What's /gg/'s opinion on Fender's Rumble amps? I'm thinking on getting on getting a 200W head for gigging with my punk band so I'm not looking nothing too fancy or expensive.
>>
>>66265037
If you can find a good deal on it then yeah, they're fantastic amps for gigging with. Most local bands I've seen have used it paired with an 810 or a 210/115 pair
>>
>>66265037
Personally I'm partial to Acoustic for cheap giggable bass amps. You should definitely check them out.

I've been playing on and off for about 10 years or so but recently had everything stolen by my junkie sister and her junkie friends while I was away from home.

Trying to replace everything on my budget and I'm debating between an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and a Gretsch Electromatic Pro Jet. I really like the coil splitting feature the Epi has but having the Epi branding feels tacky and cheep compared to the Gretsch.

Anyone have any experience with either guitar and would like to have input?

I'm also debating between the Roland Cube and Fender Mustang. I'm leaning towards the cube but would also like input there.
>>
>>66266213
>being that faggot who takes 30 minutes to setup because of his ratking of cables and pedals

>>
>>66266221

Is it really coil splitting? Or just coil tapping?
Are the humbuckers meant for true coil splitting?
Coil Tapped humbuckers sound like garbage, bro.

I hesitate to call it a meme, but it's applications are pretty meh.

Anyway, used to have an Electromatic Pro Jet. Great guitar, would recommend.

Own a jackson js35 guitar and I'm kinda bored of its no sustain licensed floyd rose bridge, so I'm looking for people to trade it with on the internet but no one wants it because of its retarded metal shape.
The other day some guy offered me an ltd ec50 and I'm seriously considering it because of its fixed bridge and its better looks, but I'm not too sure about it since it seems pretty cheap. Please give me some advice.
Tl;dr : jackson js35 or ltd ec50?
>>
>>66266221
Why you would want a ss modeling amp is beyond me, but the Roland is a better product. I've serviced both.
>>
>>66266269
It's probably coil tapping. I'm not sure of the difference.
>>66266273
I've contemplated murdering her over it desu.
>>66266286
The Electromatic like is Korean, not sure about the Epi.
>>
>>66266330
Because of my budget. Is there anything better in the price range? I know of that mini Orange amp head but I think even that is a little out of my range.
>>
>>66266333

Coil splitting cuts the output from one coil, leaving a true single coil.

Coil tapping just reduces the overall output of the whole humbucker to what a single coil output would be.

Splitting is great and all, but if the humbucker that's being split wasn't designed for it, you can often be left with a really thin, characterless sounding pickup.
>>
>>66266431
This is the model I was looking at. It says coil splitting.

That coil split would probably be pretty good. I absolutely despise the electronics in that guitar, and the push-pull pots break for, like, no reason at all.

Sold a couple of them when I worked at a small shop, both had issues with the knobs.

Just started teaching myself to play on an acoustic last week and I've nearly perfected some Neutral Milk Hotel songs and a couple of Modest Mouse songs. Just thought I would humble brag on here because it's anonymous and I don't want to sound pretentious to anyone I actually know. And also I don't even know if that's good time.

Anyway, just thought I would share my excitement.

So far I've just taught myself chords and read some tabs. How do I into lead guitar/music theory/reading music?

Also how do I start learning about the actual product, like the strings and the different makes and what have you... I bought a Rogue acoustic guitar, not really sure past that but I sure am obsessed, this is a lot more fun than I thought.

