Hey GG, does anyone here play anything besides guitar?

a delay should not cost so much in this day & age
Also analog delay is a shitty meme that needs to die
How do I play like TK from Ling Tosite Sigure, yes I am a weeb.
>>66290925
I appreciate that Jim Root has good tastes despite the aesthetic of Slipknot. It would be nice if there were more decent guitars like his in the metal world instead of meme machines.
>>66290576
post clip of you playing anything remotely technically difficult please
>>66291181
But I actually like the sound of analog delay.
>>66290930
Seems decent, and it's the industry standard at this point. I'm probably going to get an Ibanez ES-2 instead because it's so good for doing delay time change swells.
>>66290930
The name always makes me think it's a looper and not a delay, therefore I hate it

who /epiphone/ master race here?
new electric cello man here
took it in to buy an amp today, decided on the Orange TH30. I am going to be buying some effects next week; could you guys rec me pedals not listed below? (The ones below are the ones I think I want after initial testing)
>Delay: EHX Memory Man with Hazari
>Reverb: Walrus Audio Descent
>Pitch Shifter: EHX Pitchfork
>>66291477
I don't know if I'm master race, but I've got an Epiphone Thunderbird Classic-IV PRO as my first (and only) bass that cost over a hundred dollars new. My only electric guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul special ii GT. My other bass is a Rogue LX200b and my only other guitar is a 7ender acoustic.
>>66291546
Descent has some weird clicking issues, I've heard. Get a looper and a drive/dist/fuzz
>>66291578
I really like the Gain / Dirty Channel on my Orange, do I really need a tubescreamer on top of that?
If so I guess I'd just get a TS9
Did not know about the clicking on the Descent. What are other good reverbs
>>66291297
yeah it looks like a killer guitar, When i first saw Slipknot playing live and saw the guitarist was using a fender, it kind of blew my mind someone can play that kind of metal on an iconic, bluesy guitar. Its probably going to be my next guitar.
>>66291546
>>66291578
Another TH30 and Walrus Audio Descent owner. Can confirm audible clicking when moving any knobs on it.
It does not affect if you use an expression pedal, but it is jarring.
>>66291638
I won't be using an expression pedal most likely, cause I have to play sitting down. What are some other good reverbs to try?
Anything that is colorful / spacey / lush, I like.
>>66291312
I like it too, but I like the sound of digital "analog" delay just as much. It's not hard to emulate delay.
>>66291629
>iconic, bluesy guitar
>EMGs
>>66291690
I should add that it should let you use presets (does that mean it has to be digital?)
>>66291721
i just mean how its a telecaster, the specific model is pretty far from blues
>>66291546
Upload clips pls. I played cello in school and have been meaning to mic it and run it through some pedals.

