can do with that

I reckon they'll eventually strike off and make a jam album without anthony, used to love RHCP, saw them live over Death Grips and Anco when I was 16 at Perth Big Day Out 2013
bad decision in Hindsight but the lineup that year was especially strong

it's also hilarious how you can front a cynical attitude over people who aren't even here to defend themselves (shamepai) but you clam up like an 8-year-old who just broke a window when you're challenged in real-time. if you refuse to answer any of my other questions, at least be man enough to answer this one: why is that?

>Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come

I like the bit of jazz influence sprinkled in there, and the guitar riffs are really kick ass at times, but I don't really like this album overall that much. There's a bit too much metal influence imo, perhaps if I was more into metal I would like this album more. It's certainly well made, just not really my cup of tea.

:S

>David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

I should have listened to this a long time ago. Everything here is fantastic: Bowie's unique vocals, the sometimes-dramatic-sometimes-catchy instrumentation, and best of all, the amazing lyrics. There really isn't a dull moment here, I would say check it out but I was probably the only person here who hasn't yet. I'll check out more Bowie soon enough.

:D

>Green Day - American Idiot

I really just wanted to get this album out of the way. I don't even know why I put it on my chart, but I did, so here goes nothing. Some of the guitar riffs were really fun and catchy, and the production's pretty good too. A few tracks here were pretty daring by Green Day standards too, such "Extraordinary Girl," which has an Middle Eastern influence. Overall though, it's really not for me, probably because I have no nostalgia for Green Day, and from that viewpoint this album just comes of as childish and dull.

:(

I think I'll try out Duster - Stratosphere next, but I'm not sure.

After stumbling on a compilation of protestant Ethiopian artists, I've decided I'll try and search for more albums/artists along this style. It's not bad, much better than I was expecting.
