why does everyone hate the matte case on the 090?

i would think it would be better, less of a fingerprint magnet and less prone to show scratches.
>>
>>54902388
You learn to stop putting your fingers all over your watch pretty quick. Regardless of finish, you still don't want crap from your fingers on the crystal or anything.

As far as showing scratches, probably depends on the exact finish and the nature of the scratches.
>>
>>54902420
that can't be the only reason? people were talking about it as if it was finished improperly or in some way defective.

i tried googling about it and couldnt find anything

>>
>>54902388

The finish is very basic and kind of crudely done. I personally feel like the matte nature of the case and shininess of bezel clashes very badly. Yeah it's good at hiding fingerprints and smudges. Scratches will be much worse though because you'll create shiny spots that you can't polish out, you'd have to re-blast it.

This is probably going to be ridiculed but whatever.

A lot of people are attached to the Submariner because they are huge fans of James Bond films and it's probably the quintessential "Bond watch". I grew up watching the Jason Bourne films, and because of that I have a illogical desire for the Bourne watch: Tag Huehue Link chronograph quartz. I was

Unfortunately they "updated" their line years ago and now it's not in the same style. Even if it was I'm unwilling to drop the that amount of money on a quartz from a company as shitty as TAG.

Long shot here but is there a watch that is similar to this one (Overall design, Chrono, Tachymeter inside of the watch, Rotating Bezel on the outside, Date, water resist, quartz [to keep costs on a chrono down] etc)? Trying to keep this somewhat cheap, like under 500$ or so, would be willing to go a bit higher depending on how good/similar the piece is.

Better picture.

Like I said above this is a long standing illogical desire of mine, don't bother suggesting a piece with different styling that suits the same purpose, the whole purpose is to be as close to that one as possible.
>>
>>54903984

Just get the Tag Link from Chrono24. No one in real life will ever tell you how "shitty" your watch is. Its autistic forum talk, people like that dont exist.
>>
>>54904006
I'm unwilling to drop over a grand on a quartz watch at this time.
>>
>>54904229
Not that anon but the problem is the styling.
They exist for under $500 but that 'style' always goes for alot more than the cheaper styles.
Have you tried a reverse image search and seen if anything similar comes up?
Also try crawling on ebay. You may find a second hand one in the old style you like
>>
>>54903984
>>54903993
So wouldn't it be better to avoid this disgusting Tag styling and basically get a Speedy clone?

Do you see the disgusting out of place numerals, which are also terribly cut off?

This is probably about as un-Bond like as it gets. A vintage Sub, an Omega Milsub, a vintage Heuer or a Pulsar red led digital are the only ways to go and not this steaming hunk-o-junk.

What is the best dress/casual watch for around £500? I want to wear it for work with a shirt & tie but also be able to wear it in more casual settings if I want.

I have an SKX to wear with jeans etc so it doesn't have to be as casual as that but also not an actual 'dress watch' per se.

You should be able to get a basic Hamilton Jazzmaster from a grey market dealer for around that price, Christopher Ward C5 Malvern, Seiko SARX027, Orient Star Classic those are just a handful of options. Some of those aren't super dressy but enough so that they'd work with a suit but also not look out of place with a t-shirt.

If you can accomplish that, then congrats. I tried to get my girlfriend interested in watches to no avail. She wears a rose gold Michael Kors and a hideous plastic blue submariner lookalike. It pains me greatly to see both.

Recently I got my hopes up because she asked me to help her find a "white watch", at which point I gleefully opened the Seiko 5 finder and looked for something with a white dial. Little did I know, what she actually meant was a watch with a white case and bracelet, not "silver" like mine. I don't think it is even possible to get a half-decent case material in white.

>Daini 44A King Pimple, with ultra-rare massive hacking lever and the little weight on the hairspring, movement is gold but dial is fucked

You should see one of the regulars on f10. The guy has bout 700~ in his collection, all cleanly displayed on his website and 90% are slav watches and 85%~ of them are dress watches.

Plus the fleamarket find i sold to him for a healthy profit.