i will brudder, but the amp i wanted (the combo) wasnt in stock and they ordered it from my local sam ash
how much should you loosen the truss rod in a day? im getting crazy fret buzz on my bass and ive already moved adjusted the truss rod about a half turn
could i fix it by adjusting the string height at the bridge or no
>>66290576
sad post
>>66290930
fun fact, the white parts are glow in the dark. at least in the version I have.
>>66291706
Analog delays are just as cheap as digital and they have different uses. It's tape delays that are gimmicky and retarded. in my opinion.
>>66291791
As much as you like. Some people will say to let it sit. Fuck those morons.
But judging from the rest of your question, you need to watch a tutorial ASAP. The truss rod and the string saddles do different things, you need to use both to do a complete setup. Always tune to check your action.
>>66291791
The primary way to adjust action is by lowering the bridge saddles. The truss rod is meant to compensate for the string's tension, and the bow produced by a vibrating string.
I'd say you shouldn't need to adjust the truss rod every day unless you're bass is shit. Go for the bridge saddles.
>>66291883
Is the Cathedral worth the premium over a Holy Grail? I love the spring on my Blues Jr but it totally fucks up the sound of my Mastotron for some reason.
>>66291883
How is the Cathedral? I have a HoF and it sucks shit.
>>66291894
ive seen some tutorials and read other stuff about fret buzz. ive read that either the truss rod or the action can cause it
>>66291940
yeah i think its the saddles judging by the fact that i havent touched them yet and the bass is brand new
>>66291791
It depends on the config itself. I don't go beyond 1/4 turn a day but I've got a twin truss rod. Half a turn should make a huge difference unless you fucked with it before.
speaking of Reverbs, need a rec for the following:
>lets you do 100% wet mix
>lets you do presets
>has some kind of shimmer / polyphonic mode
>>66291952
>>66291965
Not my pic, I just habitually save tiny pedalboard photos every time I see them.
I use a Holy Grail Nano. I set it to spring @ 1oclock and forget it. I don't see any point in changing up my reverb sound from song to song. My clean sound (a lot of reverb/slight slapback/little bit of modulation) is beautiful and I don't have any expensive pedals. I heard the HoF sucks. I tried all the Holy Grails.
>>66292077
Strymon Big Sky. Expensive but You'll never need another reverb for the rest of your life.
>>66292073
it was new so i figured it would need some adjusting. i mightve loosened it too much actually but ill deal with that later.
>>66287715
>Although you may be a little short sighted if you need a manufacturer to feed you specific frequency responses over controlled test conditions.
Pickups don't matter so much that you need a dedicated electrical test- you can just do long-run weighted spectrum analysis and that's good enough. The broad curve you're trying to map (or if it's one of these new neodymium gimmicks, slightly waved line) manifests independent of the instrument it's on and the player playing and the etc. You normalize some tracks at continuous volume and feed that shit into your analyzer and there you go.
What bothers me is the fact that everybody defines these values differently. You get asked "hey so I want a less expensive alternative to the Bareknuckle Aftermath, and the Seymour Duncan Nazgul looks like that according to the ~TONE BARS~ so would that work?" and the answer is fuck no, because the SD Nazgul has a frequency response like the BKP Painkiller, which ain't what their shitty little graph would lead you to believe. Sure the Aftermath has a little more treble than the Painkiller in total, but it ain't distributed the same way.
This is irritating as a consumer because it's not just lazy, it's misleading. You can find reviews of people unhappy with pickups because they assumed, fairly on their part, that they'd sound like something else based on the dumb tone EQ crap, when in reality that's some awful garbage entirely removed from what shit actually sounds like.
I'm not asking for dudes in labcoats with liquid nitrogen- I'm not even asking for a labeled Y axis, I'm just asking for somebody to draw the frequency response based on a weighted spectrum analysis after some playing. They could do it in the same take as their stupid demo videos.

>>66292916
You have to be 18 years old to use this website.
I need some advice /gg/
I'm in a new band (vocals and guitar), and we're planning on gigging quite soon, I'm hoping to invest in guitar amp gear.
I don't have anything other than practice amps, and don't have a heap of cash right now, so I'm wondering what can I get that's relatively cheap but giggable.
Genre is kinda post-punk/math/pop, guitar tones are kinda Gang of Four at the punkier edge, TTNG at the less softer edge, but all with a bit of chorus going on.
Should I get a separate head and cab? Should I get a decent head, and then upgrade cab later? Any brands/models/solid-state,tube decision opinions welcome.
Thanks guys
>>66293364
Definitely go for a combo. The minimum volume required is enough to play with a loud drummer. Lots of amps of various sizes and wattages can do this. But be aware, it takes less energy to amplify high frequencies than low ones. So the more powerful your amp is, the more your bassist will have to get/spend. Don't be a dick and get a stack.
>>66293364
Budget?
>>66293562
>>66293562
€500 at the moment, though I can save over the next while and at least double that by the end of the year. We're hoping to gig by October though
>>66293521

Anyone used a Vox Lil Night Train? I'd appreciate some comments whether they're any good

You don't need the USB adaptor. The mic and your interface use XLR plug/sockets so you need an XLR cable and that's it.

