Seems decent, and it's the industry standard at this point. I'm probably going to get an Ibanez ES-2 instead because it's so good for doing delay time change swells.

new electric cello man here

took it in to buy an amp today, decided on the Orange TH30. I am going to be buying some effects next week; could you guys rec me pedals not listed below? (The ones below are the ones I think I want after initial testing)

>Delay: EHX Memory Man with Hazari
>Reverb: Walrus Audio Descent
>Pitch Shifter: EHX Pitchfork
>>
>>66291477
I don't know if I'm master race, but I've got an Epiphone Thunderbird Classic-IV PRO as my first (and only) bass that cost over a hundred dollars new. My only electric guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul special ii GT. My other bass is a Rogue LX200b and my only other guitar is a 7ender acoustic.
>>
>>66291546
Descent has some weird clicking issues, I've heard. Get a looper and a drive/dist/fuzz
>>
>>66291578
I really like the Gain / Dirty Channel on my Orange, do I really need a tubescreamer on top of that?

If so I guess I'd just get a TS9

Did not know about the clicking on the Descent. What are other good reverbs

yeah it looks like a killer guitar, When i first saw Slipknot playing live and saw the guitarist was using a fender, it kind of blew my mind someone can play that kind of metal on an iconic, bluesy guitar. Its probably going to be my next guitar.

>>66291706
Analog delays are just as cheap as digital and they have different uses. It's tape delays that are gimmicky and retarded. in my opinion.
>>
>>66291791
As much as you like. Some people will say to let it sit. Fuck those morons.

But judging from the rest of your question, you need to watch a tutorial ASAP. The truss rod and the string saddles do different things, you need to use both to do a complete setup. Always tune to check your action.
>>
>>66291791
The primary way to adjust action is by lowering the bridge saddles. The truss rod is meant to compensate for the string's tension, and the bow produced by a vibrating string.

I'd say you shouldn't need to adjust the truss rod every day unless you're bass is shit. Go for the bridge saddles.

>>
>>66291883

>>
>>66291894
ive seen some tutorials and read other stuff about fret buzz. ive read that either the truss rod or the action can cause it

>>66291940
yeah i think its the saddles judging by the fact that i havent touched them yet and the bass is brand new
>>
>>66291791
It depends on the config itself. I don't go beyond 1/4 turn a day but I've got a twin truss rod. Half a turn should make a huge difference unless you fucked with it before.

>has some kind of shimmer / polyphonic mode

Not my pic, I just habitually save tiny pedalboard photos every time I see them.
I use a Holy Grail Nano. I set it to spring @ 1oclock and forget it. I don't see any point in changing up my reverb sound from song to song. My clean sound (a lot of reverb/slight slapback/little bit of modulation) is beautiful and I don't have any expensive pedals. I heard the HoF sucks. I tried all the Holy Grails.

>Although you may be a little short sighted if you need a manufacturer to feed you specific frequency responses over controlled test conditions.

Pickups don't matter so much that you need a dedicated electrical test- you can just do long-run weighted spectrum analysis and that's good enough. The broad curve you're trying to map (or if it's one of these new neodymium gimmicks, slightly waved line) manifests independent of the instrument it's on and the player playing and the etc. You normalize some tracks at continuous volume and feed that shit into your analyzer and there you go.

What bothers me is the fact that everybody defines these values differently. You get asked "hey so I want a less expensive alternative to the Bareknuckle Aftermath, and the Seymour Duncan Nazgul looks like that according to the ~TONE BARS~ so would that work?" and the answer is fuck no, because the SD Nazgul has a frequency response like the BKP Painkiller, which ain't what their shitty little graph would lead you to believe. Sure the Aftermath has a little more treble than the Painkiller in total, but it ain't distributed the same way.

This is irritating as a consumer because it's not just lazy, it's misleading. You can find reviews of people unhappy with pickups because they assumed, fairly on their part, that they'd sound like something else based on the dumb tone EQ crap, when in reality that's some awful garbage entirely removed from what shit actually sounds like.

I'm not asking for dudes in labcoats with liquid nitrogen- I'm not even asking for a labeled Y axis, I'm just asking for somebody to draw the frequency response based on a weighted spectrum analysis after some playing. They could do it in the same take as their stupid demo videos.