Also now that i think about how many Jap watches i've owned and i sold:
>SNZG15 that went to britbong serviceman
>SNK357 to a drunk Irishman
>Rather badly scuffed Type II penismeme with a deep blue dial to another Irishman
>Nicely modded 7002 that required a service to a Swede
>Orient Ray to a very funny Polak.
>Citizen NY0040 with a crooked chapter ring to a Sinagpoorian
>SKX007 to a burgeristani because it was too damn bland.

Now all i got left is a 5206 that needs the day lever or gear changed, a Weekdater and a 2nd gen pre-prospex Seiko Monster. Next up to get would be a couple of 52XX's, one for parts and another one to wear, another very good looking penis meme and in the long run a SARX015 (Till the end of 2016~).

I'd start buying the Penismeme and 52XX's now, but both the draft and moving apartments is a bad time.

So, it's been 21 hours since I dropped my vintage automatic diver from the 70's on the tile floor of my bathroom (3 feet high). It kept running fine.

But even though I hadn't measured accuracy earlier, it's lost -3 seconds during this time (and might go up to -4 by the time it clocks the 24 hours). This is still acceptable by COSC standards, right? But should I be worried? Or is it fine as long as the gap doesn't gradually increase?

I'm tempted to take it to my watchmaker's by Monday but I'm worried (he's kind of rude) he'll just laugh at my face that I'm complaining about -3/-4 seconds/day.
>>
>>54910262
-4 s per day is very good for a mechanical, and certainly very good for one that's forty years old. -4 is indeed within COSC, although COSC would require that accuracy in multiple positions (presumably you've just timed in one position).

Sounds like you dodged a bullet.

I've never seen anyone make those assertions. we just like mechanical, the vast majority of quartz is cheap mass produced and you might as well replace the watch rather than repair it.

you have vintage seiko's and such and some higher end pieces that are made for high accuracy and with quality parts that are worth repairing and maintanance.

but I just like mechanicals. I'm not going to try and push them as the superior technology. they are largely an exercise in futility, but they are interesting enough to keep around.

Do you think there's a reason why Dimitry hasn't restocked them?
I think the green ones have been produced but he's waiting some time until all the other colors get sold, since most people are seeking to buy the green one. This way he can make sure people will buy the other colors since they'll think the green one won't be available again.
I think it's a marketing strategy but maybe I'm dreaming too much...
But I mean, why the hell wouldn't he want to sell the green version if it's the most popular one?

Plausible, because I have no idea. Last time the black and blue sales did linger a while, but perhaps they had more units in stock based on broader market demand.

Someone asked on Facebook about green, I'll see if it gets a reply.

The new caseback depicts a limited edition number out of 900, which seems a lot for a single color, and an odd number across all colors (ex. 225 units per 4 colors, 180 per 5 if green exists).

What I like about Laco is that they're one of the few entry-level brands that actually has its own design niche and doesn't feel like the budget variant of a more famous manufacturer. They have stepped it up when it comes to build quality and finish the last few years too.

Gotta agree, the build quality is excellent. Mine was PVD coated and I didn't get any single scratch after wearing it almost daily for a year, which is crazy. And nowadays all Lacos come with sapphire crystal.

Anyway, after having own one I can say that it's a good brand but you can get better watches from other manufacturers for the money.
But if you are looking for a Flieger, it's a safe bet considering Stowa is a lie of a brand that brags of being fully German being the cases and many components Chinese made. Laco at least doesn't
try to suggests its customers that they use German movements.

It's an unfortunate fact that many people looking for cheap watches, also happen to be looking for large, gaudy watches.

That being said, "stuck with vintage" doesn't sound that bad, considering vintage contains most watches ever made.

For an interesting watch of appropriate size under 500 you could look at various military watches, like the GG-W-113 spec watches. Just make sure you're getting a true period piece, and not a modern Chinese recreation (if you're paying period piece prices, at least.)

I ran into the first site, 17jewels while searching for info on Ebauches Bettlach.

The problem is that the sites contradict each other. 17jewels claim that EB 8021-68 has no shock protection, while according to ranfft it has Kif-Protechoc.