Please feel free to

I have the cheapest Gretsch there is, the Electromatic Jet Club. I really like it. It's a gorgeous guitar and it's only problems are the electronics are shitty and will likely fail on you after a year or so (super easy fix though), the pickups don't sound very good, and the frets are a little too small for my liking.
I got it because I wanted something nice looking that I wouldn't cry over losing or breaking when I was doing lots of small gigs and it served its purpose beautifully. It's a very smooth playing guitar and since it's pickup configuration is like a Les Paul, it really lends well to most types of music. I'd take it over an Epi any day

hey guys. i posted yesterday about what to do with buying a new guitar and what i should do with the shitty gear i started with; most of you recommended i get new friends, a couple of you steered me towards brands i should check out.

but anyways. i went to chicago music exchange today and checked out a bunch of stuff; reverends, epiphones, teles, mexican strats; the only thing that felt perfect was a tele, which is way way way out of my price range. one of the guitars i checked out tho, a danelectro, felt as close as i could get to that strat in terms of how it made me feel-- and it was actually in my budget! (significantly lower than it actually, at 370 or so bucks). the next upgrade i plan on getting when i have the money is a reverend (speaking of which, thanks for the rec guys. i have another friend who has one and i didnt believe him when he said they were awesome but when i actually got to play some of the other ones they had at cme i felt it)

anything i should know about before i actually make the purchase of the dano? am i being ridiculously stupid? im selling the shit stagg and im actually kind of sad to see the behringer go as i kind of like the fart box but i cant take it with me to college so.
>>
>>66272880

Danelectros have really cheap hardware, they will go out of tune. You could easily upgrade it though. All you would have to change is the tuners really.

>>

what's the difference between MXR dynamic compressor and super compressor
>>
>>66272983
This, but Gibson is practically always shit these days.

But is it even worth buying Fender American Std. anymore if all the parts are foreign sourced? I imagine this wasn't the case 15 years ago.
>>
>>66272934
ya my friend with the reverend drove me to cme and said the same thing. when i played it in the demo rooms it felt like it was going out of tune nearly as fast as my stagg was which worried me but i have so many gearhead friends that could fix it for cheap idrc.

>>66272997

59dc, i think its the nos+ model not sure tho. its in the lightish blue colorway. whats so cool about the pickups? i guess that was a big reason why i liked it over the strat i tried, it felt a lot smoother and warmer. (i honestly dont know anything about guitars, 95% of stuff ive been learning about the hardware ive learned in the last month. ive been doing music theory and playing for a year but never really cared about hardware until now)
>>
>>66273059
The differences between the two probably aren't worth the price imo. You could probably upgrade a MiM strat to have the same electronics and parts that an American has for relatively cheap
>>
>>66267139

implying anyone here plays shows
>>
>>66273084
that's a cool looking guitar, but as another anon mentioned the hardware might crap out on you at some point, which will not be good if you're away at college. Also, $370 is WAY too much for that guitar. It's not made of wood and its only redeeming quality is its pickups.

With that money you can buy a Squier Mememaster, Jaguar or Classic Vibe Strat/Tele. All great guitars as is, and much better modding platforms (so you could install lipstick pups somewhere down the line).
>>
>>66268311
I'm one of the techs. I more or less restring guitars for plebs that somehow think it's too hard to do.

ive been playing for close to two years and it seems like i dont really have finger independance, so when it comes to riffs that use out of key notes my fingers dont move as fast as if i was running a scale, i have to learn the riff with a whole new muscle memory which seems inefficient. try weird patterns for your fingers.

like for example, you know that positional finger warmup people use by playing frets 1-2-3-4 on the low E string then playing the same thing on the A string, then D string, etc, up and down the fretboard? try doing something like that, but instead of doing it 1-2-3-4, try something weird like 4-2-3-1, do it up the whole board and see if you can keep it consistent. it will probably feel very weird until you get used to it.

comp for sure. It isn't the essence of twang, but it's the difference between twang and country twang, if you get that. Slapback is a good idea to some degree or another. Spend some time dialing that in.

Most is really playing though. Use your bridge pickup and keep your tone wide open. Try mixing in some chicken pickin'. If you don't use your fingers you can still add some pops pretty easy with a heavy pick.

It's not as hard as it looks or sounds, it's really just about picking your positions well and really drilling it in. The main bit that always fucked with me was the four string sweep bit, mainly because I suck at sweeping across the same fret.

