If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm looking at a T420 for $110 from a craigslist seller. Looked at the guides for local buying and this seems like a good deal. I plan to use this thing for notetaking, browsing, and toting around for errands. My media/gaming needs are taken care of by my desktop. The configuration for the T420 is in the picture.

Any advice you guys can give from experience? Anything the guides left out?
>>
>>55546823
definitely a good deal. i paid 120 for a t420 with only 4gb ram and no fingerprint reader, so your find is definitely better (although i believe both are better deals than average)
screen is trash, but supposedly upgrading to 1600x900 isn't too bad
i use mine for similar stuff, and imo it's perfect once you install linux

It's time to move on from my machines
T61p 1920x1200 panel
X220 with IPS
X220 tablet
T420s with Alienware panel and eGPU rig

Recently came into a solid job and I'm long overdue for an upgrade.
Looking into the Dell XPS 15. Shit key travel and no more track point but ive been starting to enjoy my T420s track pad anyways (sticker off)

My aunt gave me two of her old Thinkpad T20s, how do I manage to install Linux Mint on them? I've found a way to boot from the USB, but the machine hangs forever and it doesn't end up working. Also Windows 98 is installed on it and I can't access the internet.
>>
>>55547125

The only logical jump from ThinkPads with Dell is the Latitude or Precision line. XPS is consumer shit, seriously, no matter how they package it.

Get a Latitude or step up to a Precision if you must, but avoid the XPS like the fucking plague, seriously.
>>
>>55547239

You can't use typical Linux distros because they require CPU features those old Pentium III machines didn't have. There's also the problem with memory support as well and they'll be USB 1.1 machines (which will work fine with a USB 2.0 stick just realize things will take 8x longer or more to transfer and that means the installation itself will take over an hour if even that fast).

You have to find some Linux distro that still offers some PAE support (or the other way around, I honestly can't remember at this moment) but modern distros within the past 4 years or so simply aren't going to work - it's not just a 32 bit vs 64 bit thing (obviously that P3 is a 32 bit processor), it's more than that.

Go grab an old Ubuntu 12.04 LTS ISO or something of that time period, maybe even 10.10 if necessary, those will work just fine.

So I just got my T420 today, and the mic light doesn't turn on when I press that, should I be concerned that it's broken? IT's not a huge concern, I could just get the guy to refund some of the money.

Also, what is that thinkvantage button? I press it and nothing happens, so now I'm worried that it might be that area that might be broken.
>>
>>55547702
Can't mute the mic if it isn't on
The ThinkVantage button is to enter the bios
>>

Is there a Lenovo partition on your hard drive? Sweet machine otherwise, well worth the higher cost of admission over the T420. This screen is gorgeous, the specs are awesome, and it feels much higher quality overall. If you're looking into getting a T420, definitely consider saving up a little more money for a T520 or W520.

Hey /tpg/ I'm looking for a laptop ideal for University, where I'm going to study anthropology.
Review sites are unhelpful, recommending things like the Dell XPS 13 and everything from Lenovo to Mac laptops.

Been sitting on the buyersguide for a while now and it looks like the T440 will be good. What do you think /tpg/?
Should I go for the T430, T530 or the X240 instead?

In case you have alternate suggestions I require >Minimum< / 1600x900 native resolution / ~150GB SSD / 8GB RAM / ~3GHz / 8 hour battery with heavy use. / thick laptops are better than thin.
Additionally, no Wseries, no taplets, no touch-screens, graphics aren't hugely important.

When the battery is plugged in, however, the computer still reports accurate information about the battery, and also reports that the battery is being charged, even though the charge % stays the same and the charge light on the laptop isn't lit up.

What might be the problem here (namely, is the battery fucked, or the mainboard), and are there any solutions I may perhaps be missing? I've already tried power cycling to no avail.

Trying new battery is a bit cheaper especially if it's chink battery. If it's not that then it's something on the board that's likely fucked then

Recently got an x220. After upping it to 8GB of ram and putting a spare SSD I had, I am loving it. My only issue is the screen. It seems like I got a model with a TN display. I'd like to upgrade to the IPS display.