Meh, might as well have more. I'm big on "form follows function." It doesn't hurt to have the option.
>>66294453
Take this chance to put the bridge pickup a little further from the bridge than usual. You'll probably end up using it just as much as the other pickups.
>>66293786

You can probably get them better seperately. Pro-audio bundles always seem to scimp on the accessories bit. Plus a used stand will be no worse than a new one.

>>66296124
It's an EUB, they also have a Cello, a Violin and the "omnibass" (eub with bassguitar scale length) though. And sou can have straps for the eub as well.
Anyone have the zoom B1xon or B1on? Do you recommend either, and if so, is the extra 20 on the x model justified?

I transcribe a LOT of shit, and I use a program called transcribe for that. Besides that, learning by ear and coming up with basslines. But full songs? No.
>>66296402
but anon, learning to play a song by ear is really fun. it's like a puzzle or something.
>>66296248
They still sell these? Well, look for one on craigslist. I see those and newer models all the time for pocket change. Pretty well known reliable gear, too.
>>66296471
reading comprehension:
>>66296539
You forgot to finish your post, retard.
>>66296471
>learning to play a song by ear is really fun. it's like a puzzle or something
That's what I'm doing. Transcribe just allows you to slow down the song, loop certain parts, change the pitch, EQ everything, etc. It helps, a lot, but you still have to do it by ear at the end of the day. It's just more efficient this way. And good luck learning a bassline by ear in a song where it's drowned out by a bunch of wind instruments and drums, especially on old recordings.
>>66296471
Don't be stupid.
>>66296487
They look cheap, but I've heard some demos and they can do a lot of shit for the money.
>>66296600

People think "good for the money" means good, but it actually means "shit but it's the only thing that even works at that pricepoint".

Clean your room.
>>66296601
I have a newer one. The effects apart from drive and distortion are great. Lots of clean gain on tap as well. That said, they dedicate a lot of the pedal to amp sims and distortion, which are only really good for practice or clean sounds.
I guess the big muff is okay, actually.
I honestly don't think I'll ever bother with other effects that the zoom can already handle, apart from aforementioned drive and distortion.
>>66296729
Nobody thinks that. The phrase fucking exists to be a disclaimer.
How come you never post your dano here? Also, I don't get how the pickups' height adjustment works on those. They're screwed in to the back, but what's the routing like to accommodate that.

The magnets have lost a little power since the 60s so they sound a bit cleaner. You can simulate that by having it a little underwound.

I just kind of fuck around until a song forms. Find a riff that sounds cool, and most of the time it turns into an intro or verse riff. Choruses are riff variations of a chord progression. Just kind of noodle around with riff ideas to find pieces that flow together.
>what instrument do you write them on
Obviously guitar first and foremost. I track the guitar parts then program drum sequences over it. Bass gets added last. Sometimes I'll add some midi stuff like E. piano or strings, but not that often
>Who are your biggest influences
I don't play that type of music much anymore, but John Frusciante is probably my biggest guitar influence. My writing style now is based a lot on bands like Chon and Plini, or more metal stuff like The Black Dahlia Murder
What is the most important factor to the full, warm and rich jazz guitar sound? Thibk Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass kind of sound. Is it the pickup, the amp, or the fact that they use a hollow bodied?

>>66300602
as far as i was aware only eb sold a pre-packed set of 10-52, but google tells me d'addario also sells one. i'm too lazy/drunk to look further into it, but it's not really a common set. plus i'm a fan of eb for some reason. maybe the brightly colored packing or something.
either way, i like the wound top 3 with solid bottom 3, as opposed to a lot of heavier sets that have a wound g.

