It's [JOKE ABOUT THE DATE HERE]!

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you've been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, pity Jangle's Thrift Tourney, listen to Keiji Haino scream, and just let the good times flow.

>dixieland

I'd rather not basically just paraphrase triangle's RYM review of this album, but I feel almost the same away about this album as his. Mainly that it's fucking great. The production is clean, the performances are awesome and danceable as hell, and the drummer is incredible. A /bit/ samey, but whatever, I just wanna dance!

RYM'S SHIT TASTE STRIKES AGAIN

Really though, this is pretty awesome. It sets out to create dense, spooky, manic, tribal atmospheres and it does just that. There's a few times where it gets SUPER incomprehensible and muddled, but there are amazing tracks here ("Hey Light" with its call-and-response screaming, "Two Sails on a Sound" with its soundscaping, "Slippi" with its everything). However, save for the screaming parts, it works better when it's being more pretty than incredibly noisy (I've never thought AnCo did noise well. They're good at introducing noise to pop structures, but not plain noise). The purely noisy parts don't really detract from how shockingly great this is though.

Josef K - The Only Fun in Town (1981)
>post-punk

Catchy fun while it lasts, but nothing sticks at all. Each song is danceable and herky-jerky in a way that only good post-punk can be, but there's really nothing interesting being done here, it's just totally in one ear, out the other. And a lot of the songs have a samey vibe to them. But man, those drum and bass grooves are pretty fucking undeniable, and save a fair amount of the whole record.

Ferraro time!

>God of London EP
The first two tracks were pretty similar to Cold, minimal ironic trappy stuff with some of the a e s t h e t i c siri-robot vocals of fsv. The last track was similarly autotuned distortions of Ferraro's vocals, but they were more expressive and accompanied by some sparse piano playing. Surprisingly emotive and personal for a Ferraro track.

>Citrac
Ferraro ambient meets '80s sci fi thrillers. This was nice and trippy, but I'm still not crazy about his ambient work. I could possibly see spacing out to it in the future, but he has better ambient stuff than this (Last American Hero, On Air).

It's interesting how music gets dull when you listen to too much of it. It's like porn, eventually it does nothing for you and you start developing mild fetishes and needing to take breaks so it can be satisfying again. At least none of us are cataloging and rating the porn we consume. Ferraro is probably the music equivalent of a shit fetish. Summer is killing me, I need to be doing productive mental work again.

>>
>>66366728
While i'm listening to an album I like to look up information about it: artists on the album, recording date, location, genre, influence, facts, etc. etc.
Like the/an artist on the album? Look up their other shit.
Like the genre and want to explore it? Look up major releases in that category.
Maybe one of their songs is a cover you like? Look up that artist and listen to them.
Like the label or recording engineer? Look them up.
This usually leads into me finding about 5 albums I want to listen to after this one.
Rinse and repeat, and you now have infinite music.

>Joy Division - Closer
This album is brutal compared to unknown pleasures. The end of the album is so full of sadness and slows down the upbeat catchy grooves that appeared on their first album. It's awesome, but it's also pretty morbid to think about how the lead singer killed himself shortly after recording this. Both of these albums have a dark post punk vibe to them, but they definitely require different moods to listen to them. Great stuff. Green Diamond/10
Favorite Track: The Eternal

And with that i finish my second chart. Lots of amazing albums on here and definitely some new favorites. Next chart incoming very soon.

Nat, I recently fell in love with Angel Olsen's Strange Cacti EP and saw you review it. I noticed you liked it but was interested in you mentioning you didn't like where her music was heading (generic indie rock or something). So I just wanted to ask if you had heard the new singles that had come out from her upcoming album because I can't get enough of it.

