Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Good build quality. Light. Lacking physical buttons but at least the touchpad is pretty good.

Screen colors a bit off out of the box, lacking vibrance.
>>
I guess I can ask my question here.

Looking to buy an x220 on eBay. Should I get the 2-in-1 or regular? Is there a difference in build quality?

Touchscreen or no? I want to use it outside so brightness/contrast is important.

And how much should I pay for it, how much is too much?

Thanks.

I don't think it can handle Ubuntu or Debian to be honest.
We're talking 128mb of ram and a 500-700mhz processor.
Ubuntu would take up the entire hard drive.

I'm having trouble with my X220. I'm currently running it with Debian and the wifi drivers are detecting access points around it, however I can't connect to them.

I'm using NM and I get this error when trying to connect to my own network

I had issue like this forever with my older Thinkpads, I ended up removing the wireless card and plugging it back in, and it connected to them just fine again.
No idea why, but it's basically a matter of unplugging it and plugging it back in.

You won't loose any features, I only put a dual boot on my x220 because I sometimes have to use IE for my job and to install a few games I almost never touch.

The performance is about what you might expect out of a ten-year-old 32-bit laptop. They're basically only useful as T601F fodder at this point, and that's why I bought this one. The -p suffix guaranteed me a Flexview screen, and from what the seller told me it had a very high chance of being 1600x1200, so I took the chance and god damn did it pay off. I already had my T601F fully assembled, but the screen was a cheap compatible TN and the frame was beat to hell. Now my Thinkpad is truly top-tier.

It is such an upgrade. I can't believe how long I used this laptop without it. Getting away from TN is far more important than the resolution, so settle for 1400x1050 if you have to.

My buddy bought a 140 (new at retail, I might add) and absolutely loves it. He added an SSD and 8GB of RAM, although it's mostly used to take notes in class and play League in-between.

I dunno, I think the little "education" models are charming machines for what they are, but there's definitely better options out there. I guess it just depends on how you make use of it.

I actually have one of these. I have an Edge E545, the build quality a shit but it has balls. I upgraded it to the A10 2.5 quad, with 16gb RAM. The APU integrated graphics aren't too horrible, it's an HD8650G and it will play most games from the Counter-Strike Source era at max res with all the eye candy on.

Battery life isn't too bad, but really the whole reason to get a Thinkpad is build quality and mine couldn't handle a 3 foot drop and the whole bottom of it is destroyed.

>>
>>54907804
When you remove your current optical drive from your laptop, you can remove those from the original drive and put them on your caddy.
Otherwise, I don't think you will be able to buy them.
>>
>>54907831
Well, fuck. Figured I can remove them from the original drive but I need spares. What's the point of swap drive with only one caddy to swap?

Also I think they come with original Lenovo drive caddy, but those costs 4 times as much as the no-brand caddy, so screw that.

So it's either getting hold of defunct Thinkpad and salvaging them or somehow crafting my own...
>>
>>54908064

Yeah, 16:10 won but they still would have trouble putting this laptop together and selling enough units to make it profitable.
They make "business" laptops that follow the same formula. I doubt they would attract the enterprise crowd with large contract selling to make a good enough return on the retro. It's been a very long time since any updates were posted so it was likely a PR/marketing thing.

doubt they would go through the effort for that. Besides, there were way more people that showed an interest in the product so making it a limited edition isn't exactly the best option.