Anyone here use a Fender Mustang II? How is it for a cheap lil bedroom practice amp?
>>66301068
no way, heaps of brands do 10-52, it's pretty common.
How many of you guys use your pinky for fingerpicking? I know classic technique is just the other 4, but I'm trying to make my pinky work but it fucking sucks
Any exercises or anything to help? Or should I just keep using it until it's a god

anyway, you got anything to say about playing 10-52s? not to reiterate what i said above, but i fucking love them, yet some hate them. weird how people have opinions.
>>66301757
my fingerpicking started with banjo, so im crippled by just picking with my thumb and first 2. still make it work though. if you want to use your pinky, just use it until it gets good.
>>66301757
This might be a little counterintuitive, but have you tried hybrid picking? Because you'll be using your index finger and thumb for holding the pick, it'll force you to use your pinky like classical technique would use the ring finger, so at least you'll get some practice out of it.
>>66301926
Oh that's a great idea. My hybrid picking sucks ass too, so that'd get 2 birds with one stone.
>>66301829
How does playing banjo compare to guitar? I've been interested in getting one for a while

I've played one before. Has a good sound for the price but goddamn is it ugly. Throw some cool stickers on it and it'll be worth it.
So am I right in thinking the Fender Bassbreaker 15 head has a bright switch, but isn't foot switchable?
>>66301757
There's a couple of guys that do it most notably classical guitarist Stepan Rak,
He shoehorns using it for his compositions, but it seems of little use for conventional repertoire.
I had lessons with him for a few weeks a while back and certainly gave it a go, but there's always a big tonal difference between the pinky and the other fingers. Once the novelty of the new technique had worn off, it seemed of little use.

what can you guys tell me about the following two chords:

Even 1960 reissues have thinner necks than 59s!
Standards have a lot thinner necks. The new ones also have an asymmetric profile.

shellac - harmonic perculator. if you're looking for a big black sound, some guy bought a cheap and shitty analog delay pedal and turned the feedback up to max and the delay time to zero. i think a chorus pedal also could work for that big black sound. you can find harmonic perculator clones online. the original ones are rare & expensive as fuck.
>>66302059
It's hard to compare banjo to guitar. first off its hard to make a banjo sound like it isn't a banjo, which can make it hard to blend in with other instruments, unless you want to play bluegrass or some faggy mumfjords and sons type shit.
if you just want an instrument you can pick up and strum some open chords with, banjo is pretty cool. it's open tuned, which makes it really easy just to fuck around with. however if you're interested in bluegrass, be prepared for a struggle. bluegrass is extremely disciplined and stylistic. if you want to jam with a bluegrass group there is a specific thing you have to do. if that type of rigid structure isn't you're thing, don't even bother trying to play bluegrass banjo.

It used to click sometimes but mine doesn't do it anymore. If you're slow with the knobs it won't do that.
The bigger problem with the Descent is that you have to reset your knobs every time you use it if you're not using a preset setting.
The thing does have 8 different knobs and and 2 octave / wet/dry mixes so a lot of stuff can be done with it.

>>66290309
Yes hello.
I'm brand new to playing, few days ago. Everything I play sounds like wank and I'm paranoid it's because my guitar was in the attic for about 9 years. I know it's probably because my fingers are wrong or something but I'd like to know what an experienced person would do in my situation to make sure their guitar is ok.
Another this, how the fuck do I put the guitar down? if I lean it against something, it's against the tuners and it goes out of tune. If I lie it on my bed like a babby, it's still on the tuners. If i put it face down, it's on the string then. What do I do?
>>66303471
get a guitar stand, they're like $10
>>66302862
not really, you're going to get a very dirty SRV blues type of crunchy sound. it can work for a lead sound, no doubt, but if you want high gain stuff you'll probably want a different pedal
>>66303471
You didn't tell us what kind of guitar it is. I'm just gonna assume it's an old acoustic. First thing you should check out is the neck to see if it's straight or not.
To store you guitar, you can either buy a stand or leave it in it's case but leaning it on a wall is not a good idea.