I love Strange Cacti and I'm probably going to really like My Woman when it drops but I do also hope she tries to write songs like the EP again

>V/A - African Scream Contest
I'm not a funk guy, I know this much by now. I don't mean to say that I dislike funk, because that'not the case at all, and in fact, I even like it. However, every time I am confronted with some supposedly amazing funk album and I listen to it, my standard reaction after finishing it is: "well, that was good, sure." The problem is that while it's easy for me to LIKE funk, I find it extremely hard to LOVE funk. It never manages to make a lasting impression on me, even if it scores high ratings and is lauded by people whose taste I trust. I don't even have to say anything about the music, because it's afro-funk, and if you know anything about funk and afro-funk in particular, you already know how much you will like it. I liked it, but I can't see the supposed genius here. 3.0-

>Robert Ashley - Dancing in the Sand
Perhaps a bit incoherent as a whole, but individually, the five pieces on this album are all very much worth listening to. The title track reminds me of Private Parts since it has Ashley's spoken word with a minimalist musical backdrop, this time featuring disorientingly paced piano and female vox. Halfway throughout the track, Ashley's muttering is overtaken by what seems like a jazz ensemble going for free improvisation, quite a nice twist. The rest of the album is part modern classical, part eerie spoken word tracks (the third track features samples of something in Dutch!), although the tracks with spoken word can't live up to Ashley's soothing musing. It's all good, and it's worth checking out for anyone interested in Ashley. 3.5-

>Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
Can I just say this is well-made and I can totally see why people like it, but it's just not my kind of pop music, and be done with it? Yes. 1.5+
>>
>>66372882
>Vijay Iyer & Wadada Leo Smith - A Cosmic Rhythm With Each Stroke
It's got piano, it's got trumpet, and it's ECM style jazz. Now you know exactly what it sounds like. And yeah, it's really pleasant, although I kinda wish it weren't over an hour in length, eventually the idea of ambient jazz with piano and trumpet wears off just a wee bit. 3.0-

>Dome - s/t
Kinda what happens when you take 154 by Wire and remove all the poppy elements and add a little more industrial music to the mix, I guess. Dome's basically Wire minus Colin Newman and Robert Gotobed (haha guess he went to bed), and I guess Newman's the one who was into writing the more song-like songs, because we're not having much of that here. There's songs, clearly, but by replacing hooks and choruses and all that good stuff with more unbridled experimentation, this album lacks a key charm that Wire albums do possess. You could do much worse in terms of industrial music, but eh. It's just not worth checking out, overall. 2.0

seeing a full, complete freeform chart is straight up sexually gratifying

1905 - Voice (2002)
>screamo

The screamo itself is good, it's lo-fi, passionate, a bit unfocused, but still good. It'd never stand as a favorite of mine in the genre, but I do like it a fair bit. But I just can't get behind all the different fucked up genre experiments here, there are far too many shoddy contemporary folk songs here. And the clean vocals also do nothing for me. A perfectly good screamo album bogged down a bit by needless genre hopping.

Vashti Bunyan - Just Another Diamond Day
maximum comfort in this album
it's kind of really good early morning music, should have begun my day with it...
still, quite lovely and ahead of it's time, really warm guitar work

Curtis Mayfield - Curtis
Yea, it was good, Move On Up was far and away the best track here, it was a mammoth as well, going for the perfect length
While I do understand and appreciate the political aspect of this album, it was a little heavy handed in it's execution.

คณะ รุ่งทวี - แห่สดดนตรีพื้นบ้านหนองโก ชุดที่ 8 + 9

I've gotta be honest, I really did not like this as much as I expected I would. I was really hoping for a new favorite with this record. Unfortunately, that did not happen.

Sure, it's definitely a unique album. It's an interesting collection of continuous solos played over some cool percussion. It starts off energetically and stays that way till the end. The experience is definitely one of a kind. Does that mean I enjoyed it that much though? Sadly, no.

To me, it just seemed a bit boring and too showy after a while. The concept of a long series of solos is cool but I just don't think it was too well executed here. Things just started to sound the same and went on longer than necessary.

I don't think this is a bad album. Like I said, it's unique and I can see why that makes it great in the eyes of many. It just does not do much for me. Maybe this will change someday with a relisten. I really don't know. At the moment, I think it's just ok.

To sum things up:

Nice solos. A tad bit too gaudy and boring though. 2.5/5.