You're probably better off with an RG8 or one of the 28" Schecters for the price. I've found Agiles quality is REALLY hit and miss.

My only real gripe is everyone loves routing their eights for actives so you end up with giant rings if you stick an M8 or similar in.

I think that the main point regarding coil splitting when giving advice is pointing out how much output you lose. You get a drastic volume drop when splitting which sucks if you don't have a dedicated boost pedal to compensate for it.

As someone who has taken every theory course offered in undergraduate degree programs, other dude is right.

Not knowing where you are or what you're doing makes you listen more intuitively. It won't help you formulate a song, but it will help you come up with genuinely new ideas.

so ive been learning

-i know atleast all the open chords in the key of c major and can switch between them fast enough to play a song
-i can finger barre (and obv powerchords) but switching between them fast enough in a song can be a problem
-i know the minor pentatonic scale pattern
-i know the first two major scale patterns
-soloing on any of those patterns can be a bit rough. i know the basic theory of bends pullofs, hammerons and shit but i find it hard to come up with cool melodies, especially because i never really know which fret will sound like what so i cant really translate what i hear in my head to the guitar
- i know atleast where all the notes on the E string are and can deduce where each note is from there
-strumming technique sucks. i know some basic ones like down down up up down but i find it really hard to try and emulate the patterns on most songs just by hearing them
-my biggest problem is probably rythm. and eventually i wanna go into the direction of math and post rock so i think thats kind of important.
sometimes i come up with some melody, record that into reaper because i wanna try play over it or something like with a loop pedal and then im stuck not being able to figure out what time signature what i just came up with is in
-tapping is kind of a hige thhing in math rock and i have no idea how to do it how they do it. when i google i usually find more of the van halen kind of tapping lessons

where should i go from here especiallly with keeping in mind that i like mainly math rock, post rock (see chart)? should i try to learn some songs? i think its a problem that i never really learn songs and keep reading/practising theory rather than get practice actually applying it. i'm always a bit slow i think. when im just playing around, figuring out melodies or whatever irs always very low bpm i think.

You need some amount of professional instruction. Your eye hand coordination is poor, it's why you can't change chords, strum and have problems with rhythm. Learn how to juggle and throw a tennis ball at the wall and catch it with the same hand and alternate hands switching it up. Slow at first then faster, after about 2 weeks of 15 minutes a day you should see a marked improvement. You're fighting your body and need to get your hands working independently. It depends on what you're looking for. If you want crisp, clean repeats, this probably isn't it. First you set the trussrod, fret a string at at the first and last fret, and then see how much distance there is between the string and the 7th or 8th fret. Should be creditcard thick. After that you set the string height, that's basically pure preference. After that you do intonation again.

Hey, I have a question about my amp.

I made a mistake thinking I could buy a Fender Hotrod Deville 212 that had issues that i thought I could fix
>Faulty input jack
>Tubes going out
>plug kinda messed up.

I replaced all the tubes
Replaced the plug
Removed and soldered on a replacement input jack.

I even got a multimeter and biased the amp myself.

Problem is, it still doesn't sound right. I just want to get rid of it. Like it just makes me mad trying to play through it because I've had this exact model before and it is NOT the same.
>It breaks up...instantly
>It gets loud but not in the same way or as loud as I know it should. It's not warm
It's just not right

I got it for 300 but I just don't think anyone will be as stupid as me to waste 300 bucks on it. Or that I would have to be disingenuous in my craigslist post.

What the fuck should I do? Just toss it? Donate it? it does suck to waste money. Should I try to sell it for like 200? It may be a working amp for someone who doesn't play cleans. I dunno.

How did this guy blow his Soul Food (it's center negative)?

>>
>>66283076
you shouldn't have to much of a problem selling it online broken/as is for like 2-250.

Repairs are a crapshoot. Sometimes you'll get the amps that just need a dexoit cleanse or a new fuse, other times there will be so many things wrong with the amplifier you'll wish you had just started from scratch.

