FTFY. Also, given that (very large!) volume of data, what you are already doing is probably the best way. You might separate the folder into different parts, and only update what is necessary against the previous backup to save some time, but other than that just be careful not to drop the drive lol.

Need some help recovering some of my lost files.

My laptop shut itself down couple days ago (which is fairly normal for me since it's pretty old) and i rebooted like i always do. However, the start up process took almost damn near 20 minutes and all the files in my desktop disappeared by the time it finished loading and my desktop wallpaper was a default windows one.
I navigated through my computer and found all the previous desktop files, which i promptly moved to my new one. After that my computer shut itself off again with another 20 minutes booting sequence.
This time my wallpaper was reverted to my usual one but all my files disappeared. I cant seem to find it and i tried searching as well. I also tried to open one of the folders from my frequent list but it says the shortcut has been changed or moved.
Are my files gone forever? currently running windows 8 atm.

Im doing a homework where I need to look for software solutions and I really need help with it.
My last work was on a clinic that needed a software to make the schedules of the appointments, so it was easy to find many options to buy/rent a software that do that.
But now my project is about an app for my college that allow you to check your schedule and receive notifications from teachers in case a class is canceled or the teacher is coming late, and I really dont know how to start looking for somebody who sells an app that do at least part of that. I know the best option is to create the app from zero, but I still need to look for buy/rent solutions

Is there a good way to get an oversized desktop on Windows 7?

(not downsampling)
>>
>>54988098
I don't really know anything about what you are compressing (and it would be hard to reconnoiter such a large collection) but unless you are hurting for file size/memory usage in making the final archive, I wouldn't worry about changing the settings. It might be worth noting that 7z archives do not preserve (NTFS) file permissions (*.rar archives do though) but I don't know if that matters to you.
A lot of the settings there get into some fairly complicated technical details on compression, but just as an example of what you could change, you might try increasing the word size if you have a lot of fairly similar files.
Maybe play around with some of these options against a smaller sampling of the sorts of files you will be compressing, and try to find the best balance between speed and resultant size.
Keep in mind that you are likely looking at diminishing returns for very large values against e.g. dictionary or word size. Making these larger generally will always increase the time it takes to compress your files, without necessarily yielding proportional (or even noticeable) gains against the size of the archive.

The files range from pictures to videos to webm's to html files. I just want the files to be backed up. I remember when I dragged and dropped the folder long ago into an external HD, files were missing. It's not the size that worries me, its having them all go onto the HD, every single one of them and not become corrupted or unplayable or unviewable.

I like to listen to music and play games at the same time so I got a splitter and a volume controller so I can have audio coming from my pc and consoles sent to one pair of headphones, the issue I'm having is when I turn the volume down from the volume controller connected to my consoles I start to hear a buzzing sound the lower the volume the louder the buzz, I tested a bunch of things and it only happens with the splitter plugged in. so my question is would replacing the splitter get rid of the buzzing noise? if not is there any other solutions to have audio playing from two sources with volume control independent from one another? the splitter is 2 male one female if that helps

You could just use SPDIF or something to output the audio to your PC (I got a $20 USB adapter that does SPDIF in if your sound card doesn't have the functionality built in) this would kind of sort of allow independent adjustment (though it'd be fiddly and have to be done through your software volume controls)

Swap the CPUs over, use the E8400 in the DDR3 motherboard.

>>54988879
Assuming that's a R9 280X ãnd no significant overclocking you'll take a maximum of ~250W for the GPU + ~100W for the CPU + ~50W for the rest of the system = 400W total.

You can't really use the same PSU for two systems, the motherboard expects to be able to switch on/off the PSU, and will behave weirdly if it doesn't switch on/off when it's expected to.

suffix, if present, is one of f, F, l, or L. The suffix determines the type of the floating-point literal:

(no suffix) defines double
f F defines float
l L defines long double
>>
>>54990825
But isn't the type defined during the creation of the variable?
If i write
float x=1.01

I'd expect x to be a float, not a double

C and C++ designed in a way that imply that programmer knows what he is doing and what kind of a constat he needs.

If i say that the variable is a float i think i have a pretty good idea of what kind of constant i want, if i know what kind of constant i want why should i have to say it twice in order for the processor/compiler/whatever to understand?

You see, I'm asking this because my computer is 10 feet away from my PC and the DisplayPort 10 feet cables have shit reviews compared to the HDMI ones. I'd rather just continue to use my two 10 feet HDMI cables.

A 60 Hz monitor playing on a 20 tick server (staying with zeroes just to make the question simpler to answer) will have to use interpolation, because the server doesn't update fast enough for the monitor's actual refresh rate.

How does a 60Hz monitor interpolate on a 120 tick server? Does it take every other tick? I understand that the server side game updates the same regardless, but what does it look like on a monitor that doesn't refresh fast enough? Even if there is minuscule lag, does it exist?

And finally, will a higher Hz monitor reduce that lag because it refreshes fast enough for the server's tick rate?

I have 1600x900 and 1680x1050 monitors right now and I really need some upgrades. I want a 4k monitor and 2 other monitors eventually but 4k monitors aren't exactly usable yet I hear. If I'm wrong let me know.

For the time being - what's the next standardised resolution step down from 4k? Any monitor advice is appreciated, I like the idea of having a vertical monitor.
>>
>>54995113
4k is perfectly usable with large enough screen or using an OS/programs that do proper scaling

Next step down is 1440p
>>
>>54995113
what do you want to use your monitor for? graphic design? video games? facebook and youtube?
>>
>>54994580
What do you want to do?