Cleveland Orchestra / Pierre Boulez performing Igor Stravinsky - Pétrouchka; Le Sacre du printemps (1992)
>modern classical, orchestral

In typical avant-teen fashion, I feel a near complusive need to give at least a 3.5 to every fucking classical release I hear, and this is no exception. I'm already a massive fan of the more famous Bernstein perfomance of La sacre du printemps, so I already knew I'd like this. Boulez is a wonderful conductor, and he brings a lot of energy to the piece, every drum hit is skull-rattling, every sharp, dissonant string gives me chills, it's a near-perfect piece and Boulez and the Cleveland Orchestra do it justice. Pétrouchka, however, I am not as fond of. It's still very good, of course, but just the specific style (it was a ballet, correct?) doesn't appeal to me too much. Still, nothing could drag down La Sacre du printemps.

3.5

Laidback space rock with shoegaze flourishes sounds like it should be the best thing ever, and when it succeeds at making it work it is really great, but holy fuck this album is due for a remix/remaster. When these guys are playing quietly the drums are near inaudible (which is pretty damning on itself when you're going for a funky sound) and when they go louder they never truly sound loud. Even with the volume turned all the way up and my eardrums telling me to fuck right off this still sounded limp. There's no punch, no spark, no nothing. I hope I just downloaded a shitty rip but this was disappointing.

My Woman is going to be a hoot, calling it now. Seriously though, it's nice we might be getting a "fun" Olsen album. Philemon Arthur and the Dung - Philemon Arthur and the Dung (1971)
>avant-folk

The backstory of this album is more interesting than the album itself. This is one of those artists that no one actually knows the existence of, but unlike the Residents they don't actively conceal their identities, it's just that no one actually knows them. Apparently they won a Swedish Grammy despite this fact, and despite that the music is fairly freaky and inpenetrable. To continue the Residents comparisons, this really does sound like it could be a folkier Residents, lots of primal sounds, chanting, and now with banging on an out of tune guitar and accordian! The freakier stuff is okay, but grates kinda easily and isn't all too original. But when it gets more pretty and pastoral it gets super enjoyable.

Aye I'm back from Cool Leg visit. Was fun and met some cool dudes. Roommate (not perminant one, just the guy I happened to be staying with) was a huge prog-lord with tool/metal shirts and an Opeth belt + talked a lot about Mike Patton. Never thought these people actually existed but there he was in all his glory. Oh boy.

Anyways here's this weeks numbers for anyone that cares. Don't care to talk about all 20, but feel free to call me out for disliking an album you enjoy if it makes you feel good.

Of those worth mentioning:
>Prowler in the Yard
Not quite on the level as Terrifier imo, but still damn good. Beginning and ending parts were just stupid edgy shit, but fun if you can get past that.

>Mingus Dingus Pringus Cringus Shingus
Some of his best shit here. "Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul" I recognize from somewhere, and I'm pretty sure might be on another one of his albums, but is just as welcome here. Can't get away with not mentioning BS II, which is also fantastic.

>Dreamworld
Shit's evil. I swear on my soul this album is some sort of haunted, but that's partially a front, because this thing boasts some rad beats + lyrics. Influence to LUM is written all over this.

>Live at the Liquid Room, Tokyo
Some of the best boots n' pants I've heard yet. Not exactly my scene, but I could see this definitely going up with more listens.

>Point of Departure
good/10

Fun fact: the only reason you would ever be angry that someone gives something a bad score, is if you give their taste some credibility/legitimacy and have respect for their opinions.

Think about it. If you truly thought I had bad taste (which I do) you would be GLAD I gave something a bad score. I could see (although it would still be fucking dumb) being mad at a larger-scale reviewer for giving an album you enjoy or don't enjoy a bad or good score, respectively, because it inevitably has some bearing on the public's perception of the album. However, last time I checked I'm just some kid posting on the music forum of a website created to discus cartoons from Japan. But I guess I'm a bit more than that to you.