Has anyone here done that? Where did you get your new screen? It looks like Amazon is hit or miss with actually getting IPS.

1 hour per cell is not unreasonable while fresh. After a while and more demanding use because you like a brightness level usable in a well lit room, it's about 5 hours with the 6 cell

I forget why but I remember the default settings on an alienware M17x used HD graphics for some odd reason, sadly i cant remember what I did.

>>55548039
Meh, the time I had them are long gone, I like the X130e because of its bumper lid, it feels pretty strong despite being made of plastic.
As long as you get an E350 or better CPU it will be decent.
I don't know whats a good price for one, but you can probably get one in mint condition for under $120 thru eBay
If its for parts, walk away, they are too much of a bother to justify fixing up when you consider other better options.

screen isn't the best (probably one of the worst I've came across in a thinkpad), but the keyboard is kinda odd to type on as it is pushed a bit closer to you.

>>55549180
I thought the max a T440p can support is FHD.
>>
>>55555888
>Should be magnets in the display bezel. Though afaik the sensor for open/close should rely on the hinge
It's a reed switch in the bezel, to the right of the webcam, with the magnet located in the body. I know that the switch works, as if I place a small magnet near there the appropriate suspend functionality gets triggered.

Just don't want to waste my time replacing the wrong component

Is there an actual issue with buying replacement batteries for thinkpads? I bought a T520 that works perfectly well, but the battery is shit and can only charge to 56% capacity. I was looking on amazon at replacement batteries and people kept saying that their thinkpads didn't recognize it as a "genuine battery" and that they could not charge it .
Here it is https://www.amazon.com/compatible-Extended-Capacity-Replacement-Battery/dp/B00GDPOZWA

Happy user of the X300 and Pixel
X1C3 was dissapointing... Felt too flimsy for me, bottom of lid kinda bowed which was weird. 4K IPS was too much and it kinda wasn't all all that, though I kinda miss it sometimes.
T430s IPS FHD now, dailying a Pixel again.

However X1C4 is a different story, it's subtle design changes may make it better machine, ive yet to try one.

Replacements should work on the T520 unless there was a bios update I haven't heard of. On Ivy Bridge systems (T430, T530, W530, X230) and later, Lenovo added a chip to recognize nonOEM batteries and they will not work.

I had one for a long time for work and once it was retired I used it as a small server. Great little machine and the 1680x1050 screen was one of the best TNs I've ever seen. You should be able to watch 720p media on it. That's where it's gone to [eventually] die - it's my father-in-law's media machine for shit I bring to him.

Still runs decent with Linux (maxes out at 2GB RAM) and it's of the era where it can be undervolted with PHC (or RMClock for Windows - I had no problem running Win7 on it either).

Don't expect miracles though, it's 11 years old.
>>
>>55555967
Depends on how heavy your use is. i5, 9/15 brightness and shitposting on /g/ with a 4 year old battery nets me 4-4.5 hours with 85% of original capacity (calibrated a year ago now, so probably less)

Could check how much of the original capacity you have. I'd say once you knock under 70%, it's probably worth getting a new one and keeping the old one just in case

The chinese chargers work, but they run hot and sometimes die unexpectedly. I can't recall any stories here of chinese chargers frying a motherboard, but it's advisable to use genuine chargers. You can run the one you've got for a while without a lot of worry until you can find a genuine one.

Is the machine too old to even do that with? If it's not, what's a good, non-taxing Linux Distro to use? Also, how am I supposed to install the distro itself? I can't use USB to boot from, and as my Thinkpad can't read DVDs, I'm kind of limited to how big the ISO of the distro can be when burning.

What kind of gaymes do you play on your ThinkPad?
Now after replacing the old wifi card with Intel 7260 ac one I can stream all my shit directly from desktop PC to my laptop (at 60FPS of course). This means I've already moved by desktop to the basement and I stream gaymes through wifi (occasionally via ethernet when the laptop is docked, mostly to play cs:go with low pings). This also means I can live with only 120GB SSD in my x220 because all gaymes are stored on a desktop PC and rest of my stuff is securely held by my home server.