The pinky has an unshakable tinny, bright tone simple because there's no good way to shape the nail and strike with it at a proper angle.
There's very little repertoire that uses it and most it that does is contemporary.
We'll use our thumb to strike any combination of the bass strings during chords if needed while leaving the trebles to our i, m, and a fingers.

>>66304429
tubes are not a pain in the ass to maintain. the only time you really have to worry about tubes is if you are travelling and moving the amp around a lot.
tubes last a long time. i have a 76 twin reverb and it had the same tubes in it for like 25 years before i switched them out with new ones, and i only did that because i didn't want to damage the tubes because i was using the amp for gigs.
>>66304429
Just get an Axe-Fx. No maintenance and sounds just as good
>>66304429
Tubes aren't a PITA at all.
The can last years, even decades depending how much and how loud you play.
Biasing your tubes hot will shorten their lifespan, but you can still get years out of them

any guitar will do. you need to invest in pedals.
>>66302298
>5x6654
This is A-Maj7. It can be the I chord in the key if A major, or the IV chord in the key of E major.
>x5767x
This is D-Maj7. It is can be the I chord in D mojor or the IV chord in A major.
If you are playing these together you are playing the I and IV in A major.
Move those shapes up and down the fret board to get different chords. The first shape has the root on the 6th string, the second shape the root is on the 5th string.
>>66304838
did you put a set of strings on it or are you using what it came with? thicker strings are more difficult to bend, it doesn't really have anything to do with the brand, it's just the size itself. i'm assuming it just has thicker strings on it than what you're used to.
the only other things that affect how difficult/easy it is to bend a string is scale length and string height, the longer the scale length/the higher the string height, the more difficult it will be to bend it
>>66296328
I do.
I use guitar mainly obviously. Track drums first in EZ Drummer 2. Then write guitar parts to drums. Then bass.
I'd say my biggest influences are Thomas Erak and Mark Holcomb.
Who /Vox/ here?
What is a pedal that will produce similar effects to the digitech space station? Giving me a colorful, synth sound?
>>66296328
I try to. I usually write for one guitar only as I don't really know what to do with the bass. Eventually I add one, or another guitar if I have an harmony in mind. I do it all on guitarpro, it's faster.
Problem is I can't really put up anything together that sounds cohesive. Regardless of whether I play in a key or not.
>>66304779
I almost always use economy picking, it gives a great, smooth legato without too much effort, and it feels easier. I'm also about 40bpm faster with it than if I alternate pick everything like Paul Gilbert.
>>66304838
Tension's what defines if a string's hard to bend, which itself depends on scale lenght and linerar mass (in that case the gauge you could say). So either it is longer than your previous guitar (if you went from an LP to a strat for exemple), either it is the strings.
Guitar strings are 5 bucks a pack anyway, you're not risking your life.
>>66304896
Moving the shape won't change the chord itself, but its tonality. If you'd play x7989x, it would still be a Maj7 chord, but an E-Maj7 instead. (which would I in the key of E major or IV in B major)

>>66305962
>Are you really supposed to do that ? I use my fingers, never had any trouble with it, and trying out with the wrist right now I think it feels awkward.
everyone always says to use your wrist when bending, but you can't always do that in every situation. there's a standard bend that a lot of people use, you bend something on the G string with your ring finger, and you play and hold a note on the B string one fret up from the bend. you can't really bend that with your wrist, it's just awkward.

Opinions on Andyguitar for first time learners?
The OP says Justinguitar but I've been using Andy. He's really nice and he's British but sometimes he forgets to tell you things like how chords go with the lyrics on songs, or how, like with pic related, the X means you're not supposed to play that string.

