A quartz crystal regulates the electromagnetic brake on the glide wheel. So it's as accurate as a quartz watch, duh.
>>

>>54881760
There's presumably still the question of which is a more accurate way of transmitting the timekeeping signal from the quartz crystal to the hands of the watch - a stepper motor or a magnetic brake?

Spring drive is as accurate as many sundry quartz watches. But if you're looking at quartz watches of near the same price as spring drive, you can get much more accurate quartz.

Out of curiousity, is that dial a repaint? I find the Chronometre spelling and the huge modern-style SWISS MADE text a little suspicious and the font looks a little strange. Your painted minute markers look pretty sloppy just like mine do, too. There's so many different models with slightly different text that I never know what's original.

At least your watch has a 3 o'clock index, though.

i really like the 656 actually but isn't it only for the 120?

if im going for a 710 won't it be too small? or are only the case sizes different and all amphibia dials the same? if all the dials are the same and only the case sizes are different then i will almost definitely do that.

the thing im afraid of with the regular non-656 deep blue is buying it on ebay or seperately and it getting here and being teal due to an outdated picture.

I want one with a bracelet and I'd like a 6R15 powered one but I don't like the models, except for the SARX027, which doesn't have a bracelet and costs a little bit too much, and the SARB029, which doesn't have a bracelet as well and looks like shit with one.

>>54887910
Piss easy.

Caseback wrench to open and close, tweezers to press on the stem release, remove the stem, reseat movement in the new case (lift it with thicker tweezers), stick in the correct stem and volia. And unless you've given the movement 2 weeks to run don't regulate it yet.

Only one thing to note, i think the 120 case has the longer stem, while the 710case has the shorter stem. If you buy a 710 case with a stem it should be fine.
>>
>>54888018

i'm gonna buy a 710 with a 656 dial on the side, i think you're explaining the steps for buying a 120 and a 710 case on the side.

i got the basic idea of how from here (http://forums.watchuseek.com/f54/anatomy-vostok-68330.html)

from what i can tell i need a watch case holder, case screwback wrench, movement holder, some tweezers and screwdrivers and a watch hand remover.

http://www.amazon.com/Vastar-Adjustable-Opener-Remover-Watchmaker/dp/B01DPEZ5RA, will this case holder also work as a movement holder? they look pretty similiar except a few details, and i'm trying to be as hebrew as possible with this.

Read http://forums.watchuseek.com/f10/request-vostok-modding-tutorial-long-poorly-written-lots-not-so-high-quality-pics-3036938.html instead.

I wouldn't call that an ideal movement holder, but it could work. My movement holder also doubles as such. (It's a shitty cheap one) Important bit is to have a clean as possible room, since my current work room is filled with moving boxes and dust i can't do any mods and or regulation.

>>

How do these kind of people not realise that the look like fuckfaces.
Depends on the movement anon.
If it's complicated than 100povodollars is OK as long as that includes the complete overhaul of the movement.
More expensive watch = more $$$
If it's a cheap manual wind out auto then it should be more like $50 - $100
Most people don't realise that its a 1 to 2 hour job if you take your time and do it properly.
Most car dealers charge $50 per hour for work so watch makers should seem like value by comparison

This is what makes me scared to buy vintage Swiss watches. Compared to Seiko, where you can literally just look your shit up in the catalogue and figure out what's been tampered with, the Swiss scene has so many unknowable redials and frankens that it's scary.

Which are usually easy to spot, frankens on the other hand are a bit less easy since they are surprisingly uncommon.

The issue with the Swiss scene that if you sway away from well known manufacturers, part interchangeability, general information and rarity vastly increases. My Dugena is the only one of it's kinda that i have seen, and i doubt i'd find another one(Swiss ebuche movement though). But for 50$ i ain't complaining.

Also the more i look at it the more am i swayed away from shelling 500$ on a SDGM and getting a SARX instead.

I personally think the SARX is a better value than the SDGM, but fat Torontonian would argue otherwise. The text on the SDGM is far too low-rent for its pricepoint, and the finishing is not appreciably better than the SARX. Which would be more excusable if they had a 28.8k movement in it, but Seiko has to play the Fuji-sama Jew and still give us a 7S26-derived 6R15 instead of a 4S (aka 21st century 52xx) movement. Great dial though.