Steam streaming with non-library gaymes is literally the best thing I've discovered this year.

I have an old x220 that seems to work. I dumped it for another laptop thinking that it was broken, but I booted it up the other day and it seemed to be fine. I'd like a dedicated guhnoo+linux, but I've already repaired this thing countless times and repaired almost everything in it that I wonder if it isn't worth getting a different laptop out of spite and frustration. At a minimum, I'd need
>A new set of internal and external screws, and that's IF they'll screw in and the holes aren't fucked,
>Possibly a new fan, this one clicks and sputters, even with a liberal dose of WD-40,
>A new keyboard frame, and,
>A new palmrest.
I might need a new underside panel -- I don't know if the palmrest not latching is the bottom panel, the palmrest, the (lack of) screws, or some combination of all three -- and while the battery health is fine, I think I have a 4-cell. Idealistically, I'd like to be able to squeeze more than four hours of battery out of it, but I don't know if that'll happen even with a larger cell battery.

I can do that, or get a new Thinkpad instead. I almost have half a mind to get an x200 and libreboot it, but I'd need a SBC for that, which I don't own. I could borrow a Raspberry Pi from someone I know, or buy an Arduino clone and use that, but both of those solutions are hacky and unofficial. I guess an x60 would work too, I think those can be flashed with software only, although it'd be less powerful.

tl;dr version:
>Fix up x220 from hell and hope it works
>Get an x200 and libreboot it
>Get an x60 and libreboot it
>Something else

You'll find Wh scales well, but Ah is less because of higher voltage draw

Is this true? Can you get so much out of t460 or x260?
>>

These stats are with an extended battery and a slice battery

Which you probably won't want to carry around everywhere

Another explanation is their Powerbridge technology, there's a small internal battery that will power the device while you swap external batteries
>>
>>55562931
Oh, what are the real Times with 6 vell or 9cell?
>>
>>55562931
I don't think they've had slice batteries for years, those stats are just with their 9 cell batteries
>>
so when I first "ordered" eligible battery(-ies) they sent them next day and send mail with tracking, but now it's been almost a week with no response
do you think they are on to me?
I just wanted to rip my old battery for free 18500 cells but I'm not going without battery in my laptop

Yeah, older screens kept their game, pretty lame since we 'progressed' in technology.

>>55560102
Yeah.
I swapped the trackpoint buttons from a X230 onto a T520, felt good.

RAM is an issue as well, these computers are pretty old, they don't run well. Like Pentium III's aren't really well suited, I don't think I had any that worked 'right' when I installed an OS.
I just stick with windows sadly, I don't take them online at all for risk of viruses, I can barely go online with a Pentium IV.

>>55561761
I think that is fair for Eurokeks
>>
how long should a T420 CMOS battery last? Where is it located? my dankpad is almost 6 years old, assuming it's probably due
>>
Hi, I've built a thinkpad w/ t61 internals and t60 body - not that the body has anything to do with it, but w/e.
>>
>>55564503
oh yeah, I meant to add the second part - is it possible to insert an 850 EVO/PRO flash drive and use it to full capability? I believe this has something to do with SATA3 compatibility or something yes?
>>
I just got a T400

What can I do with it?
>>
>>55564487
You can swap just the buttons? How do you do that? Aren't they part of the keyboard?

Yeah they just fit for the most part, they need a little spacer as the buttons are slightly thinner so they wont click right, but once you put like paper or something, they click like they used to, but don't have that kinda ugly curve.

I lost the photos of it when I did the job, but here's what it looked like when it was done + some ricing as well.

I don't think ive ever noticed it...
Maybe they replaced it from another one that had more use?

>>55564593
It should run W10...
Install gentoo?

>>55564525
You're thinking of the middleton bios; you will be able to get true SATA II speeds, it is limited to that.

yea it's normal, probably has something to do with different manufacturing as they want a transparent piece on the key for the light or something. Normally not that visible though - most people wouldn't see that it's a different colour unless you get right up close

Maybe it's just wasted / too much exposure to sunlight and made it more noticable