>"I foolishly plugged the Soul Food into my regular 9V daisy chain and it fried immediately."

you are now on your own
>>
>>66283269
Sorry, I'm new to this. The Soul Food page lists that it needs 9V of DC power to work. Why exactly did it break?
>>
>>66279741
Definitely learn some songs, especially when it comes to improvising and soloing. Sounds kind of backwards but learning other people's solos is a great way to understand how it works and what sounds best. Start with dad rock shit, easy to execute and relys heavily on the patterns you already know
>>
>>66283076
are you in CT? I think i saw that amp on craigslist
>>
>>66283452
These 9V jacks can come in 2 ways: positive-centered or negative-centered. If you plug in the wrong one, it's as if you put some batteries backwards. Some electronics con be damaged if current flows the wrong way.

These problems can be fixed with some diodes or transistors. I don't know why pedal companies don't put them in their designs.

Just don't be stupid, you shouldn't he able to break anything as long as you're just doing quarter circles, check the string relief, do it again, etc. Also, first check the string relief as I mentioned, maybe you don't even have to mess with the truss rod.

Pretty much.

Also, loosening isn't ever an issue. Tightening too much is what can cause problems but just go a quarter turn at a time and check in 10 minutes to see if it's already there.

Only idiots who think they have a lot to tighten and decide to give it 3 or 4 full turns at once break their truss rods or fuck up their necks.

There's a fucking phenomenal small shop in my city that has, for years, carried only the best stuff and employed the best technicians and luthiers. I'm lucky that the shop does enough business that it'll stick around for a while, and since they don't have major brands all they deal with is sweet small custom brands. But fuck Gibson, man. Fuck them.

So the string is touching the 7th fret when you press down like that? Then you need to add more relief, you need to lower the tension on the trussrod. That's usually counter clockwise, do a quarter turn, then tune all the strings again, then check again.
>>
>>66283996
>won't trade
Can you take a gut shot, then? I can probably copy it with some help from my friend then.
>>
>>66284100
I have the regular hoof, it's my favorite muff ever.

Never been much interested in the Cloven, since the changes is that it's no longer germanium, it's supposed to sound grittier (the best thing about the Hoof is the smooth muff sound it produces) and has more gain. The Hoof has already a shitton of gain.

They say the Cloven is for people who wish the standard Hoof had more but I've never been even close (and have never seen anyone else) to using any extreme settings on the Hoof, so I really don't know who they targeted.

There's a reason why the regular Hoof is still EQD's most popular and most sold pedal.
>>
>>66284045
If you've got extra money to spend they're well worth it. They're just not good enough to really warrant that big of an increase in price imo. But they're definitely better than regular D'addario's.

I could and wouldn't mind but a gut shot wouldn't help you since it would only show the backside of the PCB.

I'd have to fully disassemble it, remove the knobs, jacks and switches to take a shot of the front circuit. Also, in order to try to maintain some mystery around it, ZVEX has painted a few key transistors and other components so you can't identify it without desoldering it and stripping out that paint to check the model and values.

If that wasn't such a major pain in the ass I'd do it for you but yeah, I'm really sorry. You can probably find the schematic for the regular Woolly Mammoth and ask your friend to see if he can implement a footswitch to activate a 3-band EQ stack. It won't sound exactly the same because even the WM7 sounds different from the regular WM and there's the question about the unidentified components but it should at least be close.

>>66284194
Not familiar with Sleep. I personally wouldn't get the Cloven because I prefer Germanium muffs and the standard Hoof is basically just a green sovtek muff with added Mids control, which is perfect for me since I go a lot for that Black Keys tone.

That being said, the Cloven is probably fantastic as well. It's too bad they don't have a comparison between both but something has always hinted me that the reason the Cloven exists might be related to shortage (or cost) of Germanium transistors.

As I said, the relief only needs to be creditcard thick at the 7th or 8th fret. After that's done you can start messing around with string height. And once you're happy overall you should probably do your intonation again.