Speaking of the 52xx and its descendents, I can't wait for my $100 LM Special to arrive. Gonna need to replace that crystal, though.

>>54891381
Thanks. I figured I wouldn't have a lot of competition from you since it has kind of a Vanac look to it (still can't tell if it's a true sunburst, Reed's pictures are outrageously shitty) but as it turns out I didn't really have any competition from anyone. Put in my final bid like 30s before the auction end and nobody attempted to outbid me. It's hilarious how unappreciated these things are, while everyone is crawling over one another to get far inferior 21,600 calibers.

I can't find a replacement faceted crystal, so it looks like I will have to go for domed glass. Which is alright, I like domes as much as the next guy, but faceted crystals are really fucking excellent.

>>54892010
I won't take this seriously, but for the record most quartz movements are total shit and basically unrepairable. Even jeweled quartz movements (which can last upwards of 40 years as mine has) will eventually suffer from some sort of electronic failure, usually a capacitor in the circuitry. Unless you can find a compatible capacitor and are really, really good with soldering, they're toast once the circuitry starts to go.
>>
>>54892373
>Reed's pictures are outrageously shitty
His pictures aren't too bad, he just knows a couple of Jewish photography tricks to hide some obvious faults with his watches.

Waiting till i finish basic training and finishing moving before i test my luck on Y! Japan though. I want to try getting my hands on another couple LM specials or maybe a KS.

And about quartz movements, if the coil is gone it's usually a lost cause.

Where Y! seems to excel is with the rarer stuff. Like the KS Specials, GS chronometers, or even muh 7018. Unfortunately you have to do a lot of swimming befoee finding the gold nuggets at the bottom of the cesspool.

We do not even fully know the real world lifespan of a quality quartz watch because they haven't existed that long. But we do have mechanicals working from much longer than quartz has existed.

But I wouldn't count on budget quartz lasting on the same timescale as mechanicals. But a nice Grand Seiko or something? Could go quite a long time.
>>
>>54892705
>Wouldn't there be a way to make your own
Part of the issue, generally you can't quite make them in a DIY or simillar but manufacturers might be able to.

So, if the coil is gone the coil is gone, and coils are usually rather specific to the model but are somewhat exchangeable between similar models.

Curios, did you see any 7A28 quartz chrono's in there?

You may miss something, but I doubt it. Models with the 52 caliber include the Lord Matic, King Seiko, and... That's it, I think. It was not used in the GS because the 52xx was a Daini movement but the GS was a Suwa product. Whatever Suwa was putting in the GS was probably better anyways, if not for the higher beatrate than for the generally better finishing and accuracy (the 52 caliber is a bit of an industrial movement, it's not really designed to look pretty). Technically the 52xx survives to the present day (or it was resurrected, whichevwr you prefer) and it's used in other high end Seiko products.

The 52xx was probably the best overall automatic movement produced by either Seiko division before the quartz revolution.

Not a chance, buddy.

Is the 52 caliber better than just about every other automatic movement ever made? Yes. Did Daini generally fuck up way less than Suwa? Yes. Were Daini's movements good enough to be used by present-day Seiko, while just about everything ever produced by Suwa has gone extinct? Yes.

But there is just no comparison between the 52 caliber and the 61.

Pretty much any 52xx in regularly serviced condition should run under +-2s/d and would have a good shot of passing COSC certification.

For the time it was made (1971-1975) it was a top of the line volume produced movement directly comparable to an Omega 56x/75x or an ETA 2892-A2.

Wait, are you trying to tell me the 5216 doesn't have instantaneous date change? Where did you hear that?

I was mainly looking for a 5216 because it had the added spring-loaded pawl that eliminated the risk of damaged to the quickset (meaning it can be set any time of day). But dammit, I didn't want to lose muh instantaneous changeover for that.

>>54894082

If it does I'll take your LM, please and thank you. How long until you've worked yourself into a completely inescapable trench? Also post pics of Citizen, I'm wondering if this is a bullet I happened to dodge.

