If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Sent this in other thread but I'll move it here.

I heard the T460s doesn't have great battery life and you can get both with pretty much the same features.
>>
I'm in the market for a new laptop and Thinkpads have come to my attention, specifically the T420.

How are the heat and noise production on a T420, assuming I'll have Windows 7 running with about 10-15 tabs open in my browser, watch some YouTube videos, write documents in Word and occasionally watch some chink cartoons?

Also, what kind of battery life can I expect if I replace the battery with a completely new original 70++ 9-cell battery?
>>
>>55524336
Why would I suggest it if it wasn't possible?
>>
>>55524382
I just wasn't aware that was a thing. Not possible on any other laptop I know of, at least.

>>
>>55524378
>heat
I use mine at a desk, but I've never noticed it getting hot, even after hours of use. On the other hand, I never have more than 3-5 tabs open, and I almost never watch videos.
>noise
I can't hear it unless there is no ambient noise (A/C, heat, etc.).
>battery life
I have extended battery and it has always lasted at least 8 hours of use, even if spread out across a few days. I also once used it intermittently for an entire month without charging it.

It isn't my chinese cartoons/shitpotsing device, but it should do everything you need.

6 cell: 3 hours unless you severely dim the screen
9 cell: 5ish hours max

Mine is quad core though, probably slightly better on a dual core i5
>>
>>55524378
Heat/noise: very little unless you're playing 4k video or gaming, then it sounds like a jet engine. Usually runs quietly otherwise.

Battery life: I've never pulled over 6 hours out of my 9 cell.

I assume at least a decent percentage of you go to or have gone to school, run gnu/linux, and own a thinkpad. I intend to purchase one for when school starts in august. I'm 23 so I might as well stand out even more from the 17 year olds with MacBook Tinys(tm). So I ask you /tpg/;
1. What software do you use aside from your favorite editor to take and manage notes? Do you feel that you internalize handwritten information more than typed?

2. I want a device with at least a FHD screen. I'm comfortable doing a screen repair but don't want to have to solder or anything else crazy. It seems that my best option would be a t520 or t530, but I'm afraid they'll be too big. I am open to other business laptops as well. Any suggestions?
I'll need acceptable battery life as I'll be using it for ~7 hours straight sometimes and may not always have access to an outlet. I'd also like to avoid carrying my charger if it's not necessary. I can afford a new t series from lenovo but don't want to waste the money if I don't have to. The most intensive thing I'll be doing is light virtualization, compiling, normal desktop workflow(shit posting). I'm also considering an i3/quad core celery if I can't find a thinkpad that fits the bill.
>>

Internally, the T420 gets pretty toasty under load, with temps in the 80C range. Doesn't usually reach the exterior though. The hottest part on mine is almost always the area around the SATA bay due to the 7200rpm HDD in there. That'd be solved by an SSD, but the T420 is my least favorite Thinkpad, so I don't care enough to buy one for it.

A couple of questions for you guys

For years, I have been looking for a laptop that is both as modular as a desktop, and able to take a beating.
I think I've finally found that in the Thinkpad, as I've just bought my first one (t430). However, prior to purchasing this, I was looking at new ones on lenovo's website, and they seem so much thinner and lighter.

Have they compromised quality & durability for the sake of following the thin/aesthetic meme that everyone is following?

Secondly, I just ordered a second one because why the fuck not. Like the one I have with me right now, it comes with W7 pro, but I have been delaying the switch to linux for some time.
Last time I used linux (2012) I had an issue where in every distro I installed, the laptop would not go into sleep/hibernate upon closing the display lid. The battery life also suffered under Linux in comparison to when I was on wangblows.

Have things changed since then?
Do thinkpads take Linux better than shit-tier consumer laptops?
>>
So I have an opportunity to get an x230 for probably pretty cheap. Mainly because it has some problems.

The main problem is that it doesn't seem to power on. It's missing the power button, but you can still press the metal button on the board underneath. A couple months ago I tried an x220 keyboard, and it didn't power on then either.

Could this be an easy fix? Or is it really dead?
>>
>>55528740
The power button is just part of the keyboard, if the bare metal button works then it should on a functioning keyboard too
>>
>>55528740
>easy fix

Yes
>>
What's the deal with the X62?

How do you make your Thinkpad battery last longer? Do you keep it charged most of the the time? Do you take the battery out while it's using AC power? Do you run the battery all the way to 0% before recharge?
>>
Got a T460 for about 2 weeks.