Yamir wins the first round!
I wasn't really impressed by any of the two, but Xiu Xiu were a bit more bold in their choices, with "Boy Soprano" and "PJ in the Streets..." being the highlights. I still prefer them when they get noisier, though. Probably what doomed David Darling was the typical obnoxious ECM production, because I really enjoyed the Wilcott parts. Garbarek was overall decent.

Fuuck, a storm knocked out my shit for a few days and now I'm conceptually behind.

>Kaytranada - 99.9%
>hip-hop

When it comes down to it, I really like the beats of this project. The beat can be classic hop, comfy, jazzy, a bit of soul, and a tad of modern. But what brings me down is two things 1: the vibe is all over the place, inconsistent, almost no flow. 2: I hated vocals'n'rhymes, really took me out of the album. I just did not like the way this guy sounded. Overall, this album is not for me.

nothing wrong with that imho desu

Where's the excuse? I'm clearly not excusing myself from having bad taste, I just think it's laughable people like you get so angry at my shitty opinions because for some reason you think they matter. And it's not like I've ever defended my opinion as fact whenever someone called me out for disliking something other than "I didn't enjoy it". I think it's high time to question which of us is cringy, pal

>go back to panning classic jazz albums
Will do!

>people like you get angry
I never even commented on any of your ratings or opinions

>because for some reason you think my shitty opinions matter
Youre assuming too much, I don´t think your opinion matters but we´re on a music discussion board, the idea behind it is to discuss music including what you like or dislike about albums with other people. Don´t get mad if some random people dislike your opinions for whatever reason. If you state why you disliked something there is no reason for you to get mad if someone disagrees with you. If you want to rate albums without any discussion or imput just use rym and don´t post here.

> it's not like I've ever defended my opinion as fact whenever someone called me out for disliking something
yeah I know, why are you even bringing that up.

>I think it's high time to question which of us is cringy, pal
lmao i think you just answered your own question there

I literally just told you to stop getting assblasted about people disagreeing with you, especially after stating ´´feel free to call me out for disliking an album´´
I don´t get why you felt the need to spout all that strawman crap in return
cool off for fucks sake, drink some lavender tea or something.

Every once in a while I'll listen to this and consider bumping it to a 10 on rym. Low key perfect contemporary folk album.

>>66382310
I find that Sgt. Pepper's is way too scattered and kitschy for my tastes, and that's coming from a fan of Piper at the Gates of Dawn. A lot of the tracks lack any sort of punch that early Beatles had, too, imo. I'm honestly kind of surprised you enjoyed it.

Completely agreed about songs of leo, very possibly the best contemporary folk.
It has so much melancholy and warmth and sincerity. It´s like memories of some old romance in the mediterranean atmosphere wise, absolutely tip top tier.
>>
>>66384597
Yeah, the lyrics are masterful even without the music, but the music is simply stunning, and the atmosphere is so real it's absurd. He never quite captured lightning in a bottle the same way on any of his subsequent albums (that I've heard anyway).

Man, all this jerkin' off Leonard Cohen makes me want to listen to that album again.

Speaking of circlejerks, I made a temporary /daily/core chart until toasters comes back.

Just realized I didn't include the album titles, but I think I can tack them onto the side. Also the background should be grayish, not black.

>>66384881
Just so I can sneak 8+9 into the top /daily/core line

PUT ME ON F4M I've been waiting like 2 months, replace Jesse's.
Luciano Cilio - Dell'Universo Assente
Andrew Hill - Compulsion
Dave Holland Quartet - Conference of the Birds

Mhm not a big fan of any of his later albums either, even love and hate i find is quite good but not great.

His debut just has that glow, feels soaked in emotion and absolutely inspired. Kinda reminds me of Visions of the Country in that aspect, another reason why I like it so much.

>all this jerkin' off Leonard Cohen makes me want to listen to that album again.
yeh I already gave up on denying the cravings and got on it

I have both, but not a lot of time unfortunately. Also, space and file size constraints are definitely limiting factors, but it does look like I could safely compress it further (maybe into the <2MB range) without losing readability. I could take a crack at it this weekend.