I need some advice /gg/

I'm in a new band (vocals and guitar), and we're planning on gigging quite soon, I'm hoping to invest in guitar amp gear.

I don't have anything other than practice amps, and don't have a heap of cash right now, so I'm wondering what can I get that's relatively cheap but giggable.

Genre is kinda post-punk/math/pop, guitar tones are kinda Gang of Four at the punkier edge, TTNG at the less softer edge, but all with a bit of chorus going on.

Should I get a separate head and cab? Should I get a decent head, and then upgrade cab later? Any brands/models/solid-state,tube decision opinions welcome.

Thanks guys
>>
>>66293364
Definitely go for a combo. The minimum volume required is enough to play with a loud drummer. Lots of amps of various sizes and wattages can do this. But be aware, it takes less energy to amplify high frequencies than low ones. So the more powerful your amp is, the more your bassist will have to get/spend. Don't be a dick and get a stack.

That's what I'm doing. Transcribe just allows you to slow down the song, loop certain parts, change the pitch, EQ everything, etc. It helps, a lot, but you still have to do it by ear at the end of the day. It's just more efficient this way. And good luck learning a bassline by ear in a song where it's drowned out by a bunch of wind instruments and drums, especially on old recordings.

I have a newer one. The effects apart from drive and distortion are great. Lots of clean gain on tap as well. That said, they dedicate a lot of the pedal to amp sims and distortion, which are only really good for practice or clean sounds.

The magnets have lost a little power since the 60s so they sound a bit cleaner. You can simulate that by having it a little underwound.

My favorite single coil guy is Don Mare, he can wind you a strat pickup to your taste. Jason Lollar is also good, but I don't know if he does custom stuff.

>How
I just kind of fuck around until a song forms. Find a riff that sounds cool, and most of the time it turns into an intro or verse riff. Choruses are riff variations of a chord progression. Just kind of noodle around with riff ideas to find pieces that flow together.

>what instrument do you write them on
Obviously guitar first and foremost. I track the guitar parts then program drum sequences over it. Bass gets added last. Sometimes I'll add some midi stuff like E. piano or strings, but not that often

>Who are your biggest influences
I don't play that type of music much anymore, but John Frusciante is probably my biggest guitar influence. My writing style now is based a lot on bands like Chon and Plini, or more metal stuff like The Black Dahlia Murder

>>
>>66301757
This might be a little counterintuitive, but have you tried hybrid picking? Because you'll be using your index finger and thumb for holding the pick, it'll force you to use your pinky like classical technique would use the ring finger, so at least you'll get some practice out of it.

There's a couple of guys that do it most notably classical guitarist Stepan Rak,

He shoehorns using it for his compositions, but it seems of little use for conventional repertoire.

I had lessons with him for a few weeks a while back and certainly gave it a go, but there's always a big tonal difference between the pinky and the other fingers. Once the novelty of the new technique had worn off, it seemed of little use.

It's hard to compare banjo to guitar. first off its hard to make a banjo sound like it isn't a banjo, which can make it hard to blend in with other instruments, unless you want to play bluegrass or some faggy mumfjords and sons type shit.

if you just want an instrument you can pick up and strum some open chords with, banjo is pretty cool. it's open tuned, which makes it really easy just to fuck around with. however if you're interested in bluegrass, be prepared for a struggle. bluegrass is extremely disciplined and stylistic. if you want to jam with a bluegrass group there is a specific thing you have to do. if that type of rigid structure isn't you're thing, don't even bother trying to play bluegrass banjo.

It used to click sometimes but mine doesn't do it anymore. If you're slow with the knobs it won't do that.

The bigger problem with the Descent is that you have to reset your knobs every time you use it if you're not using a preset setting.

The thing does have 8 different knobs and and 2 octave / wet/dry mixes so a lot of stuff can be done with it.

Yes hello.

I'm brand new to playing, few days ago. Everything I play sounds like wank and I'm paranoid it's because my guitar was in the attic for about 9 years. I know it's probably because my fingers are wrong or something but I'd like to know what an experienced person would do in my situation to make sure their guitar is ok.

