It may seem obvious to you, but a lot of people don't understand or appreciate the importance of a good prompt.

I've been exploring tgchan, and for many of their quests the prompts are nonexistent. Everything is so slow and meandering that it's painful to read — I can't even imagine how boring and frustrating it must be as a player. Many of the few quests that do have acceptable pacing are railroaded with thinly veiled non-choices.

I think we need to praise and criticize our QM's prompts more often here in /cyoag/, because they really are more important than interesting characters or witty dialog or skilled art.

a weak prompt would be like asking what 1+1 is, because there's just one painfully obvious answer. There's no room for choice there and the 'prompt' is basically just a break between updates. See older NE threads for an example of this. Nips went pretty hard in writing long and detailed dialogue trees but some of his prompts essentially amounted to 'Wait for thing to happen'

What Coltshan has done in the past is not something any prospective QM should aim for. Going in blind without understanding the basics of your players, showing that you're actively unable to parse genuinely given advice, repeatedly starting and abandoning quests instead of trying to improve the problems that have been described to you. You should, in fact, aspire to be the opposite of what he's shown in every way but the tenacity.

Urban Survival and Unique for example are both entertaining stories to read, even when you're going through the backlog. Res in particular seems like the kind of guy that'd keep a table at a bar entertained with some dumb story the normie fuck.

JAD and M&M's backlogs on the other hand have been described as slogs to get through. Which tells me that the telling of the them is less entertaining than the playing of the them for some reason.

So apparently because I'm a glutton for making more work for myself than I initially set out to do, I've spent most of the night devising an upgrade system for the forthcoming airship cyoa. This is work in progress, but you can get the general idea of what's to be expected.

The airships don't run off your typical 'powder and ball' methods.

Instead the cannons are loaded with a magic-infused crystal, wherein the firing mechanism unleashes the magic housed within. So the cannons need to fitted with the proper runes to complete the spell trigger.

In addition, the ship has charging stations that can be used to replenish the magic in spent casing (drawing power from the ship's magic-crystal core). The upgrades allow you load crystals with the appropriate magic.

Your cannons literally shoot magic.

I think the issue is you're scaling it down too much. Forget about small stuff, just have the players decide what the cannons should upgrade (damage, range, penetration etc) And then have them decide what they sacrifice to get it.
So for example if they wanted to go all range then they could upgrade to long cannons, which are +range, +accuracy, -damage (because they take longer to load), and then buy penetration rounds, which are +range, +penetration, -damage (because they leave smaller holes).

Your cannon can be modified to fire more than one type shot. I never said that cannons were limited to one type and one type alone.

If your cannons are upgrade to accept, say, lightning and fire shots. Then when the time comes to attack, you can choose which shells to load and fire. Hell, you'll be able to mix and match if you're so inclined. Or at least that's the plan.

You need to estimate the choosing capabilities of the players, and in my experience, if the main feature of a ship is "this", then the players will always go for "this" first and foremost, which in turn makes it harder for the QM to integrate his vision into it.

Probably. But that doesn't mean it's the only option, the best option, or an available option. Take Unique for example. Players heavily relied on the barrier spear but it wasn't used all the time. In one instance they dropped a catwalk on an enemy. When it was used it wasn't just dropped as a move, how it was used changed with the situation.

Doing the same thing every time is only an option if the QM allows it.

Well I haven't revealed much about either of those so it'd probably be hard for them to talk about it.

The general consensus I got from previous discussion is that people prefer the privateer route. So you will definitely be a privateer in command of your own ship. The setting will most likely be a slight AU of the canon setting so you'll have your familiar settings and people, though probably a bit of change-up in the geo-political landscape so that's reason for conflict.

I'd like to point out that I like Nip's latest combat event which used a bit of a mix. It was descriptive, but the players mixed descriptive actions with the old moves. The movesets/abilities existing predefined like that gives a nice overview of what each character can do, which then can be applied descriptively. Nina can do this, this, and this, and anything that logically follows from those predefined moves.

It was a very nice foundation for the fight.

Yes, your ship can be fitted to do more than one thing. All I've shown is a glimpse at the potential firepower upgrades - I haven't even gotten into defensive or propulsion modifications. And by the way, there won't be numbers attached to these things - the mechanics will stay under the hood to the best of my abilities.

And it would certainly be in your best interest to keep your ship versatile, cause otherwise you'll be up shit-creek when you run into a challenge that'll eat your 'one thing' for breakfast.

I mean, sure you could get through a number of challenges just focusing on pure brute force. But no amount of brute force is going to help if you run into, say, a floating fortress that happens to be housing the glazed macguffin.

On a scale of 1-5, what degree of stat-basedness do you like in CYOAs?
The explanations are just examples, nothing iron-clad. Think of them as flavor text

>1 - Completely narrative-driven
Pretty much the only thing that matters is the plan the players came up with and the way the QM thinks would make for an interesting fight. There are no stats

>2 - Mostly narrative-driven
Still no real stats, but the MC may be for example "strong", so he would find it easier to accomplish strength-based actions - still no real stats, but the QM will base the outcome on whether or not the players have come up with a plan that matches the MC's build

>3 - Balanced
There are basic stats, but they're (mostly) hidden. More of an orientation for the QM, so if he thinks that a certain outcome will be better - narrative-wise - he may or may not decide to alter the outcome accordingly

>4 - Mostly stat-based
The MC has a variety of stats that can be increased/leveled up. Players can see all the explicit stats of the MC and maybe the enemy, so they will plan their actions according to the stats, but not every interaction has to be stat-based (like for example talking to an NPC and trying to convince him of something - the players would still have to come up with a plan)

>5 - Exclusively stat-based
A lot of stat for all relevant aspects. HP, Stamina, Strength, Magic, MP etc. etc.
Trying to convince an NPC of something? Well, what's your charisma and intelligence level? What level is his willpower? Roll [2d20+8], has to be higher than the enemy's [1d20+5].
Fights will be less of a narrative and more of a series of posts choosing attacks and rolling.

You can accentuate the fact that a character is "strong" or "dexterous" on purpose to make an underhanded notion to an stat system being there. It's a small distinction, but I agree with it not being completely narrative-driven. That would be when you simply don't have a stat system at all.

Well it was an example. "MC is an Earth Pony and therefore he's strong" would be more a case for 1, but "MC is a Pegasus and in addition to his natural agility, players made decisions - either during character creation or during the quest - that increased his strength. For example they decided to hit the gym frequently" would be more of a 2. Sure, both are in between, but as I said, the explanations are more of a flavor text, I couldn't think of great examples for all of it.