So I was mostly hoping for some third site that could shed some light on the situation.
>>
>>54912754
Interesting.

The image on ranfft's site has shock protections on the balance jewel that looks akin to incabloc, while the version on 17jewels doesn't appear to have it (or some kind of cover on it).

I've seen other EB movements that have incabloc styled shock protection and some that don't so it's not out of question.

Once again I return, this time to tell you guys about my student watch project at school. For those of you who don't know, the project was to recreate the barrel and train bridge of your standard ETA 6497 or 6498. We are given just a square of brass plate and the entire thing has to be done by hand, primarily using a watchmakers lathe. Pic related is your generic 6497, the two bridges in question being the upper right and upper left. Recreating the balance cock was optional, and while I tried to I ended up messing up one of my cuts and basically ruining it.
>>
>>54912979

I'm not a fan of either honestly. I'd rather get a Reverso Duo instead.

Once you do enough lathe work, you start to get something like this. This is the underside of the bridges with those recesses cut to allow room for the wheels and the holes for the jewels.

Unfortunately I don't have any more pictures from when I was cutting out the top of the bridges on my computer, but I might be able to dig some up later. Regardless, once you do cut out all of the recesses and such on the tops of the bridges, you cut the disc in to separate pieces and then file the edges down to whatever shape you want. Then, applying final finishing and you get something like this.

>>54913161
Lining up the centers is done with the lower piece in pic related. Its basically an old 6497 mainplate soldered to a big disc of brass. With that, you screw down the factory bridge, get the jewel centered in the lathe, then take off the factory bridge, put on yours, and drill a hole. Assuming the lathe didn't get misaligned, it should be in exactly the right spot.

Push in all the jewels, assemble the movement, slap it in a cheap Chinese case and there you go, you've got a watch which you can say was partially handmade by you. As of right now I'm the only student who has actually finished their watch (only one other student is past the very beginning stages), and I'm really glad I put in the work to make this. Its definitely not perfect, and there's plenty I would do different if I were to do it again, but I still love the end result.

>>54913245
I like the overall design of the SARB better and the image quality of the SARB is much worse than the one of the SARX on that picture, which makes it look it worse than it really is.

I have a metal band (20mm) that has a polished, duller look to it. I am wondering if you guys can recommend a watch that doesn't have a very shiny casing on it.
>>
>>54913337
Nice. Going to make a dial with a rose engine or something?
>>
>>54913383
I just picked 2 pictures of similar angle etc to throw together. The finishing on the case seems better on all the pics I've seen. Also things like the textured dial & indices look better quality.

Pictures can be deceiving however, which is why I wonder if anyone has owned or at least held both.

I actually did take an engine turning class and create a few discs with some different designs on them. The original plan was to use one as a dial, but then I realized that it wasn't a large enough diameter and I didn't want to go through the effort of making it work. Pic related is the front as it is right now.

Apparently, green dials are available in July. Dmitry said the greens had to be ordered again due to manufacturer making mistake with pantone number they were made dark green near to black, hence the delay.

oh shit ur doing the school watch project too? we're doing the exact same but we're not making the 6497 mainplate. we're doing the train , escape wheel and just modifying the barrel bridge. We'd probably do the entire thing but we're building a clock and doing services all at the same time.
what school do you go to? you in america? Im at LWT.

Holy jumping fuckaroonies, you're alive, man! Was getting worried that we would never see you again.

And this is incredible work, by the way. Any plans to make your own automatic movement, or is that too complicated? Theoretically, could you get a Hi-Beat madenwith this same lathe process, but just using a Seiko 5470 as the base rather than an ETA 6497? Also have you timed it for accuracy?

What other watches have you added to the collection?

Getting spam filtered for some odd reason when trying to post the website, so just google the following phrase and it will pop up.
>mroatman watches of the USSR

Now 700 is a rough estimate by him, not including a few parts movements he has. If i remember correctly he's about 24 or 25 and has a partner/gf/wife. I'll need to dig up the pm from him.

Also pic related is soon to be displayed on his website.