Another this, how the fuck do I put the guitar down? if I lean it against something, it's against the tuners and it goes out of tune. If I lie it on my bed like a babby, it's still on the tuners. If i put it face down, it's on the string then. What do I do?
>>

not really, you're going to get a very dirty SRV blues type of crunchy sound. it can work for a lead sound, no doubt, but if you want high gain stuff you'll probably want a different pedal

You didn't tell us what kind of guitar it is. I'm just gonna assume it's an old acoustic. First thing you should check out is the neck to see if it's straight or not.
To store you guitar, you can either buy a stand or leave it in it's case but leaning it on a wall is not a good idea.

The pinky has an unshakable tinny, bright tone simple because there's no good way to shape the nail and strike with it at a proper angle.
There's very little repertoire that uses it and most it that does is contemporary.
We'll use our thumb to strike any combination of the bass strings during chords if needed while leaving the trebles to our i, m, and a fingers.

tubes are not a pain in the ass to maintain. the only time you really have to worry about tubes is if you are travelling and moving the amp around a lot.

tubes last a long time. i have a 76 twin reverb and it had the same tubes in it for like 25 years before i switched them out with new ones, and i only did that because i didn't want to damage the tubes because i was using the amp for gigs.
>>

The can last years, even decades depending how much and how loud you play.

This is A-Maj7. It can be the I chord in the key if A major, or the IV chord in the key of E major.

>x5767x

This is D-Maj7. It is can be the I chord in D mojor or the IV chord in A major.

If you are playing these together you are playing the I and IV in A major.

Move those shapes up and down the fret board to get different chords. The first shape has the root on the 6th string, the second shape the root is on the 5th string.
>>
>>66304838
did you put a set of strings on it or are you using what it came with? thicker strings are more difficult to bend, it doesn't really have anything to do with the brand, it's just the size itself. i'm assuming it just has thicker strings on it than what you're used to.

the only other things that affect how difficult/easy it is to bend a string is scale length and string height, the longer the scale length/the higher the string height, the more difficult it will be to bend it

>>

I try to. I usually write for one guitar only as I don't really know what to do with the bass. Eventually I add one, or another guitar if I have an harmony in mind. I do it all on guitarpro, it's faster.
Problem is I can't really put up anything together that sounds cohesive. Regardless of whether I play in a key or not.

>>66304779
I almost always use economy picking, it gives a great, smooth legato without too much effort, and it feels easier. I'm also about 40bpm faster with it than if I alternate pick everything like Paul Gilbert.

>>66304838
Tension's what defines if a string's hard to bend, which itself depends on scale lenght and linerar mass (in that case the gauge you could say). So either it is longer than your previous guitar (if you went from an LP to a strat for exemple), either it is the strings.
Guitar strings are 5 bucks a pack anyway, you're not risking your life.

>>66304896
Moving the shape won't change the chord itself, but its tonality. If you'd play x7989x, it would still be a Maj7 chord, but an E-Maj7 instead. (which would I in the key of E major or IV in B major)

that's the way GAS works

once you are infected with GAS, the formula for for ideal amount of guitars is always x+1.

x = the amount of guitars you already own

I only have one guitar though. It's just that there's one I don't really want anymore.

my old guitar was really easy to bend and i just found out i was bending wrong with my fingers and not my wrist like you're apparently supposed to do. used my wrist and it bent right. guess i should keep on these strings until i learn how to do it right

Bright OD, cut down bass, cut down the topmost frequencies so it doesn't end too shrill.
Use proper equipment, it sounds like you're just running an OD through your pc's mic input.

Are you really supposed to do that ? I use my fingers, never had any trouble with it, and trying out with the wrist right now I think it feels awkward.

define proper equipment, i know nothing about guitar equipment. i'm using a DS-1 with volume set to max distortion set to min and brightness to max, and an ESP LTD EX-50 i got from the pawn with brightness to max running into my interface

everyone always says to use your wrist when bending, but you can't always do that in every situation. there's a standard bend that a lot of people use, you bend something on the G string with your ring finger, and you play and hold a note on the B string one fret up from the bend. you can't really bend that with your wrist, it's just awkward.

You can also get lipstick tube copies that fit in single coil slots

throw in some amp sims and impulse response then, it should be better

It's cool and all, but teles without coil pickups kinda defeat the purpose. It's a nice guitar though.
