Not up to snuff for modern industrial/defense use, but good enough for getting out of Dodge. Any legit modern Geiger counter would have a "GM pancake probe", as pictured. That's a Ludlum Model 3 ratemeter with a Model 44-9 pancake probe. They are fucking expensive, and the probes break when dropped. But they work for all current purposes except neutrons.

Oddly, emergency response people will NOT mock an intelligently prepared bugout bag. RFID blockers and smoke grenades are still a bit much, but rations and water purification are sound options. If you don't have KI (potassium Iodide), talk to your local emergency management agency about getting some, or go to ki4u. Remember, taking that much iodine has it's own health risks, and should only be taken when directed (a radioactive plume moving offsite with the potential to carry significant radio-iodine).
Remember, evacuations are also deadly. No one died from radiation in Fukushima, they died from infrastructure collapse (plus, you know, giant fucking earthquake). Stay calm, stay collected, and if someone severely fucks up your car, but it's still driveable, get well off the road, swap insurance cards, and keep going. It may not be worth the delay.
It really does bother me on a professional level that a citizen in an EPZ (Emergency Planning Zone) was awakened by an Emergency Alert System component and was then left in the lurch. That's fucked up on many levels.

Short version:
At midnight on Saturday night, Illinois's emergency management fucked up and set off the "The nuke plant is melting down!" sirens. An anon came on freaking out, and asking for info, as no one locally was saying shit. I stayed on for about 90 minutes while watching GoT and drinking heavily, until I was done with those 2 activities, and went to bed. Turns out, he was telling the truth.

Inspecting dentist's x-ray machines, hospital CT machines, industrial radiographers, etc. If SHTF, we hop in our shitty minivans and drive into the edge of the radioactive plume in order to find out how bad it is, so the emergency managers can give out proper orders. allcapsillinoisanon said he was preparing to shelter in place, which would have probably been the correct order.

Sounds like a radiation release is your most likely threat. On top of your other preps, think about getting one of those home weather stations, and some flavor of Geiger counter/radiation detector. Also have a case of duct tape, a roll of visqueen, a couple dozen HEPA furnace filters, and a bunch of bedsheets and pillowcases on hand.
If you need to seal up your house, that stuff will help a lot.