Do you want more colors and viewing angle or higher response speed, because screens tend to lean to one or the other depending on the tech, which translates into cost. If you pay enough you can get both, sort of.

Here is some general break down

TN = +lower cost, +higher speed, -lower colors, -lower viewing angle
IPS = +best color, +improved viewing angle, -more expensive, -lower speed

60Hz = +standard supported in most cases
144Hz = +future standard everyone is talking about, -too real for some old-school movie views (see the Hobbit reviews)

16x9 = +standard
ultra-wide = +more office productivity? (I question the claims)

adaptive sync = +prevents tearing and other frame errors
not adaptive sync = -no dynamic error protection, this can be very small or very big issue depending on image sourcing

Matt = +lower glare rate (preferred by some for outdoor use where lighting changes)
Glossy = +clear picture, -glare, -finger print magnet

-----

Personally I say just get a nice cheap monitor and move on, as most people can only see the difference in side by side comparisons. If I had a practical budget I would look for these features in this order

adaptive sync (everything should have this by now)

16x9 (standards are made for a reason)

Glossy (I setup my room to not have glare and don't touch it)

ISP (viewing angle and color matters to me, if I got the money)

60Hz (can't see the higher frame rate mattering much, many systems artificially limit to 60Hz as it stands today, but if I had the money may as well just get the 144Hz for when things start widely using it in the future, but by then costs could have come down a lot)

>>
>>54995297
>I'll be using mostly for video games and I like watching high resolution videos on my desktop. I like browsing Facebook and Youtube too.
in that case you would be better off getting 1440p@144hz. tn if your main concern is video games, ips if you want better colors and viewing angles for videos.

the 970 is not powerful enough for 4k, but you should get more than 60 fps in most games when you turn down the settings a bit, making the 144hz worth the investment.

in addition to that there's barely any 4k content yet, 1080p is still the standard.

i'm using a 27 inch 1440p 144hz monitor right now and i'll never go back to 60hz.

I have been thinking of getting another to put in SLI. How would this suffice? My end goal really is to have one 4k monitor and two 1440p monitors. How close could I get to this?

I would just be getting two 1440p monitors for the time being, assuming that most games are ready for that resolution right now. What have you noticed in difference from 60hz to 144hz?

I do prefer max settings, might have to do some build tweaking, but not sure how much further to go. That will probably be something I will look in to later, but at this point I guess I just want to know how it will perform on my current build.

I'll be saving any advice I get here to reference later, I'll take note of that comment as well.
>>
>>54995449
970 SLI is about the worst thing you could do
If you want to run 4k sell the 970 and buy a 1080
>>
>>54995467
Thanks for the heads up. Once I switch to 4k I will upgrade my video card, but for now I will be switching to two 1440p 144hz monitors and possibly one of my old moniors, assuming my built can take it well. I will then upgrade my computer to switch the old monitor, or add a third monitor that is 4k.
>>
>>54995449
>How close could I get to this?
with two 970's? not very close, for video games that is. the 970 is held back by the low amount of vram, sli won't solve this issue. you'd be better off investing in a 1080 or a 980ti rather than two 970 in sli, but you still won't be able to play anything but source games (cs:go, tf2, dota) at 1440p+4k+1440p resolutions. the tech simply isn't there yet, sorry.

i use a 980ti with my single 1440p 144hz screen and i can barely get 110 fps in most games on the highest settings. i usually turn down the settings a bit so i can get the full benefit of the 144hz. but anything above 100 fps should be fine for someone coming from 60hz.

>What have you noticed in difference from 60hz to 144hz?
it just makes everything super smooth. bonus points for gsync/freesync, which prevents screen tearing.
trust me, once you've seen it irl, 60fps will look like 30fps does to you right now.
and 30fps will be absolutely unplayable.

Hey can anyone help me?

I have manjaro downloaded, a disk on key, and rufus.
I want to make my usb bootable with manjaro, which rufus settings should I use?
I also want to dual boot just in case

Yep, even after turning off automatic updates and automatic driver updates I still got them. There's nothing wrong with my hardware at all, in Debian my PC is rock solid stable, memtest shows nothing wrong, and my temps are perfect. I also went through a few fresh reinstalls, and with most of them my only third party programs were Firefox and Steam. I still got the random reboots.

I decided that Win10 is just a piece of shit and I went back to Win7.

should it take forever to 'check for updates' on windows 7?
I reinstalled, and i'm kinda regretting it already

How do I switch off my phones voice connection but still keep data on? So it would appear off to anyone who tries to call but I could still use internet?
It should be possible. I had 3g dongle long ago and it could send and receive sms at the same time being online but if I tried calling the dongles number it would say phone is off.

Pic unrelated

Yes, it takes several minutes. If you do a fresh install of Windows 7 you absolutely have to use WSUS Offline Update. It downloads every update for you then you tell it to execute a script which applies every patch in sequential order.

>Do fresh Win7 install
>Run WSUS
>Make sure it starts properly
>Let it go overnight
>Wake up to an up to date Windows 7

I want to buy a big hard drive with 6 TB of storage so I can store lots of stuff.

I don't know too much about hard drive manufacturers, which brand of hard drive is most trustworthy?

Or do I just buy some cheap shit?