Never plug a head into something other than a Cab, or these DI kind of things like the shitty mesa cab clone or two notes torpedo live.
"big amps" doesn't mean anything, there's small as fuck heads and cabs (orange micro terror and the 1x8") and huge loud combos (twin reverb).
As far as modelling goes, plugins are good, you need a lot of tweaking, but you will get the results, there's no need to bother with an actual amp and cab if you can't push it loud.
>>66306527
Too bad I'll never find any of them used in my area.
I'm really curious about the 7 string model too, even though the absolutely massive range is kinda useless on bass. As far as I've tried, 6 stringed SRs were great and easy to play.
Hello dear /gg/
I read the bassist for Bolt Thrower has a tube screamer so I went and got one on discount. It's a TS9 model. Problem is I use a lot of my low end. Should I add an eq pedal to raise the low end or some sort of bass booster? Or am I better off buying the bass version?

either way can work. If you boost your bass beforehand the TS will probably eat it. I don't have one to play with but it will make the thing fuzzier and less gritty, because you'll need to lower the gain. Be sure to try this out. Boosting afterwards is a bit of a safer bet.
>>66307605

there's no foot switches for it at all. no foot switch to change the distortion levels, no foot switch for reverb. it's all on the amp.

Stop buying fucking reverb. You don't need it. When playing gigs there's more than enough natural reverb in the stadium
>>66309264
I don't know of any good general guide, but I'd say it's worth looking up what all the parts of a guitar do, and maybe just watch a couple setup/repair videos. Knowing what sort of problems guitars can have, and which are easy or difficult to fix will give you a better idea of the things that aren't essential to pay for(easy to fix) and the things you shouldn't skimp on (hard or expensive to fix).

What is the quintessential pedal for a bassist? I got some in mind but i don't know which one I'd use the most:
>compression
>overdrive
>D.I
Or others that maybe I didn't think of? I already have a tuner and a looper too.
>>66309623
i've been playing out for 8 years and have only played in maybe 2 places that sounded good, both of them were banquet hall sized rooms
bars sound awful
>>66309623
It depends on what you play really. If you mostly play with a dry sound (most rock music) then I would agree with you, excessive reverb would only kill your attack. My style is more atmospheric so having unique reverbs really helps add complexity to your sound.
>>66309724
comp is the pedal. Necessary for both slap and certain punk styles. A delayed compression is how you get punchy attack. Every bassist ought to have one and I don't.
>>66309558

>How and on what instrument do you write them on?
Guitar. Just find a chord progression I like and try to go from there. It's usually some simple chords with some variations, extra notes or arpeggios that make it sound cool. Can't do better since I know minimal theory only.

Gustavo Cerati, Mike McCready, John Petrucci.

preamp tubes are nearly immortal and don't require biasing. They stay put and only pass a few mA during use.
Power tubes are responsible for pushing enough voltage and current to drive your speakers. If they're biased in a way that you're not trying to push every possible ounce of volume out of them, then they have long lives. I got ten years out of my Mesa's. Some amps are set to run on the verge of death and you might get only weeks out of them without more proper use.

Is there any reason for a beginner to buy a 1000$ electric guitar over a good 100$ one?

you wont find a good one for $100.

i'm buying the bullet strat from squire, is it good?

It's the risk between 'buy cheap, buy twice' vs 'will I actually bother to learn this and stick with it and therefore make it a worthwhile investment'
Best case scenario, buy something second hand that's cheap and good.

Seconded. Vintage Modified is also very worthwhile.

Not really. That said, there's lots and lots of $100 guitars not worth buying at all. Good ones are pretty rare. Seems to me about $120-150 is a better budget if you want to cheap out. Won't change the fact that the majority of those guitars will be shit, though.
If you find a good one, and set it up, a beginner won't be able to notice or benefit from the differences between it and a higher end guitar. When you eventually notice its shortcomings, you can fix it up or sell it.

I've noticed people that prefer thick necks tend more have their thumb on top.

Every sub 300$ guitar I've tried was shit. I paid 100$ for mine, had it for two years and it's falling apart. A guitar's a tool, if you cheap out on it, it's going to come back to bite you up the ass.