When I received it I was impressed that the IPS has no backlight bleeding, today when looking at an image with black background I've started noticing some slight bleeding coming from the bottom left corner.

Is there something that could've caused the backlight bleed to develop or was I just blind the first time?
>>
>>55528740
>>55528747
>>55528766
Sorry, I don't think I was clear. The x230 does not power on at all with either the original keyboard or an x220 keyboard.

Plug it in to power, push the power button, nothing happens.
>>
T420 keyboard flex question:

There's quite a bit of flex in the left edge of my keyboard. The escape and Fn keys are okay, but the tab key, for example, flexes quite a bit.

Did I miss a tab the last time I reassembled my T420, or has this flex always been there and I just didn't notice?

(I already have a bit of folded cardboard under, I think, the right end of the keyboard, which solved the flex I had there)

I want to get a T450s for college, looking for good battery and portability for college. Going to be using it for programming and stuff. Am I going to get cucked by the 15W CPU?
>>
Hey /tpg/, got a question for you.

I recently bought an x220 and I'd like to get Xubuntu on it, but it won't boot from any of the USB drives that I've got. It straight up won't recognize 3 of them as an option in the boot menu, and 1 of them shows up but it doesn't work. When I choose the one that does show up, it looks like it attempts to boot from it and then goes straight back to the select device menu. I've tried both FAT32 and NTFS on all of them. I'm using RUFUS to make the bootable disk.

Any thoughts? What works for your x220?
>>
>>55531231
For just programming? No. Programming that you do for school won't be extremely resource intensive. You could get by with a lesser machine if you wanted to.

For other stuff, it depends on the stuff.

just got pic related a few days ago and am loving it. what kind of upgrades can I do?? i mean i really want to max it out as much as possible spec wise. RAM is already upgraded to 8GB but I'd love to max it out, depending on what that is. it's 1600x900 but idk what kind of display it has. very curious about the details (TN, IPS, etc) so if anyone knows, i'd appreciate it. is there a way to get replacement keys for the dock? also have a T400 with a missing HDD cover and a missing thinkpad sticker internally, do you guys know a certain place i could order those from? thanks /tpg/

So, I've been looking up on various panels to replace the Shit T420 one

The obvious choice is the LP140WD2-TLE2, which is the X1 Carbon screen boasting 70/70/60/60 viewing angles, though it's $100 and the connector is on the wrong side

But; I'm seeing there is a panel called LP140WD2-TLHA that is not listed on panelook.com, yet is around $50 on most sites, has the connector on the correct side, and according to one aliexpress seller has 85/85/85/85 viewing angle

Can't find a datasheet on this one or even what laptops use it. If it's true, it would be the best viewing angles for TN, both better and cheaper than the X1 Carbon panel. Too good to be true?

But, I have a lot of extra money so I think I'll take one for the team and buy it and see if it's the real deal.

If so, it might become the best candidate for LVDS/TN screen upgrades for T420/T430

Wish me luck senpai. Will post within the next week or so how it is.

Order a new keyboard via ebay, it should run you at most $15-$30

I'm getting this weird problem with my X220. Sometimes if I hit the middle button it takes me back to a previous page or if I hit it while I'm typing something then it pastes some random text. The text is always from a page I've recently seen but I never copy anything so I'm not sure why it chooses that particular text. Like this, here's what it's copied now:
>Persian/Iranian Traditional. Found via a blog; shit bitrate but considering the music sounds so ancient, it doesn't matters so much.
>"The qanun/kanoon is a descendant of the old Egyptian harp, and it's played since the 10th century in the Arabic world."

>What are some good li-ion cells to rebuild the battery? I have "rebuilt" it with some LG cells from an old Toshiba battery and they seem to be holding a charge, so it looks like the battery can be rebuilt with new cells no problem.

So, I basically removed the old Intel 6205 WiFi card and replaced it with 7260ac one. I got rid of the power hungry bluetooth 3.0 module and I'm using the BT 4.0 integrated into the wifi card.
I moved mSATA drive to the main SATA bay (via SATA>mSATA converter) and I installed WWAN card.

wifi and msata drives are extremely low powered, so I get around 13 hours of actual power life with standard non-IPS screen. RAM was also replaced with low-power DDR3L sticks.

The laptop is x220. Now I can move my desktop pc to the basement and use the wifi to stream gaymes directly into my laptop.
