If you don't go DDR4, you'll just regret it afterward. Eventually DDR3 prices will go up so if you want to upgrade in the future, you'll be stuck getting gouged.

There's a broken HP all in one at my place (similar to pic related). It suddenly stopped working, it just shut down and wouldn't turn on again. Mom and dad claim that it's the result of their prayers to god because my brother was getting addicted to it (for using it 6 hours a day), and say it can't be fixed because it's a miracle of the lord.

My brother talked to a couple of smart jackasses who fix computers on their free time, but they said they can't do it because they just do normal computers, not all-in-ones. Even the people at some small HP support center said they couldn't find anything wrong with it (however they're not the actual HP support center, they're just licensed to represent them in this town or something) How easy are these to fix? Is there a place where I can learn a lot about these so I try to fix it myself?

That is a BTX form factor board.

This was just something Gateway, Dell, and MPC (now bankrupt) tried to whip up to compete against the ATX standard.

The placement of everything had something to do with thermal issues of the then-current Pentium 4, but then Intel wanted to focus on lower power alternatives (Core), and then BTX was rendered unnecessary.
>>
>>54984240
Unless it's >10% or so more expensive where you live, go 1151.

>>54984307
Not quite BTX, the board sticks out on the top right corner and the CPU socket is in the wrong place.

I know I should wait until the 1070 comes out so the price drops on the 970, so the reference one is just in there as a placeholder.
I'm thinking of upgrading to 16gb of memory but I'm not sure if that's going to be worth it with the 6400 and 970.

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/DMgLkT
>>
>>54984467
Don't get a 970 now, AMD's RX 480 is coming out in a few weeks and is expected to be faster, a little more efficient, and only $200. Spend the difference on getting an SSD for storing your OS + frequently used programs, gives a nice improvement in "smoothness".
>>
>>54984223

>>54984208

I too believe that there's a vast conspiracy of people my parents paid to pretend it can't be fixed.

>>54984149

>What's not working with it?

Doesn't turn on. Allegedly at the support center they checked every single soldering everywhere and nothing was wrong, but I don't trust them. I'm gonna start from the bottom checking the PSU (if it has anything like that) and the on/off button switch, and then I'll keep looking into more advanced stuff as long as I know what I'm doing. Never really tried to fix an all in one though.

>>54984083

I'm also approaching the magic angle just to be sure, even though I don't even believe in that bullshit. Some softly strange stuff happened around the prayers, and the computer stopped working that same night, so a few people believe that it was actually paranormal. I'm also gonna check with a priest just to have that possibility covered.

I am considering the 480 but in the past I've only had nvidia cards and never had any issue. I can't tell how good amd drivers are because I can't really tell when someone is just memeing or if there are any legitimate problems.

I don't really care that much, I'm just really unsure about amd because of the mixed reviews.
In your experience are amd drivers up to date with nvidia's? I feel like even though the AMD cards are on par with their nvidia counterparts in terms of raw performance nvidia manages to gimp them through gameworks.

>>54984708
In my experience the lol amd has no drivers is 90% meme 10% true, they often take a week or two to get a performance / bugfix patch out for new games that nvidia gets a patch out in a couple of days for. Their "gaming evolved" recording / game setting suggestion software is pretty shit in comparison to geforce experience, but they're both not really necessary. The only area where nvidia's drivers are significantly better IMO is for games that haven't been rewritten for ages, for example flight simulator and it's descendents as well as some other simulator games tend to work quite a bit better on an nvidia card.

Anyone else's chromium started acting funny during the last couple days?

Everything was perfectly fine but for some reason it's completely screwed up now, it *always* freezes up and eats up loads of CPU when i want to watch a video on youtube or load up spotify or something and i can't right-click either when this happens

I already tried updating pepperflash (it was version 20.0 before and now it's the newest one) manually but to no avail

I'd really like to know what caused this though, like why would a perfectly fine browser fuck itself up for no reason

It's such a shame too because up to this point chromium was by far the most reliable and stable browser in my opinion, but not anymore i guess

Hey so, I'm thinking about the possibilities of a home server.

I want a central computer for serving up Plex streams, NAS, handling backups for computers on the network and maybe seeding torrents. I'd also like it to be capable of hosting FTP and game servers, though those aren't things I'm interested in doing in the near future.

The first thing I'm thinking about is which OS to use. I hear FreeNAS and Linux thrown around a lot, but some people also seem to think Windows is adept at server tasks too. I'm completely unfamiliar with the former two, but I'm willing to learn them if they're the better options. Especially Linux, as it's always been a blind spot in my computer knowledge.

But is there no online service that allows his books to be displayed to read, but hard to download? Like soundcloud does, though it was very easy to download music from soundcloud a while ago, even though they had a price tag on.