Fair enough, i'll try to get another LM special but with a different looking dial, likely going to get my quite nice Aussie proxy buyer to search for one instead. I'll likely end up paying about the same, since he gladly helps me avoid import taxes.

Which oddly enough were recently changed, so if it's a used watch valued under 300$ i seem to get no taxes at all if they are said to be paid(?) or some bs like that.

>>54894103

>>The 28800 bph 52 caliber is better than the 36000 bph 61GS caliber in general

There are trade-offs on both sides of 28800 vs 36000 and no one has been able to demonstrate conclusively that 36k is inherently more accurate in general, and certainly not that remaining 614x and 618x calibers today have any accuracy advantage over the 52xx.

Remember that factory adjustment is irrelevant at 40 years remove, and what matters much more is movement robustness and inherent accuracy and adjustability.

The 52xx appears generally to be blessed with pretty amazing inherent accuracy, and as I said, most good condition regularly serviced examples can easily be gotten to run under +/- 2s/d.

If you have a specific technical argument as to why the 61GS movements have any clear design, reliability and inherent accuracy advantages over the 52xx, I'd love to hear them.

>>The chronometer 5246 is specifically better than the VFA 618x which caused the legendary Swiss observatory butthurt

Actually, that was the Daini produced manual winding 45xx as in the 45GS that did that, but thanks for playing.

Just got my first Slavshit & hand-wound watch.

Dumb question, but which direction should I wind the crown?

Also is there any way to figure out if the crown has a second stop for changing the date? I want to make sure before I pull it too hard and break it.
>>
>>54895078
>Also is there any way to figure out if the crown has a second stop for changing the date?
Pull it, cycle the hands 24 hours, and see if the date changes.

Also. Clockwise tends to be the winding direction.
>>

>>54895045

The 5216 and 5256 sacrificed the instant changeover for the spring loaded pawl to safeguard against damage from the quick-set being used between 9pm and 3am.

The changeover is still pretty fast on the 521x/525x, but it isn't instant.

Mine starts changing the date&day at 12am and changes fully at 4AM. Then again my day mech is broken, likely a damaged or badly seated part somewhere. (Quickset works)

Though it's a good enough reason to get myself another couple of LM special's, one working and one for parts.

Weekdater is pretty neat though, date switches between 12AM and 12:20 while the day because it's larger finishes at about 12:50AM.

>is that dial a repaint?
No m8. It's the original dial, no retouching. Except the crown -wich was reinstalled by Omega when they have to serviced it, due to the previous owner loosing the original when he hit it off-, it's all in original condition.

>I find the Chronometre spelling and the huge modern-style SWISS MADE text a little suspicious
>There's so many different models with slightly different text that I never know what's original.

The spelling is correct, and the big Swiss Made looks that way because the crystal refraction.

Remeber that, like with almost all vintage productions, watchmakers would ocasinally change some tiny specs of a watch for very different reasons, without updating the reference code. Other times, it was made especially for a particular maket, country or store, so lots of different posibilities right there.

For example, not many people are aware that a fair amount of different Omega references sold in Americas during the seventies and eighties have bracelets Hecho en Mexico -made in Mexico- and that are undoubtly original, since those were made by Holzer y Co. by commission of Omega itself. Even more, Joske's -a Texan AD- managed to get its own particular production of such bracelets, as it did with Rolex as well, and eventually even asked for changes in the design, wich Holzer accepted.

For this reason, to this day there is no complete catalog of all the different variations available of brazelets made for specific models like the Speedmaster Mark IV and Mark IV.5 sold in Americas.

>>54890072
>This is what makes me scared to buy vintage Swiss watches.
A way to avoid this, if you don't have suffice knowledge, is to buy from companies that make their living by spotting any franken, like house auctions. This Pie Pan came thru the same expert that used to curate Bergdorf Goodman collection.

Does the Astron have TiC on the case/bracelet?
Also I'm really not trying to shill but Casio makes better modules.
Astrons will simply not sync while indoors.
Although this is a fairly complicated argument, as I'm sure the astron has things that the oceanus line doesn't
What's your main reason for liking the Astron better?
These kinds of watches aren't discussed here often due to them not being /fa/ enough for the faggots on here.
