these are still construction drawings but they have better gesture. The idea of gesture drawings is that you are supposed to disregard proportion and structure to focus on movement, weight etc. so that you can then apply your understanding of gesture to your finished figure drawings. Download michael hampton's book "Figure Drawing: Design and Invention" or his video tutorials, he breaks down how you should think about figure drawings in a fairly digestible way

I want to! I realized the problem now that I opened both on my browser instead of Photoshop (which apparently made the referece dull for some fucking reason) so I want to fix that but I don't know how to. Do I play with the hue/saturation? the levels? the curves? vibrance? more than one of these (+the rest)? I never play with these magical sliders, so I don't know how to control it.

Drew this from the OP in the statue thread and I'm about to give up on it. Tried to position/proportion them right using negative space and plumb lines and it sorta worked.

Looking for some advice on the rendering though, it seems blotchy and I think it makes them look like theyre black skinned people rather than white marble statues. Tried to blend with a tortillon but I think it looks not that good

your marks look more confident than in your previous portraits, longer, a little bolder, look a little faster, good job on that, be mindful of your work page, wear latex gloves, try not to smudge too much, use a plastic rest pad, even if you're going to cover it up, your control of soft and hard transitions of shadow on the form are much more three dimensional than in your past portraits also, so keep doing that, collar bone and vein on neck look flat, as does the shadow above the left (my left) eye. your handling of the saturation in the midtones from the lower portion of the neck to the upper is excellent- very pleasing , as well as the softness of the cast shadows on the neck, well done

Dude, they aren't grounded properly, there is so many perspective mistakes that I can't even list them all their faces look like they have been hit with shovels everyday since they were born, her hair looks like someone mowed the grass and glued it to her head as a clump, dudes hair extends so much that he would need an alien head under it, also his other hand just disappears into his chest and acquires no space under the arm, your best values in the pic are the birds.

My advice: Forget colors completely for now, do everything in grey-scale for a while, learn some construction (Michael Hampton, Loomis (Figure drawing), Bridgman) and then learn a bit on perspective if you want to do drawings with extreme foreshortening

you need to put your darkest values where shadows shapes meet with bright shapes, and also don't get close to 100 dark, you neet to play between 10-90%

Big anatomy issues, torsos are too long, legs and arms are too short.
There's no real weight to the clothes, they feel too restricted to their bodies, there's absolutely no flow to the pose or clothes.

hey! that's not too bad! you seem to have general proportions down (i might move the crotch higher on both figures) and the characters have a decent attitude to them. the accessories they've got on them aren't too overstated or distracting, which is always good, and they seem to be practical and fit within the time period (are those both horns along their waist? good research if so).

you seem to have a good idea of what you want to draw, so now it's just a matter of learning to draw them better. like, i am digging the costumes, definitely a decent medieval/15th century kind of vibe, it's just that the cloth itself is drawn fairly naively. you understand that there are tension points by the armpits and that it should be tucking into the belts and gloves, but you don't seem to know how exactly to show it. consider doing some cloth studies to see how different fabrics fold when under tension and how they act when at rest. there's a website called pbase.com that's like a public photo gallery that's open to anyone to browse, so if you look up "renaissance fair" or something similar you can find a bunch of reference of people dressed up in medieval costumes. when studying, just make sure that you're deliberate with the lines you're putting down to draw to cloth! you don't need to draw every single crease, just focus on the salient folds that will help you get your point across the easiest.

here's a redline and some relevant references. the way i work is already fairly stylized and less realistic than what you've got, so i wouldn't try and copy my method, but i hope it helps to show one way of simplifying fabric.

Uhm, alright then. I asked because I thought it was just a female orc or something with rough features. I don't think I've ever seen something like a pec and breast on the same chest. Found it odd. As for opinions, well, it's not a subject matter I'm interested in. And as for a critique, well, I'm pretty terrible at drawing, so take this with several grains of salt but....

The face feels kind of flat and awkwardly affixed. The left cheek where it meets the chin really rather bothers me. The left hand seems a bit small and doesn't feel like it's really curving around the thigh, and the right forearm also seems a bit small and thin.

Varies, but bounce light in the shadows are usualy kept darker to maintain a clear binary divide between the light shapes and the dark shapes. Bounce light would have your lightest value within the darks, but it should still be darker than the darkest light to maintain a good read.

Anons help me, I want to get better and I want to be actually good at this stuff but I can't understand why I am so critically slow. My usual 1 hour to 4 hour practice sessions give me unfinished messes at best, pic related is product of two days which is laughable.

Opacity and brush size.
It looks like you're working up layeras and layers and then carefully rendering with a tiny tiny brush.

You will become faster if you just time yourself and make the effort to, but you're better off using a solid brush and larger brush to block things in quickly. Before you get used to it, everything will look like shit, but you will learn.

Also you still don't actually know what you're trying to draw, when you get better at anatomy you can lay down the sketch for that hand in one go and just put your blocky brush over it rather than ctrl-z-ing for five hours.

Do more painting studies, and use a harder, larger brush. You can't expect yourself to be able to do something without knowing how it's done, so look for some paintings that you want to strive towards and try to figure out their process. Digital art is interesting nowadays, because you can often find actual process videos from professionals to see how they do what they do. They're sped up to an incredible speed, so you won't be able to follow along like you might with Bob Ross, but you can still get a general idea of their workflow.

Though they condense the 17 hour process into just under 6 minutes, you can still see that, after thumbnailing, they do an extremely tight sketch which they used to paint flat colours underneath. After that they focus on the key, reflected, and ambient light before getting into the fine details of rendering.

Do a bit of research to find a workflow that works for you. Speed will come with time as you become more comfortable with the medium.

Man, I've seen videos and pics of guys WIP's with blocking and all that, it's crazy. I tried blocking for the base but then eventually it boiled down to 70 layers of tiny brush shit because I started messing up with larger brush.

You've disregarded everything me and other people told you last time and are repeating the same thing over again.Start reading books.You won't get good in a day or a week or a month. You need at least a couple of years until your work will start to look descent. Don't put the carriage infront of the horse. Don't try to render complex lighting like that when you can't even draw a proper figure. Start with Hampton's notes, then proceed to Vilppu. Once you're good enough to confidently be able to draw figures ,then you can start painting basic 1 light scenarios.

Do yourself a favor and don't bother going to a figure drawing class if you're not going to draw from observation. If you're going to make stylized illustrations, use a photograph as a reference, since there's less information in a photograph and you're not going to be using most of it for what you're doing.

i haven't really "done it".I'm yet to be employed in the industry and I'm light years away from getting anywhere near the level I set out to be. I started to seriously study art 2012.Yet I'm only mediocre level at best.Study material is standard. Started with Vilppu dvd then from there I just spread out and now I've probably red just about any book /ic/ can recommend you.As far as styles, I don't really have preference. If something is painted well, chances are I'll like it.