You can't.
It's the Striesand Effect, you either put your stuff out there and people will find a way, or you don't put it out there at all
>>
>>54986377
Many of those are different paths, and would generally not be on one server,as you want a low latency media server, but at the same time you want memory and disk thrashing programs at the same time, in addition to opening it up to the network, potenially causing the loss of data, if someone were to get in to your ftp and/or firewall

Never opted to use freenas. Everything it requires is very easy to setup, and dosent have a single poinf of failure.

Get a storage medium that will hold the amount of data you want, then throw in a raid card, depending on how many disks you're using create a raid-5 or raid-6 +1 hotspare

Debian would be a good distro to start with.

I guess, I was thinking that too. Guess I have to talk to him about it and see what he thinks.

He told me that people were taking his books and just scanning and distributing it, but then he told me to scan his books together and put it online professionally so people would at least, read it from there. But there's no way to protect them unless you're going to sell your books and use a service like brytewave or a publisher I guess.

The crackling stops if I mute all sounds, or if I play any audio (even if the audio file is complete silence.)

I always setup my systems modular, keep that in mind.
I would put the ftp on a chroot/container thats isolated from the rest of your network and the system its running on. This would be fine with the media server,as you need to move media to the serving folder. Media server will transcode if needed and thats a hit to your cpu

>torrents
Grab a seedbox, that way you just have to import the data to your media server(use ssh/scp/ftp/etc), and your isp wont be on your ass about torrents.Plus you have higher uptime, and you can send it torrents if you arent at home from your phone etc

No.

If you download a Win10 ISO from Microsoft's website, and activate it with AutoKMS, you have a copy that is identical to a "legitimate" one. The only difference is that it will be activated via the KMS service instead of a retail key, which is to say no difference.

For UEFI boot you should have a file on your flash drive EFI/boot/bootx64.efi, is it there? The standard windows 7 iso doesn't have it, so you'll need to find a copy, see this article http://onetransistor.blogspot.co.nz/2014/09/make-bootable-windows-usb-from-ubuntu.html

relevance of RAM speed? I asked this question in a different SQT and would really appreciate input. My current setup is
>i5-4690k
>4x4GB ddr3-1600mhz CL9

I can get either an i7-4790k for $280
Or an i7-6700k for $280 as well.

Now granted getting the 6700k would entail a new motherboard, new ram, so the final cost for the whole new setup would be just shy of $500 for
>6700k
>Gigabyte Z170-XP SLI
>2x8GB ddr4-3200mhz CL15

Money isn't an issue really but would it be placebo to get the Z170 platform as opposed to sticking with Z97? I mean gaming aside, I do a lot of video encoding and the extra threads would help. How relevant is RAM speed in current day applications? Is it even worth going to DDR4? I know Z170 brings more PCIE lanes, proper NVME support, low power consumption etc.

>Please help me /g/. I've been flip flopping back and forth on this for weeks.

cloning has 2 outcomes. Either works flawlessly and everything works out, or fails terribly and you lose everything. I recommend you backup everything important to you, then go for the cloning. If it fails, you have to wipe the drive entirely and begin fresh. That's a whole other process.
>>
>>55004023
You aren't playing vidya games? Why do you need to overclock? Toss the noctua fan, get a locked cpu, get a cheaper motherboard.

It sounds like you're trying to not be judged for playing video games though. If that's the case, just say so. Half of this board is gamers who just happen to hate browsing /v/.

DDR4 isn't really a reason to upgrade, but if you want to upgrade your CPU I wouldn't half-ass it, get the newer platform. If you do a lot of video encoding you can use the old machine as a secondary render box. There is a slight benefit from going from DDR4 2133 to DDR4 2400, but past that not as much.

>You can plug a 20 pin ATX power cable into a motherboard with a 24 pin ATX connector. The image above shows the 20 pin power cable plugged into a 24 pin motherboard. A 20 pin power cable only fits into one end of a 24 pin motherboard connector so you can't insert it incorrectly. The 24 pin motherboard connector is actually just the 20 pin connector with 4 extra pins added on the end. The original 20 pins were unchanged. The extra 4 pins are not separate rails. They're just extra lines to provide more current to the same rails. On every 24 pin motherboard I've seen, the extra lines for ground, 3.3, 5, and 12 are just connected to the other lines on the same rail from the 20 pin connector. I've never heard of exceptions and it doesn't make sense for motherboard makers to create any. As a result, you can plug a 20 pin cable into a 24 pin motherboard and it will work just fine. At least, it will for a while. They added those extra 4 pins for a reason. When you plug a 20 pin cable into a 24 pin connector you're not providing the extra current carrying capacity which may be needed by the motherboard. If your motherboard's current requirements are low enough then it will work properly with only a 20 pin power cabled plugged in. But if the motherboard draws enough current, then you can overheat the 20 pins you're using on the 24 pin connector.

TL;DR: You can but it isn't a great idea.
